The federal government has lifted the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency, and many Americans are eager to move on from the pandemic entirely. But, COVID-19 is unfortunately still here — and so is the threat of a future pandemic. Ed Yong, a science journalist at The Atlantic who wrote about the risk of a deadly pandemic in 2018 and later won a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting on COVID-19, warns that neglecting the pandemic only leaves us unable to address the problems that led to its devastating impacts in the first place. On the show today, Yong explains how the panic-neglect cycle keeps us vulnerable to COVID-19 flare-ups and new pandemics, why social solutions are just as important as medical ones when it comes to preventing the spread of disease, and why long COVID is misunderstood. Plus, what needs to change to make the United States better prepared for the inevitable next pandemic. In the News Fix: Many retailers (including in the luxury segment) are expecting a drop in sales, and some sellers are starting to limit free return options. These could be signs that consumer spending is finally tightening after the Federal Reserve’s relentless interest rate hikes. Plus, we'll talk about the benefits of buying secondhand. Later, a listener suggests fun emojis to brighten up a conversation on Slack. And, this week's answer to the Make Me Smart question comes from Kimberly's mermaid instructor, Jen Downey. Dr. Kat Lindley is a family physician and president of the Texas branch of the American Academy of Physicians and Surgeons. She was one of a few doctors using repurposed medications to treat COVID-19 patients early in the pandemic. We discuss how doctors lost their autonomy over the last two decades and how hospitals are financially incentivized to follow fixed protocols, instead of to do what's in the best interest of the patients.“If you do everything by the protocol, then the hospital hits all of those right numbers, all of those right checkboxes, so they get paid the most amount of money they can get paid,” Lindley says.During this pandemic, Lindley says she saw in America signs of the same totalitarianism she fled from in communist Yugoslavia.“The state makes you fear something really bad. And then they isolate you so you cannot discuss what's going on. And then they start telling [you], well, if you do this, I'll give you a little bit of that—until it gets to the point that you just can't do anything unless they give you permission,” Lindley says.We also discuss proposals for a global pandemic treaty and amendments to the international health regulations. “What the WHO [World Health Organization] would like to accomplish is something they call one health, one world. They would like to have global control over any future pandemics that happen,” Lindley says.Follow American Thought Leaders on social media:Twitter: https://twitter.com/AmThoughtLeaderTruth Social: https://truthsocial.com/@AmThoughtLeaderGettr: https://gettr.com/user/amthoughtleaderFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/AmericanThoughtLeadersGab: https://gab.com/AmThoughtLeaderTelegram: https://t.me/AmThoughtLeader

FBI Director Christopher Wray has said that the bureau believes Covid-19 most likely originated in a Chinese government-controlled lab."The FBI has for quite some time now assessed that the origins of the pandemic are most likely a potential lab incident," he told Fox News.It is the first public confirmation of the FBI's classified judgement of how the pandemic virus emerged. Many scientists point out there is no evidence that it leaked from a lab.And other US government agencies have drawn differing conclusions to the FBI's.Some of them have said - but with a low level of certainty - that the virus did not start in a lab but instead jumped from animals to humans. The White House has said there is no consensus across the US government on the origins.A joint China-World Health Organization (WHO) investigation in 2021 called the lab leak theory "extremely unlikely".However, the WHO investigation was deeply criticised and its director-general has since called for a new inquiry, saying: "All hypotheses remain open and require further study."Mr Wray's comments come a day after the US ambassador to China called for the country to "be more honest" about Covid's origins. In his interview on Tuesday, Mr Wray said China "has been doing its best to try to thwart and obfuscate" efforts to identify the source of the global pandemic. He said details of the agency's investigation were classified but the FBI had a team of experts focusing on the dangers of biological threats. In response, Beijing accused Washington of "political manipulation".Support the showSign Up For Exclusive Episodes At: https://reasonabletv.com/LIKE & SUBSCRIBE for new videos every day. https://www.youtube.com/c/NewsForReasonablePeople

