October 11, 1991. Bolney, England. The dismembered torso of a male homicide victim which has been rolled up in some carpet is discovered in a wooded area next to a bridle path. His head and both of his hands have been removed and since the victim cannot be identified, he is buried under the name “Unknown Male”. Investigators explore a number of different leads, including a wanted German fraudster who was living in the area at the time the torso was discovered, as well as the possibility that the victim's death was a gangland killing, but the crime is never solved. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we travel back to the United Kingdom to explore the bizarre story of an unidentified decedent known only as “The Bolney Torso”. In this week's emergency episode, Fergus delves into the latest industry statistics released by Wine GB, accompanied by the wonderful Phoebe French, communications manager at Wine GB. Unfortunately, Lee couldn't join the podcast this week as he found himself unexpectedly detained by Sussex Police on suspicion of attempting to “float a winery out to sea.” While this peculiar incident has temporarily sidelined Lee, rest assured he'll be back with us next week to share his unique perspectives. Seizing this unexpected opportunity, Fergus decided to record from his parked car in an industrial estate. Consequently, the sound quality on his end is less than optimal. We apologise for this inconvenience and kindly ask you to bear with this episode, dear listener. Despite the audio hiccups. Phoebe's contributions are crystal clear, providing genuinely important and relevant information about the state of the fastest-growing agricultural sector in the United Kingdom. Phoebe discusses the significant growth the industry has seen recently, the challenges it faces, and the exciting developments on the horizon. From advancements in viticulture to the impact of climate change, this episode covers a broad spectrum of topics that are essential for anyone interested in the UK's burgeoning wine sector. There are many challenges ahead, but also much to be positive about, making this a truly enlightening episode. So, tune in and enjoy this informative discussion, and stay tuned for Lee's return next week.
Novelist Helen Heckety joins Nuala to talk about her debut work, Alter Ego. It's about a young woman who decides to leave her old life behind and move to a new place where no one knows she is disabled. Helen, who has a physical disability that can sometimes be invisible, was compelled to write about a disabled character she had never seen represented in literature.According to The Times, Labour – if elected – would make it easier for people to legally transition by removing the need for them to prove they have lived as their preferred gender for two years. They will instead be given a two-year cooling off period after applying for a Gender Recognition Certificate. The Labour Party say there is nothing new in their policy on this. Nuala is joined by Geri Scott senior political correspondent at the Times to discuss. This weekend marked the final dates of Taylor Swift's Eras tour in the UK - until she returns again in August. The show has been described as a ‘masterpiece' and ‘seven shades of incredible.' Journalists Polly Vernon and Anna Willis were lucky enough to attend, and they join Nuala to go over their highlights. Last week I had the pleasure of interviewing Chris Thompson, Treasurer and Dep Secretary of Sussex Police Federation. This followed an exciting engagement event they ran for officers at Sussex Police. It was a really interesting perspective speaking to the Federation about support for officers, including shining a light on some innovative practices here in Sussex Police. Pay and morale survey, national and local Federation issues, the role of the Federation, professional standards, supporting officers to achieve success, training, scrutiny of officers, the fairness of promotion, their new Sussex Fed magazine, and more. Welcome to our hebdomadal show that looks back over the past seven days. This episode, as we take our first tentative steps into autumn, the greathearted Caroline Farrow returns to talk us through what has captured her attention, piqued her interest or made her blood boil in the news, media and tabloids including... - Black History Month: Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization - 'It is going to be a difficult winter'. PM warns of tough times ahead as energy bills soar from today. - Victory of Christian parents who recently won a five-year legal battle with the DoE that forced the government to review its transgender policies. - Trans charity Mermaids investigated over ‘breast binders given to children' against their parents' wishes. - Virgin Atlantic says it is the world's 'most inclusive airline' with staff being able to wear optional pronoun badges and choose whichever uniform 'best represents them'. - Sussex Police forced to apologise after saying they 'do not tolerate' gender comments about trans paedophile who sexually abused children. - PayPal forced to back down after their assault on Free Speech groups. - The sudden and unexplained rise of Adult Sudden Death