What to know about purchasing a used RV. Learn about cruise ship life, or eyeing alligator boots—how about a hunting adventure plus TSA ID rules. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Season 5, Episode 241 What to Know Before Hitting the Road in a 20-Year-Old Class C Motorhome Buying a used motorhome can be the start of a grand adventure—or a roadside disaster. Here's what to inspect and prepare before taking off. Inspect the Core Systems Engine & Transmission: Hire a mechanic to inspect the drivetrain. Leaks, odd noises, or sluggish shifting can spell big trouble. Roof & Seals: Check for soft spots or water damage. Even a pinhole can turn into a pricey repair. Electrical & Plumbing: Test every outlet, light, and water system. A short or leak on the road is no fun. Don't Skip These Pre-Trip Checks Replace tires older than 5-7 years, regardless of tread. Flush and sanitize the freshwater system. Test brakes and lights, including turn signals and trailer hookups. Stock your toolkit: duct tape, fuses, jumper cables, sealant, and extra fluids. Lastly the biggest step before leaving on a long trip, try out the RV or camper close to home on a couple of small trips. This is so important in order to fully understand how all of the equipment works, handles on the road to even parking or leveling. Too often we are overly excited and just want "TO GO"... But that's when disaster or unwanted extra stresses or costs can come into play. So try out that "New To You" RV or Camper and hit the road! But there's one thing your Costco card can't do... and that's get you on a plane. Yep, the TSA has officially shut down the rumor that your warehouse club membership counts as a REAL ID. Despite the shiny star on the card or even a photo on your app, it's not a valid ID for flying. Period. The TSA put it perfectly: “We love hot dogs and rotisserie chickens too… but please stop telling people your Costco card is a REAL ID. It absolutely is not.” Since May 7, you now need a REAL ID, passport, or other federally approved photo ID to fly domestically. Show up with your shopping card? You might miss your flight — and no one wants that. So, pack smart, fly smart… and save the Costco card for the snack aisle, not the security line. In Texas, that now includes hunting the leather yourself. Houston-based Republic Boot Company is offering a $5,000 package that comes with a guided East Texas gator hunt — and a pair of custom cowboy boots made from your very own alligator. That price tag also covers your hunting guide, firearms, tags from Texas Parks and Wildlife, and even a head mount of your gator. But you'll need a group of four or more to book the trip — and a little patience. The custom boots take about eight months to make, since tanning gator hide doesn't happen overnight. The hunts are going down this fall near Anahuac — also known as the Alligator Capital of Texas — during the short but wild gator season, September 11th through the 30th. Owner Chris Conrad says while most people associate gator hunting with the “big, gnarly” beasts seen on TV, those larger alligators typically have bigger and rougher scales that aren't ideal for leather working. Eight-foot gators are just right — tough enough for the hunt, but perfect for premium leather. So if you're ready for the full Texas experience — boots, bayou, and big reptiles — this one's for you. RAYMONDVILLE, Texas - Working with Willacy County Navigation District, leaders of the Texas Youth Hunting Program have helped quell the once sizable deer population in the Port Mansfield area. The Texas Youth Hunting Program, administered by Texas Parks & Wildlife, helps teach young people how to hunt responsibly, with safety to the fore. “We're helping Fort Mansfield. They were having a little trouble with the deer population inside the city limits,” explained TYHP organizer Gabe Lozano, III. “The deer were eating too much corn that the people were taking out and they were beginning to founder, which means their hooves start growing up. And they had lost their wild nature. They were no longer grazing. They were just waiting for corn. They were waiting for the candy all the time.” Founder, also known as laminitis, is a condition that causes a deer's hooves to grow beyond normal, resulting in long hooves. It occurs when the sensitive tissue that connects the hoof wall to the pedal bone, called the laminae, is damaged. This can happen for a number of reasons, including diet. A sudden change in diet to high-carb, high-starch, or high-protein foods, especially corn, can cause a nutritional imbalance. This can lead to a buildup of acid in the deer's system. Lozano said TYHP and the navigation district brought in the Texas Animal Commission to address Port Mansfield's deer problem. “Today, people cannot bring corn anymore and feed the animals here in Willacy County, because they know it's