In Episode 68,  Love Conquers Alz hosts, Susie Singer Carter and Don Priess have a fascinating conversation with  Dr. Buffy Lloyd-Krejci, one of the foremost authorities on infection prevention and control in nursing homes and long-term care facilities. Dr. Buffy (as she likes to be called) is a frequent contributor and interview source for national and trade press concerning infection prevention and control and mitigation. Dr Buffy is  also the  author of Broken: How the Global Pandemic uncovered a nursing home industry in need of repair and the heroic staff fighting for change. In BROKEN, Dr. Buffy Lloyd-Krejci exposes an industry in dire need of a massive policy overhaul. Her book chronicles her "boots on the ground" experience visiting 200 nursing homes across the country as the pandemic brought these deadly problems into stark relief. Through interviews with patients, healthcare workers, advocate groups, and regulatory agencies, she reveals the critical flaws in a system that was set up to fail—and her bold vision for change.Dr. Buffy  states that  "Our elderly loved ones deserve to live out their final days with dignity and respect, not to be left alone to die in a broken system. But even before the COVID-19 pandemic, infectious diseases ran rampant in US nursing homes. Between one and three million infections resulted in 380,000 deaths among nursing home residents each year. That's over 1,000 people per day. All because the nursing home industry has been struggling with Infection Prevention and Control practices (IPC) for decades."Dr. Buffy's practice, IPCWell, is headquartered in the Phoenix metropolitan area and is devoted to mitigating infectious diseases and inappropriate antibiotic prescribing in all healthcare settings to reduce adverse events, infections, antibiotic resistance, re-admissions, and death. Dr. Buffy consults with health care facilities across the United States and internationally (Doctors Without Borders). FOLLOW DR. And how do we turn down the volume on social conditioning and perceived expectations, determine what our “truest truths” really are, and express ourselves in a more aligned way? Today's listener, Sarah, asks these interesting questions, after re-taking the Sparketypes Assessment a year later and getting a result she felt was much closer to who she really was.  Jonathan & Jadah offer: How to acknowledge what you've already uncovered Avoiding the trap of comparing ourselves to our past selves when our seasons of life change Asking ‘where is the social conditioning coming from?' She has been the right hand to many high level execs and spearheaded big results and impact but like so many of us, done so at her own expense and with a lot of burnout. After becoming a new mom in the depths of the Global Pandemic, she resigned from her executive position. Now Sarah is at a crossroads with a solid foundation of skills and accomplishments but this time wants to create a chapter of work that is more aligned with her innate impulses. She shares that she has achieved success in the past with hustle and no spark and this time wants to find more flow and bring back the spark. To do this she wants to have a deeper understanding of her Sparketype, especially since she received a different result having retaken the assessment after all the above shifts. It brings her to her main question - can your past experiences, especially challenging or traumatic ones, distort your view of yourself and therefore affect your Sparketype results? Can social conditioning and external feedback interfere with finding work and expression that is more aligned for us - and if so, how do we reduce its impact or even eliminate it altogether? In case you haven't yet heard, Bill Gates and his minions at the WHO - World Health Organization, some other organization and of course some other evil organization. It's starting, Bill Gates announces the next pandemic date and outbreak, as well as the location for something called SEERS - Severe Epidemic Enterovirus Respiratory Syndrome 2025 - better known as SEERS, or at least that is what they'll be calling it soon. This is EXACTLY how they announced the last global pandemic that occurred in 2020-2022 and this is NOT something to take lightly or laugh off as a conspiracy theory. This is exactly how they do it. They announce it but make it look like it's an exercise or a simulation but in reality EVERYTHING they say that they fear about what "could come"really is about "to come." I really shouldn't need to tell you, or, by now I should have to tell you that this is exactly how it works in this sick and twisted world. Mr. Gates, or "Deep Throat"as we like to call him. "Anal Canaveral" as his friends and tops like to call him. Is the guy who is funding all of these types of warfare on the general public. He sees himself as a man that is responsible for keeping the population at a level which is balanced with nature. For some reason, once a person gets rich they start to see themself as working directly with God, their right or left hand if you will. How in the hell does money make someone feel or see themselves as this person or confidant of God? I really don't understand it. Ever since Bill Gates has struck it rich he feels it's his responsibility to end any overpopulation or acting as God's Celestial Messanger and Guardian of Heaven. I'm not sure where he got these thoughts, theories and ideas from but he better get them out of his head quickly before I stomp them out of his head even quicker.

In this Futurum Live! From the Show Floor at Tanium Converge 2022 Anil Nomula, Associate Vice President and Global Enterprise Architect for Genpact, joins Futurum principal analyst Shelly Kramer. Their conversation centered on how the professional services organization — which has experienced incredibly rapid growth over the last decade plus, growing from 19,000 employees in 2005 to over 100,000 in 2021 — managed to pivot quickly and securely support a global workforce with over 100,000 endpoints in 70 locations around the world in a short period of time using Tanium's cloud-based suite. The pivot wasn't without challenges, which Anil shared, but it did manage to drastically reduce the number of sleepless nights he and his team experienced, which is very good news. In addition, the cost savings Genpact has experienced, the ease of use of the Tanium offerings, and increased endpoint visibility are benefits they greatly enjoy. For more on Genpact's story, and a deeper look at how Tanium has helped Genpact save 75% of network and hosting costs, check out this customer spotlight case study.

