Eighty percent of lung cancer cases are diagnosed too late, not because the signals aren't there, but because nobody was looking at the right moment. Prashant Warier, co-founder and CEO of Qure.ai, joins Craig Smith to explain how his company is changing that using a tool most people already encounter: the routine chest X-ray. Cure's Lung Nodule Malignancy Risk Score - validated in the CREATE study - analyzes X-rays people get for unrelated reasons, identifies high-risk nodules, and flags which patients need follow-up CT scans. The result is a detection rate of 54 positive patients out of 100 flagged as high-risk, compared to the 2 out of 100 found by standard CT screening programs. That's not a marginal improvement. That's a different category of outcome. The conversation covers the full landscape of where AI diagnostics actually stands today: the 15 million TB screening X-rays that Cure reads autonomously every year across 70 countries with no radiologist in the loop, because in many of those countries there are only two radiologists for the entire nation; the 26 FDA clearances and 200-plus published studies that underpin the company's clinical credibility; and the regulatory barriers that currently prevent patients from uploading their own scans and getting an AI read directly. Warier also makes his sharpest prediction: within 5 to 10 years, primary care will be AI-first, the first conversation you have when something feels wrong won't be with a doctor, it will be with an AI. Based on what Cure is already doing at scale today, that timeline is harder to dismiss than it might sound. Subscribe to Eye on A.I. for weekly conversations with the people building and deploying the future of AI.
Like many huge discoveries, X-rays were accidentally stumbled upon. That serendipity led to a medical breakthrough still in use today. Learn about how X-rays are created and why they make such delightful images of our bones.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Breaking Down The Truth Behind the 1999 vs. 2022 Radiation Guidelines In this episode of the Tooth or Dare Podcast, Irene and Victoria tackle one of the most misunderstood topics in dentistry today: radiation protection guidelines and the confusion surrounding lead aprons. You've probably heard the statement: "Lead aprons are no longer required." But what does that actually mean? With the transition from the 1999 radiation protection guidelines to the updated 2022 recommendations, many dental professionals, especially in Ontario, Canada, have been left trying to determine what has changed, what hasn't, and how these recommendations should be applied in clinical practice. Because this conversation isn't about removing protection. It's about understanding protection. In This Episode We Discuss: The key differences between the 1999 and 2022 radiation protection guidelines Why the phrase "not required" is often misunderstood The anatomy of a lead apron: apron vs. thyroid collar When patient shielding may still be appropriate What defines an elective radiograph Why radiographs should only be prescribed when there is a clear indication or risk factor How digital imaging and handheld X-ray devices have changed the landscape The importance of critical thinking when applying updated guidelines Clinical & Real-World Insights How advances in digital radiography have influenced modern safety recommendations Increased specificity in the 2022 guidelines regarding equipment handling, storage, inspection, and damage protocols Real-world examples of responding to equipment alerts and quality concerns The growing emphasis on quality assurance and documentation Why "not required" does not mean "never use" How misinterpretation of guidelines can directly impact patient care Key Takeaway At the end of the day, using protection appropriately based on evidence, clinical judgment, and patient-specific factors. Guidelines evolve, but our clinical judgement and patient needs need to be considered. The standard of care remains. A simple framework to remember: Assess Risk → Justify Exposure → Optimize Protection Because radiographs are not routine and ought to be prescribed with purpose and reason Resources & References Canadian Resources CDA Position Statement for the Control of X-Radiation in Dentistry https://www.cda-adc.ca/en/about/position_statements/xray/ RCDSO X-Ray Safety Requirements for All Ontario Dentists https://www.rcdso.org/en-ca/standards-guidelines-resources/rcdso-news/articles/1393 Health Canada – Radiation Protection in Dentistry (Safety Code 30, 2022) https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/environmental-workplace-health/reports-publications/radiation/radiation-protection-dentistry-recommended-safety-procedures-use-dental-equipment-safety-code-30.html Healing Arts Radiation Protection Act (HARP) – Ontario https://www.ontario.ca/laws/statute/90h02 HARP Certification Course (George Brown College) https://coned.georgebrown.ca/courses-and-programs/dental-radiography-harp-approved-certification Federation of Dental Hygiene Regulators of Canada – Scope of Practice https://www.fdhrc.ca/pages/dental-hygiene-in-canada/the-profession/ CDHO Update on Scope of Practice for