Gut health and migraines may be more connected than you've ever been told — and if you've been waiting for your migraines to “just go away” after menopause, this episode might change everything. Migraines are now being viewed as a symptom of deeper dysfunction in the brain, gut, mitochondria, and vascular system — not just a hormonal inconvenience. If you're tired of powering through, relying on quick fixes, or wondering why nothing seems to work long-term, this episode gives you a smarter path forward. We might have been overlooking the missing link between gut health and migraines. My Guest: Dr. Amelia Scott Barrett is a Stanford-trained neurologist and founder of Migraine Relief Code, where she pioneers a precision medicine approach to chronic headaches and migraine. She created the first genetic testing panel designed specifically for people with migraine, helping patients identify their unique Genetic Headache Type and follow customized recovery protocols that combine medical care, nutrition, supplements, and lifestyle strategies. A TEDx speaker and author of the upcoming book ALIGN: Live the Way You're Wired to Relieve Headaches + Migraine for Good, her work has been featured in Business Insider and Women's World. After launching her private neurology practice in Denver in 2003, she founded Migraine Relief Code in 2019 to bring personalized, science-driven solutions to people worldwide. Dr. Barrett is passionate about addressing migraine as a women's health crisis, empowering women to relieve pain, protect their earning power, and reclaim their lives. Questions We Answer in This Episode: [00:12:17] What are some of the genetic problems that can cause issues with gut health and migraines? [00:20:02] What is your #1 recommendation that women can start now for improving gut health and reducing migraines? [00:22:06] What medications work for migraine? [00:29:40] Is there a connection between chronic migraine with dementia or Alzheimer's? [00:31:40] What can women in midlife do to help improve the gut and reduce migraine severity or frequency? What is the importance of fiber with migraine? [00:37:44] How is inflammation related to migraine?
Dr. Hoffman continues his conversation with Neil Levin, the Senior Nutrition Education Manager and a product formulator for NOW(r) Foods and Protocol for Life Balance.
Nutritional Support for Brain Health: Lifestyle, Curcumin, Magnesium, and Key Nootropics: Nutrition educator/formulator Neil Levin from Protocol for Life Balance details nutritional support for brain health amid skepticism about “brain-boosting” supplements, citing a preprint randomized controlled trial using a multifaceted lifestyle plan (diet, exercise, sleep) plus targeted supplementation that reportedly improved and even reversed symptoms in people with mild cognitive impairment. They contrast lifestyle strategies with costly, side-effect-prone injectable “plaque-buster” Alzheimer's drugs and notes debate about whether amyloid is a root cause or byproduct. The conversation highlights inflammation and oxidation as major aging-related brain threats and reviews supplements including a brain-targeted curcumin (discussing bioavailability, delivery methods, blood–brain barrier crossing, and claims of lowering beta-amyloid protein), magnesium L-threonate for CNS delivery, phosphatidylserine and acetylcholine support (including huperzine), ginkgo and gotu kola, glutamine/GABA pathways, creatine, omega-3s (DHA/EPA and algae sources), B vitamins, acetyl-L-carnitine, alpha-lipoic acid, and cocoa flavanols, plus concerns about supplement industry enforcement.
Could an enzyme deficiency explain why you have food intolerances causing bloating, loose bowels, reflux, brain fog, joint pain, skin issues, and more? Namely, sucrase isomaltase. This enzyme, known as the sucrase-isomaltase enzyme, may be deficient in many people dealing with chronic GI issues. One study found that 8% of people were at an increased genetic risk for this deficiency (https://jpedres.org/articles/frequency-of-congenital-sucrase-isomaltase-deficiency-by-whole-exome-sequencing-is-it-really-rare/doi/jpr.galenos.2024.65625?utm_). Another study found that 25% with chronic GI symptoms had issues breaking down sucrose (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36304608/). Thankfully, a diet exists for this which has been studied and shown to be very effective. In fact, it's been shown to be as or even more effective than some of the best diets we currently have for improving gut health – therefore maybe the best diet for gut health? Let's break down what this enzyme deficiency is, what the diet is, SSRD, and how this diet applies and can be helpful even for those with underlying fungal or bacterial overgrowth and leaky gut.