English Listening Practice - COVID Left Behind A Lasting Legacy Of Change For most of us, the recent pandemic is over, only now are we seeing the tremendous impact on our society. Especially for the survivors and those who lost loved ones, and those still suffering from the effects of surviving infection. An English lesson that is worth listening to! Today's English listening topic contains a lot of interesting English language, vocabulary and phrases. The lesson also picks up on a topic I think we will all hear more about in the coming months. Help us make more content with a donation People have lost loved ones, children have missed schooling, industries have changed, we have incurred huge societal debts. People still carry the life-changing impact of recovering from infection. It's a lot to process.

Sam is a recent high school graduate who is planning on attending college to play Lacrosse in Pennsylvania. This young man was a 3 sport athlete (Football, Basketball, Lacrosse). Although Sam is playing Lacrosse in college, he shined on the field and court in his other sports. As a high school quarterback Sam was often tasked with managing 10 other teammates to meet a common goal. Possibly wise beyond his years, he gives us an in depth look at what it was like to be a high school athlete during a Global Pandemic. Unfortunately I did not meet Sam until he was a Senior in high school. In that short time, he impressed me with his kindness and leadership ability. Like all young lads, Sam still has a long way to go and has many goals he would still like to accomplish. His two amazing parents helped this young man get to where he is today. He is the only student I've ever met that chose his college based on the landscaping.

Rob Sobhani is the founder of Sparo, a technology company on a mission to democratize charitable giving. With Sparo's patented e-commerce plug-in, retailers can offer an easy way for their consumers to donate a part of their purchase to a charity. The retailer covers the donation cost, not the shopper. What's in it for the retailer? Sparo increases conversion while reducing abandoned online shopping carts. Rob has had an impressive career. He is a leading international expert on energy, domestic policies, and international relations. Formerly a professor at Georgetown University where he taught foreign policy and energy security, he now serves as Chairman and CEO of the Caspian Group Holdings, which provides strategic advisory services in energy. One thing I appreciate about this conversation is that Rob's path is an illustration of how everything we learn, every lesson and experience, is fodder for what we can do now. Those experiences and lessons add to your toolbox. In this episode we discuss: The power of a crucible moment in shaping perspective Building loyalty with online consumers How to embed meaning into a mundane shopping experience Key Takeaways: We live in the most frazzled, multi-tasking time in human history. While attention spans continue to drop, the intrinsic desire to contribute to something bigger than ourselves remains as strong as ever. The Global Pandemic sparked the intrinsic desire-fire even more. Therefore, offering a frictionless experience (which means making it as easy and convenient as possible) that enables people to donate to causes they care about during their regular online shopping has significant potential to increase giving. Especially when that donation doesn't come out of the shopper's pocket. Beyond reducing friction, there are three other elements for adoption and acceleration that Rob spoke about as themes for success across his career, whether with Sparo or sustainable energy. These were: democratizing access to participation, reducing costs, and using systems thinking to ensure the approach can be executed across each piece of the puzzle. When we ask questions that might feel off the wall, like “what if 80% of lottery winnings went to support social and environmental change programs selected by the winner, and 20% was pocketed by the winner?”. That type of question has the power to jolt us out of the sticky trap of the status quo. That type of question can put a crack in the belief that since this is the way something has always been done, it's the way it needs to be. Ask yourself, what questions in your industry, or in your life, feel completely absurd? It might be worth sitting with those for a bit to understand why. Dr. Buffy Lloyd-Krejci is one of the foremost authorities on infection prevention and control in nursing homes and long-term care facilities, and it's safe to say she has never done things halfway. From a young age, she had a curiosity for healthcare and mathematics, and intertwined those two passions to ultimately found her own practice, IPCWell, consulting with health care facilities across the country. She joins Danielle and Jackie to shed light on a population that is often left far behind, the elderly. When she first started working in nursing homes and quickly realized that long-term care fell to the bottom of everyone's list, she had to ask herself and those around her: Why aren't we doing more about this? So, she decided to do something! Jackie, Danielle, and Dr. Buffy discuss the misconceptions about nursing homes, the lack of care for the elderly population as a whole, and tangible next steps we can take to make a change within a historically overlooked industry. Dr. Buffy will inspire you to want to take action in your local community and spread awareness about the broken system that is long-term care.