Dental Hygienists in Ontario https://cdho.org/update-on-scope-of-practice/ International Resources ADA Releases Updated Recommendations to Enhance Radiography Safety in Dentistry https://www.ada.org/about/press-releases/ada-releases-updated-recommendations-to-enhance-radiography-safety-in-dentistry ADA & AAOMR Patient Selection for Dental Radiography and Cone-Beam Computed Tomography https://jada.ada.org/action/showPdf?pii=S0002-8177%2825%2900631-2 AAPD Guidelines for Prescribing Dental Radiographs for Infants, Children, Adolescents, and Individuals with Special Health Care Needs https://www.aapd.org/media/policies_guidelines/bp_radiographs.pdf Standards for Licensing Dental Hygienists and Dental Assistants in Dental Radiography (US) https://codes.findlaw.com/cfr/title-42-public-health/cfr-pt-42-75-app-g/ Additional Resources Toothlife X-Radiation Downloadable Resource https://www.toothlife.ca/products/x-ray-radiation-resource Designs for Vision Loupes https://www.designsforvision.com/DentHtml/HygDes.htm

Don't miss out on your RACE-approved CE—completely free. Strengthen your veterinary dentistry skills with practical, case-based training you can apply immediately in practice. Visit: https://ivdi.org/free --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Host: Dr. Brett Beckman, DVM, FAVD, DAVDC, DAAPM Guest: Annie Mills, LVT --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This week's episode answers real veterinary dentistry questions from recent online trainings, with a focus on the clinical decisions that often create uncertainty in general practice. Annie Mills, LVT, discusses how to determine when a tooth should be extracted, how to interpret deep periodontal pockets, and why dental radiographs are essential before making treatment decisions. The conversation also covers antibiotic use in veterinary dentistry, including why antibiotics should not be dispensed automatically for every dental procedure. Annie explains when intraoperative antibiotics may be appropriate, when post-operative antibiotics are justified, and why patient immune status matters. You'll also hear an important discussion about young small-breed dogs and hidden periodontal disease. Even when the mouth looks normal on gross exam, significant disease can exist below the gumline. This episode reinforces why early probing, dental X-rays, and individualized follow-up protocols can prevent more severe disease and future extractions. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What You'll Learn in This Episode

When was the last time your dentist mentioned that artificial intelligence was scanning your X-rays before you even sat down in the chair? General dentist Sowjanya Gunukula explains how AI is quietly transforming routine dental checkups in ways most patients never hear about. Based on her KevinMD article, "How AI in dentistry is changing your next checkup," this conversation breaks down the two major applications reshaping dental care today: radiographic analysis that color-codes cavities and bone loss in real time, and predictive analytics that sort patients into risk categories for more personalized treatment plans. Gunukula describes how AI acts as a second set of eyes that never gets tired, catching early problems on busy days that the human eye might miss. You'll learn why dentistry is shifting from reactive to preventive, how AI-driven risk profiling can mean less time in the chair and lower costs, and why patients should feel empowered to ask their dentist how these tools are being used. She also addresses concerns about over-reliance and explains why responsible adoption keeps the patient relationship at the center. If you want to understand what is already happening behind the scenes at your next dental visit, this episode is worth your time. Tune into our episode "2026 Cholesterol Guidelines: LDL goals, lipoprotein(a), and coronary calcium scoring," brought to you by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation. For the first time in eight years, LDL cholesterol goals have changed, and preventive cardiologist Seth Baum says the new guidelines are a long-overdue course correction. He breaks down the new LDL targets for your highest-risk patients, why the LDL hypothesis should be retired in favor of the LDL fact, why lipoprotein(a) screening finally belongs in every patient's workup, what a coronary calcium score over 300 really means for how aggressively you treat, and how to talk to statin-skeptical patients without losing their trust. What happens when a patient makes a reasonable, informed decision to skip a non-mandatory test and the system simply stops? Patient advocate Aaron S. Rosenberg shares how a routine dental visit became a case study in conditional care after he declined bite-wing X-rays and was told his cleaning could not proceed. His episode is based on his KevinMD article, "Informed refusal vs. denied care: a dental case study," You will hear how a recommendation quietly became a requirement, how licensure risk was invoked despite no such mandate existing in ADA guidelines, and how the visit ended with no care delivered at all. Rosenberg draws on his career spanning clinical practice, health systems, and