Everyone's starting a side business right now. A product, a brand, a little something on the side that might just take off. Acacia actually did it. She and her partner built PuraU, a natural skincare and gut brand, out of her own years of struggling with acne. And in this episode she tells the real story, not the highlight reel.It started with her own skin. Years of the pill, antibiotics, Accutane, naturopaths she could barely afford, and nothing that lasted. So she set out to build the thing she wished she'd had. What she's honest about is everything that came after. They launched to crickets and didn't make a sale for two weeks. They cold called journalists themselves when the expensive PR agency did nothing. It took three years before the business turned a profit, and three years before they paid themselves a wage.If you've ever sat on an idea waiting until you had enough money, or felt behind watching everyone else online look like an overnight success, this one will land. Acacia is proof that the unglamorous version is the real one, and that the people who make it are simply the ones who stick it out. What we coverBuilding PuraU from Acacia's own years of acne and trying everythingLaunching the website and not making a single sale for two weeksCold calling journalists herself instead of paying a PR agencyWhy a great product means nothing if nobody can find itLearning Facebook ads herself to stop relying on one off PR spikesThe three years it took before breaking through, making a profit, or paying themselvesComparison, social media, and the false reality of replacing your income in four weeksKnowing your customer because you were your customerPushing into chemists and skin clinics, and the setbacks that nearly broke themShe built it from nothing, on persistence not luck, and she's only just getting started. You'll find the whole range at purau.com.au, plus there's a quick skin quiz to find your own starting point.FAQsHow long does it really take to build a successful business? For Acacia and PuraU it took three years before the business made a profit or paid them a wage. The overnight success stories you see online usually hide years of work that happened before the launch.Do you need money and business experience to start a brand?Acacia was a nurse with no business background and sold her car to help fund the brand. What carried them was resilience and a willingness to learn each part themselves rather than pay someone else to do it.What is PuraU?PuraU is an Australian made skincare and gut health brand, formulated with microbiologists to treat the root cause of acne rather than the surface. It was created by Acacia and her partner out of their own experience with skin and gut issues.Mentioned in this episode:https://www.salonrising.com

Fungal acne is everywhere on social media, but most people are treating it completely wrong. In this episode of The Skin Real, Dr. Mary Alice Mina breaks down what fungal acne actually is: an overgrowth of malassezia yeast, not bacteria, and not true acne at all. She explains why standard acne treatments often fail, who's most at risk (think sweaty workouts, humid climates, tight clothing, and recent antibiotic use), and how to tell it apart from regular acne by looking at itch, uniformity, and the absence of blackheads or whiteheads. Dr. Mina walks through her go-to over-the-counter arsenal, including antifungal shampoos, sulfur washes, salicylic acid, and niacinamide, plus when it's time to see a dermatologist for prescription-strength options. She also shares the daily habits that keep flares from coming back. She shares how acne affected her confidence, daily life, and overall well-being, including the frustration and fear that remained even after completing a full course of Accutane. While conventional treatments initially provided temporary improvement, the acne eventually returned, leaving her searching for answers beyond symptom management alone.Through comprehensive functional testing and personalized support, deeper imbalances were uncovered, including digestive dysfunction, gut imbalances, mineral deficiencies, chronic bloating, fatigue, and stress-related depletion that were contributing to both her skin concerns and overall health symptoms. Abby and Carita discuss the importance of addressing the body holistically and how foundational support for digestion, nutrient status, and gut health became key components of her healing journey. They also explore the emotional side of healing chronic skin conditions, including the patience required when progress feels slow, the discouragement that can arise during setbacks, and the mindset shift necessary to move away from chasing quick fixes. Your skin is more than what it looks like. It's the largest organ in your body, it's the first responder talking to your nervous system, your immune system, and your endocrine system, and it's covered in a living microbiome that's quietly doing protective work for you all day. Which means the stuff you put on it matters way more than you've been told. Today's guest is Jodie Scott, cofounder of Green Goo and a master's level expert in health psychology and psychoneuroimmunology, which is the connection between your immune system, nervous system, and