hurting the animals' grazing. It's hurting what they're doing. You can drive out there now, and they're not all standing around the pad. They're in the fields eating. Instead of them sitting around the pad, waiting and getting fat, they're out grazing again.” In addition to helping address Port Mansfield's deer issue, young people are being trained how to become responsible hunters, Lozano said. “So, these kids get to take it home and eat what they harvest,” he explained. TYHP are doing four deer hunts at Port Mansfield this year, Lozano said. One of them concluded this weekend. The next will take place in January. “With the help of the State of Texas, we have a $3 million liability insurance plan, which covers the ranches that these kids are hunting on, that these youth are hunting on. This allows the local ranches a chance to let these kids learn to hunt, which means what? (It means) we're going to have a whole new generation of hunters.” In a podcast with Ron Whitlock Reports, Gabe Lozano, III, discussed the Texas Youth Hunting Program and the need for safety in hunting. Why aren't more sportsmen up in arms regarding the way TPWD changed mountain lion regulatory policy without any science to support a need for change? Pandering to the anti hunters is a new step (in the wrong direction) for Texas Parks and Wildlife, and one that gives me a great deal of concern. The advancement [...]

Texas Parks and Wildlife has proposed two major changes in mountain lion management. The question is, why? Mountain lions are treated as a non game species in Texas with no closed season or bag limit. But don't let that fact lead you to believe that Texas hunters are out killing mountain lions indiscriminately, we aren't. [...]
“Sky carp” and “Saving the Tundra” are phrases that have become commonplace in the vernacular of light goose hunters across North America. Although born from well-intentioned conversations around once-hyperabundant light geese and the Light Goose Conservation Order, waterfowl managers consider these derogatory phrases undeserved and unfortunate. On this episode, Kevin Kraai of Texas Parks and Wildlife makes the case for changing this narrative and bringing respect back to light geese. We also dig into data showing an 86% decline in the midcontinent light goose population, shrinking breeding colonies, recovery of arctic staging grounds, and new science on how repeated disturbance may influence light goose body condition. If this evolving story tells us anything it's that what we know today is likely different from what we'll learn in the future and why we should never stop asking questions.www.ducks.org/DUPodcast
Beginning in spring 2025, for the first time in over 25 years, light geese wintering in Texas will find it a quieter and more welcoming place. That is because in April 2024, Texas became the first state to officially end their use of the Federally allowed Light Goose Conservation Order. On this episode, Kevin Kraai, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) waterfowl program manager, joins Chris Jennings and Dr. Mike Brasher to discuss this recent decision and explain the reasoning behind it. Join us for part 1 of this fascinating and intricate story about how the complex interplay of numerous factors are driving changes in Texas waterfowling, why TPWD believes the Conservation Order is no longer needed, and what they hope to achieve by ending it in their state.www.ducks.org/DUPodcast
When I got wind that Texas Parks and Wildlife was considering cancelling the long standing spring snow goose conservation season (you know, the one where you take the plug out of your shotgun and there's no daily bag limit) I was immediately intrigued. WHY? The conservation order has been in place since the mid 1980s. [...]
Host Bob St.Pierre is joined by three biologists from Oklahoma and Texas to discuss the massive wildfires in the panhandle areas of both states in recent weeks, as well as the impact those wildfires have had on upland birds. Those biologists include Tell Judkins, upland game biologist with Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation; John McLaughlin, upland game program leader with Texas Parks & Wildlife Department; and Thomas Janke, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever's state coordinator for Texas. Episode Highlights: • Judkins and McLaughlin provide a recap of the massive number of acres burned and provide an update on the impact those wildfires have had on wildlife populations so far. • Janke explains difference between wildfires and prescribed fires, as well as the critically important role prescribed fire plays in properly managing upland habitat to maximize potential for wildlife. • Judkins and McLaughlin explain the concept of “fighting fire with fire” and the dual role prescribed fire plays in mitigating the risk and impact of wildfires.
