Colonsay Colonsay is an island in the Inner Hebrides located north of Islay and south of Mull. It is accessible by CalMac ferry from both Islay and Oban! Colonsay is connected to a smaller island, Oronsay, on its southern end by a tidal causeway and is a rugged island where the low-lying dune grassland known as Machair produces an array of native wildflowers such as heather and wild thyme and acts as a haven for birds and insects. Colonsay Wool Growers At the very top of Colonsay lies Balnahard Farm, the home of Colonsay Wool Growers. The farm has been in the same family for generations and currently boasts over 400 locally reared wool sheep of varying Hebridean cross-breeds. The sheared wool is dyed naturally with native flora such as bog myrtle, nettle and moss to produce yarns, knitting kits, and limited edition knitwear. Colonsay Gin Colonsay Gin began in 2016 when husband and wife duo Finlay and Eileen Geekie traded the busy life of Oxfordshire for a fresh start on Colonsay. Inspired by Celtic folklore and a love of true juniper gin, they launched Colonsay Gin. Today, their gin is a nod to the wild beauty of the island and the business contributes to the island's sustainability and future development - drawing in visitors for tours and tasting. Colonsay Black Bees Colonsay and Oronsay have a long history of traditional honey use and bee-keeping. The continued practice of native bee-keeping in small isolated pockets helps to protect and sustain the dwindling Black Bee population under threat from imported non-native honey bees, and the changing climate. The other result of the practice happens to be fragrant honey that contains all the notes of the diverse island flora providing pollen for the bees. In 1941, the SS Politician ran aground off Eriskay in the Scottish Hebrides Islands, carrying 260,000 bottles of whisky. As war rationing gripped Britain, Hebridean islanders saw the wreck as a godsend. Under cover of darkness, they salvaged thousands of bottles, hiding them in caves, haystacks, and peat bogs. A cat-and-mouse game ensued with customs officers who were determined to stop the whisky smuggling.  Dan is joined by Laura Boon-Williams, Lloyd's Register Foundation Senior Curator in Contemporary Maritime at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, who recounts the true story behind the beloved movie Whisky Galore and tells us about the spirit of this Hebridean community during wartime, merchant shipping in WII and why a seemingly endless supply of whiskey wasn't entirely a blessing. You can find out more about Lloyd's Register Foundation's history and its work that supports research, innovation and education to help the global community tackle the most pressing safety and risk challenges. As with many of the other Scottish island communities, Gaelic is the first language for a majority of Harris natives and is a hugely rich and important aspect of Harris' history. It is famed for its breathtaking beaches which no trip to harris would be complete without a visit to.  Isle of Harris Distillery  The Isle of Harris Distillery is one of the most iconic emblems of the island. Scottish Island Adventures - Barra, Vatersay and Eriskay with host Coinneach Macleod, the Hebridean Baker and guest Tony Kearney Barra, Vatersay, & Eriskay As you approach Castlebay with the wonderful Kisimul Castle keeping watch, you'll soon realise that a trip to these islands is a trip into the very heart of Scotland's natural beauty. Long stretches of coastline evoke a rich sense of solitude making a visit to one (or all three) of the islands an ideal way to escape the commotion of city-living. Packed with vibrant history, outdoor activities, and delicious things to eat and drink, Barra, Vatersay, & Eriskay have it all going on despite their modest size.   Vatersay - The Hebridean Way The Hebridean Way officially opened in 2017 and spans 10 islands, 6 causeways, and 2 ferries. It is a magnificent walking and cycling route which takes you all the way from Vatersay, the southernmost inhabited island of the Hebrides all the way up to the Butt of Lewis. Those who undertake it traverse over Atlantic coastlines, rugged hills, and sweeping sandy beaches with plenty of ‘Pit Stops' (official businesses partnered with the Hebridean Way) to help you rest and recover along the way.  Barra Bike Hire  Like many island enterprises, Barra Bike Hire is a small, family run business. It was originally set up in 2013 / 2014 when the family invested in half a dozen hire bikes to provide for guests staying in their self-catering apartment and self-catering holiday let 'across the road'. In those days the availability of hire bikes on the island was patchy at best. Since then they have invested significantly in a fleet of bicycles and they now have a varied and diverse range of bikes to cater for most needs.  