EXPERIENCE THE WEST – This phrase means something different to everyone. Thoughts of cowboys, mountains, desert and the American ranching experience. How does one experience the west without traveling? How can you get the true feel of the American cowboy when you can’t be there with them. One way is through the eyes of Tim Cox. Tim paints what he knows; cowponies covered in sweat after a hard day, a cutting horse intent on holding that cow, ranch horses sharing a well-earned drink at a glistening water trough. His cattle have authentic expressions; calves perhaps a little bewildered at a branding, a longhorn steer intent on leaving the country, or a herd just shuffling along - being driven to better pastures. Ranchers, cutters, team ropers, or cowhands, all of them touch Tim’s heart. Add a striking landscape with clear blue skies; wispy pink clouds or spectacular thunderheads and you have a Tim Cox painting. On this episode I have the privilege of visiting the artist Tim Cox as well as his wife Suzie, his long time supporter and business partner. Tim Cox is one of America’s best known western artists and if you don’t know his work then you will be pleasantly surprised to discover it. Tim’s authenticity and inspiring vision of the American west has not come quickly or easily. Tim, along with his wife Suzie have paid their dues. Hard work, long days and isolated cow camps are things they know very well. However, the hard work and endless nights of painting until dawn are finally paying off. He is one of the best known western artists, having been voted into the U. S. Art Magazine¹s Print Hall of Fame in 2000. Dozens of his Limited Edition Prints have sold out through the years, some as quickly as 3 weeks. Sales of his popular calendar line, which started in 1986, are nearing 10 million. One of the best compliments paid to his calendars is that you often see his tear off style calendars complete, late in the year. People will lift the pages rather than tear them off. Tim's paintings have appeared on over 300 magazine covers through the years, and he has been featured in articles of at least 16 different publications. Tim is a fourth generation Arizonan, born and raised in the ranching lifestyle. He now resides outside of Bloomfield, New Mexico, where he continues to raise a few cattle and train horses with his family. https://www.timcox.com/ https://www.facebook.com/Tim.Cox.Cowboy.Art/ https://www.instagram.com/timcoxfineart/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/suzie-cox-3902a241/
Would you run your company for free? How hard would you be willing to work? Imagine long days of hard labor. Nights spent out in the cold. Working hungry, thirsty. In weather that’s too hot and dry or too cold and wet. And at the end of the year trying to figure out how to make ends meet. Letting your spouse work another job just to pay the bills. This is how many ranchers feel. Unfortunately, this is a situation that is quite common throughout the United States. But our friends at Ranch Management Consultants are out to change this. RMS has a long, successful track record of equipping ranchers with the tools and insights to transform their ranch into a sustainable business. In the midst of our country under self-quarantine from the COVID_19 virus, many people are struggling with acquiring the bare essentials such as food. My guest this week, Nicole Canamare, along with her husband and children operates C5 Farms in Jefferson Georgia where they host their Open Farm days and encourage families from the area to visit the farm and immerse themselves in the farming lifestyle. We discuss everything from her picturesque front porch to putting piglets in the mail. Thanks for listening and I hope you enjoy. Wildfires in Texas have had devastating effects on landowners, communities, and ecosystems. Since 2005, 11 Million acres have burned across the state. Seventy-five percent of wildfires burned within one mile of a community. The largest and fastest moving of wildfires typically occur across the Panhandle and the western half of Texas. My guests on this episode of Ranchcast are the men in combat with those fires. They are also behind some of the best programs designed to aid landowners and cities with planning, prevention and response to wildfires. Jim Cooper & Steven Moore from the Texas A&M Forest Service share their extensive knowledge on fighting wildfires. They discuss some of the programs in place including the brand new Texas Ranch Wildfire Program designed to partner with private landowners using specific fire prevention methods to create a safety net for the most fire vulnerable cities in the state. You will learn how to access programs for land management, fire prevention, response planning and where to find financial assistance in your area. Told in the cinematic tradition of classic westerns, “COWBOYS - A Documentary Portrait” is a feature-length film that gives viewers the opportunity to ride alongside modern working cowboys on some of America's largest and most remote cattle ranches. The movie documents the lives of the men and women working on these "big outfit" ranches - some of which are over one million acres - and still require full crews of horseback mounted workers to tend large herds of cattle. My guest on this episode of