Meet the Wild Things: Children's Books for Conservation Guests Hayley and John Rocco, Children's Author and Illustrator Team, Co-founders of Children's Book Creators for Conservation (CBCC) One million species are threatened with extinction, and the number one cause is habitat loss. We have the knowledge and the ability to reverse this trend by 1) protecting important areas from destruction, 2) restoring habitats that have been lost, and 3) rewilding restored habitats. Rewilding means reintroducing wild species in a way that brings back ecological balance. Guests Hayley and John Rocco are the co-founders of Children's Book Creators for Conservation (CBCC), a collective of children's book authors and illustrators who support conservation efforts with the mission to partner with organizations like Wild Tomorrow. Members of this collective use their creative storytelling skills to amplify the work of conservationists and make lasting connections with young readers that cultivate a climate of hope. Their stories empower children with the knowledge, inspiration and confidence they need to be change makers and future leaders. Hayley Rocco is the author of multiple books for young readers including Wild Places: The Life of Naturalist David Attenborough and the Meet the Wild Things series about endangered animals which she and her husband, John Rocco, created together. An ambassador for Wild Tomorrow, a nonprofit focused on conservation and rewilding South Africa, Hayley travels the world armed with a pen, a journal, and her camera, discovering stories of wild things and wild places. John Rocco is the #1 New York Times bestselling author and illustrator of many acclaimed books for children, including Blackout, the recipient of a Caldecott Honor, and How We Got to the Moon, which received a Sibert Honor and was longlisted for the National Book Award. John, also an ambassador for Wild Tomorrow, ventures with Hayley into the wild in search of stories they can bring back and share with readers everywhere. John and Hayley live in Rhode Island in an old house tucked in the woods near the sea. Greg Morse | A house with little children is often a messy house, an untidy house, a house that falls short of a mother's desires. But oh, what abundance such a house holds.
In this week's message, we enter the wilderness—the place where things fall apart, where life feels uncertain, and where wild things roar. But as Mark 1:1–5 reminds us, the good news begins in the wild. It's in that uncomfortable space where John the Baptist appears, calling people to repent, confess, and prepare the way of the Lord. Drawing parallels to Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are, this sermon reflects on how God often does God's best work in the very places we'd rather avoid. The wilderness teaches us to cry for the world, to repent from our false comforts, and to hope that if God meets us in the wild, those places won't be wild forever.

Some conversations invite us to slow down. To breathe differently. To step out of the rush of our lives and into the quieter places we often avoid — the ones where grief, memory, and healing wait patiently for us to catch up. Today's episode is one of those conversations. My guest, Barbara Wansbrough, didn't set out to write a book about grief. She set out to take a walk — one that eventually led her through forests, along coastlines, and into the tender terrain of losing her sister. The result is Wild Things: A Geography of Grief, a breathtaking collection of letters that reads like both a love story and a survival guide. In this episode, Barbara shows us that healing doesn't always arrive with dramatic breakthroughs. Sometimes it shows up in the rhythm of your strides, the feel of wind on your face, or the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other when the heart feels heavy. If you've ever found yourself in a season where life asks you to let go, to begin again, or to navigate a loss with no clear map — consider this your invitation. Let's step into the wild and see what it has to teach us. Come on in. Check out this amazing book! Wild Things: A Geography of Grief by Barbara Wansbrough In This Episode, You'll Also Learn… How walking can gently re-pattern grief in the body, creating space for clarity, calm, and emotional release. Why small, intentional rituals can soothe the soul more effectively than food, distraction, or "pushing through." How embracing the "wild" parts of grief can lead to unexpected strength, softness, and a deeper sense of belonging in your own life. Links Mentioned in the Episode: Check out this amazing book! Keeping secrets...In the shadows... Or something more descriptive/funny/entertaining, etc. This film is the very definition of "twisty-turny", full of characters waiting to double-cross or double-cross those double-crossers. Maybe the twistiest, turniest film we've ever covered. More so than WILD THINGS. A very serious film about the Dutch Resistance fighters during the Second World War made by Paul Verhoeven.BLACK BOOK marked his departure from Hollywood and a return to Holland since making THE FOURTH MAN. This is a very accomplished film by a very accomplished filmmaker and is well worth a watch or two to get all the little details he put in there. Sit back and strap in for a 2.5-hour ride (don't worry, this episode is only 50 minutes).
