This is a repeat of episode #12.In this episode of NeedleXChange I interview John Thomas Paradiso.John Thomas Paradiso is a Washington-based artist who has been exploring the intimacy of gay culture through needlework for over 30 years.Using hand embroidered quilting techniques, working on surfaces including leather and suede, and using traditional materials like doilies to mask the graphic parts of his subjects, John's work treads the line between pornography and personal portraiture. The News consists of the Boston Common incident, a sinclair dinosaur being stolen, and two guys holding an exotic animal photoshoot in a mall parking garage.
It won't surprise you know that owning an exotic cat like a lion or tiger is illegal in B.C.-- it is in most places, and for good reason. Exotic large cat ownership has led to many preventable tragedies. But there is a middle ground of cat, of breeds much bigger than domestic cats but smaller than cheetah and other big cats, that has remained largely unregulated. Until now. Host Caryn Ceolin is speaking with Michelle Cyca, the conservation and fellowships bureau chief for The Narwal, who's been covering the issue, to discuss why the BC government is doing this, who it will affect, and what it means for those cats already raised in captivity. Brian Gilroy runs Wildlife Partners, the largest exotic animal breeding operation in North America and a Cape buffalo herd that didn't exist in private hands a decade ago. He's also hunted Dall sheep in remote Alaska, muskox on Nunivak Island, and elk in New Mexico. This episode is a reality check on how the hunting industry actually works and why the free-range vs. high-fence moral war is mostly mythology from Brian's perspective.Texas is now on South Africa's radar as a direct competitor. Same animals, same large high-fence model, no 13-hour flight, five-star lodges, and populations of kudu, Cape buffalo, sable, and ibex growing every year. Brian explains the economics of exotic breeding as a tax strategy (why a self-reproducing kudu cow beats a tractor), why CWD has made native cervid breeding almost impossible, why put-and-take hunting is a dead model, and what a Wyoming or New Mexico application really costs over a lifetime. The episode closes with Brian's Alaska sheep story... the outfitter who knew every animal, flew him to the sheep, and pointed him at it. The honest question: why is that different from hunting 15,000 acres in Texas?Texas vs. South Africa — why SA should be genuinely worriedCape buffalo in TexasKudu, sable, red deer: population growth and what hunts will cost in five yearsWhy CWD killed native cervid breeding and exotics filled the gapExotic breeding as a business — 100% depreciation on an animal that reproduces itselfThe real cost of a sheep draw, a BC Dall sheep, or a New Mexico applicationThe Alaska sheep story and why free range is less pure than most hunters believeGuest: Brian Gilroy — CEO, Wildlife Partners. "Getting your hands dirty and embracing real-world experiences is the best way to grow—failure is just information that makes you better." Episode Summary In this episode, we sit down with Patrick Diedrich, the content director for Recoil Off Grid and a true outdoors and survival enthusiast. We chop it up about everything from homesteading inspiration and turning failures into learning opportunities, to behind-the-scenes stories from big events like Can-con, Amazonian adventures, and the quirkiest things we've eaten (including my encounter with balut!). We also weigh in on some hot 2A news, the ongoing cost-of-living debate, and our takes on DEI in the workplace. Plus, we tackle listener questions and debate the best places in the U.S. to homestead (tornadoes, ticks, and all). Call to Action 1. Subscribe and leave us a comment on Apple or Spotify 2. Support their cause at saf.org Key Takeaways Real-world experience and embracing failure are essential to mastering survival and preparedness. The gun community can learn a lot from discussing both our successes and shortcomings. The Can-con event featured not just guns, but off-grid skills like field dressing and chicken processing—sometimes requiring last-minute improvisation! Laws and regulations may influence firearm sales, but cultural and market forces play a huge part. Survival doesn't have to mean “hardcore only”—don't ignore modern tools and comforts when they make sense. DEI policies, hiring practices, and accountability in leadership sparked some spirited debate. The best place to homestead isn't just about price—natural disasters and local culture matter, too. Exotic foods like freshwater stingray and balut make for wild stories and lasting bonds! Police in Springs have confiscated two Nile crocodiles that were allegedly being kept illegally at a residential property for more than two years. The reptiles, measuring 1.48 metres and 1.7 metres long, were discovered during a raid on Monday led by the Tshwane K9 Unit, Gauteng Department of Environment, the Vereeniging Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit, the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital and the Springs SPCA. Authorities say they received information that crocodiles and tortoises were being kept on the property without the required permits. Armed with a search warrant from the Springs Magistrate’s Court, officers arrived at the home around 10am, where the owner was reportedly not present. A company manager allegedly allowed police onto the property. Inside the yard, officials found the crocodiles confined in a black steel enclosure measuring roughly 5.6 metres by 1.8 metres, with only a small blue splash pool inside. No tortoises were found during the search. The crocodiles were removed and transported to the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital for medical checks and further care. Police have since opened a criminal case for the alleged contravention of the National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act, which regulates the keeping of protected or threatened wildlife species without permits. Jody K. Jeane of Leesville was arrested after submitting a 12-pound largemouth bass to a local “lunker” program, which rewards anglers who catch fish over 10 pounds with a free replica mount. To qualify, participants must truthfully report where the fish was caught and release it back into the same body of water. Jeane claimed he caught the fish at Toledo Bend Reservoir. But wildlife agents had already seen him earlier that day at a different location—Vernon Lake—where he proudly showed off the same fish. Distinct markings on the bass, along with social media photos, helped confirm the fish's true origin. Authorities say Jeane later admitted to falsifying the information. He now faces charges of attempted theft and forgery, which could carry a penalty of up to 10 years in prison. Officials say the program is designed to promote conservation and highlight trophy fishing opportunities, not to be exploited. The incident has stirred local attention, especially after a second person reportedly tried to submit the same fish weeks later. Wildlife authorities emphasize that honesty is essential to keeping such programs fair and effective. Previously, applicants only needed to live in Idaho for six months to qualify. Under the new law, that requirement increases to five years of consecutive residency. The change takes effect July 1. Lawmakers say the update targets people who briefly moved to Idaho, bought a lifetime license at a lower resident cost, and then moved away—while still benefiting from resident status in future hunting tag drawings. State Representative James Petzke, who introduced the bill, said the goal is to ensure these licenses go to people who genuinely commit to living in the state. The licenses, which can cost several hundred to over a thousand dollars depending on age, allow hunters and anglers to remain in the resident pool for tag draws, even if they later leave Idaho. That made them especially appealing to nonresidents looking for long-term advantages. Groups like the Idaho Wildlife Federation supported the change, noting concerns from residents about so-called “loophole” use—sometimes involving remote workers or hunting influencers temporarily relocating. While officials haven't provided exact numbers of misuse, thousands of lifetime licenses have been issued in recent years. Supporters argue the new five-year rule better reflects the program's intent: rewarding long-term residents, not short-term opportunists. Idaho now has one of the strictest residency requirements in the country for lifetime sporting licenses—second only to Wyoming. Sample of state residency requirements (typically consecutive): 10 years: Wyoming 5 years: Idaho 1.5 years: Mississippi 1 year: Arkansas, Kansas, Minnesota, New York, Tennessee 6 months: Arizona, California, Texas 30 days: West Virginia Valid driver's license: Georgia Officials say the new law is meant to preserve fairness and maintain public trust in a program designed for committed residents.