Send a textRole of bile acids in cholesterol regulation, digestion & metabolic diseases like diabetes.TOPICS DISCUSSED:Bile acids basics: They enable cholesterol excretion, with about half of bodily cholesterol eliminated this way, and also aid digestion by emulsifying fats to increase enzyme access.Bile production & pathway: Synthesized in liver hepatocytes, bile flows via ducts to the gallbladder for storage or directly to the small intestine; post-meal, cholecystokinin triggers gallbladder contraction for fat emulsification.Regulation of bile acids: Self-regulated to prevent cytotoxicity, as excess can damage cell membranes; insulin and bile acids themselves influence synthesis and transport, with defects in insulin-resistant states.Bile acids in metabolic diseases: Increased synthesis, especially 12-hydroxylated types, occurs in type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance, potentially as an adaptation for better nutrient absorption during perceived scarcity.Gallbladder removal & gallstones: Common due to cholesterol supersaturation forming stones; removal eliminates concentration but preserves bile flow, reducing tolerance for high-fat meals.Bariatric surgery impacts: Procedures like gastric bypass increase circulating bile acids without major synthesis changes, while more extreme ones boost synthesis due to impaired intestinal sensing.Cholesterol homeostasis: Cells tightly regulate membrane cholesterol for fluidity and signaling; most bodily cholesterol is synthesized internally, with LDL receptors key to blood levels.Ongoing research: Haeusler's lab explores manganese's role in metabolism, bile acids in liver inflammation, and insulin's effects on lipoproteins.ABOUT THE GUEST: Rebecca Haeusler, PhD is an associate professor at Columbia University in the departments of medicine and pathology and cell biology, affiliated with the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center and the Digestive and Liver Diseases Research Center.RELATED EPISODE:M&M 269 | Soybean Oil: Obesity, Fatty Liver Disease, Gut Health, IBS & Colitis | Frances SladekSupport the showHealth Products by M&M Partners: SporesMD: Premium mushrooms products (gourmet mushrooms, nootropics, research). How do you know when mold detox symptoms are a normal part of the process versus a sign you need to slow down? What should you do if mold detox triggers fatigue, low HRV, and gut issues? This is part 3 of my mold detox story, where I share what happened when I started detoxing from mold, and how I had to adjust when things didn't go as I planned them.In this episode, I talk about the difference between manageable detox discomfort and your body telling you to slow down—because detox shouldn't take over your whole life or make it hard to function. Within the first couple of weeks of this detox, I started noticing clear signs my body was struggling — deep fatigue, low HRV with a higher resting heart rate, looser stools, and intense emotional symptoms like agitation, sadness, and sudden anger.Instead of pushing through what could be labeled a “Herxheimer response,” I listened to my body and adjusted my plan to better support it through the protocol.I also share how differently my husband responded to the same detox plan at the same time, which reinforced how individualized detox needs to be. As things progressed, I noticed new clues that shifted my entire focus: loss of appetite, burping, and reflux — signs that made me think toxins were recirculating through my gut, and that low stomach acid and possible H. pylori were in the picture.Your body is always giving cues, and when you get multiple data points pointing to the same thing, it's worth listening to them! I decided to pause detox and prioritize gut support, and then got strong confirmation through both my acupuncturist and my chiropractor that my gut and liver were both struggling through the detox. This is your reminder to always listen to your body, especially when dealing with something as serious and difficult to detox as mold. If you're on the same path as me, or think you might be struggling with mold illness or something similar, don't miss this episode, and be sure to check out the SHE Thrives hybrid program to get personalized support alongside a community of other women having similar experiences as you.Disclaimer: This information is being provided to you for educational and informational purposes only. Dr. Hoffman continues his conversation with Theresa Lyons, PhD, a Yale-trained scientist and medical strategist who became an autism expert after her daughter's diagnosis and now runs AWEtism.net.