psychology. Jodie spent years studying how the body actually works before building plant based alternatives to common first aid and personal care products. She knows what's in the products on most shelves, where those chemicals came from, and how they're affecting your body in ways you can't see. In this episode you'll hear what your skin microbiome actually is and why it matters, how phthalates, parabens, and petroleum can disrupt your hormones, mood, and sleep, why the "if it stings, it's working" myth is doing real damage to teen skin, and how to read product labels using free apps like Yuka and EWG Skin Deep. Plus the simple skincare ritual Jodie's own daughter uses ("Sanctuary Sunday") that pulls double duty as a stress reset for your nervous system. What your skin microbiome is and why it matters more than the products on top of it Why phthalates, parabens, and petroleum are called endocrine disruptors and how they mess with your hormones How modern skincare chemicals affect cortisol, inflammation, serotonin, and sleep (the negative feedback loop) Why "if it stings, it's working" is one of the biggest skincare myths and what it's actually doing to your skin The plant ingredients that calm skin without breaking the skin barrier (lavender, rosemary, calendula, beeswax) How to read a product label and check it in 10 seconds with the Yuka app or EWG Skin Deep database Why Korean skincare and other trending products aren't automatically clean The "Sanctuary Sunday" ritual that supports your skin and resets your nervous system at the same time How acne, eczema, and skin flare ups are tied to what you're putting on your skin every day Why your purchases are votes that actually change what brands put on shelves Parents: This one connects directly to so many of the things your teen is already navigating. Acne flare ups, hormone shifts during puberty, sleep struggles, anxiety, mood swings. Jodie breaks down the connection between everyday skincare ingredients and the systems that are already in flux during the teen years, and she gives you simple free tools (the Yuka app and EWG Skin Deep database) you can use the next time you're shopping together. Dr. G has been using it since 2019, including once when he cut his finger open deep in the mountains of Tanga and used it instead of stitches. Eight days later it was nearly sealed. Three weeks later, no scar. After years of relying on Accutane, birth control, topical treatments, antibiotics, lasers, and restrictive diets, Jamie found herself frustrated by temporary solutions that never addressed the underlying causes of her skin concerns.Following the decision to come off birth control, Jamie experienced severe post-pill acne that significantly impacted her confidence and quality of life. Through comprehensive functional testing and personalized support, deeper imbalances were uncovered, including iron dysregulation, cortisol imbalances, digestive dysfunction, and mineral deficiencies that were contributing not only to her acne, but also to fatigue, poor sleep, and overall stress on the body.Abby and Jamie discuss the foundational strategies that helped support lasting skin improvements, including prioritizing hydration, balancing meals, supporting digestion, improving stress resilience, and focusing on nutrient-dense foods rather than restrictive elimination diets. Jamie also shares the emotional side of struggling with chronic acne and how gaining a deeper understanding of her body transformed both her skin health and confidence. This episode offers an encouraging perspective for anyone navigating persistent acne and highlights the importance of addressing the body holistically rather than relying solely on symptom-based treatments. So, listen now!Highlights:Jamie's experience with acne began during puberty and worsened after stopping birth controlThe limitations of conventional acne treatments, including Accutane, antibiotics, and topical therapiesWhy temporary symptom management failed to address the root causes of her skin concernsHow functional testing revealed iron dysregulation, cortisol imbalances, digestive dysfunction, and mineral deficienciesThe connection between low iron, fatigue, and inflammatory acneThe role of nutrition, hydration, digestion, and stress management in supporting skin healingWhy a non-restrictive, nutrient-focused approach made long-term healing more sustainableThe emotional impact of chronic acne and rebuilding confidence throughout the healing processHow understanding the body holistically created lasting improvements in both skin and overall wellnessConnect with Robyn:Instagram: @nutritionbyrobyn Website: https://www.theclearskinlab.com

