Matt Wagner, creator of the legendary independent titles Grendel and Mage, shares his journey to become one of comics' most respected writer-artists. Our conversation explores the origins and complex publication history of his signature character Grendel, which debuted in Comico Primer #2, as well as the creative process and development behind the more personal Mage trilogy. Beyond his creator-owned work, Matt discusses his affinity for pulp characters like Batman, The Shadow, Green Hornet, and Zorro in his work for DC and Dynamite, explaining why these characters resonate with him stylistically and thematically, while also touching on his distinctive work on Demon. He shares the thinking behind DC's Trinity, and his current collaboration with Kelley Jones on the ambitious Dracula series. In 2024, we published 58 Comic Book Couples Counseling episodes. However, that was not the total Comic Book Couples Counseling experience. Over on our Patreon, we published an additional 61 episodes, including our Married to Singlesseries, where we talk with comic book creators about their favorite single issues. In 2025, we'll make these a regular thing, starting with Tyler Crook this week, diving deep into his cherished Mage: The Hero Discovered #6. Crook has appeared on the podcast multiple times, mostly exploring his exceptional Dark Horse Comics series, The Lonesome Hunters (links to those episodes below). He's a passionate, enthusiastic champion of this medium, and that devotion began at a very young age thanks to books like Mage: The Hero Discovered. We enjoyed this conversation with Crook about this comic so much that we've decided to drop it into the main podcast feed to entice some of you over to the CBCC Patreon, which we consider one of the most welcoming, loving comic book communities on the internet. Published by Comico in March of 1985, Mage: The Hero Discovered #6 landed just as the industry shifted. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 arrived the year before, while Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns were just on the horizon. Comics were ready to celebrate themselves as thematically rich, adult entertainment. NOT. KIDS. STUFF. Mage: The Hero Discovered #6 was written and illustrated by Matt Wagner and features additional inks by Sam Kieth. The series follows Kevin Matchstick, who is basically a stand-in for Wagner, as he tumbles into a fantasy adventure where each obstacle represents some issue or situation from his own life. Be warned, our conversation with Tyler Crook spoils the entirety of the sixth issue, as well as some critical plot points from the rest of the series. Although, knowledge of those plot points won't ruin your overall reading experience if you decide to read after you've listened to the episode. We make the Comic Book Couples Counseling Patreon as cheap as we can. Our "Smitten Kitten" level costs only a dollar and gives you access to all the Patreon episodes. Our "Dearly Beloved" tier is $5, which grants you access to our Slack community. For the month of January, we're donating all proceeds made by our Patron to BINC (The Book Industry Charitable Foundation). They're helping all the bookstores and comic book shops affected by the LA Wildfires, and Bookshop.org matches all donations up to $10,000. If you would prefer to support another charity aiding in the wake of the LA Wildfires, here are a few that we'd recommend: The Red Cross Wildfire Disaster Relief LA Food Banks Assisting After Fires The LAFD Foundation World Central Kitchen Help provides fresh meals to communities in need in California The California Community Foundation Pasadena Humane Helps with Animal Rescue and Care Baby2Baby Provides Essential items such as diapers, food, formula, and hygiene products for children and families in Los Angeles. HOLY COW! I've got not one but two comics legends hanging out with me today on the podcast, Matt Wagner and Kelley Jones. I've been a fan of Matt's Grendel work for decades, geez that's a long time, and Kelley is the definitive Batman artist in my mind. They are crowdfunding the second volume of their new series Dracula: The Brides, redefining the classic mythology both narratively and visually in a way I've never seen before. This is truly a dream come true for me as a comics fan and one of the most unique interview experiences I've ever had, they are such pros that I was just pretty much along for the bloody ride. I was a backer for Volume One: The Impaler and I've got my pledge in already for Volume Two: The Brides. Crowdfunding is the only way you can get these in hardcover so don't miss out, and if you don't trust me.... "Wow-in a good way, and I'm a Dracula snob so that's saying something. This is a wild ride that sails beyond the Borgo Pass--and I believe this may well be the book Kelley Jones was born to draw. Here is all the mood and horror I would expect from him, but also a level of crazy (good crazy) that I've never seen from him before. --- Mike Mignola From the campaign The first volume of Wagner and Jones's DRACULA saga was a runaway hit, breaking the Top 20 in Kickstarter's all-time most successful graphic novel campaigns. DRACULA: BOOK II—THE BRIDES presents 120 pages of sexy and sinister story and art, almost 30 pages longer than BOOK I. Wagner and Jones are once again joined for this creepy foray into the shadows of Castle Dracula by the stellar talents of José Villarrubia on colors and lettering by Rob Leigh. This campaign is the only source for these beautiful, European-album sized hardcover editions of this book as well as our