Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

There is a little window, in the attic of a Dalmatian villa from the early middle ages, overlooking the dreamy cascade landscape of downtown Dubrovnik. It's early June, 8 am. A melody of old Mediterranean terracotta roofs plunging into each other is nursing a soft morning light. The polyphony of ages embedded in the stone makes the town glow from its neutron core. No corners are mislaid, and the fortress is keeping us safe. The window is slightly recessed, almost on the corner with Stradun, and a person with fine jumping skills could easily reach the roof of the church across the narrow street. It's Sunday, and the bells from the various towers across town are spilling their gongs. I needed to sleep a bit more. But the grinding machinery of tourism has its own agenda. Savagely squeaking swallows and the morning congregations of seagulls sound like a pastorale compared to the town's growling bowels. Air conditioning units, pumps, kitchen ventilation, garbage trucks, delivery vehicles, wheels, and trolleys of all sorts. I could not help but be fascinated by how a landscape of such beaming beauty can exist in this hideous soundscape. In all of its ugliness, the soundscape of Dubrovnik still hides so much contemporaneity. The large ventilation unit drones are textural and multiphonic. Anarchy in the town's electrical grid is constantly buzzing from nooks and crevices like some robo-brute. Sounds of the wagons for garbage collection, and the rivers of inbound and outbound suitcases are bouncing over the stone streets like a constant percussive development. I enjoyed it a lot. But perhaps we should give it a second thought. The noise in which certain Mediterranean architectural marvels are soaked due to uncontrolled mass tourism is a “silent” killer. Of the environment, and of the local culture and dignity. UNESCO listing: Old City of Dubrovnik Recorded by Manja Ristic. Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"The first thing that stood out to me about this field recording is that there is no real melodic information. It's all street noise, most of it not of clearly recognisable origin.  "Even though Dubrovnik is 4,700 miles away from where I live, in another country on another continent across an ocean, the soundscape is very familiar to me. Garbage trucks and ventilation units all speak the same language.  "In her notes on the recording, Ristić describes the noisy Dubrovnik morning with richly evocative phrases like: “textural and multiphonic”; “grinding machinery”; “the town's growling bowels”; and “a constant percussive development.”  "She writes: “I could not help but be fascinated by how a landscape of such beaming beauty can exist in this hideous soundscape.”  "I kicked around a few ideas but eventually decided to have the work be entirely rhythmic. I wanted to capture that unfocused, only-half-listening state when you become aware of rhythms emerging from the background and soon you begin adding your own.  "Early on I was listening to the recording on headphones while walking home from the train and imagining different rhythmic elements over it. I was walking at a good pace and that set the tempo. It's a long walk and I got so used to that beat that thereafter I couldn't imagine it differently.  "I wanted to use the field recording as the sole sound source but at some point found a royalty-free recording of pealing church bells in Old Town Dubrovnik that was too wonderful to not use*. Aside from that, everything is derived from the field recording.  *[Royalty Free Sound Library: “Croatia Church Bells” recorded by Free to Use Sounds and purchased on Bandcamp] "I created and assembled this piece using Koala Sampler, AUM and AudioShare, splitting tasks between my iPhone and my iPad. Ultimately I didn't use any audio effects or digital manipulation.  "I find inspiration everywhere, but this composition was particularly inspired by Dance of the Knights from Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet, Tom Waits' junkyard jug band sound, and Manja Ristić's previous work with field recordings. When I saw she had contributed a recording for the project, I chose it immediately." Dubrovnik streets reimagined by daddy fall down. As Yugoslavia began to break down, the Balkans conflict began - a series of brutal wars characterised by disputes over territory, identity, and ethnic divisions. In 1991, the Croatian War of Independence started – the first of the major wars. One of its defining moments came in October, when the Yugoslav People's Army advanced on the south of the country leading to the Siege of Dubrovnik. One of the Yugoslav People's Army commanders in the region was Rear Admiral Krsto Đurović, a Montenegrin who had spent his life working in Croatia, married a Croatian and planned to retire to the country. Attacking Dubrovnik was unthinkable for the Rear Admiral, and he promised the city's major: “As long as I am the commander, not a single shell will fall on Dubrovnik."Shortly afterwards he was killed in a suspicious helicopter crash – his superiors claimed he was shot down, but there were no opposition forces in the area, and Croatian officials denied any part in the crash. There was never an autopsy and no military investigation. Soon after, Miodrag Jokic was appointed Đurović's replacement, and a vicious bombing campaign began which would later see Jokic convicted of war crimes. Johnny I'Anson speaks to Montenegrin journalist Veseljko Koprivica, and documentary maker Mladen Ivanovic who say Rear Admiral Đurović's refusal to bomb Dubrovnik may have led to his untimely death. Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from football in Brazil, the history of the ‘Indian Titanic' and the invention of air fryers, to Public Enemy's Fight The Power, subway art and the political crisis in Georgia. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: visionary architect Antoni Gaudi and the design of the Sagrada Familia; Michael Jordan and his bespoke Nike trainers; Princess Diana at the Taj Mahal; and Görel Hanser, manager of legendary Swedish pop band Abba on the influence they've had on the music industry. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the time an Iraqi journalist hurled his shoes at the President of the United States in protest of America's occupation of Iraq; the creation of the Hollywood commercial that changed advertising forever; and the ascent of the first Aboriginal MP.(Photo: Rear Admiral Đurović. Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht - part of Hyatt Hotels, this hotel has a fabulous location on one of the main canals in a great area. The staff was helpful and the room was stylish. The only thing to keep in mind is that it has an open bathroom concept, so it wouldn't be great for families or two friends sharing a room. This is a good option for those who travel with points. Chase is a transfer partner with Hyatt. Tamara visited this hotel in January on her weekend getaway to Amsterdam. Exeter Hotel Reykjavik - this hotel also has an open bathroom format. The location is about a 10-minute walk from the main shopping and sightseeing district. The room rate also included free breakfast and there was a passcode-locked gate for storing luggage. Kim stayed here with her daughter before their Windstar Cruise. Weston Inn Vermont - this is a nice luxury inn in Southern Vermont with top-notch service, a great restaurant, nicely appointed rooms, a spa and fitness center with fantastic yoga classes. This is a perfect romantic getaway. Read Tamara's full review. Inn at Laurel Point, Victoria - Kim talked about this hotel on a recent episode about Victoria, BC. It is located right on the waterfront just a short walk from downtown. They have spacious rooms, nice L'Occitane bath products, soaker tubs, and a fabulous cafe and full-service restaurant on site. Sandestin Hilton, Florida - located along 30A near Destin, Florida, this area has gorgeous white sand beaches and calm water. This is a great hotel for families because one of the towers has 300 rooms that have bunk beds. It is easy to have a family of five in one room and not feel cramped. Read Tamara's full Sandestin Hilton review. White House Hotel, Istanbul - had rooms with three twin beds, making it a great choice for a friend trip to Istanbul. The price was extremely reasonable and it is in the Sultanahmet neighborhood near all the main attractions. Hagia Sofia Mansions, Istanbul - this is a Curio Collection by Hilton Hotel, also in the Sultanahmet neighborhood and it was beautiful. The rooms are spread across multiple buildings and the rooms feel very luxurious. There are two restaurants and the breakfast has so much food. Park Hyatt Istanbul - Macka Palas - the hotel room was fabulous but it is located in a high-end shopping district, which may mean you spend more on cabs getting around the city. Avantgarde Refined Urgup - Cappadocia is a region of towns and this hotel is in the up-and-coming town of Urgup. This is a newly-opened, cave-style hotel with excellent service and food. Meneghetti Wine Hotel, Croatia - this is Tamara's favorite hotel of the year. They stayed in a one-bedroom residence that had a living room, 1.5 baths, loft bedroom, with a private backyard and patio. The hotel is located on a wine estate and has multiple restaurants, two pools, a beach club, spa, and more. Read about Tamara's couples trip to Croatia. fWotD Episode 2742: Yugoslav destroyer Ljubljana Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 6 November 2024 is Yugoslav destroyer Ljubljana.Ljubljana (Serbo-Croatian pronunciation: [ʎubˈʎana]; Cyrillic: Љубљана) was the third and last Beograd-class destroyer built for the Royal Yugoslav Navy (Serbo-Croatian: Kraljevska mornarica, Краљевска морнарица; КМ) in the late 1930s, and designed to operate as part of a division led by the flotilla leader Dubrovnik. She entered KM service in November 1939, was armed with a main battery of four Škoda 120 mm (4.7 in) guns in superfiring single mounts – two forward and two aft of the superstructure – and she had a practical top speed of 35 knots (65 km/h; 40 mph).In 1940, Ljubljana ran aground on a reef off the Yugoslav port of Šibenik and sank due to the serious damage caused to her hull. After considerable effort she was refloated and then towed to the naval arsenal at Tivat in the Bay of Kotor for repairs. This incident resulted in her gaining a reputation as an "unlucky ship" with Yugoslav sailors. Yugoslavia entered World War II when the German-led Axis powers invaded in April 1941, and Ljubljana – still under repair – was captured by the Italians. After repairs and refitting, including replacement of her anti-aircraft armament, she saw service from November 1942 with the Royal Italian Navy under the name Lubiana, mainly as a convoy escort on routes between Italy and Greece and Italy and Tunisia. She was lost on 1 April 1943, when a navigational error was made in poor visibility off the Tunisian coast. She ran aground and was stranded and then abandoned due to heavy seas, and was declared a total loss. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 14:13 UTC on Friday, 8 November 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Yugoslav destroyer Ljubljana on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Olivia.

