Hello Runners, Happy Thanksgiving! This is the time of the year when we all give thanks for the blessings in our lives. And we share our time with the people we love over a nice meal. Thankfully, we have that opportunity this year, though we must still be respectful to follow the current restrictions as we travel. I'll be visiting my brother in Pittsburgh this Thanksgiving. Congratulations to all of you who will be running the 2022 Boston Marathon. Everyone who qualified this past year will be accepted! If you've not run Boston in the past and are qualified, go for it. Get it done. Qualifying times are set for 2023, and who knows what the cutoff time will be. In this episode, I dive into the subject of the heart and running. I mentioned two runners last episode that experienced heart attacks during their race. And the most publicized was 34 year old Meghan Roth at this year's Boston Marathon. My family has a strong history of heart issues and I must pay close attention to my heart health. Even if you think you are healthy and in shape, it is good to get a checkup at least once a year. Meghan was in peak shape. Preventive maintenance is the best medicine for sure. I focus on two runners, Marla Sewall and Darlene Anita Scott, both were in shape and had heart issues. They are both grateful to be alive. And I also throw in a heartfelt story that you will absolutely love. Enjoy this episode. If you know someone with a unique running story, please feel free to share it with me. You can Email it to me at jim@feelgoodrunning.com Thank you for listening to the Feel Good Running Podcast, and please share this with your running friends and on your social media platforms. I would very much appreciate it. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Eat a lot because you earned it! And remember, especially now, to be kind to others, even if some are not kind to you. It's good for the heart, mind, and soul. The world needs more kindness, right!. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the latest with the San Francisco Giants. Brandon Belt accepted the Giants' $18.4 million qualifying offer yesterday, meaning he'll be back at that price in 2022. It's a huge offseason item checked off the list for the Giants, as Brandon Belt has emerged as one of the game's best hitters in recent seasons, and he has emerged as a leader in the clubhouse. Losing Belt and Buster Posey, who retired after the season, would be a big blow to the Giants' culture and lineup. Belt is also an excellent defensive first baseman, so it's great to have him locked up for at least one more year. Belt was the only player among 14 who received the qualifying offer to accept it. Last season, Kevin Gausman was one of just two players to accept the offer, and it worked out beautifully for San Francisco. Ben next discusses Giants general manager Scott Harris telling KNBR's Kerry Crowley yesterday that the team hoped to cross the finish line with one or two pitchers in the next week. In the last few years, anytime either Harris or Farhan Zaidi has said something like that, it has come to fruition. So that's something fans should be on the lookout for in the coming days. Another starting pitcher, Justin Verlander, came off the board yesterday with a stunning two-year, $50 million deal with the Astros (the second year is a fully guaranteed player option). Four of the 22 starters to appear on the Top 50 Free Agents lists by MLB Trade Rumors, ESPN, and FanGraphs have already signed. The Giants will need to get in that market sooner or later, and it's worth pointing out that the pitchers who have signed have received more years, a higher AAV, and more total money than predicted by the three sources mentioned above. Finally, Ben discusses a Marcus Semien rumor and the fact that tomorrow is the deadline for teams to add players to the 40-man roster to protect them from selection in the upcoming Rule 5 Draft. The Semien rumor, courtesy of the Seattle Times, states that the Mariners may need to offer the player a five-year deal in the $150 million range to keep him from the Giants or Yankees on a four-year deal. Ben discusses Semien's potential fit in San Francisco and how he would make the Giants' infield defense among the very best in baseball. Ben discusses which players need to be protected by adding them to the 40-man, and gets listeners set for tomorrow's deadline. Follow & Subscribe to the Locked On Giants Podcast on these platforms