Autism, Functional Medicine, and Personalized Interventions: A Conversation with Theresa Lyons, PhD, a Yale-trained scientist and medical strategist who became an autism expert after her daughter's diagnosis and now runs AWEtism.net. Lyons describes dissatisfaction with conventional guidance that offers limited drugs for irritability and primarily ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis), which is insurance-covered, often recommended at 40 hours/week, uses extrinsic rewards, and may help some skill-learning but has controversies and limitations for social development; she contrasts newer approaches such as RDI (Relationship Development Intervention) and PRT (Pivotal Response), which aim to build intrinsic motivation but are typically not covered by insurance. The discussion covers autism heterogeneity, changes in diagnostic categories (e.g., Asperger's folded into autism), and research including a Boston Children's Hospital study reporting 37% of children in a cohort lost their autism diagnosis over time (diagnosis based on observation). Lyons addresses debates about rising autism prevalence, noting multiple potential contributors and rejecting single-cause explanations, while citing risk-factor examples such as family autoimmune history and air pollution exposure. She outlines a functional medicine “why” approach using constipation as an example (root causes vs. symptomatic treatment), and emphasizes basic, low-risk steps such as evaluating diet, inflammation, hydration/electrolytes, and blood work for nutrients. Specific topics include gluten-free approaches (mechanisms involving gut permeability, immune burden, and CNS effects), dairy/inflammation, vitamin D deficiency and monitoring, melatonin as a well-studied short-term aid in autism (considered safe for a couple of years in studies) while still seeking underlying causes, and omega-3 fatty acids for focus and inflammation. Lyons explains leucovorin (folinic acid, prescription vitamin B9) as a targeted approach for children with folate receptor antibodies (reported in ~70% of autistic children), discusses the value and cost (~$300) of specialized testing from one U.S. lab, and notes reports of major speech and behavior improvements in responders, with dosing nuances. The episode also reviews evidence and cautions around the microbiome, including fecal microbiota transplant (FDA-approved for C. difficile; discussed as having an ~80% response rate in autism-related studies when gut issues are a key driver, but with major donor/compatibility considerations) and probiotics (some small trials and high costs). Other themes include “clean eating,” organic foods and toxin-load considerations tied to genetic detoxification vulnerabilities, discussion of acetaminophen/Tylenol in pregnancy in the context of glutathione pathways and personalized risk, and using genetics to guide interventions. Lyons warns that analysis of top autism TikTok videos found ~70% were inaccurate or overdramatized, recommending social media only for ideas, not decision-making. She also highlights parent stress, citing emerging research on increased PTSD risk among autism parents, and emphasizes support and community. Lyons advises parents to understand their child's specific health drivers and match them to appropriately specialized clinicians, noting her curated doctor listings in The Lyons Report.

As parents, it's natural to look for answers when your child continues to struggle with regulation, sleep, energy, or emotional balance. Many families begin asking deeper questions: Is something happening inside my child's body? How do gut health and inflammation affect behavior and regulation? Are there additional supports beyond what we're already doing? In a recent episode of the Autism Family Resource Podcast, we explored these questions with Dr. Jeffrey Knight, focusing on how the body, gut, and nervous system are deeply interconnected. Regulation Is More Than Behavior Regulation challenges are often viewed through a behavioral lens alone. While strategies and therapies are incredibly important, they are just one part of the picture. A child's nervous system is influenced by many internal factors, including inflammation, digestion, sleep quality, and overall physical stress on the body. When the body is under stress, the nervous system may stay in a heightened state, making regulation more difficult despite a child's best efforts. The Gut–Brain Connection Research continues to highlight the strong relationship between the gut and the brain. Gut health can influence mood, attention, sleep, and overall regulation. Inflammation in the body may also impact how efficiently the nervous system functions. This doesn't mean there is one single cause or solution. Rather, it encourages families to look at regulation through a whole-body lens. Supplements, Detox Support, and Whole-Body Awareness During the conversation, we discussed how supplements and detox support may play a role for some children when carefully considered and guided by a qualified professional. The goal is not to chase trends or quick fixes, but to understand: What questions to ask When additional supports might be appropriate How to approach integrative care safely Every child is different, and what works for one family may not be right for another. Working With the Right Professionals Matters Exploring whole-body supports should always be done thoughtfully and collaboratively. Families benefit most when working with professionals who: Understand neurodiversity Respect the child as a whole person Consider medical history, sensory needs, and nervous system regulation Communicate clearly and transparently How Pure Hearts Therapy Supports Families At Pure Hearts Therapy, we believe in supporting children and families beyond a single approach. Our neurodiversity-affirming services focus on connection, regulation, and meaningful participation in everyday life. We also believe parents deserve clear, grounded information so they can make confident decisions for their families. Take the Next Step If this conversation sparked new questions or gave you language for things you've been noticing, you're not alone.

