Life has meaning. Yours. Mine. Everyone’s. That’s it! That’s my big audacious claim. Now, some may claim to know what that meaning is. But my suspicion? They’re making it up. Because we all are. And that, is a very good thing. Us humans, we are meaning making machines. Pattern recognizers. Maybe even pattern inventors. We are storytellers. And the stories we receive and tell, they shape us. They help us create and discover our meaning. So where do we get these stories? Some might argue that we only create meaning from our most established teachers: Our family of origin, our culture, our greatest thinkers, and our sacred texts and traditions. And we can certainly create meaning from these. But, we also discover meaning through unexpected and commonly overlooked means: Watching our children play with abandon. Losing ourself in the well chosen words of our favorite song or poem. By noticing how a moment of solitude can both embrace us and unnerve us. If we are paying enough attention, each moment, from the mundane to the sublime can be our teacher. We can make Something From Everything. So how do we make meaning in our lives? How do we tell a better story? Well that’s what this podcast is all about. Reflections on the events and ideas surrounding us to discover meaning and connections. Welcome to Something From Everything.

I absolutely love these conversations, and I hope you do too. You can listen at our website, or wherever you get this podcast. https://navigating-a-resurrection.pinecast.co I hope that you can see when certainty is being peddled. I hope you can see the desire for certainty for the trap that it is. I hope that you are uncertain, but alive, flexible, and filled with joy (and occasionally terror)... but mostly joy. May you pay attention, and may you play, in all the areas of life that mean the most. As we make something, from everything.

Episode Notes Drawing on the poem "The Peace of Wild Things" by Wendell Berry, Matt reflects on a recent encounter with the seemingly otherworldly, 'super' natural. On Being Productions has a beautiful production of this poem, read by Berry himself and set to music and animation. You can find it here: https://onbeing.org/poetry/the-peace-of-wild-things/ The story of Jacob's vision is found in the book of Genesis, chapter 28, starting at verse 10. The music closing out this post is Kai Engels' Labernum. It is found on his album "Chapter Four: Fall", and licenced under creative commons, attribution 4.0. You can find his music at https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Kai_Engel You can find written transcripts of this post, and all my writings (most of which are not on the podcast) at www.somethingfromeverything.com. The one where Matt goes chasing rainbows (but never waterfalls!) and reflects on Peter Rollins' concept of the lack (which he adapts from the work of Arthur Schopenhauer) I got to see Peter Rollins perform this live in Seattle with Rob Bell during the "Holy Shift" tour. It was fantastic. You can find his whole 20 (ish) minute performance here: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/holy-shift-tour-the-wholly-other-inner-dimension/id1296444316?i=1000430582627 Also, aren't you glad I didn't try to imitate his accent? Yes. I accidentally said "spurns" instead of spurs. Yes, it means the opposite. Kai Engel makes beautiful music, a lot of which is both free to download, and is available for content creators to share under Creative Commons license. I'm so grateful for this. Episode Notes Thich Nhat Hanh argues that we can be mindful about every thing that we do. In this episode, Matt reflects on the role of pain in increasing our mindfulness. A brief overview of Thich Nhat Hanh's teaching and life can be found at https://plumvillage.org/about/thich-nhat-hanh/. Opening music is "Memory" by the band, Creo. Under Creative Commons. Episode Notes Inspired by a very particular (but unfortunately not rare!) run in with an anti-masker at the grocery store. This episode looks at the common forces that are currently squeezing all of us during this pandemic. And it looks to the greater squeeze ahead. Opening music is "Memory" by the band, Creo. Closing music is "Dazed" by the band Airtone. Under Creative Commons. Found on https://freemusicarchive.org/ This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
Episode Notes I owe the whole notion of "The Territory We Have Already Entered" to David Whyte, and his conversation with Krista Tippett (an On Being podcast, link below). From this comes the idea that any space we find ourselves in (even this most mundane and familiar) is full of complexity and possibility. I hope you enjoy it. https://onbeing.org/programs/david-whyte-the-conversational-nature-of-reality/ This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
