Lisa Eldridge was partner at a law firm, and then she wasn't (spoiler: she found her way back to the partnership). For decades, she balanced work and life - stepping back from her partnership and raising three kids before once again making partner after racking up 30 years as a corporate litigator. She's a brilliant lawyer, passionate community activist, and long-time champion for more flexible work arrangements in the private legal sector, particularly for women. In this fun, honest conversation we cover a lot of ground: balancing work and life, being paid what you're worth, advocating for yourself, finding your niche, uplifting other women, and a whole lot more.

Lisa Eldridge is a make up artist with her own brand, who has also appeared on TV in ‘10 Years Younger - the Challenge' and in a documentary series which I adored, called ‘Makeup: A Glamorous History' about the manufacture, use and politics of makeup. She grew up in New Zealand and then Liverpool and was at the top of her career, flying around the world and doing fashion shows and Vogue covers when she became pregnant and had her son. We talked about how Lisa managed to enjoy being a mum to the full, and then reignite her career once her son was a teenager She also told me how her son and stepson are of similar ages and very much like brothers.I share Lisa's passion for makeup so it was fascinating for me to hear about how her love affair began with her mum's old Mary Quant collection, how she started collecting her own vintage cosmetics with a box of Biba makeup she bought for a fiver, and has gone on to acquire some incredibly personal items including Audrey Hepburn's lipstick holder. And of course, no conversation with Lisa would be complete without hearing about the co-star of her you tube videos, Ted the talking cat, who acts as her fashion adviser and stylist!Spinning Plates is presented by Sophie Ellis Bextor, produced by Claire Jones, and post-production is by Richard Jones. EPISODE 162./ Heeeey guys! A HAPPY week to us all because it's our last week of Melbourne lockdown - WOOOO. Lots of home-related chats to get through, and lap it up, because it might be the end of reno chat for a while whilst we frolic in our freedom. First up in beauty news this week, Jaclyn Hill is officially a distributer of beauty products?! 'Iminit'. Is it a weird flex for Jaclyn Hill to go into logistics? Yes. Was the website made on piczo? Definitely. Next, RMS was purchased this week by Hylander Partners. Lisa Eldridge has launched a new 40 shade foundation range, and Francis Kurkdijan has become the new fragrance director behind Christian Dior Parfums and speaking of fragrances, Le Labo has brought out The Matcha Fragrance. Next up, we have a LQOQ: "I woke up this morning and had a pilates class in the park. I got home and had a shower. Do i then need to oil cleanse, then normal cleanse before reapplying all of my skincare and SPF?" Whilst we don't have THE only answer, we have a couple of ways that we'd tackle that question. We had a catch up with our friends at Acast this week, and we're keen to get our listener (that's you)'s input on the updates we're planning to make to our show! Please tune in to provide us with your feedback - we do this for you and would hate for you all to hate our podcast if things change too dramatically! Getting into beauty news… This week we're coining Jeffree Star as the boy who cried wolf after an ill-timed accident that he was involved in over the week with a long time friend. Reality or fake news? You be the judge. Speaking of people being dodgy, this week it was announced that James Charles has been dropped by Morphe and Demonetised by YouTube. New things this week include weddings, babies and product launches from Ultra Violette, Hourglass, Esmi, and Lisa Eldridge. This week we trialled the Dior Backstage Face and Body foundation. Time for us to discuss the claims, our thoughts and how we find that this foundation compares to the cult MAC Face and Body foundation alternative. Dame Stephanie Shirley – always known as Steve – tells us about her work revolutionising the workplace and as a major philanthropist. On Tuesday, Leicester University are launching their 'Student Sex Worker Policy and Toolkit'. We hear from Professor Teela Sanders, a Professor of Criminology at Leicester University who explains why she is leading this initiative and the feminist commentator and journalist Sarah Ditum gives us her view. Are men beginning to turn to cosmetics to improve their appearance in the same way as women? Danny Gray, who created the WarPaint make-up range for men believes this to be the case and the make-up artist, Lisa Eldridge, author of Face Paint: the History of Make-Up gives her thoughts. What’s the best way to approach shyness in your child? We hear from Nadia Finer who runs an online programme for shy 7-14 year olds who want to feel braver, and more able to speak up and join in. Is it time to end the idea that being in a couple is the superior way to live? We hear from Professor Sasha Roseneil the author of a new book, The Tenacity of the Couple-Norm. And we discuss the therapeutic benefits of clay with Kate Malone, one of the UK’s leading potters and ceramicists – and Charlotte Clarkson, who’s been getting the chance to try out the medium at her local youth centre. Presenter: Jane Garvey Producer: Rabeka Nurmahomed Editor: Sarah Crawley
