Is the opposite of depression happiness and the opposite of anxiety just calm? Some researchers have actually played with the idea that the opposite of depression and anxiety might just be... play. It's an interesting idea considering play and depression are inversely related, people who play more report a stronger internal locus of control (the sense that they have some agency over their lives), and when people engage in play, self-reported depression decreases. We'll dig into this more as we look more at the neuroscience of play and how it hits the dopamine system directly and promotes BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or what Henry calls Miracle-Gro for the brain), which supports the growth and survival of new neurons. Expect to come away with some inspiration and motivation to return some play into your life. As play researcher Dr. Brian Sutton-Smith noted "For decades there has been this assumption that children played and adults didn't. That's rubbish." Note: This is an encore episode, originally aired during Joy Lab's Element of Fun. It's replaying here during the month of Re-Creation because it grounds the science of play in some of the best research available — and because if you haven't heard it, now is exactly the right time. About: The Joy Lab Podcast is an Ambie-nominated podcast that blends science and soul to help you cope better with stress, anxiety, and depression. It's hosted by integrative psychiatrist Dr. Henry Emmons and holistic mental health researcher Dr. Aimee Prasek. The podcast is best paired with the Joy Lab App. Bonus: spread some joy and keep this podcast ad-free by donating (Joy Lab is powered by the nonprofit Pathways North and your donations are tax-deductible). FAQ Q: Is there actually science behind play being good for mental health, or is that just feel-good advice? A: The science is substantial! This episode explores highlights from neuroscience to epidemiological findings that support play as a real tool to improve mild to moderate mental health issues. Q: I'm depressed and have no motivation to do anything...can play actually help? A: Research shows that when people engage in play, self-reported depression decreases and a sense of agency increases. This episode explains the physiological mechanisms (dopamine, BDNF) and makes the case for why play is a legitimate mental health tool, not a luxury. With that said, it is essential to pair adjunctive strategies like play with care from your doctor or a mental health professional. Key moments: [00:00] Aimee introduces the encore: why this episode was chosen for Re-Creation month — it grounds the science of play [01:30] Dr. Brian Sutton-Smith: "The opposite of play is not work — the opposite of play is depression." [02:00] Play and depression are inversely correlated; Play and internal locus of control: playing more is associated with stronger sense of agency over your life [03:00] Weak internal locus of control is associated with depression — and play builds the opposite; When people engage in play, self-reported depression decreases — whether depression came first or play loss came first [04:00] Play can be used as a treatment tool for depression — not a replacement for other care, but a real contributor [05:00] Physiological mechanisms: play hits the dopamine system — loss of pleasure (anhedonia) is one of the two key criteria Henry looks for in depression; Play boosts creativity channels in the brain, tones down the stress/autonomic nervous system, helps release pent-up negative emotions; Most importantly: play grows our sense of connection — because we almost always play with others [07:00] Giant kangaroo rats: even solitary mammals have social neighborhoods and share resources — they aren't truly solitary; Humans have bought into the lone-wolf, self-made, solitary-BS story — which is actually bad for survival [08:30] When we don't have playmates and don't play, emotional health suffers — overwork alone without play is a recipe for depression and anxiety [10:00] Neurogenesis: the brain makes new cells throughout life, even in the last weeks of terminal illness; New brain cells need to branch out and connect with other cells or they wither and die — a powerful analogy for humans [11:30] BDNF: brain-derived neurotrophic factor — Henry's "Miracle-Gro for the brain" — facilitates this growth [12:00] Key factors that promote BDNF: diet (bright colors, omega-3s, not too many calories); moderate aerobic exercise [13:00] Enriched environment: in rats — a maze challenge, toys to play with, and playmates; not so different for humans [14:00] Social connection: even just another rat in the cage makes a difference [14:30] Age matters — but here's the twist: old rats who got to play with other old