Ranchcast is none other than Bud Force, co-director and cinematographer of this feature length film. Bud along with his co-director John Langmore, spent two years filming on 8 of the largest ranches in the country. The result is story is steeped in authenticity that explores the rewards and hardships of a celebrated but misunderstood way of life. Bud and I discuss the challenges of filming, the people and friendships made along the way, and the excitement to see it come to its world premiere in hometown Austin Texas. “COWBOYS - A Documentary Portrait” has its world premiere at the Austin Film Festival on October 25, 2019 at the Paramount Theatre. This episode of RANCHCAST with LEM LEWIS, I interview third generation general manager, Shay Myers, where we discuss the innovative practices implemented by family run Froerer Farms and its Owhyee brand of onions. A third generation produce business based in Nyssa, Oregon, Froerer Farms actively involves several generations from eight different core families related by blood or marriage. Froerer Farms is a model of a well-run, vertically integrated, produce grower and packer. Over the years, the operation has worked hard to remove as many of the profit sucking middlemen as possible from the chain of custody of its farm grown onions, asparagus, mint, yams, and other crops. Among other lessons that Shay offers, is a clear understanding of what it takes to breathe fresh life into a long established business. If you’re thinking about selling your agricultural property, I would be honored to discuss how my colleagues and I may become your trusted ranch broker. Many, through years of hard work and planning build up land and wealth and the last thing they need is to lose it in a preventable lawsuit. Tiffany Dowell Lashmet has served as an agricultural law specialist for Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service since 2013. Tiffany's work focuses on legal issues impacting Texas landowners and agricultural producers, including leases, water law, oil and gas law, pipeline easement negotiation, and landowner liability. Tiffany is licensed to practice law in Texas and New Mexico. She grew up on her family's farm and ranch in northeastern New Mexico between Tucumcari and Logan. On this edition of RANCHCAST with LEM LEWIS, Tiffany and I discuss leases, water law, fencing law issues, the Texas Agritourism Act and how to find the right attorney for the issue you are facing. As you will hear, her experience and expertise far outweigh the amount of time that we had for just this interview. If you’re thinking about selling your agricultural property, I would be honored to discuss how my colleagues and I may become your trusted ranch broker.
Chris Nolt, the author of Financial Strategies for Selling a Farm or Ranch, provides an excellent overview of the issues involved in completing the successful sale of a ranch or farm, and of the tax traps that many unprepared property sellers fall into. After a lifetime of hard work – sometimes over generations – when the time comes to sell their ranch or farm, many families don’t realize how high the stakes can be. Failure to plan ahead, or improper planning, can cost families much of the potential value vested in their properties. Two of Nolt’s favorite vehicles for legally and efficiently minimizing capital gains taxes on the sale of agricultural properties are the 1031 Tax-Deferred Exchange and the Charitable Remainder Trust. On this edition of RANCHCAST with LEM LEWIS, Chris spells out the advantages of both 1031 Tax-Deferred Exchanges and Charitable Remainder Trusts, and also the restrictions that apply to both.
Today’s American Economy Can Trace Its Roots to Yesteryear’s Cattle Barons The real Old West – not the Hollywood version – was quite different than the one most of us have been taught. Even us ranchers and rural producers will be surprised by the intimate view and almost tactical sense of what it was really like in the 19th Century to be a cowboy that can be found in the book, Cattle Kingdom: The Hidden History of the Cowboy West.
Entrepreneurial-Minded Rural Landowners: Texas Olive Ranch Has Spawned a Growing Industry Jim Henry and the Henry Family Are Models of Innovation and Stick-to-Itiveness After living and working in Spain, where he noticed the climate and trees were similar to parts of Texas, Jim Henry wondered why no one in his native Texas was growing olives commercially. He thought Texas could be host to a thriving olive oil business and he set out to prove it.
An Exclusive Interview with Filmmaker Graham Meriwether Ahead of the national premiere of Farmers for America, host Lem Lewis, The Ranch Broker, interviews filmmaker Graham Meriwether about the documentary that aims to celebrate and inspire the next generation of American farmers and ranchers.
There’s just something about Texans, especially entrepreneurs, that you won’t find in any other state. Dan Garrison, proprietor of Garrison Brothers Distillery, tells RANCHCAST with LEM LEWIS that his fellow Texans are as distinctive, proud, and unique as his award-winning bourbons. “Anyone who lives in Texas for more than three months adopts that Texas pride,” Dan says. We’ve selected 99 Reasons We Love Ranching™. Reason #50: Garrison Brothers Bourbon. Why do you love ranching?