Barra - Honesty Boxes  Visit any small community and you will undoubtedly notice an honesty box, or five. Usually filled with fresh goods such as fruits & vegetables, cakes, and eggs, honesty boxes rely on the goodwill of passers by and are a lovely way to experience a taste of the local produce even when the community shops are shut. Barra has a whole host of honesty boxes - some even have a dedicated Facebook page - and are well worth a visit if you're peckish on the island.   Eriskay - Am Politician bar/ Whiskey Galore Am Politician was built over 30 years ago taking its name from the S.S Politician vessel which came onto the rocks of Eriskay in 1941. The story of the S.S Politician - which had over 200,000 bottles of whiskey on-board - inspired countless retellings but was truly immortalised by Alexander MacKendrick's Whiskey Galore!. The Isle's picturesque scenery attracts visitors from all over the world who can take on its many hill walks and engage in all kinds of outdoor activities from Kayaking in the beautiful Lochs to spotting protected wildlife species such as the Sea Eagle or Red Deer.  Skye has a rich, vibrant history as the site of both the MacDonald and MacLeod Clan castles, as well as having played a role in the heavily romanticised Jacobite Rebellion led by Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745. Today, the island has a thriving culture scene with plenty of art to take in as well as lots of restaurants, bars, and distilleries to show off the best of Scottish cuisine.  SkyeSkins  SkyeSkins was originally founded by a couple, Clive and Lydia, forty years ago in response to local farmers who would leave their sheep skins to waste. In the time that has passed, SkySkins has become a tanner, maker, and supplier of quality sheepskins, home furnishings, and sustainable clothing. You can visit their tannery and showroom in Waternish as well as a variety of other attractions including a seasonal Yurt cafe, and a boutique shop in Skye's capital Portree.  Cafe Cuil  The story of Cafe Cuil began in Hackney, East London, in 2019 when Isle of Skye native Clare Coghill first opened her Hebridean-inspired cafe. After returning to her homeland, Coghill brought Cafe Cuil with her to Calbost, a town on the west-side of the Island. The cafe uses locally sourced, seasonal produce to create its own spin on brunch and lunch.  Ellis O'Connor Ellis O'Connor is a Scottish artist specialising in contemporary landscape drawings and paintings. She produces most of her work on-site which allows her to incorporate the environment and extreme weather into the art as it is created. As well as using traditional mediums such as oil paints, O'Connor's landscape works have featured natural substances such as sand or dried seaweed to bring in elements of the natural world. Scottish Island Adventures - Lewis - with host Coinneach Macleod, the Hebridean Baker and guest Cathy MacDonald From the neat Victorian homes lining the streets of Stornoway in the east, to the stretching white sands of Bosta on Great Bernera in the west, where the clear Atlantic waters sound the evocative toll of the Time and Tide Bell as a reminder of the link between us and the elements, Lewis is an island of exciting contrasts and diverse experiences and the largest of the Outer Hebrides.  Gearrannan Blackhouse Village  The Blackhouse Village is at once a site of great historical fascination as well as a one of a kind self-catering accommodation. The village is one of the best preserved monuments of the island's crofting traditions and was still inhabited by locals in the 1970s. With a visitors site/lodgings, cafe serving fresh food and located a stone's throw from the Callanish Standing Stones, Gearrannan Blackhouse has easily earned its place among the top attractions on Lewis.  Wild Swimming The benefits of wild swimming are bountiful and well-documented with more and more people taking taking advantage of stunning waters of the Atlantic ocean, networks like the Hebridean Sea Swimmers allow people of all abilities to discover the joys of the open water ‘whether they want to swim for 5 minutes or 5 miles'.  Uig Sands Restaurant With a stunning vista of Uig beach and mouth watering dishes like Hebridean sea chowder with seaweed butter on the menu, Uig Sands is a culinary experience not to be missed. Alongside the restaurant, self-catering rooms are available to book. The building's modern design with glorious sea-front windows was partly financed by the Scottish government to help create jobs and serve the growing needs of Lewis' tourism trade.  Thank you for listening to the Caledonian MacBrayne podcast. Some are benign, many are malevolent and there are others who live a parallel existence with humankind, but whose paths rarely cross. Many of these entities live in hidden kingdoms and palaces under the seas. At times they are associated with islands that humans cannot see and the sunken cities that are said to exist beneath the waves off our Celtic coasts. One such island is the magical vanishing island of Hildaland in the seas around Orkney, the group of islands situated off the north coast of Scotland.

