Can acne start in the gut?In this episode of The Turd Nerds, we're joined once again by Dr. Megan Larravey for a fascinating case-based discussion exploring the connection between chronic acne, gut health, H. pylori, dysbiosis, and inflammation. We walk through the case of a woman in her 30s who developed persistent cystic acne despite eating a clean diet, using clean skincare products, exercising regularly, sleeping well, and trying many conventional and natural treatment approaches. With no obvious hormonal pattern and no significant digestive symptoms, her case challenged many of our assumptions about what drives chronic acne. What we found highlights the powerful relationship between the gut microbiome and skin health—and why some skin conditions may be rooted in underlying gastrointestinal dysfunction, even when the gut appears perfectly healthy.✔ Why acne isn't always a hormone problem✔ The surprising connection between H. pylori and chronic skin conditions✔ How dysbiosis can contribute to persistent acne✔ The role of biofilms in chronic inflammatory conditions✔ Why some patients with gut dysfunction have no GI symptoms✔ Pseudomonas, endotoxins, and systemic inflammation✔ Leaky gut and its impact on skin health✔ How we approach stubborn acne from a functional medicine perspective✔ Stool testing, organic acid testing, and evaluating the gut-skin axis✔ The role of probiotics, spore-based probiotics, and immunoglobulins✔ Biofilm disruptors and antimicrobial herbs✔ Why healing the gut often takes longer than people expect✔ The importance of fiber, fermented foods, and rebuilding microbiome resilienceAcne is often viewed as a skin condition, but for some patients it may be a manifestation of deeper immune, inflammatory, and microbiome imbalances. This episode explores why chronic acne can persist despite doing "all the right things" and how addressing gut dysfunction may be an important piece of the puzzle.Whether you're struggling with acne yourself or you're a clinician looking to better understand the gut-skin connection, this conversation offers a practical and thought-provoking look at how the microbiome influences skin health.Music provided by Blue Dot.

Why Acne Isn't Just a Skin Problem: The Gut-Skin ConnectionWhat if your acne, eczema, rosacea, or chronic skin condition isn't actually starting in your skin?In this episode of The Turd Nerds, we're joined by naturopathic physician and acupuncturist Megan Larivee for a deep dive into the fascinating world of the gut-skin axis.We explore why the skin is much more than a protective barrier—it's actually the body's largest immune organ. From the skin microbiome and immune signaling to leaky gut, leaky skin, acne, eczema, rosacea, and psoriasis, we unpack the growing evidence connecting gastrointestinal health to chronic skin conditions. We discuss how gut dysbiosis, inflammation, barrier dysfunction, hormones, diet, and environmental exposures may all contribute to skin symptoms—and why simply treating the skin often isn't enough.✔ Why the skin is considered an immune organ✔ The relationship between the skin microbiome and the gut microbiome✔ Leaky gut and leaky skin: what they are and why they matter✔ Acne, eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, and other chronic skin conditions✔ How H. pylori and gut dysbiosis can influence skin health✔ Why skin conditions often persist despite topical treatments✔ The role of fiber and the microbiome in acne management✔ Dairy, insulin signaling, and androgen-driven acne✔ Candida, fungal overgrowth, and skin symptoms✔ The impact of personal care products, soaps, and environmental chemicals on skin health✔ Why skin barrier function is critical for long-term healing✔ Clinical pearls for evaluating chronic skin conditions through a gut-health lensThe skin and gut are constantly communicating through immune, inflammatory, hormonal, and microbial pathways. When that communication breaks down, chronic skin conditions may develop—or become difficult to resolve. If you've struggled with acne, eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, or unexplained skin symptoms, this episode offers a new perspective on where to look and what questions to ask.Because sometimes the best way to heal the skin is to start with the gut.Music provided by Blue Dot.