Syndrome. In 2010, frustrated by many of the media headlines and negative coverage of Catholicism, Caroline began a blog in defence of Catholic teaching and to reflect on UK current affairs and world events through the lens of a Catholic woman. What began as nothing more than personal musings designed to explain and propose controversial ethics and life issues to those who had struggled with them, or to de-bunk misleading narratives and headlines, soon mushroomed and popular posts would receive more than 30,000 unique visitors a day. Between 2011 and 2017, she was a member of the organisation Catholic Voices, set up to promote the defence of Catholic teaching in the public square and made numerous media interventions on their behalf and quickly became the 'go to' voice for media organisations looking to represent a female conservative Catholic point of view. Since 2013 Caroline has writes a weekly column for the Catholic Universe and has written for and featured in a number of other publications such as the Catholic Herald, the National Catholic Register, the Conservative Woman, Mercatornet, Crisis Magazine, LifeSiteNews and Church Militant. She used to write on Catholic culture at the now defunct Spectator Arts blog and has been featured in the Daily Mail, the Observer and the New Statesman. In 2013, Caroline was included as part of the first cohort of the BBC's '100 women' and she regularly features on BBC News, Sky News, ITV's Good Morning Britain, BBC Sunday Morning Live, the Big Questions and has made multiple appearances on Radio 4's flagship Today programme, Woman's Hour, the Moral Maze and the Sunday programme as well as featuring in one-off documentaries. Caroline also presented the coverage for March for Life UK for EWTN and has contributed to News Nightly and Celtic Connections. She also frequently contributes to Talk Radio, LBC and BBC local radio as well as BBC Radio Ulster, discussing matters pertaining to Catholicism, feminism and the challenges of motherhood and family life. Caroline has an eclectic career background. She began her professional life as a student accountant for a big 5 firm before succumbing to a desire for travel and adventure and became a member of cabin crew working both long and short-haul routes for internationally acclaimed airlines. Having got the travel bug out of her system, she returned to work within investment banking and private equity in the City of London until her first child was born. Caroline is currently the campaign director at CitizenGO, has 5 children of school-age, four girls and one boy and is married to a Catholic priest who converted from Anglicanism, a few years after they were married. On this week's episode of Partners in Crime, Adam Croft is joined once again by Graham Bartlett, former detective superintendent of Sussex Police. Unsurprisingly, the subject of real life crime is discussed again, with Adam sparking things off by mentioning a Daily Mail article about knife crime. Also in the episode, we hear about the McIlvanney Prize longlist courtesy of CrimeReads, Adam mentions a crime related episode of Who Do You Think You Are featuring Richard Osman, while Graham tells us we should all be watching BBC crime drama Sherwood. Adam also has a look at a Daily Record article which reveals the first names of people most likely to be criminals. So have a listen to hear if you're on it. My guest for this episode is Mike Churchyard. Mike is an ex-police offer turned sports massage therapist. Mike had always wanted to run his own business, so facing retirement after a 30 year career in Sussex Police, he trained in sports massage therapy and in early 2020 was set to open the doors to his new clinic. One global pandemic and two years later, Mike is now able to reflect and appreciate how such a tough and challenging time was actually a blessing in disguise – and how it enabled him to grow his business at a pace that suited him. One of Mike's motivation to set up his own business in retirement was to create a lifestyle of freedom and adventure and he's done just that – splitting his time between Sussex and the Lake District – travelling between the two in his camper van, Tigger. Mike is a real advocate for trusting his intuition, going against the grain and creating a life and business that works for him. I really hope you love this episode. 22 year old student Jessie Earl left her bedsit in the town of Eastbourne on May the 15th 1980 and was never seen again. Her parents searched for her and contacted anyone that they could think of but she wasn't located. Sadly 9 years later, her body was recovered at Beachy Head in Eastbourne in suspicious circumstances. She was not the only young woman to go missing in the 1980's. 18 year old Louise Kay had vanished on June the 23rd 1988 and both her nor her car were ever seen again. The question is were these two connected and what really happened to them? In the United Kingdom, it's estimated that two women are killed each week by their partners and former partners. A lot of these women, unfortunately, are let down by the very system put in place to protect them. Far too often, victims of domestic abuse, harassment and stalking are not taken seriously