As digital transformation ramps up, the competencies needed to drive industrywide change are more keenly sought after than ever.Often, the gap between experts in their domains, and the data scientists who implement transformative processes is wide, necessitating intermediaries to deal with the complexities involved. But what if the domain expert and the data specialist were the same person? In this podcast, we look at SLB's Domain Data Science (DDS) program, which was established to transform domain experts into data scientists, through a blend of theory and hands-on, real-world business experience. We speak with the architect of the DDS initiative, Nikhil Choudhary, learning and competency manager at SLB D&I, and one of the program's first graduates, domain data scientist – subsurface, David Manzano, about their goals and the finer points of the DDS experience.

In the first episode our new series, we take a look at how companies can limit their emissions in the well construction phase of oil and gas production. Currently, up to 10% of all greenhouse gases emitted by the sector derive from well construction activities, and there is a huge scope for reducing this carbon footprint with the right digital technology. To find out how, we speak with SLB's Lambo Thavaraj, on the benefits of Drilling Emissions Management for a more sustainable oil and gas industry.

Energy Transition: Reducing methane emissions in oil and gas

As the energy industry considers how we can make a meaningful contribution to the energy transition, it would be difficult to place too much emphasis on the important role reducing methane emissions from oil and gas operations will play. This is because methane is simply much more potent as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. Calculations on the effect of methane emissions on climate change over a 100-year period have shown that emissions of one ton of methane, will have the same effect as 28 tons of carbon dioxide. As methane does not remain in the atmosphere as long as carbon dioxide, acting now can make a huge difference in the short-term. Within oil and gas operations, methane emissions are highly actionable, and there are a range of ways to rapidly reduce the footprint of the industry. Listen to “Energy Transition: Reducing methane emissions in oil and gas" to hear Drew Pomerantz, GHG emissions principal, and Sam Tilley, energy transition – market and business analyst, both from Schlumberger, discuss how we can reduce methane emissions in our industry to help achieve industry targets for a net-zero world.