Acne doesn't care how old you are. It shows up at 15, then again at 37, on the same side of the jawline, around the same time of the month, no matter what you change in your skincare routine. If you've been treating the surface while something else is running the show underneath, this episode is going to reframe the whole conversation. This is the third and final episode in our Skin Series, and we're closing it out with acne. Not just the teenage kind. The adult hormonal kind that shows up like clockwork, concentrates along the jaw, and connects to a single enzyme most people have never heard of. Dr. Desiree breaks down the four types of acne, what makes hormonal acne structurally different, why your blood work can look completely normal and still not tell the full story, and how the research on Ganoderma lucidum triterpenoids connects directly to the enzyme driving sebum production. We also cover the gut connection, which maps more precisely to acne than most people expect, the psychological weight this condition carries at a level the research documents clearly, and where chaga fits in as a secondary supporting player. What You'll Learn:Why acne is actually several distinct conditions, and why getting the category right changes everything about how you address itWhat malassezia folliculitis (fungal acne) is, why nearly 1 in 3 people diagnosed with acne may actually have it, and the one symptom that gives it awayWhy hormonal acne concentrates specifically along the jawline, and what androgen receptor density has to do with itThe four-factor cascade behind every breakout and how one upstream hormone driver sets all of them in motionWhy completely normal blood work does not rule out hormonal acne, and what actually matters more than your lab numbersWhat the research actually documents about acne's psychological impact, and why clinical severity doesn't predict how much it affects someoneThe specific compounds in reishi's fruiting body that inhibit 5-alpha reductase, the exact enzyme converting testosterone to DHT in androgen-sensitive skin tissueHow a low glycemic diet connects to sebum production through a well-mapped biological line from food to insulin to IGF-1 to your sebaceous glandsThe gut microbiome research connecting a specific lactobacillus strain to IGF-1 expression and oxidative stress in acneWhy dual extraction matters specifically for the reishi compounds most relevant to hormonal acne, and what to look for on the labelYour Next Steps:Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/eversiowellness/Shop Eversio Wellness and save 15% with code PODCAST15: https://www.eversiowellness.com/discount/PODCAST15?redirect=%2Fcollections%2Fall-productsTake our wellness quiz to find the right mushroom for you: https://www.eversiowellness.com/pages/take-our-quiz

What if almost nothing you're putting on your face is actually getting in?This week, I sat down with Madalaina Conti, the New York esthetician behind Synergistic Skincare and the first practitioner to bring Qi Beauty to NYC. She's the one I fly across the country to see. But the skin you see now? That took over a decade. Madalaina spent her teens and twenties in deeply cystic, nodular acne that sat right on her jawbone and gave her toothaches. She almost didn't go to esthetics school at all, because she figured nobody would trust a girl who couldn't fix her own face. Here's what blew my mind. She told me you're only absorbing around 4% of what you apply topically unless you're doing something to drive it deeper. Four percent. Now go look at your shelf. Then she dropped a bomb on half the trends on your feed. Collagen masks — your skin can't decode and use it. LED masks — the wavelengths matter enormously, and some of those lights are the same tech used to hatch eggs. At-home microneedling — you can trigger an immune response that has to be surgically removed. And then we went somewhere I didn't expect at all: sound healing, cranial work, dating in New York, and why getting older might be the most exciting thing happening to us.After this one, you'll never look at your skincare shelf the same way. What we talk about:- Why her cystic acne caused toothaches — and what was actually behind it- Androgen sensitivity vs. "hormonal acne," and why your labs come back normal- Why sound healing and cranial decompression belong in a facial- The zinc "butt cream" trend and what she'd do instead- LED masks, red light, and the wavelengths that actually build collagen- PDRN, salmon DNA, and whether the topical version does anything- Slugging without wrecking your skin — plus the products to skip- Why acne scars and pigment need time, not another serumCheck out the full episode on all platforms: Hydrate With Tracy DuhsEpisode Links & Resources:Website: https://madalainaconti.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/madalainaconti/Connect with Tracy:Website: https://tracyduhs.com/Hydration Shop: https://sanctuarysd.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tracyduhs/Flow FAM Community: https://tracyduhs.com/join-flow-fam/

How can you enjoy sugar without gaining weight, fuelling cravings or crashing later in the day? The answer, surprisingly, is not to cut it out. In today's episode, Professor Tim Spector and Professor Sarah Berry discuss which forms of sugar affect your blood sugar levels most, and what small changes you can make today to reduce the impact. They also explore how sharp blood sugar spikes and dips may affect hunger, energy, inflammation and long-term health. By the end of the episode, you'll know how to spot hidden sugars, how to avoid the afternoon slump and energy crashes, and, most importantly, how to enjoy cake with less impact on your blood sugar. Sugar is not the enemy. But could a few small changes help you enjoy sweet foods without the cycle of cravings, hunger and energy crashes?