rats showed more BDNF and neurogenesis than young rats who exercised vigorously, ate perfectly, and did everything "right" [15:30] Social play overrides age — that is remarkable, and it counters all the "work harder, go faster" messaging [16:00] Growing research on work and wellbeing: many people in the US overwork without increased productivity or measurable benefit to anyone [16:30] People are happiest on federal holidays — including retirees who don't work; federal holidays create more chances to be with others, in public spaces, not working [21:00] The Right to Be Lazy — Paul Lafargue's old essay on our dis-ease with rest; This is not a new problem — thousands of years old — and the goal this month is some unproductive, nourishing progress [22:30] Legitimate structural reasons why play is hard: overwork to survive is a public health crisis — and that needs policy solutions [23:00] But a big part of dismissing play is also belief: it's a luxury, it's immature, we need to go it alone [24:00] Closing wisdom from Dr. Brian Sutton-Smith: "For decades there has been this assumption that children played and adults didn't. That's rubbish." If you enjoyed this episode, please rate and review us wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts! From your 20s to your 60s, the priorities change—but the basic job doesn't. Don and Tom walk through emergency savings, Roth IRAs, 401(k) matches, rebalancing, retirement planning, Social Security, Medicare, and estate planning, decade by decade. Then Mary calls with a smart Roth-conversion puzzle. They weigh whose IRA to convert, how much to move without wasting a low tax bracket, the age-59½ penalty, and why a household's accounts should be managed as one portfolio—even when the spouses have very different tolerances for risk. Finally: whether retirees still need emergency cash, how much umbrella insurance is enough, when a family office begins to make sense, and three near-identical retirement portfolios from a listener in Wagner, South Dakota—whose hometown briefly steals the show.00:25 Tom's brassy choice01:36 Financial priorities, decade by decade02:58 Start early with a Roth IRA04:02 Your 30s: emergency cash and the 401(k) match06:02 Your 40s: fixed obligations and retirement planning09:13 Your 50s: risk, HSAs, and getting on track10:45 Your 60s: Social Security, Medicare, and estate planning14:48 Roth conversions and household asset allocation24:12 Emergency funds in retirement27:01 Umbrella coverage and family offices30:16 Three retirement portfolios from WagnerQuestions? The Flying Dutchman, a German Romantic Opera by Richard Wagner, tells the haunting tale of a brig captained by Daland who seeks refuge from a storm in a Norwegian fjord, only to encounter the legendary phantom ship of the Flying Dutchman. This timeless story explores themes of fate, redemption, and the supernatural, resonating with audiences through its deep emotional currents and the struggle between human desires and the inexorable forces of destiny. The opera's rich character dynamics, particularly between Daland and his daughter Senta, highlight the enduring complexity of love and sacrifice. Wagner's masterful composition elevates this narrative, making it a captivating experience that continues to evoke wonder and reflection.

Conductor Alexander Briger has led orchestras all over the world. But his niche occupation is not the only fascinating thing about him. Alex's family history is wild.Alexander Briger has stood in front of musicians all over the world, summoning a gigantic, beautiful noise from them.Classical music was a huge part of Alex's story growing up.He is the nephew of the famous conductor, the late Sir Charles Mackerras; and descended from the so-called "father of Australian music", Isaac Nathan.Another branch of Alex's family tree astonishingly connects him to the man who murdered Rasputin.Rasputin was a Russian peasant and mystic, whose abilities as a faith healer drew him into the inner circle of the Russian Tzars.Fearing his destructive grip on the monarchy, a posse of aristocrats led by Alex's ancestor, Prince Felix Yusupov, drew Rasputin into a trap, luring him to his death in a Saint Petersburg basement in 1916.In recent years, Alex was invited to Russia to conduct a modern opera, coincidentally called and about Rasputin, in a full circle moment.Alex is back in Australia right now as the chief conductor and artistic director of the Australian World Orchestra, the only ensemble of its kind in the world. The Australian World Orchestra is playing in Melbourne on 19 August and in Sydney on 20 August. You can find out more about the orchestra and its performances online. This episode of Conversations was produced by Meggie Morris. Ça me paraît crédible.