Jared checks in from Kansas City for Ticked Off Tuesday! He kicks off with a classic traveler's nightmare: thinking your phone's been charging all night, only to wake up to 3 percent. He suggests a new PTO policy that should cover “unplugged Mondays.” The Kansas City BBQ debate rages as everyone says you went to the wrong spot, stale late-show movie popcorn deserves jail, and he nominates Cleveland to rebrand as the Wild Things because Guardians has all the pizzazz of a bridge statue. Tech gripes abound, too, including a microwave clock that loses two minutes a month, and he asks Samsung to blink twice if it needs help. Rounding it out, Jared rails against checkout line hoverers who pile items onto your conveyor and tee box interlopers who park carts in your backswing. Got a grievance of your own? “If we believe that God made the world, then the world is important as a revelation of God, as a sacred text. If we believe that Jesus is the Son of God, then we must believe that he is the Son of God made flesh, made a human being—and therefore that the life of the human body in this world is important.” — Sex, Economy, Freedom & Community by Wendell BerryTake a moment to breathe. Slow your pace.Another breath.Perhaps another. Allow your soul to catch up with your life—even in this very moment.Another breath.Enjoy this brilliant poem by Wendell Berry, The Peace of Wild Things. Read it as slowly as you are able:“When despair for the world grows in meand I wake in the night at the least soundin fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,I go and lie down where the wood drakerests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.I come into the peace of wild thingswho do not tax their lives with forethoughtof grief. I come into the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind starswaiting with their light. For a timeI rest in the grace of the world, and am free.”The first sacred text given to all of humanity is God's creation itself. In many ways, the created world was intended to be a sacred container for the Kingdom of God—a primary expression of His presence and love. What if, just as the Creator crafted this redemptive backdrop for the story of mankind, you were invited to partner with Him in creating your life as a continually expanding spiritual refuge? A place where you are known, loved, perfectly safe, and deeply nourished—affording you an ever-increasing capacity to engage the battles God invites you to fight on behalf of your own heart and those entrusted to your care?Just as every creature is designed to flourish within a particular habitat, every soul is also meant to thrive in a specific environment. This is our destiny, and this is God's invitation. A soul planted in good soil has little choice but to grow into the full expression of all it was created to become—since before the foundation of the world.Even a cursory immersion in the sacred text of nature reveals a profound truth: the health of any living thing is directly tied to the quality of its habitat. When the environment is whole, life flourishes. When it becomes toxic, life withers.Day by day, decade by decade, we hold far more power than we've believed to shape our lives in ways that increase our joy, confidence, and contentment in daily life with God.It was the prophetic voice of God through Isaiah that offered this invitation:“My people will live in peaceful dwelling places, in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest.” — Isaiah 32:18Make no mistake: this restoration is fiercely opposed. And yet, there is One who is greater. Even now, a perfect invitation is being extended—for you to take the next brave step, the next twenty seconds of courage, to partner with God in restoring a habitat where your soul can truly thrive. What if the restoration of the masculine soul depends on our willingness to humbly embrace the formative power of our context? What would it look like to recover a way of life that positions us to receive the revitalizing power of God's own life?Join me as we explore the power and hope of cultivating a habitat where our souls can flourish. As part of the journey of Becoming a King, this podcast offers a deeper exploration into creating that sacred habitat where this dream can be realized. It's all been prologue. The best is yet to come. For the Kingdom,Morgan & Cherie

Artist and author Maurice Sendak was able to achieve significant and enduring success in art and children's literature during his lifetime. But what secrets did he had to keep from his family, publishers, parents, librarians, and readers as a gay, Jewish man negotiating the field of children's literature? Sendak wrote and illustrated books that nurtured children and adults alike. Winner of the 1964 Caldecott Medal for Where the Wild Things Are, in 1970 Sendak became the first American illustrator to receive the international Hans Christian Anderson Award, given in recognition of his entire body of work. Sendak's work has been the subject of several extensive retrospective art shows at prestigious museums across the country. Sendak lived in Ridgefield, Connecticut with his partner Dr. Eugene Glynn for over 50 years. Spike Jonze's 2009 film Where the Wild Things Are is an ambitious adaptation of Maurice Sendak's classic children's book, but despite its stunning visuals and unique atmosphere, it struggles to capture the warmth and timeless charm of the original story. Billed as a family movie, this fantasy-drama often feels more like an indie art film, leaving many viewers, especially younger audiences, confused, restless, or disappointed.