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the latest with the San Francisco Giants. Today is the deadline for players tagged with the one-year, $18.4 million qualifying offer to accept or reject the offer. Brandon Belt was among 14 players around the league who received the offer. Ben explains everything the QO is (and is not), and makes a prediction about what Belt will ultimately decide. Ben gives detailed thoughts about why Belt would accept the offer, and why he would reject it. Ben ultimately lands on Belt rejected the qualifying offer, because he thinks Belt could get a two- or three-year deal worth around $15 million per season. When healthy, Belt has been among the very best hitters in baseball since the start of the 2020 season, trialing only Mike Trout and Bryce Harper in wRC+ among players with at least 500 plate appearances since '20. Ben also discusses the state of the starting pitcher free agent market, with Noah Syndergaard and Eduardo Rodriguez coming off the board in recent days. The trend in the market right now is that players are receiving more than their average predicted contracts by MLB Trade Rumors, ESPN, and FanGraphs. Ben ponders what this means for the Giants, who must enter the starting pitcher market in a big way this offseason. Specifically regarding high-upside pitchers with injury concerns, Syndergaard's hefty one-year deal may mean Justin Verlander and Carlos Rodón will have even more robust markets than imagined, and may cause the Giants to pivot to another segment of the market. Finally, Ben discusses Gabe Kapler winning NL Manager of the Year in a landslide. Follow & Subscribe to the Locked On Giants Podcast on these platforms

Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 8, 2021 30:38

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick details a busy weekend that was for the San Francisco Giants. Sunday was a day of forced action, as qualifying offer and option decisions had to be made. The Giants exercised their options for Wilmer Flores ($3.5M) and José Álvarez ($1.5M), and officially declined their $22M option for Johnny Cueto, in favor of a $5M buyout. Flores and Álvarez were strong contributors for the Giants in 2021, and it's good news for the team that they'll be back next year, both in the final year of their deals with San Francisco. Cueto is officially a free agent after six mostly underwhelming years with the Giants. His first season in orange and black was spectacular, but he wasn't able to come anywhere close to it again over the final five. The Giants extended a one-year, $18.4M qualifying offer to Brandon Belt. There was some possibility that they might extend qualifying offers to Anthony DeSclafani and/or Alex Wood, but both were unlikely and the team ultimately elected to pass. This doesn't mean that they won't be back; just that they didn't extend them qualifying offers. Belt will have 10 days to accept or reject the Giants' offer. If he signs with another team this offseason, the Giants will receive Draft Pick compensation. Belt is a candidate to accept the offer, but he could also work out an extension to stay in San Francisco. Finally, Ben discusses Brandon Crawford winning his fourth career Gold Glove Award. He was spectacular defensively in 2021, which is a testament to his own hard work and the influence of Kai Correa and Ron Wotus. The Giants' new coaching staff has done a tremendous job getting the most out of players since taking over in 2020, and that includes Correa and his influence over the defense. Crawford, Belt, and Buster Posey were all at or near their best in 2021 despite being in their mid-30s. Ben reminds listeners of how significant of a loss it was when hitting coach Donnie Ecker accepted a position as bench coach and offensive coordinator with the Texas Rangers last week. Mike Yastrzemski was a Gold Glove finalist in right field, but he did not win the award. Still, it's an honor just for Yaz to have been named a finalist. He'll also talk about the Dodgers declining their option on Joe Kelly, the Dodgers being shut out in the National League Gold Glove voting, and potential free agent targets Jon Gray, Carlos Rodon, Andrew Heaney, and Nick Castellanos. On Sunday, Raisel Iglesias was tendered a qualifying offer of one year, $18.4 million for the 2022 season by the Los Angeles Angels. Iglesias now has until November 17 to either accept or deny the offer. He can deny and still work out an extension with the Angels. He can deny, and become a free agent to test the market, or flat out accept the offer. If he elects free agency, the Angels would receive a draft pick compensation from whichever team signs him. Jared Walsh and David Fletcher did not win Gold Gloves, we break down what it means historically for the Angels. The New York Mets extended Noah Syndergaard the qualifying offer over the weekend, which means that Thor will likely be back in Queens next season. Some pundits have called this an overpay, since Syndergaard has not pitched in two years, but that could not be further from the truth. Host Ryan Finkelstein breaks down why Syndergaard deserves every penny of the $18.4 million he will receive next season and why he could be the steal of the offseason for the Mets. This week we're talking with Andrea Miller. Andrea qualified for the US Senior Women's Open this year and in VSGA play won her second consecutive VSGA Senior Women's Amateur title. For the next few weeks we're going to be sharing conversations with the Virginia women who competed in the US Women's Mid-Am in September. Qualifying for a USGA championship is always a big deal and the diversity of age and work / playing balance the five Virginia women who qualified is fascinating…and they're all women who are over 25…because that's what a mid-am is but in the golf industry, that's the age when many women drift away from the game to focus on families or careers so to see how these five do we thought would be fascinating.