Criminal MischiefEpisode 3: The Pike County Massacre — Judgment Day After nearly a decade of investigation, courtroom battles, and shocking family betrayals, the Pike County Massacre finally reaches its conclusion. In the final chapter of Carolyn Ossorio's exhaustive investigation into one of the most disturbing family murder conspiracies in American history, the Wagners begin turning on one another. Plea agreements are negotiated behind closed doors. Testimony once thought impossible becomes the prosecution's most devastating weapon. Parents testify against children. Sons testify against mothers. The carefully constructed image of an ordinary Ohio farming family collapses under the weight of its own lies. Carolyn follows every major development—from the strategic deals that unraveled the Wagner family's defense, through the emotional courtroom testimony that revealed how eight members of the Rhoden family were systematically hunted and executed, to the convictions and sentences that finally brought a measure of justice to Pike County. But this episode isn't simply about guilty verdicts. It's about obsession disguised as love, control masquerading as family loyalty, and the devastating consequences of a belief that one family had the right to decide another family's future. Carolyn also explores the lingering questions that remain, the emotional scars carried by the survivors, and why the Pike County Massacre continues to haunt investigators, prosecutors, and the community that lived through one of the largest homicide investigations in Ohio history. After weeks of exclusive interviews, meticulous reporting, and thousands of pages of court records, Criminal Mischief concludes its definitive examination of the Pike County Massacre. Justice may have finally arrived—but some wounds never truly heal. New episodes of Criminal Mischief are available wherever you listen to podcasts. We incomprehensible ones - how our thought branches in every direction, how willing we are to shed our bark, to grow, to change! In this episode, we discuss, among many other sections, important passages such as "What is Romanticism" - in which Nietzsche explains how he departed from the romantic pessimism of Wagner and Schopenhauer. He opposes the theater to music, fully breaking with his earlier views in Birth of Tragedy. Nietzsche also flips the script on some of his previous views regarding academics, and suggests that the scholarly specialist is a type of higher value than the so-called "man of letters", the master of nothing who represents himself as everything. Here, the hermit and the cynic speak, and Nietzsche spares no one his criticism. Episode art: The Tree of Life by Gustav Klimt

Join us for Episode 4245 of Day1 as we welcome the Rev. Dr. Kimberly Wagner, Assistant Professor of Preaching at Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey, preaching "Blessed Wrestling" from Genesis 32:22-31. As we mark the 10th Sunday after Pentecost, Dr. Wagner turns to Jacob's nighttime struggle at the river Jabbok, exploring how blessing and struggle are never mutually exclusive. Drawing on her scholarship in preaching after trauma, she offers a message of honest hope for anyone who has felt surrounded with nowhere safe to go.
