In which The Curmudgeons continue their exploration of all the cool and revolutionary sounds blasting out of the City of Angels in the 1990s. By 1995, the music world had been grungified, making things safer, brighter and lovelier for not only hard-rock artists, but folks of the more soul-breaking, confessional variety. And that L.A. satisfied both ends of that spectrum between 1995 and 1999. Rage Against the Machine, Tool, System of a Down and Kyuss all blasted down doors and melted minds. Meanwhile, Beck, eels and Los Lobos soothed the more sensitive souls. We take a run through work by those artists and more on this episode. We begin this episode, though, by discussing the legacies of two recently departed icons, Ozzy Osbourne and Hulk Hogan.    Enjoy the music that came out of Los Angeles during the latter half of the 1990s by accessing our special Spotify playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7KHCvbSIZv6lqVOLW88yTw?si=1f93bf2fb25a48a4   Here's a handy navigation companion to this episode.   (00:52 - 03:40) - Arturo Andrade sets the parameters for our discussion of rock in Los Angles during the latter half of the 1990s   (03:43 - 27:31) - The Curmudgeons, both children of the 1980s, discuss the legacies of Ozzy Osbourne and Hulk Hogan   (28:30 - 45:04) - The Parallel Universe, featuring reviews of recent releases by Wet Leg and Orua.    (46:24 - 01:36:04) - We cover albums by No Doubt, Kyuss, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine, Los Lobos, Beck, Weezer and Sublime   (01:36:04 - 02:19:31) - We cover albums by Tool, System of a Down, Queens of the Stone Age, eels, Beck (again), The Red Hot Chili Peppers (again) and Rage Against the Machine (again) Join our Curmudgeonly Community today! facebook.com/groups/curmudgeonrock   Hosted on Podbean! curmudgeonrock.podbean.com   Subscribe to our show on these platforms: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-curmudgeon-rock-report/id1551808911   https://open.spotify.com/show/4q7bHKIROH98o0vJbXLamB?si=5ffbdc04d6d44ecb   https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/5fea16f1-664e-40b7-932e-5fb748cffb1d/the-   Co-produced and co-hosted by The Curmudgeons - Arturo Andrade and Christopher O'Connor

Episode 81: Kevin Lyman. The Vans Warped Tour is the longest-running touring music festival in North America, drawing over 750,000 fans every summer at its peak. And it all started with one guy — Kevin Lyman. In this episode, we sit down in person with the man who turned parking lots into punk rock playgrounds, helped break some of the biggest names in music, and built a generation-defining cultural movement. Warped Tour was the first concert I ever went to at 13 years old, and a few years later, I was lucky enough to play the tour multiple times, including full runs, and again in 2010 with Skrillex. It was a big contributor in shaping my life. In this conversation, I finally got to ask Kevin everything I've wanted to know for years. We dive deep into: - How Kevin started Warped Tour from scratch - How he landed the sponsorship deal with Vans - The behind-the-scenes details that kept it running for 24 years - How he gave stages to artists like Sublime, No Doubt, Blink-182, Eminem, My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Avenged Sevenfold, Paramore, Deftones, Katy Perry, The Used, Good Charlotte, New Found Glory, Sugar Ray, and MXPX - How legends like NOFX, Bad Religion, Rancid, Pennywise, and Less Than Jake helped anchor the tour - Why set times changed daily, were never announced in advance, and who set them - Working with Sublime, what Brad Nowell was like, and how Brad's death led Kevin to focus on helping people with recovery - Kevin's personal mission, values, and work ethic behind it all This 90-minute deep dive is the ultimate Warped Tour tell-all. We recorded it right after the first Warped Tour returned in Washington D.C. in July 2025 — with Long Beach and Florida still to come. Kevin Lyman is a punk rock pioneer, a cultural architect, and one of the most influential figures in live music. I'm honored to share this one with you. Here's my conversation with the amazing Kevin Lyman. Let's go!! ‘Go with Elmo Lovano' is a weekly podcast where Elmo interviews creatives and entrepreneurs in music on HOW they push forward every day, got where they are in their careers, manage their personal lives, and share lessons learned and their most important insights. Are you ready to GO all-in? This week on Shoot the Hostage our drugs season takes a detour intro the fast-paced, vibrant world of Doug Liman's 1999 cult hit, Go – our third foray into the wild world of cinematic substances. This film boasts arguably the most aggressively late 90s cast ever, functioning as a true ensemble piece even if some weren't A-listers at the time. We get into the raw talent of Sarah Polley as Ronna, a young adult making some truly stupid decisions over one wild night. We also delve into the magnetic Taye Diggs who improves the second act by at least 35% and the sheer chaos of Breckin Meyer.   We talk about Go's incredible soundtrack with artists like Fatboy Slim, Steppenwolf, Massive Attack, and No Doubt. Despite Doug Liman's initial unfamiliarity with rave culture, the film's fast-paced energy and quick cutting brilliantly capture the hedonism of the time, without ever feeling preachy. The movie is infused with drugs, particularly ecstasy (or "X," which becomes a fun running visual motif throughout, and we unpack how the film blends crime thriller elements with ridiculous comedy. Here's some other things we explore in the episode: Doug Liman's directing style and other films from his career. The use of Melissa McCarthy and Confederated Products in other John August scripts The 90s ensemble cast, including Timothy Olyphant and Katie Holmes The film's unique title, its possible meaning and the difficulty of searching for it online The style influenced by Tarantino, Kevin Smith, and Kevin Williamson. The script's try-hard moments versus its enduring humour. Season 11 runs until August 11th with 8 episodes Would you like to see the full lineup for season 11? Carrie writes “It's taken me almost 3 years to write this email. I've tried a few times over the years but convinced myself that you probably won't contact me so I just deleted the other emails. But I have an encounter that happened to me when I was 20 and the details of what I seen will stick with me for the rest of my life! Long story (extremely short:) Me and