We return to Wildside Exotic Rescue in Herefordshire, where owner Lindsay Mckenna now cares for 11 pumas, a lynx, a serval and many other animals which were exotic captives needing new and better homes. Our 4 guests describe their own sightings of pumas wild in Britain, and compare them to the pumas at Wildside...   Jenny near Bath watched a puma exploring her garden at 6.30am in 2023 before it loped off into the adjacent wood. Tracey re-lives her close encounter with a grey-tone puma in Chile, and prompts discussion on pumas avoiding people even when close by. John Bilney explains how he sets up trail cams at woodland edges in the south Cotswolds, after he confronted two pumas on a cycle to work one morning.Jon from Carmarthen recounts the hissing puma in front of his car as it cornered a bend in south-west Wales, experienced just 5 days before the podcast recording.  The guests chat with Lindsay about the challenges of caring for pumas at Wildside, as we hear the puma sounds in the background as they feed on portions of locally culled fallow deer. Rick offered the pumas their first taste of boiled eggs…Website for Wildside Exotic Rescue, where we recorded this episode. Note the cottages for hire, the Open Days, and the Donations pages, as ways of supporting Wildside. https://www.wildsideexoticrescue.co.uk/ Words of the week:   coalition of cats 28 February 2026

We're talking all about Survivor's 50th Season Premiere because I got invited to be a part of a Q&A panel for the show tonight with former stars of Survivor! Guess being on Fox's The Floor finally paid off, eh? Huge thanks to Matt Bischoff and Little Miami Brewing for putting this together. I brought in Lucky, as he's the biggest Survivor fan that I know; we talked about the show, we talked a little strategy, but we REALLY talked about all kinds of fun international fruits that we tried here. Turns out, we should learn a little more about picking ripe fruit before the show starts! Along the way, we get off on some delightful tangents leading into me giving one of my classic passionate speeches about media criticism framed around great games and movies like Red Dead Redemption 2, and the original Ninja Turtles franchise. I can't stop looking at my dog Morison, who is a DEAD RINGER for Master Splinter, and saying "All fathers care for their sons." Anyway, it's another fun one from us, it's silly, and we tried a lot of fruit. "This is the wettest the podcast has ever been, and you can quote me on that" - Mark Borison

Genetic resilience and the dynamics of inbreeding and diversity in dairy breeding. Dr. Maltecca (6:43)The main issues in managing genetic diversity in dairy cattle include inbreeding depression and continuing selection without exhausting the available variability in the population. These are difficult to investigate in a breeding population, as there is not a model algorithm where there is the luxury of designing an experiment. Dairy cattle closely resemble one another, so it is difficult to distinguish between the effect of selection from the effect of drift and the effect of deleterious mutation accumulation in the population. Researchers find proxies to estimate inbreeding and inbreeding depression because we don't have good estimates of dominance effects.Identifying genetic diversity within indigenous and highly commercialized breeds for improved performance and future preservation. Dr. Huson (12:24)Dr. Huson covered four steps of thinking about genetic diversity in cattle: characterization of the genetic diversity, biological understanding of why we should preserve diversity, utilizing our understanding of diversity in breeding programs, and preserving and reassessing diversity over time. Harnessing indigenous African breeds for sustainable dairy production: Opportunities for crossbreeding to accelerate genetic improvement. Dr. Mapholi (16:52)Dr. Mapholi emphasized the importance of tick and disease resistance for the sustainability of the African dairy industry. The indigenous African breeds had been overlooked due to small frame size and the perception they were not suitable for commercial farming, but they have excellent tick and disease resistance. Exotic breeds from the US and Europe struggled with the harsh environment. Crossbreeding indigenous and exotic breeds is allowing for simultaneous improvement in milk production and disease resistance. Genomics is particularly helpful to identify the best candidate breeds for crossing.Genomic- versus pedigree-based inbreeding: 2 sides of the same coin. Dr. Macciotta (24:19)It was thought that genomic selection would help in slowing the increase of inbreeding because we were looking at the DNA of the animal, not their pedigree. However, the traditional top animals were the population from which genomic selection began, and genomic selection shortens generation interval, so inbreeding continues to increase at a faster rate. Genomics offer new tools for investigating inbreeding, but there are 10-15 options to calculate inbreeding, all of which could provide a different answer. With pedigree selection, there is only one measurement of inbreeding. We are still investigating the best method for calculating inbreeding using genomic tools.Managing genetic diversity: Strategies for sustainable livestock improvement. Dr. Baes (27:53)Genomic selection has increased the speed at which animals become more related. There are negative implications of inbreeding, but today, the genetic and economic gains achieved through the current intense directional selection still far outweigh the inbreeding issues. No one knows where the edge of the cliff is, however. Dr. Baes envisions an international system one day where academia, AI companies, and producers all work together to understand and manage genetic diversity in livestock. The panelists discuss key takeaways they got from the other speakers' presentations and give perspectives on the topic of genetic diversity for their particular country and field of study. This podcast discusses domestic violence. Sit this one out if you need to Many of us are enraged, shocked, and paralysed by the unfolding information from the JE files. Many of us are also dismayed at the continuing epidemic of domestic violence and murder-by-partner. What do we do? How can we help change things? We can learn how to be an ally in our own communities and circles better. Outrage and sadness must be