The panel return on this edition to discuss Tottenham Hotspur closing in on the signings of Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson, with both deals now agreed in principle as Roberto De Zerbi's rebuild gathers pace in North London. We also reflect on the news that Tottenham Hotspur have ‘pulled out' of the race to sign Joao Palhinha. Spurs' buy option expires on Monday, and Sporting CP are moving ahead with the deal. Talks with Bayern Munich are expected to follow. Palhinha impressed on loan at Spurs and has expressed a desire to stay, with the London club holding a €30 million purchase option. Sporting want to bring the 30-year-old back to Lisbon, where he began his career. The midfielder is willing to take a significant pay cut to rejoin his boyhood club, and a broad understanding with the player is said to be in place. A new loan move for Luka Vuskovic to Hamburger SV is apparently not a current option avaliable. The Croatian has two options: Long-term contract extension with high salary. A move to one of the biggest clubs in Europe. Talks are ongoing over the player's future. Luka Vuskovic has revealed his Tottenham future will not be decided until after the World Cup. We discuss what the best next step is for the youngster. Tottenham Hotspur are expected to strengthen their attack this summer, and a new report suggests that Marcus Rashford could become an option. Spurs have reportedly shown interest in signing Marcus Rashford this summer after a 28-goal contribution season with Barcelona, during which he scored 14 goals and provided 14 assists. We debate whether the Club could entice him into coming to the club and whether Spurs can get the best out of him. Finally we close on the news that Spurs have launched an internal review into last season. An internal review has been ongoing since the appointment of Dan Lewindon as Performance Director from Manchester City. This comes after he found significant challenges within Spurs. He joined the Club one day before Thomas Frank was sacked. We reflect on whether the Club will take the learnings from last season and put them into action in both the upcoming window in addition to decisions made both off/on the pitch. In this episode of the Science for Sport Podcast, Richard Graves welcomes Dr Dave Hancock back to the show. Dave has spent more than three decades working in elite sport, including roles with Chelsea, Leeds United, the England national team and the New York Knicks. He is now CEO of Apollo, where his work focuses on helping performance teams use data, technology and AI to better understand player availability, injury risk and performance. Dave begins by sharing the latest developments in his Blind Screen approach, which looks beyond traditional testing by examining movement quality, control and rotational demands. He explains how Apollo is combining screening information with AI-generated insights, practitioner feedback and individualised exercise recommendations. The conversation then turns to the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Drawing on his experience of working with England at the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012, Dave discusses the challenges facing performance and medical teams across a long international tournament: heat, travel, accumulated club workload, recovery, sleep, mental freshness and the need to bring a squad together around one common goal. This is a practical discussion about the margins that matter at the highest level of sport, from interpreting data more effectively to preparing players and staff for the demands of tournament football. In this episode you will learn How Dave's Blind Screen approach is developing and being used with elite athletes and teams. Why rotational movement may be an important missing consideration in traditional screening methods. How AI can help practitioners combine objective data with coaching and clinical insight. The key physical demands facing players heading into the 2026 World Cup. Why player preparation must become increasingly individualised after a demanding club season. The importance of sleep, recovery monitoring, travel planning and heat acclimatisation during a major tournament. Why mental freshness, squad togetherness and staff culture can influence performance at international level. What Dave learned from working with England at the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012. In This EpisodeMartin I. Jones, host of the Optimiing Performance Podcast, a performance psychologist and sleep specialist, explains why sleep is essential for performance and how to spot sleep debt using a quick yes/no checklist (alarm reliance, rapid sleep onset, caffeine use, nodding off, weekend catch-up sleep, snoring, and drowsy driving). He defines sleep as a multiphasic process (REM and non-REM stages) and describes the two-process model: rising sleep pressure (adenosine) and circadian alerting, including melatonin release in darkness. He highlights that insufficient sleep most strongly degrades cognitive and emotional functioning, and notes that people don't adapt to sleep deprivation. Martin challenges the “8 hours” myth, emphasising individualised sleep needs, and offers practical ways to improve sleep through protecting and personalizing sleep, lifestyle and bedroom sleep hygiene (caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, diet, exercise timing), stimulus control, and cognitive techniques such as journaling, paradoxical intention, articulatory suppression, imagery/mindfulness, rational thinking about wearables, and daytime problem-solving planning.Guest, Cast and CrewMartin I. Jones is a performance psychologist and sleep specialist with more than 20 years of experience supporting performers across sport, military, and corporate settings. Martin has postgraduate degrees in sport and exercise psychology (MSc and PhD) from Loughborough University and Sleep Medicine (MSc) from the University of Oxford, and has authored or co-authored more than 50 publications. Following a career in academia, Martin forged a new path in the UK Ministry of Defence as a research psychologist and Principal Advisor on Human Performance and Human Augmentation. Martin