Ellen and Hannah have acne, and they want to shout it to the world! With a sprinkle of humor and a dash of cynicism, they'll share conversations with dermatologists, influencers and possibly their moms about the genetic curse of adult acne.
Liam Hemsworth. Diving boards. Accutane (a.ka. Isotretinoin). what do all of these things have in common? Nothing, except for the fact that we somehow weave all three into a rich tapestry that is THIS EPISODE! After taking some time to rest (jk, we were overwhelmed by other things in life lol), we are BACK, baby, with a super-rich deep dive into Ellen's final stretch of Accutane, one of the most powerful acne drugs available through a dermatologist in the United States. We'll take you on a deep dive into the symptoms and solutions Ellen has discovered in her course of this prescription drug . Hi Zitties! We took a week off from publishing, but now we're back with an episode on
Accutane, AKA Isotretinoin, is a controversial drug in the skincare world. WHyyyy? Well, it's a super-powered retinoid for treating severe acne, and it has some pretty wicked side effects. Ellen's enduring this treatment in real time after getting her first prescription in January, and in this episode she shares her experience so far. CW: Discussion of surgery, injuries and a car accident.Scars: whether from a surgery or an accident, these physical reminders of trauma contain emotion, pain and history. In this episode, we chat with Liz Sexton, a dear friend and badass woman, about the scars she carries from a car accident in 2015. She shares how she's crafted a powerful, personal narrative about her experience, and has developed greater empathy for other people in the process. Often, scars are permanent reminders of painful times, but they can also be points of proof for the very real struggles we've overcome. And that's pretty incredible.(Alternative title: It was an Honor
About a year ago, we recorded our first episode for Pretty Zitty, detailing our struggles with "problem skin." We sat on the interview for awhile, afraid to put our most personal and embarrassing stories out into the ether. But! Lucky for you (lol, jk) we did, opening up a dialogue about the intersection of acne, self-care and pop culture. This week, we're re-releasing that episode to re-introduce ourselves to our newer listeners, and to take a look back on where we were a year ago
In the words of Diddy, "It preserves my sexy." Yep, we're talking about Proactiv, the famous infomercial skincare regimen. Truth be told, neither of us have actually used their products, but we nevertheless did a deep dive into their products, history and long legacy of celebrity endorsements. Here's what you can expect from this episode:Why Proactiv was kind of revolutionary in 1995A breakdown of the active ingredients (hello, bleached pillows, thanks to benzoyl peroxide)Juicy bits about all the celebrity endorsementsEllen’s love for Sean John Combs, a.k.a. P. DiddyA hearty Kendall Jenner discussionA brief note on deregulation thanks to Reagan
Ever get a nice nine hours of sleep and STILL have dark or puffy under eyes? We feel ya. Fortunately, dark under eyes are apparently cool now according to Tik Tok, where youths are using makeup to get that sleepy, overworked look. We break down this trend...and push it further, considering sad girl aesthetics of Tik Tok 2021 and Tumblr 2013. We'll also examine previous forms of fashionable dishevelment, and come to the sweet conclusion that all insecurities have the potential to come into fashion. Digressions include: Heroin chic, sleepy girl culture, Igari blush and Aegyo-sal. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/prettyzitty)

It's 2021! Wow. Dang! So we're not necessarily thriving as we crawl into the new year with our few remaining shreds of dignity, but we have not lost hope that we can spark some joy in the new year with some SKINCARE GOALS. Because honestly? As frivolous as it might seem, channeling our energy into taking better care of ourselves this year is the best we can do in these pandemic times. So in this episode we're giving you all of our skincare resolutions. Digressions include Hannah's coronation as the Google Doc Queen, a tiny No Doubt reference, plus one WEIRD trick from Ellen – doctors hate her!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/prettyzitty)
Here's the link to our Patreon, where we have bonus stuff for youuuuuu! "Oh you have [insert any health concern]? Have you tried drinking water?" Why, yes, we HAVE! In fact, we took it to the next level in this episode by assigning ourselves a two-week water challenge. Was the frequent urination worth it? Did guzzling all the H2O give us baby-smooth skin? Does asking three questions in a row like this make you more enticed to actually listen? Hard to say! Listen and find out, you cute little snail.

