2026 June 14 | This week Pastor Evan continues our Genesis sermon series in Genesis 4:1-26 on the story of Cain and Abel and the and how comparison can consume us. Genesis 4:1-26 Cain and Abel 4 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten1 a man with the help of the Lord.” 2 And again, she bore his brother Abel. The voice of your brother's blood cis crying to me from the ground. 11 And now dyou are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.” 13 Cain said to the Lord, “My epunishment is greater than I can bear.5 14 Behold, fyou have driven me today away from the ground, and gfrom your face I shall be hidden. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, hand whoever finds me will kill me.” 15 Then the Lord said to him, “Not so! If anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him isevenfold.” And the Lord jput a mark on Cain, lest any who found him should attack him. 16 Then Cain went away from the presence of the Lord and settled in the land of Nod,6 east of Eden. 17 Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. When he built a city, he called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch. 18 To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad fathered Mehujael, and Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech. 19 And Lamech took two wives. The name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. 20 Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock. 21 His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe. 22 Zillah also bore Tubal-cain; he was the forger of all instruments of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah. 23 Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; you wives of Lamech, listen to what I say: I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me. 24 kIf Cain's revenge is sevenfold, then Lamech's is seventy-sevenfold.” 25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, “God has appointed7 for me another offspring instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.” 26 To lSeth also a son was born, and he called his name mEnosh. Zombies, mold, and survival skills—yep, it's another classic Hey Maaan episode as Josh and Jacob debate The Last of Us, getting high, and who'd last longer in the apocalypse. This episode dives deep into post-apocalyptic logic, zombie rankings, wild TV deaths, and why mold might actually be the most realistic cause of a zombie outbreak. Plus, Josh and Jacob go off on who's the better survivor, whose junk works better, and whether desert fires are even real.

I remember one of the great heartaches of my own adolescent years was a battle with face acne. I was raised in family where time and regular face-washing was seen as the remedy to something I dreamed I would one day grow out of. In today's social-media-fueled image and appearance conscious world, teenagers have a host of preventive and treatment options at their fingertips. I recently discovered one of those remedies while making small talk with a twenty-something ticket agent at an airport. I asked her about the bright blue star sticker she displayed prominently on her cheek. “Oh!” she said without hesitation. “That's a pimple patch!” Chances are you'll see more of these medicated decorative accessories. Now you know what they are! Bear with me here when I suggest these patches offer us a teachable moment. From a theological perspective, we can reference these as remedies to deal with the effects of human sin and brokenness that appear even on our skin.

In our final episode of the season, we look at how to turn the challenges of the 4th nine-weeks into incredible learning opportunities that improve outcomes.  Simply put, effective teachers are at their best in May.  We don't "mail it in" or give up.  We aren't just trying to survive.  Instead, we are leveraging the relationships we have built and the academic grit we have developed to help students achieve more than ever.  

When we first become Christians, we're spiritual newborns. But as we grow in our relationship with God, we reach a point of "adolescence" where we begin to think we can do things on our own. The trouble is, the more we develop the rebellious attitude that goes along with adolescence, the worse off we are in the Body of Christ. At some point, we need to mature spiritually into fully-grown adults, take responsibility, and do our part in the work of the Church.

When we become Christians, it's as if we are spiritual babies. As we grow in our spiritual life we reach a point of adolescence where we begin to do things on our own. The more we develop an adolescent rebellious attitude the worse off we are in the Body, but when we continue to grow we can help the Body of Christ be taking responsibility and doing our part in the work together. Jim Borgman, a Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist and creator of the cartoon strip Zits, joins the podcast to discuss his love for the Cincinnati Reds.