my x boyfriend was at the boat ramp on Quintette River in Escambia Florida at dusk. The sun was still up enough we could see good but it was starting to set. This was around the beginning of summer as I remember sitting at the ramp on shorts. We was killing time until we went back to his house. We was there an hour maybe a little more before we heard a HUGE splash from across the river, which is a decent size river. Before the splash, there was dead silence.. Across from the ramp it's nothing but woods and forest for miles. I thought a bear or alligator jumped into the river and was swimming to us so we ran to my truck that was parked at the edge of the ramp. I turned on my headlights so we could see clearly and the creature was already halfway across the river! It was RUNNING NOT SWIMMING with it's hands over it's head almost like an over hand swimming motion but he never went deeper than his chest. The way he was able to cross a river that deep and swift as fast as he did was mind-blowing and I almost couldn't comprehend it at the time. I was frozen in fear when it got to the end of the ramp, I expected it to keep coming up the ramp but instead it pulled it's self up on the DOCK and it stared at us, eyes wide teeth showing. I can describe everything from every wrinkle in his face, his devilish eyes, nails, arms, chest EVERYTHING! The ramp is over 4 foot wide and his chest was as big of not a little bigger then the width of the ramp! It started climbing up the end of the ramp, after I got a good look at everything, I backed up and turned the truck around as fast as I could and got out of there. Years later there are STILL finger nail marks on that ramp where it pulled itself up! Since then I have met my current Boyfriend (he has his own encounter where he was chased by one a couple years before we met) and we love to go out riding at dusk to dawn throughout the night in the forest looking to see what we can come across. We love all animals and how beautiful the night sky is. We stay alert and because of that we have a few different times and I have a couple daytime pictures of different things that happened but none as clear as the time I was less than 15 foot from one. I have more details regarding his face, color and everything from when it came across the river at me but it would take a long time to explain in an email. I truly hope you reach out to me! I would love to tell my encounter and describe in detail every thing I seen as he stared me down in the few minutes before I could drive away. No doubt he was coming to kill us, he was very evil, his eyes dark and teeth showing!”

Two things have entertained me this week. We've had the falling out of two of the world's most powerful and wealthy narcissists - all of which played out on their own social media platforms. This breakup must be the most predicted thing to come out of Trump's presidency so far. After the drama of Thursday's outbursts, there seems to be a de-escalation between President Trump and his former benefactor and DOGE leader Elon Musk. Maybe they each realised they're unlikely to win outright, with the other having a platform to keep the jabs coming. Or maybe a little more strategic thought is going into next moves, although I'm not sure how much lower the blows could have gone. But if you're looking for alternative entertainment this weekend, I can recommend Netflix's The Survivors. The Aussie series is based on a Jane Harper novel set in Tasmania, and tells the story of how a present-day death in a coastal town brings back difficult memories of a 15-year-old tragedy when 3 young people died at sea. It's a crime drama filled with small town secrets, buried trauma and grief. At the heart of this film, giving another acting masterclass, is our very own Kiwi legend Robyn Malcolm. Every time I see Malcolm in a new role I say it's her best performance yet - she's at the very top of her game. It occurred to me this weekend that she's always been at the top of her game - whether on Shortland St, Outrageous Fortune, Jane Campion's Top of the Lake or Aussie comedies like Rake or Upper Middle Bogan. But there's no doubt Malcolm just keeps getting better. While many other actors discuss the difficulty of getting work once a woman hits a certain age, Malcolm reminds us the middle years can be the glory years. That a life of experience and hard work can lead to the roles of a lifetime. Recent performances in After the Party, Pike River, and The Survivors are giving writers a reason to write wonderfully layered, messed up characters for women like Malcolm to play. If you look at Robyn's resume you'd think she's been employed consistently since walking out of drama school in 1987. But I know it hasn't always been easy. Being an actor is not an easy life no matter how damn good you are. But watching Malcolm, along with Dianne Taylor, pick up a pen and create a project for herself - the Bafta-nominated After the Party - proves you can be middle aged, relevant, celebrated and seen, if you want to be. It's hard to take your eyes off her in The Survivor. But just wait until you see her in Rob Sarkies' new film Pike River, which is being released in New Zealand in October. Yip, you guessed it. Picture it, Boston, 1995. A young man from Meriden, CT decides to uproot his life and move to a new city. New faces, new friends, and plenty of new music. It has been 30 years since I made the fateful decision to make the move to Boston. It was also a time to expand my musical palette. Thankfully, there was plenty of new music to choose from, with tons of second hand music shops like CD Spins, interspersed with the big retailers like Tower Records.Much of the music on the radio at the time was not for me (except TLC!), but thanfully there were rock friendly radio stations in the city, as well as some of the best clubs to see live music. TT the Bears and The Middle East come to mind. Acts that would go on to become huge stars got their big breaks in 1995, while smaller indie, punk, and metal bands were just reaching their loftiest heights. Bands like Shelter and Jawbreaker achieved their biggest commercial successes, while bands like Rancid and Presidents of the United States of America were getting some air time on radio stations like WBCN and WAAF.Plus, legends like Faith No More, Radiohead and Fugazi added to their legacies in 1995. Oh, and some band called Oasis had a huge record or something. And everyone was asking the question, "What is a Foo Fighter"?