Pull out your opera glasses because Anna Russell is here to poke some good natured fun at all things operatic. After realizing she didn't have the chops to be a true diva, Anna pivoted and merged her admirable singing voice with some sly and sharp parody of the art form. Through a series of albums and one-woman shows, Anna was a favorite of opera fans (at least ones with a sense of humor) from the 1940s through her retirement in the 1980s. Her major claim to fame was a very funny deconstruction of Wagner's the Ring. And what did Anna say to critics who said she had insulted a great piece of music. Just this: "I merely tell the story as accurately as possible and play the bits of music exactly as written. I can't help it if the story is absurd." As always find extra clips below and thanks for sharing our shows. Want more Anna Russell? Anna's main claim to fame was her fabulous take down of Wagner's Ring. First released in 1953, the routine remained a mainstay of her act for the rest of her career. https://youtu.be/Us6CrJzJlIc?si=Ftv-OfPJv8lt0UuB Here Anna parodies folk tunes on the wonderful Alistair Cooke show Omnibus. Dr. Beckett discusses the buzz around Keith Olbermann's T206 “Restored Die-Cut Wagner” being sold via Love of the Game (auction closing August 8), explaining how the card was historically altered and later skillfully rebuilt using authentic card material, raising debate over restoration vs. deceptive alteration and how graders should categorize such pieces. He argues the sale could be an inflection point in hobby “rules,” with newer, wealthier collectors valuing eye appeal, story, and provenance over strict originality—similar to shifts seen with Star Jordan vs. Fleer and BGS 9.5 vs. PSA 10 preferences. Beckett predicts the Wagner could exceed $2 million, notes prediction markets like Polymarket/Kalshi and their potential influence, and frames the episode as a broader discussion about changing guardrails in collecting. 00:43 Auction Buzz and Pedigree 01:47 How the Wagner Was Restored 03:19 Alteration vs Restoration Rules 04:48 Restoration History and Conservators 05:40 Why Restorers Stay Anonymous 07:04 The Wagner Club and New Money 08:35 Eye Appeal Changes Hobby Rules 11:19 Prediction Markets and Price Calls

They talk about New York's worsening conditions, Trump's announced Saudi nuclear deal and subsequent reversal, and a House-passed NDAA provision (Section 219) calling for deeper US-Israel military/intelligence integration, which they argue signals late-stage empire and foreign influence via AIPAC. They critique Trump's "golden age" claims, note rising yields and escalating Middle East and Ukraine-Russia risks, and comment on Trump family wealth. Maud Wagner, one of the country's first known female commercial tattoo artists, was born in Emporia, Kansas. She joined a sideshow act with her sister until a fateful meeting pushed her to pursue carnival stardom, inked from head to toe.
The Wagner discussion reaches its conclusion with one final twist: how should Honus Wagner's first name actually be pronounced? We examine historical audio, debate the evolution of names and language, and have some fun exploring one of the hobby's oldest pronunciation debates. Along the way, the panel reflects on who might ultimately buy the Franken-Wagner, what its long-term legacy could be, and why transparency remains the central theme of the entire conversation. We also wrap up Hobby Palooza, preview The National, and thank everyone who joined one of the most memorable Sports Cards Live discussions in recent memory.
The Franken-Wagner discussion continues with one of the hobby's biggest questions: should restoration remain hidden, or should it be openly disclosed and accepted? We examine whether transparent restoration could actually discourage deception, why this unique Wagner is unlike any other restored card, and how CGC arrived at its "Authentic Restored" designation. Along the way, we debate whether restored cards deserve a second life, whether this Wagner is better viewed as art than a traditional sports card, and whether this auction could influence the future of card conservation. This episode goes beyond one card and explores what honesty, provenance, and transparency could look like in the sports card hobby moving forward.

So here's the thing. I know I talk a lot about reading. It's pretty important to me. But all week I've been trying to prepare a different podcast, one NOT about the uncrackable justification for choice reading. But recently I heard from several teachers over in CHSE about thriving reading programs they had going, only to get shut down by folks who felt like reading in class was a waste of time. And then I kind of ended up in a rabbit hole, as I am wont to do. It's like researching the justification for choice reading became my guilty pleasure, sucking up all my time. I listened to audiobooks on my walks, pored over research roundups and articles at the coffee shop, hit up the hammock with my Penny Kittle, and stared and stared and stared at the growing evidence mounting in my endless Google doc of notes. The evidence is clear. The need for help for kids who don't read, don't like reading, and don't want to read is great. And yet STILL we are prioritizing reading snippets and drilling for tests to "improve" our readers' reading. I want you to have the information you need to fight. So here I am. Again. Despite my efforts to focus on something else this week. Let's dig deep. Water utilities are rich in data but often struggle to turn decades of information into decisions that improve daily operations. In this episode, Travis Wagner of Trinnex explains how utilities can connect fragmented information, preserve workforce knowledge, and introduce artificial intelligence without sacrificing accuracy or security. Most utilities already collect extensive records through plant-control systems known as SCADA, geographic information systems, maintenance programs, and financial software. The first step is not necessarily collecting more data, but identifying the utility's goals and making the existing information accessible across systems. That work is becoming more urgent as experienced operators retire and take decades of practical knowledge with them.Operations manuals, standard procedures, and historical records can help preserve some of that expertise when they are digitized and made easier for employees to search.Trinnex developed Raini as a utility-specific AI assistant that can answer questions about tasks such as maintaining a pump or backwashing a filter, while linking employees directly to the source document behind each response. The system is designed to acknowledge when it cannot find an answer, while human experts test its responses and utilities update outdated procedures that the technology brings to light.Wagner says the next generation of utility software could allow operators to request information, compare data, and generate dashboards through conversational tools, but progress should begin with clear governance, secure testing environments, and careful validation.Learn more about Trinnex. waterloop is a nonprofit news outlet.
