Abortion, the border and the third-party vote are likely to dominate the 2024 presidential election, a bipartisan panel of political experts argued at ASU last week. Why are Arizonan's not worried about water?
Trust in the election system in Arizona is eroding. Some may even say it's broken all together. One side says the vulnerability of voting machines and delay in election results is what makes the system distrustful. This was most obvious during the Maricopa County recount of the 2020 ballots that lasted months. The other side says it's the new found distrust in the system that makes it broken. But either way a question remains among most American, and specifically Arizonan, voters: how can we make elections better? This question fuels the work of David Becker. He is a co-founder of the Center for Election Innovation and Research and he believes that technology and reliance on data can help us toward improving elections. He also helped launch the Election Official Legal Defense Network, which connections election officials with free legal advice. This week on Election Dissection, an elections series of The Gaggle podcast by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, hosts Mary Jo Pitzl and Sasha Hupka sit down with Becker to discuss why he's confident in the safety of our elections systems, how America ended up in this position and why he's keeping an eye on those who oppose Donald Trump come next January. In Rim to River: Looking into the Heart of Arizona (University of Arizona Press, 2023), Tom Zoellner, a fifth-generation Arizonan, takes the reader on a walk across the length of the state, his narrative interspersed with essays on Arizona's history, culture and politics. Our conversation focuses on such topics as how Arizona anticipated the Trump Era in America—how “the scent of oncoming Trumpism,” as he writes in Rim to River, became such a pronounced feature of his native state's political and cultural landscape. Yet the story of Arizona remains in flux, as migrants pour in not just from across the border with Mexico but from fellow U.S. states. Zoellner's Arizona may yet end up foreshadowing America's post-Trump future. Veteran journalist Paul Starobin is a former Moscow bureau chief for Business Week and a former contributing editor of The Atlantic. He has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and many other publications. His most recent book is Putin's Exiles: Their Fight for a Better Russia (Columbia Global Reports, 2024). Learn more about your ad choices. Hundreds and hundreds of Arizonans are emailing the show, saying they voted on election day, but the state of Arizona's database claims otherwise. What's going on? Is it a nothingburger, or incompetence, or something more sinister? Charlie investigates one of the most confusing and infuriating aspects of Arizona's election that no one seems to have a good answer for, and then asks what can be done about the thousands of Maricopa voters who were disenfranchised because of machine malfunctions. Plus, Charlie explores whether Democrats' superior ballot-curing operation is behind their streak of surprising victories.Support the show: http://www.charliekirk.com/supportSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
