My guest for today's episode is the brilliant Ros Poerwantoro - of Romud Ceramics. Growing up in Australia, after leaving school, Ros trained as an Interior Architect and was immersed in the corporate for nearly 15 years. As part of a meditation course she attended, as homework, the class was challenged to try something they had always wanted to do but had never done. Ros chose pottery and went to her first class. From there, she was hooked. Ros left the corporate world back in 2021 – with the intention of taking a career break for a couple of months. During this time her hobby of pottery became a business - and now 12 months into running Romud Ceramics she is not only creating her own pieces to sell but also running workshops and training courses from her gorgeous artists studio in Brighton. In this episode, Ros shares with us the decisions that led to leaving her corporate job to try something different. When most people think of ‘digital nomad' they think a laptop poolside or on the beach with a cocktail and 20 minutes of work a day. Probably followed up by a pool party in the sun and buckets of Moet! The reality is lots of work in very uncomfortable places. I have worked in nearly every different kind of place imaginable - coffee shops, hotels, restaurants, kerb sides, Air BnB's and on trains and planes! Sometimes you just have to suck it up and do it to get things done. There are both pro's and con's to being a digital nomad - and I have been lucky enough to experience this lifestyle first hand when I travelled 5000 miles across Europe in 2020 and 2021 - working, living and travelling in a VW Crafter camper van. In this episode, I share with you my take on the pro's and con's to this lifestyle - and what you need to consider if you're thinking of heading off into the sunset with your laptop under your arm... Pro #1 - Ultimate freedom and adventure Pro #2 - Experience a new culture Pro #3 - Live in the moment Con #1 - Lack of connection Con #2 - Blurred lines between work and play Con #3 - It can be more complicated and stressful I really hope you enjoy this episode. For this episode, I share with you my six top tips on how to set up a business. I'm now 10 years into my entrepreneurial journey, having set up and run four businesses from scratch. More people than ever are wanting to set up their own business – with an estimated 3 million employees in the UK stating they want to set up a business in 2022. In 2021, over 700,000 businesses were started, and post-pandemic that figure is estimated to continue to rise as more people are wanting to take control of their time, energy and focus and chase their dreams running their own business and to work for themselves. As idyllic as that sounds, a report by the Telegraph newspaper showed that over 20% of businesses fail within the first year, and even if your businesses survives the first 12 months, by year 5 around ½ of businesses have failed. However, it's not all doom and gloom and my goal today is to share with you the things I wish I'd known when I got started to make your journey into entrepreneurship as smooth and enjoyable as possible! Tip #1 - Find Your Passion Tip #2 - Know Your Market Tip #3 - Solve a Problem Tip #4 - Start Lean Tip #5 - Be A Planner Tip #6 - Find a Mentor Starting your own business can be exciting and challenging. While you'll undoubtedly encounter many obstacles and setbacks on your path to success, following these tips will help you start strong on your entrepreneurial journey. My guest for this episode is Mike Churchyard. Mike is an ex-police offer turned sports massage therapist. Mike had always wanted to run his own business, so facing retirement after a 30 year career in Sussex Police, he trained in sports massage therapy and in early 2020 was set to open the doors to his new clinic. One global pandemic and two years later, Mike is now able to reflect and appreciate how such a tough and challenging time was actually a blessing in disguise – and how it enabled him to grow his business at a pace that suited him. One of Mike's motivation to set up his own business in retirement was to create a lifestyle of freedom and adventure and he's done just that – splitting his time between Sussex and the Lake District – travelling between the two in his camper van, Tigger. Mike is a real advocate for trusting his intuition, going against the grain and creating a life and business that works for him. I really hope you love this episode. There has never been a better time to think about changing your job, career or even setting up a business. A 2021 poll of 4000 employees showed that over 60% of employees intended to make changes to their careers as a result of the pandemic. That's 3 in 5 people considering a change in what they are doing for work – an increase in over 10% from the previous year. Out of those 60%, the top reasons for individuals wanting a change is to pursue a career where you can work remotely, for career advancement and more flexibility, things that I know are all very important to me in my career. However, it's not always a simple as that – just to make a change and take action. Even if you're part of that 60% who are thinking about a career change, it's likely you've invested a ton of time and energy into your career so far and it's not easy to take your life in a different direction. More to the point, what direction should you take it in? In this episode, I walk you through the four steps to take to create a successful career change - how to evaluate where you are now, work out what you actually want, master your mindset and then create a plan to get there. My guest for this episode of Rebel Careers is the amazing Kelly Gentry. Kelly is a swimmer, coach, boat pilot, and water lover from California with 25+ years spent in and around the water. In her early-20's, while her friends were pursuing what society dictates as a ‘normal career', Kelly started to create her ‘rebel career, moving to Europe, securing a job as a Swim Guide for SwimTrek and settling near the beautiful city of Dubrovnik in Croatia. In this episode Kelly tells her story from studying Environmental Science at university because it felt like the sensible thing to do, to building a career as a Swim Guide which has led her all over the globe. This came to an abrupt halt when COVID hit in 2020 but she pivoted, making the difficult decision to move back to California and build her coaching business SwimSwell from her base overlooking San Francisco bay. I was so intrigued by her story and wanted to find out what drove her to go against the grain to focus on what truly makes her happy and how she escaped the rat race to pursue a career as a Swim Guide. Today, to kick off this very first series of the Rebel Career podcast, I'm going to share my rebel career story. For many years I struggled with feeling like I didn't ‘fit' into the traditional 9-5 career path, feeling like there must be something else out there for me, but unsure of what that was or what it looked like. This is the story of how I got off the beaten track and created my own rebel career – as an entrepreneur, adventurer and traveller. In this episode I want to share my whole career story with you, all the way back to 2012 when my entrepreneurial journey started. I'm talking about: How work experience whilst at university made me realise I didn't want a traditional 9-5 and I wanted to do something different The moment I realised I needed to take control of my career and set up my own business How I came up with the idea for my first business and got started How in 2019 I was the epitome of a ‘busy fool' – over-worked, over-whelmed and stressed out The mindset tools and strategies I've used over the past three years that have helped me create the success I've experienced (and the things I still do today to keep me on track!) How I created a business I could run 100% remotely and spent nine months travelling around Europe in a camper van How you can open yourself up to new opportunities and make 2022 the year you turn your ideas into reality Rebel Careers is all about helping you to dare to dream, think outside the box, gain clarity around the career and life you want to create for yourself and give you the confidence to pursue that vision.