insurance to examine how standardization, liability concerns, and billing structures can squeeze out shared decision making. He makes the case that informed refusal is a patient right that only has meaning if care remains available after a reasonable decline. He also explores where to draw the line, distinguishing non-mandatory diagnostics tied to preventive care from urgent clinical scenarios where compliance may be essential. If you have ever wondered whether health care systems are quietly replacing clinical judgment with rigid protocols, this episode will sharpen how you think about patient autonomy. I got interviewed by Northeastern Student, Ani and her classmates for a school project and thought it was a great window into why patient communication, behavioral science, and mastering the art of building trust is so important in todays healthcare world. We review how mastering all of the above will help with: - keeping patients healthy at a time where insurance seems to run everything - educating others in a world where information (and misinformation) is at our fingertips - find fulfillment as a new provider with a lot of loans to pay and dealing with the stress of gaining experience @justaquickpinch, @drconniewang

A clinical conversation about the updated recommendations to enhance radiography safety in dentistry. Special Guest: Dr. Erika Benavides For more information, show notes and transcripts visit https://www.ada.org/podcast Show Notes In this episode, we are having a clinical conversation about the updated recommendations to enhance radiography safety in dentistry. We explore the major changes from previous guidelines, the rationale behind discontinuing patient shielding, the importance of patient‑centered imaging, and practical implications for dentists and academics. Our guest is Dr. Erika Benavides, a Clinical Professor and Associate Chair of the Division of Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology and Radiology, and the Director of the CBCT Service at the University of Michigan, School of Dentistry. She is a Diplomate and Past President of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (ABOMR). She also served as Councilor for Communications of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and Chair of the Research and Technology Committee. Dr. Benavides is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and has published multiple peer-reviewed manuscripts in the multidisciplinary aspects of diagnostic imaging. She has been a co-investigator in NIH funded grants for the past 10 years and recently served as the Chair of the expert panel to update the 2012 ADA/FDA recommendations for dental radiography. Her clinical practice is dedicated to interpretation of 2D and 3D dentomaxillofacial imaging. The two-part recommendations were updated by an expert panel which included radiologists, general and pediatric dentists, a public health specialist, and consultants from nearly every dental specialty. Dr. Benavides shares some of the main takeaways and new updates is that that lead aprons and radiation collars are no longer recommended. This recommendation includes all dental maxillofacial imaging procedures and applies to most patients. Also, a recommendation to avoid routine or convenience imaging, and focus instead of patient-centered imaging, based on the patients' specific needs. And, when possible, previous radiographs should be obtained. Dr. Benavides shares that imaging must be patient‑specific, not protocol-driven, and encourages dentists to ask the following questions before dental imaging: "Do we need this additional information? Is this additional information going to change my diagnosis, or it's going to contribute to the diagnosis and treatment planning?" The group discusses some of the possible challenges, and opportunities, to implement these new recommendations. Resources: This episode is brought to you by Dr. Jen Oral Care. Peptides are everywhere in the health & performance world—but what are they actually? In this episode, Andrew breaks down what peptides are, why they've exploded in popularity, and what research has and hasn't been done. We'll e go deeper on two of the most talked-about peptides: BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound) and GHK-Cu (copper tripeptide). We cover what they're commonly used for (tendon/ligament recovery, wound healing, gut support, skin and hair), the proposed mechanisms (inflammation regulation, nitric oxide support, angiogenesis, collagen/elastin signaling), and circumstances where Andrew would recommend avoiding them (active cancer or a strong cancer concern due to blood vessel growth signaling). If you've been hearing peptide hype online and want a grounded overview—this is your starting point.Chapters00:00 Why Peptides Are Trending01:23 What Peptides Are04:10 Recovery and Anti-Aging08:05 Where to Get Peptides13:30 BPC-157 For Gut, Tendons, Ligaments, and Wounds23:10 BPC-157 For Inflammation, Nitric oxide, Angiogenesis, Growth-Hormone Receptors38:40 Andrew's experience50:30 GHK-Cu For Healing, Antioxidants, Brain, Skin, and HairThe Co-Movement Gym Podcast is supported by Native Path Supplements and Lombardi Chiropractic.