Skincare trends are moving fast, and it can be hard to tell what is actually worth your attention. One day everyone is talking about red light masks, then peptide lip balms, at-home microneedling, men's skincare, acne protocols, or another product claiming to be the next thing your skin needs. The problem is that some of these tools can be useful, but the way they are marketed often leaves out the context that matters most. A red light device is not just about wavelength. Acne is not just about bacteria. Peptides in skincare are not automatically effective just because the word is on the label. And not every trend deserves to become the center of your routine. In this Q&A episode of Biohacking Beauty, we're answering the skincare questions you sent in and breaking down what to look at before buying into the hype. We get into acne, red light therapy masks, at-home microneedling, men's skincare, and the peptide skincare problem so you can think about these trends with more science and less noise. What's Discussed:(03:14) Why acne is not just a bacteria problem.(07:24) What to know before buying a red light therapy mask.(13:36) The red light devices we actually use at home.(16:06) At-home microneedling, skin barrier risk, and where to draw the line.(21:02) Why men's skincare is mostly marketing.(25:10) What performance skincare may actually mean.(29:41) Why peptide skincare claims are harder to verify than they seem.Listen to this episode of Biohacking Beauty to understand which skincare trends deserve a closer look, what questions to ask before buying, and where the science matters more than the marketing.Find more from Young Goose:Use code PODCAST10 to get 10% OFF your first purchase, and if you're a returning customer use the code PODCAST5 to get 5% OFF at younggoose.comInstagram: @young_goose_skincare

Jensen spent years treating her acne, irregular cycles, and eating patterns as separate problems — until a PMOS (previously known as PCOS) diagnosis connected the dots. This episode breaks down how she stopped chasing symptoms and started actually healing. In this episode, Jensen walks through her full health journey — from childhood body image pressure and disordered eating, through years of unexplained acne and cycle irregularity, to finally getting a PMOS diagnosis and learning to treat the root cause instead of the symptoms. She shares what functional health coaching taught her about balance, hormone health, and healing without perfectionism.   Key Takeaways: PMOS (previously PCOS) symptoms like acne and irregular cycles are often treated as isolated issues — but they're usually connected to a bigger root cause. Restrictive eating patterns can quietly contribute to hormonal and metabolic dysfunction years down the line.  Real healing means shifting from symptom-chasing (spot treatments, quick fixes) to addressing root causes — and learning balance over perfection.   Chapters: 00:00 – Intro (the deer chase story) 06:00 – Childhood: Type A, "Glass Child Syndrome" & Control 11:42 – The Start of an Eating Disorder 15:09 – Binge Eating & Purging: What It Really Looked Like 18:14 – The Turning Point: Discovering Macros 20:27 – How Restriction Led to PCOS & Metabolic Damage 28:40 – The Acne Journey: From Age 13 to Present 33:37 – Getting the PCOS Diagnosis 45:09 – Cycle Syncing & Knowing Your Body 47:24 – Balance Over Perfection: The 80/20 Approach 53:08 – Bodybuilding, Burnout & Quitting Cold Turkey in Mexico   Want to Work With Us? Your acne isn't a mystery or a moral failing. It's a stack of small fixable things. Stop asking what's causing it... ask what you changed. I've struggled with adult acne for a decade. Deep, cystic, painful acne all over my cheeks and jaw. The kind you can't cover, because you can hide the redness but you can't hide the texture. I'd avoid certain lighting. Some mornings I'd go to put my makeup on and it hurt so much I'd just cry. I've spent thousands trying to fix it. Skin clinics, facials, peels, antibiotics, Roaccutane, expensive skincare, cheap skincare. If someone promised me clear skin, I tried it. And a few weeks ago I woke up, looked in the mirror, and went: hell no. Not this again. But this time I knew what to look for. And the fix was so simple I couldn't believe it. This week's episode is everything I wish I'd known years ago. The biggest shift was realising adult acne is almost never one thing... it's a stack of small things pouring gasoline on the fire. So now, instead of asking "what's causing my acne," I ask: "what have I changed?" This is for you if: You've tried everything for your adult acne and it still keeps coming back You're sick of "just drink more water" advice You want the real, unsexy stuff that actually clears skin In this episode: Adult acne is a stacking problem: ask "what have I changed?" not "what's causing it?"