My guest on this episode, Dr. Matt Wagner, is someone who I know enjoys the outdoors as much as I do. Dr. Wagner is the definitive expert on wildlife conservation, range land management, and the Texas laws and policies governing them. I could invite him on every episode of this show and I know that I’d never grow tired of hearing what he has to say. Dr. Wagner spent 28 years with the Wildlife Division of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, most recently as Deputy Director. He is an adjunct faculty member of the Biology Department at Texas State University, where he teaches Wildlife Law and Policy. He also works under contract as a project administer with the Wildlife Management Institute, which has supported game management, biological diversity, and ecology since its founding in 1911. As if that is not enough, Dr. Wagner has extensive experience working with and advising private landowners such as me. And Dr. Wagner is a believer in the important role that privately owned land plays in the well-being of wildlife and wildlife habitat. On this edition of RANCHCAST with LEM LEWIS, Dr. Wagner and I will discuss two big issues impacting wildlife conservation in Texas. One is the the loss of connection between people and the rural lifestyle, and two, the distribution and allocation of water. Because Dr. Wagner is so knowledgeable, he and I also explore the impact of exotic wildlife and the efforts to manage them. We talk about statewide land stewardship programs and we even review efforts to privatized white tailed deer. And finally Dr. Wagner and I discuss the subject of chronic wasting disease in Texas. If you own a ranch, are thinking about buying a ranch, or simply love the ranching lifestyle, you're going to want to hear what Dr. Matt Wagner has to say.
Last year, I attended The Wizard Academy’s Reputation Tool Chest workshop taught by award-winning business journalist, Dean Rotbart. Dean is the host of Monday Morning Radio, a popular business-to-business podcast that in 2016 alone attracted more than a quarter-million listeners. With Dean’s help, I launched RANCHCAST with LEM LEWIS earlier this year, and I’m pleased that Dean continues to work with me to build our RANCHCAST audience and ensure the quality of our episodes. This week Dean and I share hosting duties – combining our two audiences for a very special interview. Our guest is Michele Payn, a nationally recognized influencer in the large, growing, and very successful farm-to-table movement. Michele is CEO of Cause Matters Corp., a consulting firm that advises companies and individuals on how to influence public discourse surrounding agriculture, health, and nutrition topics. This week Michele celebrates the official publication of her newest book: “Farm Truths – From Farm to Table.” While my expertise is in ranching, farming, and rural real estate, Dean is an expert on small business, reputation management, and effective communication. Together we explore with Michele both the business and the nutrition aspects of ranching and farming, and debunk some of the most common food myths. Photo: Michele Payne, Cause Matters Corp. The Ficke Family has been ranching and running a livestock operation in Pleasant Dale, Nebraska since 1888. Today, Del Ficke and the Ficke Cattle Company are role models for successful, holistically-managed, independently owned, profitable rural producers. On this week’s RANCHCAST with host Lem Lewis, Del shares his disruptive techniques for making ranching and farming both more profitable and more satisfying. Better still, Del is showing rural producers how to manage their land so that their children and grandchildren will be incentivized to stay at home or return there. As Del travels the country, speaking to groups and working one-on-one with producers, Del often encounters those ranchers and farmers who think his ideas are crazy. At first. But when they hear Del out and see what he’s been able to accomplish on his own ranch and for his consulting clients, Del’s stature quickly transforms from: lunatic to genius.
My guest this week is a farmer, a barn builder, a philanthropist, and a patriot. But to his legions of fans, country music artist Richard Lynch, a member of the Independent Country Music Hall of Fame, is a: chart-topping knee-stomping guitar-picking down-to-earth singer/songwriter whose authentic music captures the heart and soul of American ranchers, farmers, and other country folk.
Paul Francis is best known as the inventor of a technology that allows orbiting astronauts on the International Space Station to stay fit in the weightless environment. His resistive exercise device has been used by more than 50 space travelers.
Ranch land prices should continue to rise in 2017, although not as rapidly as they did in the robust years of 2014 and 2015. That is the assessment of one of the nation’s leading ranch economists, Dr. Charles E. Gilliland, who recently shared his full analysis with Lem Lewis, host of the RANCHCAST with LEM LEWIS podcast. Dr. Gilliland is a professor in the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University and a research economist – specializing in rural land and property taxes – at the university’s Real Estate Center. Lem Lewis, well-known as “The Ranch Broker,” is a fourth-generation Texas rancher whose full-service brokerage company serves both land buyers and sellers, concentrating on the Texas Hill Country, South Texas, and West Texas. More than oil prices and interest rates, Dr. Gilliland explains in his interview with RANCHCAST that ranch land values in Texas are tied to population, job, and wage growth. Photo: Dr. Charles E.