and these failures can lead to violence and sometimes murder. In 2016, a young woman reported her stalker numerous times to Sussex Police. Instead of taking action against the stalker, the police would take action against the victim.SPONSORS -Vodacast: Thank you to Vodacast for sponsoring this episode! Brighton - EnglandBrighton is a constituent part of the city of Brighton and Hove, a former town situated on the southern coast of England, in the county of East Sussex. It is best known as a seaside resort and is positioned 47 miles south of London. It was created from the neighbouring but formerly separately governed towns of Brighton and Hove. This Episode contains the Hometown Murder Cases of:The Babes in the Wood Murders were the murders of two nine-year-old girls, Nicola Fellows and Karen Hadaway, on 9 October 1986, by a 20-year-old local roofer, Russell Bishop in Wild Park, Moulsecoomb, Brighton, England. Bishop was tried and acquitted in 1987. The case remained open until 10 December 2018, when Bishop was found guilty of the murders in a second trial. The investigation into the two girls' murders is the largest and longest-running inquiry ever conducted by Sussex Police.Nicholas von Hessen (born Nicholas Marcel Hoogstraten, better known as Nicholas van Hoogstraten; born 25 February 1945) is a British businessman and convicted criminal involved in property. Van Hoogstraten is known for his property empire as well as his life history: in 1968, he was convicted and sent to prison for paying a gang to attack a business associate. In 2002, he was sentenced to 10 years for the manslaughter of a business rival; the verdict was overturned on appeal and he was subsequently released, but in 2005 he was ordered to pay the victim's family £6 million in a civil case. He has been estimated to be worth £500 million, although he claims his assets in the UK have all been placed in the names of his children. The Brighton trunk murders were two murders linked to Brighton, England, in 1934. In each, the body of a murdered woman was placed in a trunk. The murders led to Brighton being dubbed "The Queen of Slaughtering Places" (a play on "The Queen of Watering Places").

Show #783 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 18th May 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. TESLA GIGAFACTORY 1 COULD GROW AS PARTNER PANASONIC REPORTS MORE PROFITS "Not only did Tesla pull a profit in the first quarter of 2020, but its battery partner Panasonic said on Monday its battery business recorded earnings in the black, too, for the second time. Now, Gigafactory 1, based in Nevada, could see an expansion." says Roadshow by CNET: "Panasonic Chief Financial Officer Hirokazu Umeda specifically said the company was "in discussions right now" to expand work at the facility. Although the company is no longer Tesla's exclusive battery provider (the company works with LG Chem in China), the partnership has blossomed in recent years and recorded two profitable quarters. Umeda mentioned demand is beyond the current capacity of 35 gigawatts per year." And from that Reuters report, they say: "Umeda hinted that Panasonic has been developing new batteries with Tesla. “We will be working to improve materials and technologies throughout this financial year,” he said. The Tesla battery business provided a bright spot in Panasonic’s otherwise grim earnings, hit by plant closures and supply chain disruptions for its laptops, washing machines, automotive components and factory equipment. Panasonic has decided to exit solar cell production at Tesla’s New York plant this year. It also decided not to build a new battery plant for Tesla in China. The U.S. car maker has entered into partnerships with South Korea’s LG Chem Ltd (051910.KS) and China’s CATL" https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/tesla-gigafactory-nevada-reopen-production-elon-musk https://www.reuters.com/article/us-panasonic-results-idUSKBN22U0MF ELECTRIC VEHICLE SALES TO FALL 18% IN 2020 "Sales of electric passenger vehicles are forecast to fall 18% in 2020, to 1.7 million worldwide – with the coronavirus crisis interrupting ten successive years of strong growth." according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance: "However, sales of combustion engine cars are set to drop even faster this year (by 23%), and the long-term electrification of transport is projected to accelerate in the years ahead. BNEF’s analysis suggests that global sales of internal combustion engine, or ICE, cars peaked in 2017 and will continue their long-term decline after a temporary post-crisis recovery. For the first time, BNEF sees overall new passenger vehicle sales peaking in 2036 as changing global demographics, increasing urbanization and more shared mobility outweigh the effects of economic development – though the fleet size keeps growing. Electric models are seen accounting for 3% of global car sales in 2020, rising to 7% in 2023, at some 5.4 million units." https://bnef.turtl.co/story/evo-2020/ AS COVID-19 HITS ELECTRIC VEHICLES, SOME THRIVE, OTHERS DIE And quoting the BNEF report, Bloomberg today looked at which countries will drive EV adoption: "The pandemic ravaged economy is expected to give electric vehicles a boost in China, Europe and countries committed to sparking battery power via financial stimulus and infrastructure spending, In the U.S., electric vehicles sales will shrink to just 1.7% of the personal auto market in 2021. At the same time, the sector will swell to 8.1% of all sales in China, which accounts for the largest share of global EV sales, and 5% of those in Europe, the BNEF report says." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-05-19/as-covid-19-hits-electric-vehicles-some-thrive-others-die?sref=W369vOBR VW PARKS CARS WHEREVER THEY GO In an article translated (Google translate!) from German: "Volkswagen , the largest automobile manufacturer in the world, they are currently mainly occupied with parking. The group has had difficulties with software development for quite some time - the electric car ID.3 is therefore pre-produced without a complete operating system, in the hope that the software will be added later when it is finally ready. In the meantime, thousands of ID.3s are parked as soulless cases, partly on the premises of the VW factory in Zwickau, as shown here, partly in a huge parking lot in Saxony, which VW does not like to show to the public. But now the car manufacturer could soon run out of space: Because not only does VW have software problems with the production of the ID.3, but recently also with the good old Golf. Delivery of the Golf 8 had to be stopped because the emergency assistant was not working. Nevertheless, the company wants to continue producing the Golf 8 and simply, exactly, park thousands of cars somewhere until this pretty embarrassing software problem is solved." https://www.sueddeutsche.de/wirtschaft/vw-golf-software-problem-1.4911260 2020 BMW X5 XDRIVE45E REVIEW – THE NEW BEST BUY "Because the X5 is one of the best-selling cars it has on sale today and keeping the fleet’s CO2 emissions in check is a tricky ordeal. A hybrid will definitely help out with that, especially considering the tax systems in various countries around the world." says BMWBlog: "The new BMW X5 xDrive45e came with a host of improvements compared to its predecessor. t low speeds it does emit a hum to warn pedestrians, but it would still cause a couple of frowns from people as they probably had no idea BMW has an X5 hybrid. Whereas the old hybrid X5 had a 9.2 kWh battery, the new one can store more than 2.5 times that, being rated for 24 kWh out of which you can use 21 kWh. So that’s a big hike, even though the physical size of the battery didn’t change that much. Keep the pedal glued to the floor and speed just keeps ticking up. This car picks up speed at an alarming rate. It may be a hybrid, 2.5-ton monster but it can move. 0-62 takes just 5.6 seconds and you’ll go all the way up to 250 km/h (155 mph) if you dare." https://www.bmwblog.com/2020/05/18/2020-bmw-x5-xdrive45e-review/ HYUNDAI MOTOR’S EVS A POPULAR CHOICE IN POLICE FLEETS AROUND EUROPE "A growing number of police forces around Europe are turning to Hyundai EVs to use in their fleets. Amid growing concerns about inner-city air pollution, zero-emission vehicles such as battery electric (BEV) and fuel cell electric (FCEV) vehicles present an attractive solution for police officers’ mobility needs." says Automotiveworld.com: "Hyundai’s best-selling all-electric SUV Kona Electric is a popular choice for police forces in countries like Switzerland, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom. A year ago, the police force of the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland added 13 Kona Electric models to their fleet – five as police cars and eight as civilian vehicles. In the Netherlands, police forces in Amsterdam, East Netherlands and Central Netherlands are also testing Kona Electric’s suitability as a police cruiser. Its long driving range and fast charging make it an attractive choice for police use. Kona Electrics can be found in the police fleets in Valencia, Spain, in both the 39 kWh and 64 kWh editions. And in the U.K., Sussex Police and North Wales Police already have one Kona Electric each in their fleets. Additionally, Hampshire Police have ordered nine Kona Electric models for their fleet, which will be delivered early next month." https://www.automotiveworld.com/news-releases/hyundai-motors-evs-a-popular-choice-in-police-fleets-around-europe/ KIA E-NIRO VS KIA SOUL EV "Now, though, there's an all-new Soul EV, which uses the same 64kWh battery and 201bhp electric motor as its e-Niro sibling. And that raises an important question if you like the idea of a fully electric family SUV: which one is better?" asks WhatCar? "If the moment does take you, you can hustle both cars down a country road at a reasonable lick, but we’d describe their handling as tidy rather than fun. Of the two, it's the e-Niro that's more agile, because it leans less than the taller, marginally more top-heavy-feeling Soul, plus its steering reacts more naturally; the Soul's is quicker but not as progressively weighted, and that takes a bit of getting used to." https://www.whatcar.com/news/kia-e-niro-vs-kia-soul-ev/n21450 MITSUBISHI EXTENDS 10,000 FREE ELECTRIC MILES OFFER ON OUTLANDER PHEV "Mitsubishi Motors in the UK