Taking dental X-rays can be one of the most challenging parts of a dental assistant's day, especially when patients are anxious, uncomfortable, or difficult to image. Small technique mistakes, rushed positioning, or missed opportunities to build trust can turn a routine task into a frustrating experience for both the assistant and the patient. In this episode of the Dental Assistant Nation podcast, Kevin Henry sits down with dental radiography educator Janet Simpson to explore how dental assistants can take better dental X-rays every time. Janet shares practical insights from decades of clinical and teaching experience, explaining how proper positioning, understanding X-ray beam behavior, and adjusting technique can dramatically improve image quality. The conversation also highlights the importance of patient comfort, empathy, and communication, showing how trust and compassion play a critical role in successful radiographs. From correcting common imaging errors to creating a calmer experience for nervous patients, this episode offers a thoughtful look at how mastering dental X-rays goes beyond equipment and technique and starts with the assistant behind the sensor. From X-Rays to Motion Pictures: Expanding the Photographic Medium — Anika Burgess — Burgess traces the expansion of photographic technology beyond conventional image capture. She examines Alice Austin's intimate and playful photographs documenting her social circle with candid authenticity. The discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Röntgen was rapidly branded as "the new photography" or "shadow photography," adopted swiftly for both entertainment and medical diagnostic applications despite practitioners possessing no understanding of severe radiation hazards. Burgess concludes with Paul Martin's candid street photography using concealed cameras hidden within top hats and Eadweard Muybridge's sequential motion studies, which directly enabled the invention of motion pictures. 1903 FRANCE

Physicist Dr. David Mantik returns to Strange Planet with explosive New EVIDENCE - optical density measurements of the original JFK autopsy X-rays, proving beyond doubt that the president's head wounds were surgically altered on film before the body ever reached Bethesda. And, Cold War historian Walter Herbst reveals how the assassination wasn't chaos, but consensus policy born from covert operations and geopolitical necessity. This is the original Deep State “deep-fake”—forged evidence that still controls the narrative today. GUESTS: Dr. David Mantik, MD, PhD – A radiation oncologist and physicist who personally examined the JFK autopsy X-rays and photographs at the National Archives on nine separate occasions. Author of President John F. Kennedy: The Final Analysis, The JFK Assassination Decoded: Criminal Forgery in the Autopsy Photographs and X-Rays, and the groundbreaking new book JFK Was Killed by Consensus. His peer-reviewed optical density data proves the autopsy images were altered—making him the foremost forensic challenger to the official record. Walter Herbst – Cold War historian and author of the landmark two-volume series It Did Not Start With JFK, which traces the intelligence networks, propaganda machines, and Berlin/Cuba crises that made Kennedy's removal official—if unspoken—policy. His latest work, Last Resort Beyond Last Resort, exposes why the assassination guaranteed no second invasion of Cuba and protected NATO's flank in Berlin. Herbst doesn't peddle conspiracy theories; he documents the paper trail of the original Deep State in action. I was very tempted to go fishing today, and leave this show to the machines. If you have any doubt that AI could do my job and conduct a 30 minute interview with local business people, today’s show is going to remove that doubt. In fact, it won’t take the whole show, you’ll probably be convinced in 5 minutes. Step one: meet Rich Simmerman. We first met Rich a few years ago when he launched a breakfast cereal company. Then, in 2024, Rich started up another company. This one is called Cantaloupe. It’s the same name as the fruit, but this company’s product is people. Specifically, people in the hospitality and construction industries. Cantaloupe is an AI tool for interviewing people looking for a job in a bar, a restaurant, or on a construction site. Cantaloupe’s proprietary interviewer - an AI bot called Clio - interviews prospective applicants then analyzes their responses according to the parameters an employer lays out, and decides whether the applicant would be a good fit. Cantaloupe’s research says it’s more accurate than a human