I love feeling that positive momentum when projects are underway and things are going well. This week has been a rollercoaster of emotions in several of my projects, does that happen to you? Sometimes it seems like everything is upside down, but suddenly, the pieces of the puzzle start to fit together and things begin to flow. I want to take this moment to talk about something that I'm passionate about: the world of interior design. Have you ever wondered what lies behind the lies and myths surrounding this fascinating field? I want to debunk some of the most common myths: 1. "White makes a space look larger": While light tones can create a sense of spaciousness, it's not exclusively white that achieves this. Lighting, space, and other elements also play a crucial role in the perception of a room's size. 2. "Interior design is only for wealthy people": Nothing could be further from the truth! Interior design is accessible for all budgets. Hiring a professional can even save money in the long run by avoiding costly mistakes. 3. "Large furniture makes a space look smaller": Actually, large furniture can provide scale and cohesion to a space, making it feel more cozy rather than overwhelming. 4. "Interior designers only care about aesthetics": False! Good interior design balances both aesthetics and functionality. It's crucial to design spaces that are visually appealing and practical for living or working. 5. "Minimalism means having empty, undecorated spaces": Minimalism is about simplifying and reducing clutter, but it can still include carefully selected decorative elements to create visual interest. 6. "Small spaces can never be luxurious": Wrong! Small spaces can be luxurious and sophisticated with clever design and high-quality materials. 7. "Interior design trends are eternal": Trends change over time. It's important to design spaces that reflect the individual's personality and style rather than blindly following trends. 8. "Interior design is just decorating": Not at all! Interior design involves much more than simply choosing furniture and wall colors. It includes space planning, material selection, lighting, and much more. 9. "Interior designers can transform any space quickly": While quick changes can be made, truly exceptional interior design requires time, planning, and careful execution. Thank you so much for tuning in to listen. Miriam Prada A bit about me... I am a Building Engineer and interior designer, specializing in high-end projects. She believes it is important to connect historic images with contemporary ones and says, “The old and new inform each other. You need to know both worlds.” Most importantly, it is how people wish to live and work in the space. When the architecture already exists, she asks, “What obstacles am I working around, what can I simplify, how can I make the whole thing flow better?” One of the most exciting parts of her work is when people ask her to think differently. This work feels like a constant journey to her which allows her to explore new projects and think differently. At 85 she intends to continue to work for as long as she can. Her approach to incorporating sustainability into projects is deeply immersed in biophilic design with an emphasis on creating healthy interior spaces that are grounded in occupant engagement through compelling storytelling. By creating spaces that strengthen the symbiotic relationship between humans and our environment, Becca designs for long-term resiliency and wellbeing.  She is a LEED & WELL AP, and Associate Interior Designer at SERA Architects. In this episode we discuss: What biophilic design is and how to apply it to a project What lead Becca to learning more about biophilic designHow she has applied the principles of biophilic design to a urban hospitality project“Refuge is the idea that if people or animals or living beings are protected at the back and slightly overhead, they will feel more protected. It is the reason why animals have their deans in caves. The next principle is prospect which is access to views. Back in the day, humans were drawn to prospect because they could see predators coming. It provides a sense of safety. If you combine refuge (protection around and above you) and prospect (with views) you get a space that is very comforting to people". -Becca DoboshTo listen to the show and read the show notes on tips for how to integrate biophilia into hospitality design. Follow us on instragram to stay in the loop on future episodes.Interested in being a guest or have a topic covered, contact Mile Long Trace. Today's guest is only 26 and already lived a thousand lives. In her early teens she swam competitively, and after school graduated as an Interior Architect. She's lived in Australia on a farm, as an au pair, in a bar, and mystery shopper. She lived in Milan as an English teacher, worked on a super yacht in the south of France and studied a PGCE in Liverpool. Lockdown has been a struggle for many, but it allowed Hannah the perfect amount of stillness to re-centre herself and focus on her mental health and wellbeing. It also gave her the opportunity to launch her own business “The Paint Lab” organising paint parties for beginners (something that I've participated in during lockdown and LOVED) with the PaintLab even featuring on a festival line-up this summer. You only have to take a quick peek at her instagram @thepaintlab__ to see how talented she is. Now, Hannah is living in London as Head of Art in school and is setting her sights on using art as a tool to help others struggling with their mental health. She might refer to herself as insatiable but I think we can all agree it's inspiring and wildly ambitious! It's safe to say she's been on a huge personal journey over the last 6 years and I cannot wait to absorb her wisdom. Welcome Hannah Williams! ***This week's episode is sponsored by Nonna Tonda**** I started using Nonna Tonda last year because I, like so many, really missed going to restaurants during lockdown. In order to minimize the viral spread in the built environment, designers across the world are exploring a vast array of strategies from space planning, to finishes to lighting. In today’s episode we are going to unpack UV lighting to understand the pros and cons of introducing it into mainstream built environments. UV has traditionally been used in health care applications such as surgical exam rooms to remove virus from surfaces. As designers explore how this technology translates to other market sectors we will unpack:Effectiveness of UV lighting as a viral treatmentSafety concerns with using UV in public spacesSafe ways UV lighting can be introduced into interior environmentsClients interest in UV lighting and predictions for technology advancement“At this the time there is not enough research and education to the public on the difference and effectiveness of UVA, UVB or UVC. The key is to really understand which nanometer range of UV the source is emitting.” - Jesse Smith“I think UV lighting strategies is a really important conversation to have with clients in light of everything that's going on in the world right now. However, I think the science needs to be stronger in terms of application. My concern is the ads for UV light that kill COVID. Even though the systems at play are so massively broken, doing something is a start. Design Your Life podcast E020 with Vince Frost in conversation with Andrei Dolnikov, Russian-Australian Interior Architect, Architectural Visualiser and Orthodox Hasidic Rabbi. Andrei Dolnikov came to Australia as an 11-year old Russian immigrant with nothing but his family, $2,000 and a Persian rug. After graduating art school in Australia, he made the pilgrimage to Israel where he spent six years living in Jerusalem studying to become an Orthodox-Hasidic Rabbi, rediscovering the spiritual roots that he had been denied while growing up in the Soviet Union. Now, Andrei is a visionary creative leader who specialises in bespoke, considered and memorable architectural images. He started his own business in his spare room in a small Sydney apartment, jokingly referred to as “Suite 9”, after working as a visualiser in Pittsburgh (USA). He has since guided Binyan – a now international studio with locations all over the world – to its place as a leader in the field. In this episode, Andrei reveals his story of discovering his spiritual roots, creating a business in a 2-bedroom apartment while studying full time, working as a practicing rabbi and caring for a wife and two kids. He shares how bringing together the “seemingly contradicting” threads of his life are what excites him most, and how he himself strives to break stereotypes by being a living contradiction: “I want to be the Hasidic *and* the hipster.” Stay tuned for the next Design Your Life episode featuring British advertising legend Sir John Hegarty! binyan.com.au frostcollective.com.au See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