The gang gets paid $10,000,000 to go topless this week as they review the steamy Floridian mystery thriller, Wild Things. In this episode of Wild Things and Wild Places, Janet, Chris, and Joey from the Muley Fanatic Foundation recap their busy and impactful summer of 2025. The team took part in fawn captures in the Wyoming Range to support ongoing mule deer monitoring efforts, gathering critical data on population health. They also tackled invasive species and habitat restoration through Cheatgrass spraying near Rock Springs and Juniper removal south of town—both essential to preserving quality mule deer habitat. Additional efforts included sagebrush mowing in Kemmer, Wyoming, where the goal was to improve forage conditions by promoting the growth of new, nutritious plants. The group also previewed the upcoming Porcupine Creek project, which will reduce conifer encroachment in Aspen stands through prescribed burns. Janet shared updates on a vegetation study with the Monteith Shop, focusing on mule deer browsing habits in the Big Piney area by analyzing vegetation and fecal samples. The episode wraps up with a look ahead at future restoration work and newly allocated funding...reinforcing the Muley Fanatic Foundation's dedication to conservation and habitat health across Wyoming.
We're gonna sleep in a real pile, unless you invite Bob and Terry! (We promise that sentence makes sense.) Spike Jonze's imaginative, decidedly feelings-heavy take on WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE wasn't for kids (or, necessarily, wide audiences), but it resonated with Millennial viewers. Which one of our panel will cry about it a little? The answer may surprise you! Recommendations: Sean and Robin loved THE NAKED GUN. Kahmeela thinks you should feel free to watch DROP and 28 YEARS LATER. Sean thinks the internet is being way too hard on the new I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER.

Send us a text30 min of free dragging of Aaron Phypers LIVE from the stunning Amalfi Coast, I dive deep into this weeks Reality TV scandals that has everyone talking, starting with Aaron Phypers' messy divorce filing from Denise Richards over Fourth of July and the devastating lawsuit that reveals he allegedly defrauded a cancer patient out of $62,000 at his wellness clinic while promising miracle cures with a "98% success rate." Needless to say, she died. I expose the pattern of questionable relationships this man has with successful women, from his brief marriage to Nicollette Sheridan (complete with mysterious recordings he was court-ordered to delete) to his financial dependency on Denise throughout their six-year marriage. But that's just the beginning – I reveal the most jaw-dropping excerpt from Scheana Shay's upcoming memoir "My Good Side" where she finally opens up about discovering Brock Davies cheated on her while she was pregnant, including the disturbing letter he wrote detailing every sordid aspect of his affair. RHOBH new cast discussions beside Rachel Zoe. Brandi Glanville drops the tea I have been saying for years LOL. Sign up for Nature's newsletter: https://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/newsletter/ Growing up, Kiese Laymon thought of himself as a city kid. But he spent his childhood with a foot in two worlds: his mom's house in the capital city of Jackson, Mississippi and his grandma's house in a rural country town. It wasn't until Kiese left Mississippi that he came to understand that this question of city vs. country meant a lot more. It carries a lot of baggage: the tensions between north and south, tectonic historical forces, and the contradictions of life in Mississippi. In this episode from Outside/In, a podcast where curiosity and the natural world collide, producer Justine Paradis sits down with author Kiese Laymon, for a conversation on this question of country versus city, what that has to do with the history of Black life in this country, and the story of Kiese's first children's picture book, his latest in a lifelong exploration of a complicated love of Mississippi.