other exceptional rewards tiers. Back this project today and ensure your copy of these incredible exclusive editions! If you like what we do, please consider supporting us. We got two simple tiers, $1 and $3. I'll be uploading a story every Sunday about some of the crazy things I've gotten into over the years. The first one dropped last week about me relocating a drug lord's sharks. Yes, it did happen, and the alligators didn't even get in the way. Want to know more, you know what to do. Our episode sponsors From Within on Kickstarter From Within is a martial arts revenge graphic novel about a slave fighting his way through a deadly tournament where the rules shift at the whims of a tyrannical emperor. It's a mash-up of the high-impact action sequences of Bruce Lee's films with the paranoid thriller undercurrent found in Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips' Sleeper series. Late pledges are enabled if you happen to hear about it after the campaign officially ends. Arkenforge Play TTRPG games? Make sure to check out our partner Arkenforge. Dracula permeates everything. Before we're five years old, we know his story. It's baked into the cultural imagination. However, if you were to hold that story up to the light, you'd immediately notice a lot of holes. In Bram Stoker's iconic work, Dracula appears less frequently than you would think, and his backstory is referenced in short bursts and shrouded in mystery. His tale is perfect fodder for artists Kelley Jones and Matt Wagner to sink their teeth into. Last year, they published Dracula - Book One: The Impaler through Orlok Press via Kickstarter. The hardcover has spent months in the hands of readers (ours included), and its trade paperback release from Dark Horse Comics is set for October 22nd. With the first chapter complete, exploring Dracula's pre-vampire days, set primarily during his time at the Scholomance, aka his unpaid internship with the devil, Jones and Wagner are ready to unleash volume two, Dracula: The Brides. Their latest entry covers centuries, focusing on how Dracula came into contact with the iconic trio, who get pages in Stoker's book but have seared their way into every adaptation. Who are they? What do they mean to Dracula? What happened to the fourth Bride? Dracula: The Brides will take Kelley Jones and Matt Wagner right up until the moment Bram Stoker's novel begins. This means their next chapter dissects the classic and exposes what the Impaler was up to when the other characters were not paying attention. We happily dig into Dracula with Kelley Jones and Matt Wagner on the podcast. We discuss the title character's relationship with romance, women, and blood. We uncover Jones and Wagner's compulsion to tell this story and why comics were always the best fit for it. Dracula: The Brides has fifteen days left on its Kickstarter campaign. This is a tough one. This week we celebrate the life and career of Bernie Mireault. Bernie was a friend to the show and would always answer questions whenever we messaged him. Bernie was a visionary creator that made comics that not only inspired a whole generation of creators but also changed the look of the "superhero" forever. Not just in comics but in art as a whole. He was an amazing musician as well, and we feature some of his music here. Ben and I flip through a bunch of The Jam comics, the Mackenzie Queen trade, Madman and The Jam and more. I would def suggest watching the video version of this one. Bernie's TeePublic is still active: https://www.teepublic.com/user/bernie_mireault I sourced the Jam motion comic from this WayBack machine link. It recalls the CO2 comics page, which was a Comico reboot, i think. https://web.archive.org/web/20180428010931/http://www.co2comics.com/pages/co2_bem_work.html Check out Bernies YouTube @berniemireault9741 For our YouTube Video Playlist CLICK HERE!!! One of the very first DC Comics characters of the Golden Age, THE SANDMAN - aka Wesley Dodds - fought crime and injustice in 1930s New York City armed with nothing but his wits, a gasmask, and a gun that fired nonlethal sleeping gas. Decades later, the first issue of Neil Gaiman's legendary "Sandman" series would reintroduce the world to Wesley Dodds, now explaining that his motivations and equipment were inspired by Dream himself. The Sandman spinoff series SANDMAN MYSTERY THEATRE from DC's Vertigo Comics imprint would run for an impressive 70 issues from 1993-1999, spearheaded by writer Matt Wagner and a revolving door of superstar guest-artists. The first half of this incredible run is currently in print as "Sandman Mystery Theatre Compendium One" - please buy it and let DC know you'd like them to finish off the series with Compendium Two! A fount of superlative editorial skill and knowledge, you may know Diana Schutz from her 25 years at Dark Horse Comics, where she oversaw such game-changing series as Frank Miller's Sin City, Mike Mignola's Hellboy, Stan Sakai's Usagi Yojimbo, Paul Chadwick's Concrete, and Matt Wagner's Grendel, to name but a few. Of course, we rewind all the way back to the beginning, where Diana started her comics career at a Canadian shop earnestly titled The ComicShop. Diana then created a comicsw newsletter called the Telegraph Wire and contributed to various fanzines and conventions, before she was hired at Marvel for a short stint. Then, it was on to Comico, during that imprint's heyday, and ultimately Dark Horse. What a career, and we barely scratch the surface! You can find and follow Diana on Facebook.___________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts.