Health/lifestyle consultant, 14-year carnivore and drummer Phil Escott got chronically ill as a vegetarian, and his body revolted with psoriatic arthritis and other autoimmune conditions in 2010, leaving him unable to move without severe pain, let alone drum or exercise, and he had to throw out all his existing “expertise” and start from scratch. Phil's eventual combination of a carnivore diet with EMF and artificial light avoidance, cold thermogenesis and a range of other health enhancing practices reversed the “incurable” diseases that he suffered from. His book “Arthritis, The Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me” gained a foreword by Dr. Jack Kruse and has become an Amazon Kindle bestseller and is now available in print. Phil talks from personal experience about contemporary lifestyle and diet choices, disconnects from our ancestral heritage, emotional balancing and the simple but often misunderstood nature of spiritual awakening. He now consults with clients worldwide helping them to reverse their metabolic and autoimmune issues and runs The Big Fat Challenge with Ben Hunt as his main project. His latest book, the "Red Pill Revolution" is awesome. Melissa Lim is a Canadian American Pharmacist and volleyball player/enthusiast. She was inspired by a previous episode with "meat militia" member Phil Escott and leader Dr Bart Kay. Dr. Day also explains her approach to facial balancing and how our bones, fascia, muscles, and fat pads age. Send us Fan MailIn this episode of Skin Anarchy, Dr. Ekta Yadav sits down with Oliver Liu of Hypothesis to unpack one of the most misunderstood areas in skincare today: the microbiome. While the term has become a marketing staple, this conversation reveals just how early we still are in understanding the microbial ecosystems that shape skin health—and why most current treatments fail to reflect that complexity.Oliver reframes common conditions like acne and eczema as problems of imbalance, not simple bacterial overgrowth. In eczema, a weakened barrier, immune dysregulation, and the presence of Staphylococcus aureus create a self-reinforcing cycle of inflammation and irritation. In acne, it's not the presence of bacteria that drives breakouts—but which strains dominate. This shift challenges the long-standing idea that eliminating bacteria altogether is the solution. That insight exposes a deeper flaw in traditional treatments. Broad-spectrum approaches like benzoyl peroxide and antibiotics remove both harmful and beneficial microbes, often leading to temporary relief followed by recurrence, increased sensitivity, and long-term imbalance. The conversation then turns to a new model: precision skincare. Inspired by naturally occurring enzymes, Oliver explains how targeted approaches can selectively eliminate harmful bacteria without disrupting the surrounding ecosystem—preserving balance while addressing the root cause. This episode ultimately reframes skincare as ecosystem management, not correction.Listen to the full episode to hear Oliver break down the science of the microbiome and why the future of skincare lies in precision, not force.Shop HypothesisDon't forget to subscribe to Skin Anarchy on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your preferred platform.Reach out to us through email with any questions.Sign up for our newsletter!Shop all our episodes and products mentioned through our ShopMy Shelf!*This is a sponsored collaborationSupport the show

In this episode of To The Root, Robyn Spangler provides a clear, evidence-informed breakdown of three common skin concerns: the connection between H. pylori and acne, why breakouts often flare after travel, and the deeper physiological factors that can contribute to persistent neck acne.Robyn explains how infections like H. pylori rarely occur in isolation—they often take advantage of underlying vulnerabilities such as low minerals, poor metabolic function, or digestive imbalance. She also explores the mechanisms behind post-vacation skin disruptions, from halogen exposure in water to microbiome shifts and changes in environmental toxicants. For those struggling with neck acne, Robyn emphasizes the importance of evaluating the lymphatic system, iodine status, mineral balance, and gut health, rather than relying on generic or surface-level solutions. Her professional yet practical guidance underscores the core principle of functional dermatology: meaningful, lasting skin improvements come from addressing the internal terrain—not just the symptoms.Listen now!If you're ready to understand your skin on a deeper level and want professional support in interpreting your labs or developing a personalized plan, the Clear Skin Lab team is here to help. Holden Hughes was a 14-year-old freshman and football player at an elite CaliforniaCatholic school when he put on a friend's prescription acne mask at asleep over. Three years later, in the summer of 2020 during Covid shutdowns andBLM protests, a parent obtained that old photo, posted it to social media calling it “blackface,” and organized a protest at the school, all within hours. By the next day, St. Francis High School told Holden and his family:withdraw or be expelled. No investigation. No hearing. No due process. In spring 2024, a California jury sided with Holden and set a legal precedent that private high schools must provide fair procedure before expelling students. Dr.Phil sits down with Holden and his parents, Frank and Wendy, to hear his story: what really happened that night, what the mob did to his family, and whether a jury verdict can give back the senior year, and the reputation, that was taken from him.Thank you to our sponsors that made this episode possible:You Can Do It Foundation supports meaningful media that reflects faith, family, personal responsibility, and freedom.
