Ebola - what is it, and could it become a global pandemic similar to the likes of Covid? What is Ebola and why is this outbreak dangerous? It's a very severe viral illness that causes fever, vomiting, bleeding, and organ failure. Up to 50% of patients die. It's spread by contact with body fluids such as blood or saliva. This is a rare sub-type with no specific vaccine or treatment, unlike previous outbreaks of the more common Zaire strain. Why is Ebola a problem in Africa? Most outbreaks are in Central Africa as the virus comes from animals such as fruit bats found in tropical forests. Many of affected areas have poor healthcare, shortages of hospitals, health workers, and poor protective equipment. Political instability and conflict complicate dealing with outbreak. Community mistrust and traditional burial practices can spread Ebola, as bodies are still infectious. Could Ebola become a global pandemic like Covid? Should we be concerned? It's highly unlikely as Ebola is much less efficient at spreading. There are three key reasons for this: Ebola spreads by direct contact with body fluids, Covid spread though air and coughing – therefore it's more infectious. Covid can spread with no symptoms. Ebola can only spread when symptoms become apparent. People become very sick very quickly and do not move around, which limits spread. Basically, a global pandemic occurs when people move around/travel and spread the virus, and Ebola's severe symptoms limit this spread. A vaccine for this strain is probably about six months away. There's confidence from some that the hantavirus outbreak won't turn into another worldwide pandemic. Passengers are being evacuated and returning to home countries, including one New Zealander. Authorities say one of five French passengers developed symptoms flying to Paris, and will isolate until further notice. Otago University epidemiologist, Michael Baker, says person to person transmission is very unusual for this virus. "And when they're investigated, these are often people who are living in the same house or the same bedroom or are spending a lot of time together - it's not from casual contact." Chrystina Obleschuk, Director of Programs at the Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about their free Health Summit that takes place on June 3rd at the Mack Experience Center in Allentown, PA. The Summit will feature expert speakers and findings from their LGBTQ Health Needs Assessment Survey taken by thousands of participants in 2024 covering many aspects of health and well-being from mental health to basic needs for our community. To kick off the summit Keynote Speaker Tommy Walcott-Lee a queer public health scholar, educator and advocate will address bringing together LGBTQ health, human rights and global justice. Special featured speakers will include (ret) Admiral Rachel Levine, MD who has not only been a pioneer for health in the state of Pennsylvania as Secretary of Health and Physician General but also for the nation at large having served as the 17th Assistant Secretary for Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In addition Adrian Shanker founding Executive Director of Bradbury-Sullivan will speak who went on to serve in the Biden-Harris Administration as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health Policy and Senior Advisor on LGBTQI+ Health Equity at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and previously served as a member of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS. Adrian has also edited two anthologies “Bodies and Barriers: Queer Activists on Health” and “Crisis and Care: Queer Activist Responses to a Global Pandemic”. There will be panels as well with crucial information and guidance to assist LGBTQ orgs with policies, advocacy, grant writing and funding in these challenging times. Part 1 of 2: Our guest today is Oguzhan Atay, Co-founder & CEO of BillionToOne. BillionToOne is a precision diagnostics company that quantifies biology to create powerful molecular diagnostics. They work to improve disease detection by counting molecules with their proprietary molecular counting platform. They place patients at the forefront of everything they do and are currently applying their proprietary technology to non-invasive prenatal screening and liquid biopsy. Oguzhan holds a Ph.D. from Stanford in Systems Biology, where he implemented machine learning algorithms and mathematical models to solve specific problems in cellular biology and developed a data-driven mathematical framework to simplify the analysis of complex biological networks.