Extinction Rebellion has used civil disobedience to put the climate crisis firmly at the top of the news agenda. It’s also attracted women and whole families to take to the streets to protest for the first time in their lives. Gail Bradbrook, the co-founder of XR and one of the women on this year’s Woman’s Hour Power List, joins Jane to talk about the support for – and criticisms of – the use of protest to bring about systemic change in the name of the planet. Are men beginning to turn to cosmetics to improve their appearance in the same way women use them? According to Danny Gray, who created the WarPaint make-up range, says they are. He’s seen a huge increase in interest from men, which he partly puts down to the amount of time they’ve spent looking at themselves on Zoom. He discusses this trend, and the make-up artist, Lisa Eldridge, author of 'Face Paint; the History of Make-Up', explains the background behind men and their use of cosmetics. It’s time to end the idea that being in a couple is the superior way to live, according to a new book, 'The Tenacity of the Couple-Norm'. The couple-norm is the ubiquitous idea that being in a couple is the normal, natural and better way of living. It’s such a powerful norm that being in a couple is almost synonymous with being a successful adult. The authors – academics from 4 different countries - argue that, amidst enormous transformations in our ideas about family life and relationships in past decades, this norm has remained largely unchallenged and unchanged, making life difficult for anyone who departs from it. The lead author, Professor Sasha Roseneil, joins Jane. Gail Newsham features in the latest series of The Game Changers podcast which showcases trailblazing women in sport. Gail Newsham has spent the last three decades researching and sharing the story of the Dick, Kerr Ladies. One hundred years ago over 50,000 turned out to watch them play a match. She explains why the team was so important in the history of women’s football.
Makeup artist and YouTube creator Lisa Eldridge helps you see yourself in a kinder light, explains the different face types and how to identify your best features, and shares a genius trick for concealing capillaries and other imperfections. She also explains what really happens behind the scenes of beauty-advertisement photo shoots (!) and talks about her favorite products and the artists, jewelers, and people who inspire her. Before the interview, Jess & Jenn offer help for underarm discoloration and chat about the beauty news: companies phasing out racist skin “lightening” products; Pattern Beauty's new launch; KKW Beauty's legal drama; and an FDA warning about a dangerous ingredient discovered in some hand sanitizers.Want more Fat Mascara? Our secret Facebook group: Fat Mascara / Raising a WandInstagram: @fatmascara, @jessicamatlin, @jennedit Twitter: @fatmascara Email: info@fatmascara.com Website: fatmascara.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

I have been inspired by all your comments after my recent make up tutorials on IGTV. It is such as minefield as none of us NEED to wear make up but many of us do and for lots of good reasons. The industry is laden with messages that tell us what we need to look like or what products to use so it takes real confidence to find our own groove with it. The key for me is in understanding our relationship with make up and also in discovering whether it is aiding us in being ourselves, or whether it is encouraging us to hide and hold back. Firstly, there is no right or wrong, one of my best friends NEVER wears make up, its just who she is and that’s brilliant. Make up is there for enhancement if we so choose to wear it ….which got me thinking, why do we choose to wear it? So using the opening lines of the famous monologue from Shakespeare’s As You Like It “All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players…” I’m taking a theatrical turn on this one. My take on why we wear make up is that it offers to us one of the following: A MASK – for those who are anxious and insecure tend to use make up to boost their confidence, or perhaps it might be to hide a spot or blemish. A SPOTLIGHT – for those who want to be noticed, feel confident, more assertive – celebrity make up artist Lisa Eldridge, calls it the element of war paint and tribalism, that make up can make you feel more powerful and ready to face any situation. A STAGE – for those who want to express themselves, who love to be playful and creative, to try different looks and trends, it’s all about enjoying the creative process and sharing it with the world. Beauty is such a tricky word, we talk about the beauty industry and make up being products designed to enhance our physical beauty but how do we define that and why do we feel the need to look younger? We need to start valuing our life experience and each year we have successfully navigated our way through. I think the nuts and bolts of it is there is no one given reason as to why we wear make up. The reality is we are fine as we are and those who love us will tell us so – whether or not we wear make up boils down to a bunch of different reasons on a