Gary D. McGugan has always enjoyed reading and storytelling, but for more than forty years, he was deeply embedded in the corporate world. Anyone who has operated at a senior level within a large company knows there's little time for serious writing, and it took retirement from that world to pursue a new passion. His first book was a work of non-fiction, co-authored with his friend Jeff Allen. That positive experience demonstrated that while writing a book is undeniably challenging, it's not insurmountable. McGugan's life experiences now form the foundation for entertaining suspense thrillers, set against the backdrop of a large, multinational corporation and woven with intrigue. Since his debut novel in 2016, Three Weeks Less a Day, he has released a new book each year, with his eighth, When Power Fails, now available. His corporate career offered a wealth of insight into a wide range of industries and situations. He worked in supermarkets, sold appliances, distributed motorcycles, launched an automobile dealer network, and provided financing and consulting to help businesses grow. Each industry had its unique culture and character, yet all were units of large corporations with operations around the world. Travel has always been a significant part of his career. Before starting the automobile business for Suzuki Motor Company's Canadian subsidiary, he had the pleasure of visiting nearly every city, town, village, and hamlet in Canada while leading sales and marketing for its motorcycle division. A role with an ITT subsidiary took him to most U.S. states. Living and working in Germany for several years while creating a new business unit for Deutsche Bank gave him the opportunity to visit all EU countries, and later, responsibilities with a GE Capital subsidiary allowed him to explore various countries in Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. Every trip was a learning experience. In those days, it was essential to study business practices and cultures before each trip. Each day spent in a new country yielded valuable insights into its people, culture, laws, and unique qualities. Today, McGugan is a member and former Co-Chair of the Writers' Community of York Region, a vibrant group of writers from all genres supporting each other and honing their craft. With over 100 members, the group welcomes writers from the region and beyond, with many virtual events that make it easy to participate and benefit from both the community and the expertise of guest presenters. Experts often say writers should focus on what they know best. For McGugan, those subjects are business, travel, and people. As an author, he aims to share his experiences, insights, and perspectives through suspense stories crafted to entertain readers around the world—one reader at a time. To learn more about Gary D. McGugan and his work, visit: https://www.garydmcguganbooks.com/  TOPICS OF CONVERSATION About "When Power Fails" and the inspiration behind the story Corporate power clashes with organized crime. Real-world corporate insights inspire plot. Suzanne's complex leadership and relationships. Global settings enhance story's authenticity. Cybersecurity threats heighten digital tension. Ethics and trust drive corporate drama. What's next for Gary D. McGugan? WHEN POWER FAILS Suzanne Simpson thinks she has pulled off the biggest acquisition of her career, catapulting Multima Corporation into the upper echelons of international business. But did she? Will her AAA-rated company get the $6 Billion loan it desperately needs? And why did strangers flee from her mountain home in the darkness of night only days after she signed the deal? When Power Fails pits a powerful woman leading a successful global supermarket chain against nefarious forces that seek to ravage both the company's resources and its reputation. From high-stakes borrowing to threats of crippling cyber security attacks, this story of human strengths and vulnerabilities sweeps across the globe like a violent tornado sucking in people, corporations and governments. In vibrant cities like Singapore, San Francisco and Atlanta, the picturesque Laurentian Mountains of Quebec, and Dubrovnik in Croatia, Suzanne Simpson battles those who seek to destroy her company. If you love Italy and Greece, you are going to love today's destination! Tamara shares her two-week trip with her husband to Croatia. They visited Dubrovnik, Korcula, Hvar, Split, Zadar, and Istria for a mix of relaxation, food, wine, history, and cultural exploration. Croatia is a lovely country to visit because it is very clean and one of the safest countries to visit in the world. Unfortunately, it is also surprisingly expensive. It isn't the "cheaper" Italy. You can see a full Croatia budget breakdown. Istria was less expensive than other parts of the country. Tamara's itinerary included: 3 nights in Dubrovnik at the Rixos Premium 1 night in Korcula at Aminess Hotel Korcula 3 nights in Hvar at the Beach Bay Hvar Hotel 1 night in Zadar at Hotel Bastion 4 nights in Istria at the Hotel Meneghetti You can find her full Croatia itinerary for couples here. It is best to fly into one city and fly out of another. For example, fly into Dubrovnik and out of Zagreb. To get around in the southern Dalmatian region and islands, you can ferry hop to different islands. To visit the northern part of the country, it is best to rent a car. Another option is to take a small ship cruise or yacht charter to explore the coast and islands that way. Moxy Hotels, Marriott's first brand aimed at travelers in their 20s, is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O'Neill takes a look at how Moxy has looked to stay relevant in the marketplace throughout the years.  