There's a warning of welfare problems for livestock sent to slaughter, as the supply of carbon dioxide - which is used for stunning the animals - is once again drying up. It could lead to issues on farms as a rising number of pigs and poultry can't be sent to the abattoir. Carbon dioxide is a by-product of the manufacture of ammonia - and the UK's last remaining ammonia plant is no longer going to produce it. CF Industries says the cost of operating is too high, so for now it's going to import ammonia instead, and - as the gas is a by-product of ammonia production - it won't be making CO2. This will also have an impact on the supply and price of fertiliser. All this week Farming Today has looking at the causes and consequences of rising food prices. A survey from the Nat West bank reveals that 99 per cent of the 252 farmers they asked say they're facing above inflation price rises on at least one main input - things like energy, fuel, feed or fertiliser. Some are planning to grow less or change what they produce in the coming year to limit their losses. Many had agreed prices with their customers before the rise in energy prices, for instance, and so will be looking for much higher prices next season. We speak to a livestock farmer in Somerset. In 2018 the island of Ulva, which sits off the coast of the Isle of Mull and had a population of just five, was bought by a community group for around £4.5 million. Plans to restore the housing on the island are well under way and the population has doubled to ten. But now the island's farmland has to be brought back to life, too. We hear from the man tasked with doing just that. You can hear the full story on On Your Farm on BBC Sounds. Presented by Charlotte Smith Produced by Sally Challoner