daily basis. It might be that you’re tired and need something to help you feel like you can face the world, it might be that you want to look polished and put together just like your outfit is because you wouldn’t dream of looking otherwise, it might be that you’ve got a hideous spot that needs hiding and you aren’t going anywhere without make up on or it might be that you just love it regardless. For me, I have played with make up since my very early teens, I used it at first to find my own space, to discover who I was and then in my 20s I used it to hide who I was and then in my 30s I used it to boost who I was and I would say now in my 40s, I use it because I can but I’ve come full circle and have forced myself to be confront my own pride and ego so that baring my naked face isn’t an issue, but instead is just another side of me and if I can’t accept that, then why should anyone else. It really does go back to knowing how to love ourselves doesn’t it? So much does! Listen in to hear my break down on the different products from primer to eyebrow pencil and tune in to my IGTV for tutorials on how to use different products. Please also get in touch if there is something you would like for me to cover, I will be more than delighted to do so! Enjoy xx

Make-up artist Mary Greenwell is a beauty industry legend who's made up some quite extraordinary people, including Cate Blanchett, Diana, Princess of Wales, Jessica Chastain, Cindy Crawford, Meghan Markle, Amanda Seyfried, Christy Turlington, and Margaret Thatcher. But the thing that really distinguishes Mary's work from that of other make-up artists is not who she's made up, but rather how very memorable the end effect is. Think of those '80s supermodels sporting smoky eyes and honeyed skin, and you're invariably thinking of Greenwell's work. She famously transformed Princess Diana in the '90s, when she and Sam McKnight modernised Diana's look. And who could forget Meghan Markle's cover turn on Vanity Fair, freckles out, eyes rimmed with softly-smudged kohl?Mary's influence doesn't stop with the people she's made up, though - she was assisted by and was therefore integral in developing the skills of make-up artists like Lisa Eldridge and Charlotte Tilbury, and has advised countless brands on how their products should look and feel.On this episode, I was very keen for Mary to tell us some of her stories from both from her stellar career and perhaps one or two that might offer some insight into how a young girl from West Sussex who, by her own admission, was a 'little hippy' came to be one of the most revered women in the beauty industry. Mary kindly indulged my curiosity, and I hope you'll find the tale of her journey to being a working make-up artist as riveting as I did, as well as, of course, enjoying her recollections of working with some of the most celebrated people in the world, and paying heed to her tips on make-up (those of you who aren't fans of brushes will no doubt delight in her views on them). Here are the products Mary mentions:- Lanvin Arpege Eau de Parfum- Iles Formula Luxury Haircare- Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat- Yves Saint Laurent Number 19 Lipstick- Calvin Klein Original Fragrance- Sisley Eau de Soir Eau de Parfum- MAC Face & Body- Elizabeth Arden Smoky Eyes Powder Pencil- Nicola Clarke at Nicola Clarke at John Frieda- Joel Goncalves at Nicola Clarke at John FriedaBeauty Full Lives is hosted by Madeleine Spencer, produced by Charlie Jones, and with artwork by Sung Lee. “I remember thinking, ‘What am I doing?’ I had a great husband, I had a great house, I had all this safety — this big safety net — and I’ve just taken myself out of it. Am I doing the right thing? What is this going to lead to? It was really difficult. And there were moments on the road when I was just distraught and confused but I think once you take that giant leap of faith, the only way is forward. And it’s only natural to want to go back to something that’s really safe. To go back to your old life but if you just keep going forward, then you learn to trust, in whatever it is you learn to trust in. For me, it’s the universe. I trusted that everything will be okay. And since then doors have opened. I don’t regret that at all. I’m definitely living the right life for me now.” Lisa Eldridge is an author and journalist, whose works been published by Insight Guides, Sunday Times Travel, and Real Travel magazine. With a background in the travel industry, she set out at twenty one to live and work in numerous countries, totalling 85 — about half of which she visited on her own. But it was in Eastern Asia that she found the inspiration to create something from her curiosity, and her site site Girl About the Globe was born — an ethical travel resource for women who want to travel, and might need to do so on their own. She recently successfully Kickstarted her own book, A Female Guide to Solo Travel. Solo-female travel is a topic we get into a lot on this show — and we’ll be exploring a little this month (April 2015). I wanted to chat with Lisa at a deeper level about the complexities and differences of being a woman on the road, and why it is harder for women to find the same transformative experience on the road as I did, and continue to do, in my travels.