reading a resume and reduces turnover caused by early quitting by 40%. Cantaloupe’s technology has won awards and Clio is working for all kinds of companies, including multi-location restaurant groups. I recently had a doctor’s appointment, and for the first time in memory, my doctor paid 100% attention to me. While I was talking, he wasn’t typing anything into my records, like he usually does. When I mentioned it, he said he was part of an evaluation group who were trying out an AI-based system that would record our conversation and write it up for him as consultation notes. The pressure is on healthcare systems to incorporate AI into its daily functions, to provide better patient care, and do a wide range of back-end tasks, from accounting to reading X-Rays. The problem is, if you manage a big hospital, or a small medical clinic, whatever skills have gotten you to your current position, they probably do not include a sophisticated knowledge of AI. So, who do you call about that? The answer is a company called Benzait. They’re dedicated to implementing AI into medical practices, hospitals, and other parts of the healthcare industry. Benzait’s Founder and CEO is New Orleanian Ralph Whalen. If you went to sleep in 2020 and woke up today and needed a job on a building site and a doctor appointment - to discuss your sleep disorder - you’d barely believe the changes that have taken place in the last few years. Your job interview is with a non-human. And the notes from your doctor appointment, along with recommendations for further consultations and a detailed treatment plan, are all available through your patient portal online before you even get home. Ralph Whalen and Rich Simmerman are ushering us into a whole new world. Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Columns in Uptown New Orleans. Mercylyn Odibo, author of X-Rays of Little Hopes, opens up about her powerful journey from heartbreak to healing and creative purpose. Once unsure if her book would ever be published, she now celebrates a story that connects faith, love, and human resilience. Her novel centers on Prue, a woman who experiences betrayal, disillusionment, and profound loss before rediscovering herself and her faith. Through Prue's eyes, readers witness the pain of misplaced trust, the desperation to be loved, and the beauty of rebuilding after devastation. The story reflects Mercylyn's desire to help others who have felt broken find meaning, courage, and hope again. In the episode, Mercylyn explains how X-Rays of Little Hopes was born from her longtime habit of journaling and her passion for storytelling. She began with the title itself, which symbolized how even the tiniest spark of hope can light the darkest moments. The novel took years to shape, combining her own reflections with the experiences of others who inspired her. She wanted to write something more than a simple romance, creating a story that tackles real emotions and social issues—betrayal, loss of trust, false expectations in relationships, and the danger of ignoring red flags for the sake of love. The result is a faith-based novel that feels genuine and relatable, not preachy. While rooted in Christian values, it is also designed for readers who want a good story about imperfect people finding redemption. Quotes: “The best, most beautiful thing anybody can do for themselves is be who they are. Love yourself and do the best you can.” “There's always a yes for every no, and not giving up is key.” “Don't let anyone define who you are... Pray every day, because good things come out of something bad.” Resources: X-rays of Little Hopes are available on Amazon Follow Mercylyn Odibo on Facebook Discover more of Mercylyn's inspiring stories

Ever wondered if X-rays are really necessary before a chiropractic adjustment? Or have you been told they're an optional, skippable step? In this vital episode of The Prime Podcast, Dr. Skip and Dr. Julie Wies tackle the growing misconception around spinal imaging and explain why skipping this step could put your health at risk. Many people seek chiropractic care for back pain, neck pain, or general wellness, but not all understand the importance of a proper diagnosis. An adjustment without a clear picture of your spinal health is just guesswork. Drs. Skip and Julie reveal what a trained chiropractor can see on an X-ray—from hidden fractures and dangerous pathologies to congenital abnormalities that could make a standard adjustment harmful. Discover why the X-ray and the chiropractic profession were born in the very same year and how this foundational tool is a non-negotiable "standard