The Franken-Wagner conversation continues as we dive even deeper into one of the hobby's most fascinating and polarizing collectibles. Al Crisafulli explains how Keith Olbermann came to own the card, why it disappeared from public view for decades, and how its provenance was ultimately confirmed. We also explore the card's reconstruction, the role of transparency, and whether this project was intended as deception—or as a public demonstration of what expert paper conservation could achieve. From there, the discussion turns philosophical. Could this card become a watershed moment for restoration in the hobby? Will collectors eventually view reconstructed cards differently? And what happens if this unique Wagner commands an extraordinary price at auction? Whether you see it as restoration, reconstruction, art, or hobby history, this conversation explores questions that collectors may be debating for years to come.
Criminal Mischief The Pike County Massacre – Episode Two: The House of Wagner For more than two years, investigators searched for the people responsible for one of the most shocking mass murders in modern American history. The evidence was painstakingly collected, hundreds of interviews were conducted, and countless theories—from drug cartels to family feuds—were examined. Yet as detectives slowly assembled the pieces, one family kept appearing at the center of the puzzle. The Wagners. In this second episode, Carolyn Ossorio follows the investigation as law enforcement begins narrowing its focus to a family that, from the outside, appeared hardworking, successful, and deeply devoted to one another. But behind that carefully maintained image was a rigid hierarchy led by Angela Wagner—a mother whose influence over her husband and sons has become one of the most unsettling aspects of the case. As investigators dug deeper, they uncovered a family dynamic defined by loyalty, control, and an unwavering belief that blood came before everything else. Prosecutors would ultimately argue that this culture of obedience helped lay the groundwork for an unimaginable crime. This episode explores the custody dispute involving Hanna Rhoden and Jake Wagner, the mounting evidence that began pointing investigators toward the Wagner family, and the painstaking detective work that transformed suspicion into one of the largest criminal investigations in Ohio history. We also examine how years of planning, digital evidence, forensic breakthroughs, and witness interviews gradually dismantled the appearance of an ordinary Appalachian family. As the circle tightens around the Wagners, one question begins to overshadow every other: Was this simply a custody battle that spiraled into violence—or had an entire family convinced themselves that murder was the only acceptable solution? In this episode of The President's Daily Brief: The battle for the Strait of Hormuz is entering a dangerous new chapter. We examine why the Trump administration has once again shifted its strategy against Iran—and what that tells us about where the war is headed. The remnants of Russia's Wagner mercenary force have reportedly traded the battlefield for the drug trade. We look at allegations that former Wagner fighters are operating a growing opioid empire in one of Africa's most lawless regions. The Trump administration launches a new campaign against the International Criminal Court, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio vowing to curb the tribunal's influence and shield Americans from its jurisdiction. In today's Back of the Brief, Congress moves to honor the late Senator Lindsey Graham by reviving one of his signature priorities: a sweeping new package of sanctions targeting Russia.