Retreats with Hilary Rowland Have you ever been on a retreat? Hilary Rowland provides residential retreats. Did you see her recent LinkedIn post? She states, "Are You Contemplating a Strategy Away Day? Don't!". These away days are awful. They are crammed full of PowerPoint presentations. Then someone tries desperately to herd people in one direction. A written plan is then agreed upon. Which, of course, no one looks at again. What Was That Moment When The Penny Dropped About Retreats? http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Hilary-Rowland-CEO-Reaction.mp4 Hilary ran CEO retreats over a number of years. She thought they need to put more 'content' or value into the first afternoon, rather than allowing FREE time. The CEOs resented it. Because they knew they were going to have that time to think. How often is that available for people? Previous to her current business, Next Chapter Retreats Hilary was a Chair of Vistage. As part of the package, executives got from Vistage, there was a 2-day annual retreat. Retreat Secret Sauce? Graham asked whether there was a secret sauce to retreats? Hilary said yes, people learn much more in small groups. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Hilary-Rowland-Retreat-Secret-Sauce.mp4 Hilary's philosophy is to give attendees as much time as they need. They do offer structured activities. These activities get people to reflect. Or, people are asked questions that they haven't thought about for a long time. They use the Japanese concept of "ikigai", which means "a reason for being". This helps people connect to their PURPOSE. What they are good at, what they love and what matters to them. Who Attends Retreats? http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Hilary-Rowland-Whos-Attending.mp4 At Vistage, it was nearly all men. But, with Next Chapter Retreats, Hilary finds there is no difference one way or another. Why Do People Attend? http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Hilary-Rowland-Why-Do-People-Attend.mp4 How Should Graham's Charity Spend Time on Their Away Day? So much is lost when you only talk to each other on a screen. Company culture is destroyed bit by bit. Retreats offer space and time. If the CEO management team are not connected, how can they motivate their staff? http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Hilary-Rowland-Exercise.mp4   Hilary Discourages Emails and Phone Calls on Her Retreats It is part of the contract she has with people. Attendees are delighted and relieved not to have to take calls and emails. It is possible to do this. Graham referenced the podcast with Marcey Rader, Episode 301. Marcey talks about doing away with notifications. That's because your precious time is hijacked by someone else's agenda. Hilary has experienced religious retreats. She says the whole idea about purpose is religious. Hilary goes to the Scottish Island of Iona, which is a deeply spiritual place. Not surprisingly, Hilary gets plenty of very positive testimonials, like these that were featured on her website: It's fun at the Retreat! Meantime, at Hilary's retreats, there is loads of good food and red wine. The social side of going away is very important. Amongst other things, they play games. Like, 2 truths one lie. Here's one for Graham Firstly, Graham once lost 5 stones in weight in 5 months. Secondly, he played the drums in a bar on Bourbon Street, New Orleans. Thirdly, Graham once scored against a team of ex Leeds United footballers. One of those is a lie. Two are truths. You decide!! Would you like to own your own private Scottish Island? In this episode, I'll talk about a small undeveloped island that's recently come up for sale. Transcript Hello and welcome to this week's episode, I'm your host Jenni and today I'm talking about something that actually causes a lot of pronunciation difficulties for English language learners. Islands or land surrounded by water. Many learners actually pronounce it island for logical reasons as that is how is is pronounced so it seems right to assume that island would be the same, but that's not right, I think the best way to remember is to think of some other words pronounced in the same way: ice cream or idea or even Ireland! Anyway, in Scotland as you may know, we have quite a lot of islands, around 790 in total I think, but not all are inhabited. Some are surrounded by the sea and others are in a loch, Loch, for those of you who don't know is a Scottish word for lake. We refer to most lakes in Scotland as Lochs. Another word that can be tricky to pronounce because of the ch at the end. I must confess I love small islands and take every opportunity to visit one when I can. Island visits are great for escaping from city life, perfect for adventure and completely addictive! Every island has its own character and atmosphere! I can tell you that when travel is safe again, one of the first places I'll be visiting is a Scottish island. So what do you think about owning your own private island? You may think this is only a dream, something available just to the very wealthy but not necessarily. Every so often here in Scotland, one of our little islands is put up for sale. Right now, There's a lovely little island called Deer island for sale through an online auction. The bids started at just £80,000 that's $110,000 and while it will probably sell for much more than that, it sounds like a good deal to me, it seems it is possible to own a little bit of Scottish paradise for the same price as a small house in Glasgow or Edinburgh. . Deer island is a loch island in the West Highlands, it's 11 acres, no one lives there and according to reports it's been owned by the same family for 500 years. It's completely undeveloped with no buildings, no amenities and it's covered in woodland, with this little island you'd be starting from scratch, limited only by your imagination, finances and of course, Council planning regulations! But what an amazing opportunity to create your own little world! You may be wondering how accessible it is? Well, it's around 45 miles from The nearest town, Fort William and not too far from the Glenfinnan Viaduct, made famous more recently in the Harry Potter movies. A nearby island has self catering holiday accommodation which is accessible by a 15 minute speedboat ride from the mainland and of course there's wonderful wildlife all around the area, red squirrels, seals and the occasional dolphin! The perfect spot for some peace and quiet. According to some reports, sales of private islands around the world have tripled since the pandemic, I guess it really is the perfect place to isolate, enjoy a bit of solitude or some much valued privacy. What would you do with your own private Scottish island? What happens when you're nearly three years into the middle of a 8,700 mile hike, you've given up your home, you have no money -- and then coronavirus stops the world in its tracks? That was the dilemma facing Christian Lewis when his quest to walk every twist and turn of the British coastline to raise money for charity was suddenly derailed by the arrival of the pandemic.Lewis, from Swansea in South Wales, set off in the summer of 2017, with just $12 in his pocket. Picking up a companion -- a dog named Jet -- along the way, he arrived on the remote Scottish Shetland islands in March just as the UK was placed under restrictions. With no home to go to and only a flimsy tent for protection in one of the most northerly and windswept parts of the country, he could've been in trouble.Instead, thanks to the kindness of complete strangers, he's found himself in arguably one of the best places on the planet to sit out the crisis -- a cottage on a tiny island all to himself."It is just super. I couldn't be in a better place for a lockdown," Lewis tells CNN from Hildasay island. "There's nothing here but a few sheep and an array of birds."One of the Scalloway Islands, Hildasay measures less than half a square mile and has been largely uninhabited since the late 19th century. 'I couldn't be in a better place' Lewis receives deliveries of water from local fisherman called Victor and forages for food. He makes the occasional boat trip to the Shetland mainland for other supplies."To get back to the mainland is only about a half hour by small boat," he says. "But that stretch of sea is not the nicest, so we really have to pick and choose our days when we get back."Lewis began his journey on August 1, 2017 at Llangennith Beach, Swansea, before heading up the west coast towards Scotland. He then took a brief detour to Northern Ireland to return a message in a bottle thrown into the Irish Sea two decades ago, which he found washed up along the Scottish Coast. While there, he decided to walk the coast of Northern Ireland, before returning to Scotland, including Shetland archipelago, which lies in 100 miles north of the mainland, deep in the North Atlantic.Lewis was close to completing the Shetland Islands, which has 300 islands and skerries, of which only 16 are inhabited, when he learned he could go no further because of coronavirus restrictions. While he managed to avoid ongoing news reports about the pandemic on his travels, he'd picked up various bits of information from people he'd encountered while walking. Island life "I knew the lockdown was coming," he explains. "I had to make a real decision. I can't go home, because I have no home to go to."So with the help of some fellow Shetland people, who lent me a boat, I came to the island and started living off the land."I can walk down now, and I'll have a whole plate full of mussels if I want them, so I've got no worries there."Although he was originally staying in a tent, Lewis was later given the keys to an empty house after news that he was camping on the remote island spread to its owners, who were happy to help."It hasn't got electric or gas," he says. "It's just very basic. But it's out of the wind, and it's got a nice fire."We're (he and Jet) going to be here for the foreseeable future."Under the current restrictions, people in the UK are only allowed to leave their homes for significant reasons, such as shopping for basic necessities, to take one form of exercise per day, deal with any medical needs, or provide care or help to a vulnerable person. The UK government also advises to remain "two meters apart from anyone outside of your household," something Lewis need not worry about while being a boat ride away from any form of human contact. While he'd be forgiven for being disappointed his ambitious trek has been put on hold indefinitely, Lewis is taking a laissez-faire attitude to the whole thing, which is how he's approached the walk since the beginning....