Lol!CW: Discussion of diets and restriction (specifically, old-fashioned diets that were prescribed for acne).Urine. Honey. X-Rays. What on God's green earth do these things have in common? Well, they've all historically been used as ACNE TREATMENTS. Today, we're stepping into our time-traveling-mobile and whisking off to ancient Egypt, sixteenth century France, the Roaring Twenties and more. Our mission? To traverse time to uncover the history of acne diagnoses and treatments. ---Works Referenced:Carusillo, C. (2016, November 15). The history of acne. Repeller. It's the end-all, be-all for acne treatments. The drug you try after your dermatologist prescribed pretty much everything else already. It's ACCUTANE, also known as Isotretinoin. On this episode of the PimpleCast, we chatted with our pimple pal Karina Hillman about the soul-sucking and also life-changing properties of Accutane. This is 100 percent NOT dermatologist approved – just our personal perspectives :)
This week, we are sharing a lovely conversation with Virgo queen Jordan Ormond Foster as part of our skin stories series - a series within our that features conversations with real people who have struggled with their skin in some way. We connected with Jordan via Instagram, baybee! But Ellen actually knows Jordan from way back in high school. We dig into those high school memories...apparently Ellen was COOL in high school?!? Plus, Jordan guides us through three trendy skincare ingredients, and why they are worth a closer look: hyaluronic acid, niacinamides and retinols/retinoids. These ingredients are in TONS of skincare products today, so it was helpful to hear Jordan’s masterclass on each of them. Just call her Martin Scorsese, one of the most important directors of all time, but like, the skincare version of that.
Lights, camera, ZITS! In this special celebrity episode, Ellen and Hannah chat about their favorite celebrities who have been open about skin troubles. Plus, some shot-by-shot analysis of the iconic 2005 remake of Pride and Prejudice, featuring a Judi Dench impression by Ellen. Celebrities...they're just like us!
This episode is all about MASKS! The skincare kind AND the global pandemic kind! Bonus bonus bonus episode! We are lucky to be quarantining from our respective homes, so that’s where you’re hearing our lovely voices. We all know these are scary, ~stress-y~ times. Skincare can feel pointless…or maybe it’s the only thing you’re clinging to at the moment. Whatever the case, it’s OK to have monster volcano acne right now and eat Oreos and go on walks and slack off and cry in the shower and buy two pies and die a little bit inside and rest a lot. So take a cleansing breath, grab your family-size box of Cheerios and listen to us prattle on about our skin woes and quarantine gripes. Aaaand here are the products we mentioned in this episode. In this episode, we share OUR skin stories! Come, journey back with us – Ellen and Hannah – to a time when Tik Tok was just an amazing song by Ke$ha, baby lips lip gloss was the pinnacle of class and our tamagotchis were alive and well. Yes, we are venturing into our youth to talk about our struggles with acne starting at age 10. While we grew up in different states and didn't meet until our twenties, our experiences were similar: unrelenting acne from a young age. You don't have to watch the Virgin Suicides to know that being a young girl is tough as hell, even without skin problems. Take a listen as we share our embarrassing moments trying to conceal our skin and navigate adolescence. We'll also dive into the creams, pills, supplements and diets we've tried to clean our skin over the years. We each have acne to this day, but we're both a lot more accepting of it than we were in the past – and hope we can share our acne origin stories while emphasizing that acne is NOT just a teenage condition. Acne is a serious struggle for so many people of all ages, and we believe its association with teenage years can create a stigma for many adults acne-havers today. So, if you're out there well into your 20s, 30s and beyond – we see you, and we hope our stories can offer a little bit of solace.
