Last time we covered Matt Wagner's antihero Grendel, we did a chronological readthrough of the Hunter Rose stories, starting with material from the mid-1980s collected as Devil By the Deed and then skipping ahead to miniseries from 1998, 2002, and 2007. Now we're going back to 1986 (and the future…which is probably our present…but looks like the past…with flying cars) to read the first actual Grendel ongoing series from Comico (although we'll be looking at a two-issue miniseries from 1999 first). What happens when superhero comics get weird—like, really weird? On this episode of "Unsung Ink," we explore the world of Sam Kieth, a creator who bent anatomy, tone, and storytelling into something wholly his own. We dig into Kieth's early days in comics, from his inking work on Mage with Matt Wagner to his memorable contributions to The Sandman alongside Neil Gaiman. From there, we discuss his underrated run on Marvel Comics Presents with Peter David—work that helped define his elastic, expressive style. Of course, no conversation about Kieth is complete without diving into his creator-owned projects, including The Maxx, Zero Girl, and Four Women—books that blended psychological depth and surrealism in ways that still feel ahead of their time. Following his passing on March 15 at the age of 63, we take a moment to reflect on Sam Kieth's legacy—a true original, and a voice in comics that can't be replicated. Rest in peace.

In the final issue of Devils Choices we see the end of this epic tale of Grendels. Goran speeds his way past the villagers of Agram amidst a hail of bombs. This is Part One of a three-part deep dive with comics legend Diana Schutz, whose editorial fingerprints are all over modern comics history. From her influential years at Dark Horse to her early work during the Comico era and beyond...We start at the beginning: Diana's first exposure to comics through Supergirl and her love for the clean, expressive style of 1960s comic art. That passion never faded—it evolved. She walks us through the meticulous process of restoring a classic Lois Lane cover, explaining how comics restoration has grown into a serious craft and industry of its own.From there, we explore her current work translating a graphic novel by Brazilian artist Ricardo Leche for a new high-end comics art publisher, and she breaks down the real art of translatio. Why cultural nuance matters, and why having the right English-language voice is essential to preserving tone and intent. We also rewind to the early '80s, when Diana launched The Telegraph Wire, a 32-page bi-monthly comics magazine that began as a retailer newsletter and became a proving ground for her editorial skills. She talks about learning graphic design on the fly, selling ads, interviewing creators, and building something from scratch in a pre-internet comics landscape. It's a vivid look at a smaller, more intimate industry, one where relationships mattered and information wasn't instantly searchable. Along the way, Diana reflects on working at Comics & Comix, getting recruited by Kim Thompson to write for Amazing Heroes, connecting with Matt Wagner, and navigating an industry that had very few women in visible roles at the time. She shares memories of mentors like Trina Robbins, editors like Maggie Thompson and contemproraries like Karen Berger, and even her wild experience serving as Tom Baker's minder at a Chicago Doctor Who convention, complete with behind-the-scenes fandom chaos. This first chapter of our conversation is about origins, craft, and survival in a young comics industry that was still figuring itself out. And it sets the stage for much more to come.

We all crave a good meal. The challenge is savoring it once it's placed before you. Kelley Jones and Matt Wagner have wickedly, and delightfully, discovered a way to make Bram Stoker's Dracula not one good dish, but three...and possibly four and five. For the last several years, they've transformed the classic vampire novel into a feast impossible to gobble down in one sitting. By taking throwaway sentences in the book and building two graphic novels out of them (Dracula Book I: The Impaler, Dracula Book II: The Brides), they've miraculously extended their love affair with Vlad, and ours in the process as well. He created him at the behest of DC, who saw it as likely to be more commercially successful than the Fourth World and cancelled New Gods and Forever People to facilitate work on the new title. According to Evanier, Kirby had no interest in horror comics, but created Mark Etrigan in response to DC's demand for a horror character. Following this, John Byrne's Blood of the Demon lasted 17 issues, and ignored much of the continuity that took place after Kirby's initial run. While his first monthly comic book series was short-lived, and his second was canceled after five years, Etrigan remains a popular supporting character with occasional additional miniseries.