of care" for ensuring patient safety, achieving better results, and truly understanding the root cause of your health concerns. Don't let a practitioner gamble with your spine. Learn how to advocate for the highest standard of care. In this episode, you will learn: Why spinal X-rays are a foundational standard of care in chiropractic, not an upsell. The difference between "guessing" and "knowing" when it comes to your chiropractic adjustment. Real-life examples of serious conditions (cancer, aneurysms, hidden fractures) that were discovered through routine spinal imaging. A compelling case study of how an X-ray solved the mystery of a teenager's chronic migraines. The truth about radiation exposure from X-rays versus everyday activities like flying. What to do if your chiropractor has never taken an X-ray and how to find a practitioner who prioritizes your safety. Gettin ever so close to 200 episodes. Will we MAKE IT? We will.Folks, we can barely CONTAIN ourselves with excitement at the last second BLOCKED FG that gave the Birds an improbable victory against the Rams at the Linc. Why so improbable? Well, because Patullo and the rest of the dang team was ASLEEP in the first half! We muse about the second half adjustments (was the adjustment to pull rank on Patullo?), and the tale of two halves that gave us yet another Merrill Reese classic call. It's sad, maybe, but I absolutely well up with tears whenever he gets all excited like an elfin king.NEXT we have to check in on our playoff bound / NL East champs Phillies...and to delve into potential playoff matchups. We are still gunning for that number 2 spot at this point...of course a loss in extra innings to the Marlins last night didn't help us! Dammit Marlins you always gotta ruin stuff! Let's get it together (negative xRays on JT's hand, thank god)...and let's finish strong to get to October ball!Email: hoagiemouthpod@gmail.comIG: @hoagiemouthpod

Defense Attorney Alan Jackson started the day by coming in hot and accused the Prosecution of "burden shifting," implying they were improperly trying to make the defense prove their case. He provided a transcript that the Prosecution opened the door to ask Dr. Laposata about dog bites when Brennan inquired Dr. Russell about Dr. Laposata's report about dos bites. The Judge Denied questioning about dog bites but okay to question about animal bites. The judge offered to give an instruction about burden shifting to the jury but Jackson declined it.There was confusion about whether Dr. Wrenchler had seen X-ray evidence, as he testified there were none done to the arm, while Dr. La Pasada's testimony indicated X-rays did exist. This point raises questions about what evidence was provided to Dr. Wrenchler and how rebuttal will go.During Cross Examination and the Morning Break, Brennan wanted to impeach Dr. Laposata's credibility with past issues from her time as a medical examiner, including an audit and handling of the Station nightclub fire. The court allowed some of this to be brought up during cross-examination but not all.A juror's question led to the court clarifying what it meant when video evidence was "stricken" during testimony showing that all jurors are paying attention and really want to get the understanding right. The Defense's last witness, Dr. Andrew Rentschler, a Biomechanical Engineer at ARCCA, testified about how ARCCA was hired by a government agency and was not given information about the case. They were only give the circumstances and to try to recreate it. His analysis of John O'Keefe's injuries were that the injuries were not consistent with being struck by the Lexus, specifically the tail light. He determined that the force required to produce the skull fracture was significantly higher than what could result from impact with the taillight at a speed of 15 mph. There were several disputes regarding the content of Dr. Rentschler's PowerPoint presentation, with objections to text containing hearsay and ultimate opinions. The court ordered the presentation to be edited, with certain text removed. This will be finalized on Day 31 before the jury comes in.RESOURCESWhat You Need to Know About the Retrial - https://youtu.be/89Jpa8vz1RQ Karen Read Retrial Playlist - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLsbUyvZas7gKOJlfL__9F027hlETVU-vo Karen Read Trial - 2024 - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLsbUyvZas7gKUeCUzApgsEuQRXu5IXeTSThis podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Spotify Ad Analytics - https://www.spotify.com/us/legal/ad-analytics-privacy-policy/Podscribe - https://podscribe.com/privacy