O'Neill notes that Moxy doesn't subscribe to the commonly held premise in the hotel industry that the room is everything. Moxy's compact rooms have appealed to some Millennials used to cramped urban residences or minimalist lifestyles. In addition, hotel investors and owners have seen the cost advantages of fitting more rooms into smaller footprints.  Moxy was the first Marriott brand without a formal front desk and guests check in at bars. O'Neill writes hotel operators like how Moxy creates bustling social spaces that attract both guests and locals, and that the lively lobbies and bars drive high-profit food and beverage revenue.  Next, Amtrak launched its first major marketing campaign in three years on Tuesday. It's part of the company's effort to convince travelers that trains are a better alternative to planes and cars, writes Global Tourism Reporter Dawit Habtemariam.  The campaign, called “Retrain Travel,” showcases advantages Amtrak now offers: No middle seats. Plenty of legroom. Freedom to walk around.  An Amtrak executive said “Retrain Travel” — which will appear on social media, the radio and other platforms — is part of its efforts to distinguish itself from its competitors, mainly airlines and cars.   Finally, Dubrovnik will launch a “special traffic regime zone” in its UNESCO-listed Old Town starting in 2025. The zone will use a custom mobile app to regulate tour buses and decrease the number of authorized taxis significantly. Tour buses will need to pre-book slots on the city's app to pass through the zone.  Dubrovnik has seen a tourism boom thanks to the popularity of Game of Thrones. Tours based on the hit show have generated more than $24 million in revenue for the city.  Connect with Skift LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/skift/ X: https://twitter.com/skift Facebook: https://facebook.com/skiftnews Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/skiftnews/ WhatsApp: https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaAL375LikgIXmNPYQ0L/ Subscribe to @SkiftNews and never miss an update from the travel industry.

I'm exhausted! Taking a break in beautiful Dubrovnik**Life is too short to worry about stupid things. Have fun, regret nothing and never let anyone bring you down. Due to the bus being delayed, the three hour ride turned into a six hour ride. I arrived in Dubrovnik in the evening and had to find my apartment lugging my suitcases across the old town. I was immediately impressed, though. The old town was complete and I could find an entrance to a 16th century stone wall. Along the way I discovered that they contained the old buildings and churches very well. After I arrived at my apartment, I cooked myself a healthy meal and felt content and got ready for bed. The next day, I woke up to this idyllic harbor view from my window. I also booked a walking tour from Airbnb experience. Kresmir was my guide that day. I met him at the entrance of the old town. I was the only guest. Kresmir ran a farm and airbnb business in the suburbs of Dubrovnik, and occasionally ran guided tours for the tourists in town. He told me many stories about Dubrovnik and we walked around every corner of the old town. I think when you arrive in a new place, hiring a guide could be a very rewarding experience. If I were walking alone by myself, I would miss so many details related to architecture. Some people might think it's not important, however, I would not make a connection quickly with a place where I only stay for a short time. He was very nice. After the guided tour he even invited me to white coffee in a cosy coffee house. It was the right decision to do the tour because after that, it rained for two days in Dubrovnik. It finally cleared up on the day I was leaving for Italy. However, I also regained the strength I needed to keep going. I was ready for my next stop in Italy. Stay tuned...there's much more to come! In the next episode I'll be sharing a story that happened in Italy.

Massimo Masotti ANITA.

From the notes of Kris Saknussemm... Travel becomes Tourism. This Sacred - > Profane style degeneration is hardly an isolated phenomenon—in fact it might seem to be a Deep Algorithm. But I think the progenitors of the Tourism Age can to some extent be forgiven. It's fine to say now that they should've extrapolated—seen ahead to what large-scale, organized, budget-minded transportation of people around the world for the purposes of recreation or information, fulfillment of some kind—what that would mean. What impact. Think of Tahiti and Hawaii, Venice and Dubrovnik. Yellowstone National Park.) The problem is the Education has so much more to do with Tourism than with Travel—and has for several decades. Public Education tried to apply the values of Trade School (standardization, consistency, certification) to a Liberal Arts model…while wholesale abandoning the Trade School and apprenticeship streams. Meanwhile, Liberal Arts succumbed to customer service. Here's the concluding sentence of one of my students' analysis of the essay “The Loss of the Creature” by Walker Percy, which is as much about this theme / crisis as anything can be. “If you don't know the significance of William Faulkner, the story of Robinson Crusoe, the message within A Brave New World, or the man who discovered insulin, it may be very difficult to understand, and Percy's true message may never be revealed to a 21st century student.”
