231. When HR goes rogue, with former Adidas VP of HR, Tony Cooke

Truth, Lies and Workplace Culture

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 11, 2025 46:11

Welcome back to Truth, Lies & Work, the award-winning podcast where behavioral science meets workplace culture. Hosted by Chartered Occupational Psychologist Leanne Elliott and business owner Al Elliott, this episode features Tony Cooke, former VP of Human Resources at Adidas, who spent decades proving that HR doesn't have to be the department everyone dreads. Episode Summary Imagine you're the head of an HR team and you get asked to present the team's vision for the future workforce of the largest sportswear company in Europe. But instead of sitting down and putting together the usual dull PowerPoint slide presentation, you instead decide to make a James Bond style movie. You have the MD kidnapped, he's tied up, he's stuffed into a chest and he does multiple takes until he is bruised and battered. That's exactly what happened at Adidas, where Tony Cooke was running HR. His approach was to make HR more human by appealing to people's sense of humor and showing genuine personality. His initiatives were so effective that HQ kept stealing them and rolling them out worldwide, earning his team the nickname "The North Mafia." What We Cover Why HR Became the Villain How HR became the convenient pantomime villain in organizations The Waggish Approach What it means to be "waggish" and take formality out of HR Maverick Initiatives The "Addie Oscars" - cost-neutral recognition that packed halls to the rafters Speed dating for talent across different markets "DIVIN" (Diversity + Inclusion) - making difficult topics fun and engaging The James Bond Movie How Tony's team created a spy movie instead of PowerPoint slides for Workforce 2020 Key Takeaways 1. Collaborate with Senior Stakeholders Early Tony's biggest learning was that even the best ideas need buy-in from decision makers. Build those relationships before you need them, not after. 2. Learn the Business Inside and Out Don't just be an HR person - be a business partner who understands revenue, competitors, and strategic priorities. Tony challenged HR professionals to know their company's turnover. 3. Show Your Human Side Stop being the aloof rule-maker and let people see that you're human with frailties, bad days, and emotions. People warm to authenticity, not perfection. The Results Adidas became known as a talent factory with a conveyor belt of leaders going to senior roles across America, Amsterdam, Germany, and beyond. That's the business impact of making HR genuinely human at one of the world's most recognizable brands. I often quote a great Jim Carrey line that I think is a great approach for life. Jim's father always wanted to be a comedian, and would have been a great one, but he opted for the ‘safer bet' and became an accountant instead. But he was ultimately made unemployed, and Jim learned a valuable lesson from that, saying “You can fail at what you don't want. So you might as well take a chance on doing what you love”My guest on this episode, John Travers, initially opted for the safer bet of a well-paid job as an engineer with a global energy company, but before he started the role, he went to India and did some volunteer work – and that changed everything. He returned home to that job and worked in the corporate and start-up world for a number of years, but he fulfilled the promise he made to himself in India – he would dedicate his life to helping society's most frail and vulnerable people.Today, John is a qualified GP and is not only making a difference in the world, but he is happy and fulfilled by the work he is doing. He has just published a book about his time working as a doctor, the people he has met and treated, and the impact they have had on him. Its call A Shot of Hope and he'll be telling me all about his fascinating story on this episode of The Mario Rosenstock Podcast.COMEDY – How are supposed to cope with this heatwave hitting Ireland? A few well-known people share their advice, including Michael O'Leary, Michael D Higgins, and Ivan Yates. Produced by Patrick Haughey, AudioBrand

In this special "snack episode" of the Thriving Practice Podcast, Miranda Dorta interviews Tracy Cherpeski about the evolution of the healthcare industry since 2010. Tracy shares insights on current challenges facing independent practices, emerging business models, and essential skills for practice owners to thrive in today's healthcare landscape. From the concerning trend of private equity acquisitions to promising signs of physicians returning to independent practice, Tracy offers her perspective on where healthcare is heading and how practice owners can adapt. Main Points: Private equity acquisition of practices and expansion of larger institutions are concerning trends affecting independent healthcare practices Early signs suggest some physicians are returning to private practice after experiencing larger institutional settings Independent single-provider practices face significant financial challenges with high operating costs Collaborative group practices with multiple providers offer a sustainable model for the future Practice owners need to embrace their CEO role and focus on strategic leadership, delegation, and resource allocation Smart investment in marketing and operations is essential for practice growth, despite some resistance A shift back toward more relational, neighborhood-based practices may be emerging Notable Quotes: "I see independent provider practices struggling a lot with an individual, just one provider. So I am seeing a little bit more of a leaning towards a group focus or multiple providers." "I see practices that maybe are successful but they're not as profitable as they could be." "Most of our clients do not think of themselves as a CEO first. But if you're a business owner, you are the CEO." "It's not how you spend your time. If you're spending your time, you're probably wasting it... It's how you invest the resource, the finite resource of your time and energy." Miranda's Bio: Miranda Dorta, B.F.A. In this episode hosts Allison and Claire share transformative lessons they've learned throughout their careers. Drawing from their personal experiences, they detail the essential idea that your first job doesn't have to define your career. Instead, it's a valuable learning opportunity filled with potential for growth and purpose. The corporate landscape needs more people of faith to champion positive change within organizations. Allison and Claire wholeheartedly believe that by embracing their identities as Catholics in the workplace, they can inspire a new perspective in corporate culture. They challenge the notion that work must be a mundane necessity divorced from spirituality, encouraging listeners to see their contributions through a prayerful lens. Each moment spent in the office can, in fact, be an opportunity for worship and service. Community also plays a crucial role in this journey. The hosts advocate for building supportive networks, urging young professionals to connect with each other for encouragement and growth.