Xylitol, FTC Censorship, and the Oral–Heart Health Connection: Nathan Jones, CEO and founder of Xlear, Inc., makers of xylitol-based nasal and dental hygiene products, and a health freedom advocate, discusses Jones' ongoing legal battle with the FTC. He addresses the difficulty of making health claims for hygiene products (including toothpaste and nasal sprays), the role of “weasel words” in supplement marketing, and concerns about regulatory double standards versus pharmaceuticals. He also reviews xylitol's benefits for dental caries and respiratory/ear infections, including references to studies and public-health examples (e.g., Finland and a Belize program reducing dental caries costs), and Jones' efforts to encourage Utah to implement xylitol gum programs in schools. He contrasts fluoride's enamel-strengthening approach with xylitol's effect on the underlying bacterial cause of tooth decay, discusses Utah's fluoride policy change and claims about fluoride's limited benefit, and highlights a correlation between poor oral health and cardiovascular risk via inflammation and bacterial translocation into the bloodstream, including pathogens found in atherosclerotic plaque, and links also discussed for dementia and Parkinson's. They close with commentary on health advocacy in the “MAHA era,” the challenges of entrenched federal bureaucracy, and Jones' preference for advocacy groups that teach industry to push back rather than comply.
Dr. Hoffman continues his conversation with Nathan Jones, CEO and founder of Xlear, Inc.
Have you ever noticed how quickly your mood can shift… and then blamed yourself for it? Like you should just think more positively or try harder to control your mindset? In this week's episode of The Thin Thinking Podcast, I'm joined by Jenn Trepeck for a conversation that many of you will find incredibly freeing:
Overthinking workouts often keeps people frozen while days pass with no real movement. Clarity comes from choosing a simple exercise rhythm that fits real life instead of chasing perfect plans. Shifting from research mode into repeatable action helps fitness feel lighter, more consistent, and easier to maintain during busy seasons. A few firm limits on time, structure, and choices can turn scattered effort into steady progress that your body can feel. If you eat the same breakfast on repeat because it “fits your macros”, this episode is for you. This week on The Nutrition Couch, Leanne and Susie unpack the biggest breakfast mistake they see in clinic, why it can quietly stall gut health and fat loss, and the simple way to fix it without overhauling your whole routine. Then, they cut through the noise on ultra-processed foods, sharing realistic supermarket swaps that reduce additives while keeping your grocery bill (and your sanity) intact. Plus, a surprisingly decent chocolatey lunchbox snack gets reviewed, and they answer the question everyone asks after we’ve “bagged out” wraps, which ones are actually worth buying? In this episode, we cover: The number one breakfast mistake for gut health and metabolism (and why “same breakfast every day” backfires) The 30 plant foods per week idea, what counts, and how to rack up plant points without trying Easy ways to rotate breakfasts while still hitting protein goals Why your weight loss can plateau even when you’re doing everything “right”, and how variety helps Ultra-processed foods: the difference between “some processing” and foods that genuinely drive poor outcomes Practical UPF swaps that actually make a difference (cereal, milks, breads, yoghurts, chips, crackers) The truth about additives like emulsifiers, when they matter, and when social media fear has gone too far Cracker chat: why some “party crackers” are basically biscuits, and what to buy instead for everyday Product review: Nestlé Milo 40% Less Sugar Dairy Snack, is it a solid option for active kids? The “maths isn’t mathing” moment, how the lower sugar version stacks up against the regular one (and why we’re investigating) Listener question: wraps, which ones are okay, and why “spinach wraps” are usually marketing, not veggies Best buys: the simple, budget-friendly wholegrain mini wraps Leanne and Susie actually recommend As always, this is practical, evidence-led nutrition advice without the all-or-nothing nonsense. Did you know that picky eating can sometimes be caused by the messages the bacteria in your gut are sending to your brain? So the CHILD isn't being a sugar monster…or making stubborn choices just to drive you crazy…their gut bugs are the sugar monsters and their brain has pruned too much!I learned so much from Elissa Arnheim in this interview, both the philosophical to feed MY brain and the practical—some of which I implemented that very day! Here are my favorite quotes:“Let's start with this: Our bodies are designed perfectly.”“If a child cuts out an entire category of healthy foods, it's a sign that something is wrong – and it's all figure-out-able and fixable.”“Step 1 for sugar monster kids: serve sauerkraut!”