has extended its 10,000 Free Green Miles offer for Outlander PHEV buyers until September. Offered in partnership with OVO Energy, the incentive provides drivers of the plug-in hybrid SUV with 10,000 miles worth of free electricity." according to AM Online "Customers will receive a £20.40 credit in their OVO account each month, for 24 months. The deal also includes Polar Plus membership, so Outlander PHEV drivers can charge away from home for free." https://www.am-online.com/news/car-manufacturer-news/2020/05/19/mitsubishi-offers-10-000-free-electric-miles-with-outlander-phev WITH ELECTRIC VEHICLES, BRAND REPUTATION IS NOT A SURE THING "When the topic turns to brand reputation and electric vehicles, the case seems easy enough. Zero emission cars make an important contribution to decarbonization, and that reflects nicely on the auto companies who produce them. However, even the simplest of brand calculations can take an unexpected turn when politics are involved." writes TriplePundit: "Officials in Alameda County, California, had been working with Tesla on a May 18 reopening plan for its Fremont facility, but Musk launched a ferocious attack on Twitter demanding an earlier opening. The result was a blinding blitz of free publicity, during which Musk restarted his factory in Fremont, California days before Ford and GM were set to open. If the idea was to re-assert Tesla’s image as a maverick bucking the entrenched industry tide and bureaucrats alike, Musk certainly succeeded on that score. Last week the president tweeted his approval of Musk’s tactics over the Fremont opening, writing that “California should let Tesla & @elonmusk open the plant, NOW. It can be done Fast & Safely!” If things continue in this vein, it seems that Musk may accomplish the seemingly impossible task of turning Trump voters into Tesla buyers." https://www.triplepundit.com/story/2020/electric-vehicles-brand-reputation-not-sure-thing/120316 QUESTION OF THE WEEK Should Dyson have continued to make a £150,000 EV, or should we only make EVs realistic? A Police Inspector serving with Sussex Police, in the UK. Inspector Bartlett has over 20 years of Operational Policing experience. Living with Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), diagnosed in 2017, a condition she did not know much about or understand until she discovered she’d lived with it all of her life! Seeking the right support to manage it has been transformative. Seeking to raise greater awareness of ADHD, she is working with others in efforts to de-stigmatize the condition. Currently part of the Advisory Group to the All Party Parliamentary Group on ADHD, she is the lead of a working group within her home Force that’s seeking to improve awareness of all Neurodiverse Conditions; doing so with the express wish to secure improved policing outcomes for those who are Neurodiverse and better employment outcomes for Neurodiverse Officers and Staff within the Force. Nationally she is the Lead for ADHD within the National Autism Policing Association; a national Officer and Staff support network. Whilst it was set up in relation to Autism, it now covers all Neurodiverse conditions. Today we talk about how being diagnosed has changed her life and the life of her children, what she is learning, and things to think about as we continue to change the conversation about all things Neurodiverse. Enjoy! In this episode Peter & Inspector Bartlett discuss: 0:57- Intro & welcome Inspector Kaj Bartlett! 2:37- You were diagnosed in 2017. Drunken domestic violence in Worthing West Sussex. Robert Trigg played the dating game but was the date you did not want. Charming company when sober but a violent jealous drunk. Robert killed two of his girlfriends claiming they had died accidentally when he rolled on them while asleep. Sussex Police accepted his story but his second victims parents did not and spent their savings on bringing Trigg to justice despite Sussex Police telling them nothing was wrong. A sad story but let us acknowledge Peter and Elizabeth Skelton of Worthing for fighting for justice.

This is Part One of one of the most popular documentaries broadcast in the Radio Netherlands Media Network programme in 1993, looking at UK black propaganda during the Second World War. In 2019 we might call it deliberate "fake news". This programme features an interview with the late Harold Robin, the Foreign & Commonwealth broadcast engineer who put a number of "fake" resistance stations on the air from a transmitter site not far from Bletchley Park. I was glad to see that they haven't forgotten the role of these broadcasts - it's mentioned in the exhibition at Bletchley. The second part of this 30 minute documentary can be found (see March 22nd 2010). The second part deals more with the Aspidistra transmitter built very near Crowborough, Sussex and still used by Sussex Police as a training ground. Little known fact is that it was also used a for an episode of BBC's Dr Who. The only remaining parts of the Aspi 1 transmitter were hanging in the entrance hall of the Babcock transmitter site at Ordfordness, Suffolk. That site was used until March 27th 2011 for transmission of BBC programmes on 648 kHz towards Western Europe.