How To Burn A Million Quid

Rule 6: Never ask for anyone’s blessing. Finally, having landed on the Isle of Jura, Bill, Jimmy, Gimpo, and one chosen witness check into the Jura hotel carrying two suitcases containing a million quid. They must pass the night before committing the act for which they have come. Burning one million pounds. Can they really go through with it? The final part of the outrageous comedy drama telling the true story of the chart-topping pop duo known as KLF, who, in 1994, burned £1 million in cash on a remote Scottish Island. It was their mission to cause chaos. And they did. How to Burn a Million Quid features Paul Higgins (The Thick of It, Line of Duty) as Bill Drummond, Nicholas Burns (Nathan Barley, The World’s End) as Jimmy Cauty, with Kevin Eldon as Gimpo, Jeremy Stockwell as Ken Campbell and an outstanding cast of multi voice comedy performers. How To Burn A Million Quid

Rule 4: Go it alone. At the height of their success the KLF can do no wrong. But they really want to. News of their forthcoming BRIT Award confirms their status as music industry establishment – exactly the thing they’re fighting against – and so they go in search of an idea so outrageous, so disgusting, that they would succeed in becoming outcast from the industry. At the BRIT Awards ceremony of 1992 they try out their idea… Part four of the outrageous comedy drama telling the true story of the chart-topping pop duo known as KLF, who, in 1994, burned £1 million in cash on a remote Scottish Island. It was their mission to cause chaos. And they did. How To Burn A Million Quid

Rule 5: Know when to walk away. With the last gasp from the now dead sheep, the KLF leave the music industry. They now take their fight against the Illuminati to the art world, and the Turner Prize of 1994. They are about to have the most brilliant idea of all. Or the most stupid. You decide. Part five of the outrageous comedy drama telling the true story of the chart-topping pop duo known as KLF, who, in 1994, burned £1 million in cash on a remote Scottish Island. It was their mission to cause chaos. And they did. How To Burn A Million Quid

Rule 3: Only a madman is absolutely sure. Pop stardom is going well, the KLF are a music industry sensation with a string of hits. An inspired collaboration with country music legend Tammy Wynette takes them to new heights. But is that enough, asks Bill, where’s the meaning? In the North Pole perhaps? Well that’s the conclusion he reaches and so off they go. Really. All this happened. Rule 1. Begin an inner alchemy to transcend the consensual reality tunnel and move from a state of fixation to a condition of mutability. Outrageous comedy drama telling the true story of the chart-topping pop duo known as KLF who, in 1994, burned £1 million in cash on a remote Scottish Island, with only one journalist and their roadie-come-fixer, Gimpo, in attendance. Why? Why would they do that? How To Burn a Million Quid lays the story bare. A comic, surreal and fast moving adventure that sees Bill and Jimmy rise to the very top of the music industry, becoming the biggest selling music act in the UK before crashing out of the industry in spectacular fashion and heading toward the art world with the intention of creating similar mayhem. Inspired by a madcap theatrical genius and a cult novel, they blaze a trail that takes them to Sweden, the North Pole and the Sierra Nevada, via Northampton, before arriving finally on the Isle of Jura, with two suitcases containing a million quid. It was their mission to cause chaos. And they did. A sonic roller coaster featuring Paul Higgins (The Thick of It, Line of Duty) as Bill Drummond, Nicholas Burns (Nathan Barley, The World's End) as Jimmy Cauty, with Kevin Eldon as Gimpo, Jeremy Stockwell as Ken Campbell and an outstanding cast of multi-voice comedy performers. Rule 2: Don’t do anything unless it’s heroic. Bill, Jimmy and Gimpo set off for Sweden in order to persuade Abba to let them sample their music. They’ll be OK with that. Won’t they? Just in case they say no, they’re taking all the records with them so that they can burn the vinyl before the legal deadline. Just in case. Besides, Bill has another plan for how to get onto Top of the Pops. Part two of the outrageous comedy drama telling the true story of the chart-topping pop duo known as KLF, who, in 1994, burned £1 million in cash on a remote Scottish Island. It was their mission to cause chaos. And they did. In this episode Ade's been trapped on a remote Scottish Island, Graeme's roped his better half into being a portrait model for him on a cold miserable day, and Ade has finally, grudgingly bought a tripod. All this and some disappointing negatives!