also represented the UK and served as the national lead to the NATO Science and Technology Organisation (STO) Human Factors and Medicine (HFM) Research Panel and contributed to several research task groups. Leighton spends two days on the ground at the National Golf Centre, gaining a real feel for the work that goes into driving success at national level. The episode not only highlights the structure behind the programme but also offers valuable insight and perspective directly from the players experiencing it first-hand. We begin this second part with an in-depth conversation with Jenny Henderson and Ben Gorvett, Performance Managers working across the girls', women's, boys' and men's squads. Jenny and Ben offer a clear perspective on how the performance programme is structured and how they support players at different stages of their development. They discuss the balance between long-term athlete development and short-term performance, how individual player plans are built, and the importance of aligning coaching, physical preparation, psychology and competition scheduling to help players perform at their best. Next, we hear from Tyler Weaver, speaking to us from Tallahassee, Florida, where he is currently studying at Florida State University while also representing the men's squad. Tyler shares his experience of combining university golf in the United States with international performance expectations, and reflects on the challenges and opportunities that come with that environment. A standout moment in his journey so far was competing in the 2025 US Open at Oakmont, and Tyler gives insight into what that experience was like and what he took away from competing on one of golf's biggest stages. We then catch up with Nick Soto, England Golf Putting Coach, who explains his role within the programme and the impact of having access to world-class facilities. Nick talks through how he works with players to develop their putting skills and the importance of measurement, feedback and how psychology and small performance gains on the greens can translate into meaningful results in competition. To close the episode, we speak with Annabel Peaford and Charlotte Naughton from the women's squad. Both are highly talented prospects who have progressed through the England Golf pathway, and they share their experiences of life within the programme. On today's episode, host Pete Moore welcomes Troy Taylor, Senior Director of Performance Innovation for Tonal. With a deep background in elite sports, Troy shares his journey from working with Olympic teams to transforming training methodologies at Tonal. We dive into discussions on the importance of both strength and cardio, the intricacies and challenges of training elite athletes, and how technological advancements in fitness are shaping the future. Whether you're a fitness enthusiast or a professional in the industry, this episode is packed with insights on optimizing performance and longevity. Taylor boasts an impressive 20-year career in the elite sports arena, contributing to the success of three different Olympic teams: Great Britain, Canada, and the USA. Over the course of seven Olympic Games, he has worked across approximately 10-11 different sports in roles including sports scientist, strength and conditioning coach, and physiologist. Taylor's pinnacle role was as the Performance Director for US Ski and Snowboard, where he spent six years guiding athletes like Mikaela Shiffrin, Lindsey Vonn, and Shaun White. Holding graduate degrees in sports fitness and health, Taylor passionately advocates for the importance of both cardio and strength training for longevity and a better quality of life. Regarding the opportunity in the home market for strength training, he states, "The saturation of the strength market is nowhere near what companies like Peloton are doing in the cardio market right now. So there's still a lot of opportunity in that and in adjacent spaces, whether that's within personal training gyms or in corporate wellness or in boutique fitness and all of these sort of auxiliary places." Key themes discussed Olympic sports career overview Evaluating new trends Cross-training for athletic skills Sports metrics: Too much data? Elite athletes' consistent edge Future of fitness innovation Untapped potential in the strength market Time-efficient training insights "Efficient " gym workouts explained A few key takeaways: 1. Integration of Cardio and Strength Training: Troy emphasized the importance of both cardiovascular and strength training for long-term health and performance. He noted the shift in focus over the years from predominantly cardio to recognizing the significant benefits of strength training for everyone, including the general population. 2. Holistic Approach to Training Elite Athletes: Taylor highlighted the necessity of understanding individual athletes needs, their history of successful training, and their sport-specific demands. He talked about the balance between relying on athlete feedback and introducing innovative, evidence-based methods to optimize training and performance. 3. Principled Approach to Performance Innovation: At Tonal, Troy uses a structured approach to filter through new trends and technologies. This includes checking for underlying mechanisms, understanding the dose-response relationship, and ensuring the data is reliable. He emphasized the importance of combining principles with the latest innovations for effective performance enhancement. 4. Unique Needs of Different Sports and Personalized Training: Troy talked about adapting strategies across different sports, borrowing techniques from one sport to benefit another. For example, alpine skiing requires specific endurance like handling longer term isometric loads, which informs how they train and condition athletes for those particular requirements. 5. Consumer Engagement and Enjoyment: Troy shared insights from research showing that engagement and enjoyment are crucial for sustained fitness activity. He mentioned a study where users on Tonal maintained consistent enjoyment and engagement levels over eight weeks, unlike traditional gym equipment users whose enjoyment decreased over time.