In this deep‑dive conversation, Dr. Krista Kostroman and Dr. Richard Horowitz explore what may be one of the most comprehensive frameworks for understanding chronic disease today: Dr. Horowitz's 16‑point MSIDS model (Multiple Systemic Infectious Disease Syndrome).Dr. Richard Horowitz is an internationally recognized physician practicing in Hyde Park, NY. He is an award-winning author of two bestselling books on Lyme disease and chronic illness, and co-author of the 2018 HHS Tick-borne Disease Working Group report to Congress. He has received humanitarian awards from the Turn the Corner Foundation and Project Lyme, has appeared on numerous local and national media outlets—including the Today show and Fox News, for his work on Lyme disease and COVID-19—and is now providing novel solutions for our climate emergency.Across 40+ years and 13,000+ chronically ill patients, Dr. Horowitz has repeatedly seen that chronic illness is never caused by just one thing. Instead, it's the collision of infections, toxins, gut disruption, hormonal imbalance, immune dysregulation, and more. Together, they break down:Why the “one cause, one cure” medical model no longer fits modern chronic diseaseHow inflammation is the central biological event behind most conditionsWhy the same 16 factors appear across Lyme disease, long‑COVID, Alzheimer's, autoimmune disease, mood disorders, metabolic disorders, and beyondThe role of genes and epigenetics in both illness and healingWhy younger and younger people now present with high inflammation markersHow we can meaningfully reverse disease trajectories — including cognitive declineWhat a future “Chronic Disease Center of Excellence” could look likeAnd why patient advocacy is reshaping the medical system more than ever beforeIf you wish to learn more from Dr. Richard Horowitz, check out the following links:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drrichardhorowitz/Book Website: https://cangetbetter.com/ending-chronic-illness/Contact him at medical@hvhac.com______________________________________________________Keep yourself up to date on The DNA Talks Podcast! In this conversation, Dr. Tim Spector breaks down why modern life has quietly dismantled our relationship with fermented foods and how that loss may be fueling inflammation, metabolic disease, and poor mental health. Drawing from the landmark Stanford fermented foods study, he explains how just a few daily servings of fermented foods lowered inflammatory markers by 25%, outperforming fiber alone in immune impact. He outlines the hierarchy of prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics, why ultra-processed foods sabotage gut health, and how eating 30 diverse plants per week can measurably improve mood, energy, and microbiome diversity. From reversing type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease to redefining stool health as a vital sign, Spector argues that restoring gut diversity may be one of the most powerful levers for extending healthspan — potentially adding ten more healthy years of life. ----- 00:00 – The Fermented Foods Study That Changed Everything 03:22 – Health Trends in 2026: Fiber vs. The Protein Craze 06:04 – The 30 Plants Per Week Rule 09:40 – Gut Health and Mental Health Connection 16:27 – What Modern Life Destroyed About Fermentation 21:55 – The Stanford Fermented Foods Study 24:31 – 3 Fermented Foods to Start Today 27:29 – Live vs. Dead Microbes (Postbiotics Explained) 38:56 – Probiotics vs. Prebiotics vs. Postbiotics 48:41 – The Biggest Destroyer of Gut Health 52:48 – The New Gut Health Metric (Nature Study) 01:01:56 – What Your Stool Says About Your Health 01:09:29 – Can Gut Health Reverse Chronic Disease? 01:13:02 – The Simplest Gut Health Rule 01:13:36 – Adding 10 Healthy Years to Your Life ----- Episode resources: Try Troscriptions clinical-grade wellness troches and use checkout code EVERFORWARD for exclusive savings Save 39% on MitoPure longevity gummies with code EVERFORWARD at https://www.Timeline.com/everforward Get 50% off any diagnostic labs with code CHASE at https://www.JoiAndBlokes.com/chase Watch and subscribe on YouTube

Overthinking workouts can keep your body still while your mind spins through options. Clear limits on planning, fewer daily choices, and simple triggers tied to your real schedule can turn vague fitness goals into real movement. Shifting your self talk and setting boundaries around "research" time helps you act on the plan you already have instead of chasing a better one.