used as springboards for action, I truly believe it. I'm joined by counsellor and author Patricia Gordon Stevens to talk about domestic and partner violence — a subject too often minimised, despite affecting 25% of women in some of the world's wealthiest countries. We explore why silence and discomfort only deepen the harm, and why education, community, and care matter so deeply. In this conversation, we cover:Why the moment a woman chooses to leave is often the most dangerous timeHow coercive control can appear long before physical violence doesThe subtle red flags friends, families, and colleagues can look forHow to ask caring, non-judgmental questions that keep the connection openWhy Patricia chose fiction (Madness in Memphis) to build empathy that leads to actionThe role men can play in calling out harmful behaviour and changing culture locallyThis episode is confronting, but it's also hopeful. Change doesn't start with grand gestures — it starts with noticing, staying connected, and showing up for the women in our lives.I hope you find it useful and helpful as I did, Alexx, your host. Concluding our “New Year, More Me” theme, we are invited to ponder from a 3rd angle:What if better health were not an “added” thing to do, but a more strategic approach to the way we do it?”This week, I am chatting with Dr John La Puma, a medical doctor and trained chef, about the “Indoor Epidemic”, a topic he is bringing to life through his upcoming 8th book.John shares why most of us are indoors for about 93% of our time, and how repurposing just two to five hours a week of the time you already spend outside can shift sleep, stress, mood, focus and even appetite signals. Now, most of us ‘know' that lots of indoor time and artificially lit environments are bad for our health, or we've seen the alarming stats on a reel or research quote, but the action and change part? That's often harder and this show is here to change that. We cover simple ideas you can try right away and break down a daily, monthly, and annual framework to achieve incredible health results. The way we use our outdoor time more strategically will show us gains in sleep quality, focus, blood pressure and inflammation. If you feel tired, wired, or stuck on screens, this episode is a warm nudge to change up your outdoor time for the better and feel more like you.Pre-order John's new book - I've loved it. So easy and extremely empowering for anyone who finds the habits you ‘know' are better, but yet you can't quite seem to get things going. If you want more brain space and less pressure in your day, this Low Tox Life episode is for you.I am joined by author Jodi Wilson, who wrote her new book “A Brain That Breathes” after years of writing, parenting, and pushing through burnout. Jodi noticed something big - modern life asks too much from our brains. We are always reachable, always scrolling, and always deciding. No wonder we feel foggy, edgy, and done.Jodi shares a powerful idea: we do not always need more tools or more “self-care and it definitely does not need to ‘cost us more' to practise it.” We often need subtraction. She calls it breathing space - small moments of downtime that help your nervous system settle and help your brain declutter. You will hear about “soft fascination,” a science-backed reset that happens when your attention is gently held by simple things - a walk without headphones, the ocean, trees, clouds, shower water, or bubbles in the sink. In these moments, your brain gets space to sort thoughts, ease stress, and untangle stuck ideas. Jodi also shares easy ways to protect your mornings, create a calmer evening routine, and use a deep sigh as a fast reset. This is not about fixing yourself. It is about coming home to what you need today - and choosing what is enough.I hope you love it as much as I love that this is out in the world for you, Alexx Stuart, your host xFancy a few more podcasts we've done over the years, related to this one?Show #367 Burn Out and Powering Life Differently with Dr Neha SangwanShow #390 Somatics: How to Make your Journey Real and True with Irene Lyon, MSc.Show #405 It's not you, it's your nervous system: How to tell the difference with Jessica MaguireShow #464. The ram was officially scored a 194. The 10.5-year-old ram weighed 264 pounds off the hoof. The previous state record was 186 3/8 and was held by David Suda of Fargo. The world record was shot in South Dakota in 2018 by Clayton Miller, scoring 209 1/8. Deni Lynn Draper, a part-time National Guard pilot, admitted no contest to a criminal trespassing charge tied to a May 2025 incident in Sweet Grass County. Prosecutors say Draper and two other servicemen landed a Black Hawk helicopter on a private ranch to gather shed elk antlers. Draper was fined $500, the maximum penalty for the misdemeanor, and his sentencing was deferred for six months. If he avoids further legal trouble, the charge could be cleared from his record. The judge said Draper was held to a higher standard because of his military service. As part of the agreement, Draper also gave up any claim to the antlers, which were seized by state wildlife officials and will be returned to the landowner. The other two servicemen involved have pleaded not guilty and still face criminal trespassing charges, with court hearings scheduled later this month. The Montana National Guard confirmed it conducted a separate internal investigation into the incident. Guard leaders say policies have since been updated to strictly ban antler collecting on any land using military resources. Officials emphasized that while the court case addresses trespassing, additional consequences could still come through military channels, reinforcing that misuse of government equipment will not be tolerated. This has a real shot at being the most unique wildlife conservation stories that we have in North American history. The ring-necked pheasant, a commonly hunted and celebrated bird, a bird that has it's own conservation organization, and a bird that is not native to the Americas. In most instance, when we hear or see the term "nonnative wildlife" it's tied to a negative outcome. However, pheasants have not only forged a path to being fully adopted into our wild landscapes with open arms, but they have also led the charge to several other positive outcomes for wildlife and wild habitats. They are without a doubt our most beloved exotic game bird.