Poet Kenneth Steven writes on Raasay, an island close to Skye once home to the great Gaelic bard Sorley MacLean. Kenneth describes the history of this 'fiercely traditional island', with its continuing belief in the sanctity of the Sabbath Day - Sunday. 'This was prevalent until recently all across the Highlands and islands; it has faded with increasing secularisation, but on Raasay (as in other Outer Hebridean islands in particular) it remains firm'.Kenneth looks at two famous sons of Raasay, bot born in 1911. Calum MacLeod is famous for building a road across the island when requests for its construction has fallen on deaf ears. 'Over a period of about ten years he constructed one and three quarter miles of road, using little more than a shovel, pick and wheelbarrow.'But his main interest is in the work of Sorley Maclean, Gaelic poet. 'Gaelic was his mother tongue; the language of the heart, and the poetry he wrote was out of the burning fires of the heart. This was no gentle poetry. Sorley Maclean's people were from Raasay and Skye and the memory of their struggle for justice and for land beat within him like a living drum.'Written and read by Kenneth StevenProducer Mark Rickards

Kenneth Steven looks at Rum, a wild and windswept Hebridean island, and responds to its landscape in poetry. Rum is the largest of a group making up the 'Small Isles', Rum, Muck, Eigg and Canna, lying west of the fishing port of Mallaig in the Scottish Highlands. 'I don't know a Hebridean island more beautiful to approach. Every time I do I think of it again as a treasure island.' Its remote and rugged beauty attracted an eccentric Victorian industrialist, who bought it and attempted to transform it into his own vision of an island home, complete with a castle. 'The castle itself was built of red sandstone and shaped from the Isle of Arran. Greenhouses were brought for the growing of peaches, grapes and nectarines. There were heated pools for turtles and alligators; an aviary was constructed for birds of paradise and humming birds.'It was not to last, and Kenneth looks at what's left of the island fantasy today, leaving him with a profound sense of sadness.Written and read by Kenneth StevenProducer Mark Rickards

Poet Kenneth Steven writes on Hoy, the only place of cliffs and mountains in the archipelago of the Orkney islands Kenneth describes the beauty of the Orkney islands as seen in their greenness and lushness, in contrast to the harsher landscape of the north-east corner of Scotland just to their south. 'These islands seem almost cut out of some richly endowed agricultural shore far to the south and planted in the sea just to the top right of Scotland'. But Hoy is different, the island has a wildness not found elsewhere in the islands. Kenneth reflects on the relationship between writer George Mackay Brown and the composer Peter Maxwell Davies, who died in 2016. They had met and Peter Maxwell Davies made the decision to live on Hoy in its rugged yet peaceful landscape. 'His falling in love with Hoy was not just a passing whim. He had to win his right to the place in almost fairy-tale like terms. But the peace he had so craved was all about him and his was able to compose; the music that flowed through him could be released at last.'Written and read by Kenneth Steven Producer Mark Rickards

Poet Kenneth Steven has a special relationship with the small Hebridean island of Iona, set in the Atlantic off the west coast of Scotland. It was the place of learning and worship in the 6th century, when St Columba brought Christianity from Ireland and set up a monastery, and today it still has a spiritual quality for many of its visitors. Kenneth has visited since he was a child and collected stones polished by the sea along its beaches. Today he reflects on Iona's place as a 'meeting of the sea roads, which has had such a profound impact on so many, and has done for longer than we can ever know'. '..That is why I keep returning, thirsty, to this place That is older than my understanding, Younger than my broken spirit.'Written and read by Kenneth Steven Producer Mark Rickards
