HSE Mid West has spent over €140 million on agency staff since the beginning of 2024. Figures provided to Doonbeg Fianna Fáil Councillor Rita McInerney at the latest HSE Regional Health Forum Midwest meeting have revealed the spend on agency staff came to almost €68 million last year alone. HSE Mid West says agency staff are used "to provide rapid staffing solutions during crises or unexpected surges in demand" as well as "when permanent staff are unavailable due to illness, leave, or vacancies". However, concerns have been raised about the long-term sustainability of such spending, with calls for greater investment in direct recruitment and permanent staffing solutions. Clare FM's Sean Lyons has been speaking with Cllr Rita McInerney, and to discuss what these figures mean for patients, healthcare services and the future of staffing in the region, Alan Morrissey was joined by John Wall, Chairman of HSE Mid West's Patient and Service User Council. This book explains the Church's teaching on gender and sexual morality. But it isn't a list of don'ts; instead, it articulates the beauty of God's understanding of love and what beautiful possibilities there are for those that avail themselves of His love and plan for their lives. Yet this book isn't just a moral guide and explainer; it seeks to give people concrete practical answers to specific and detailed questions about dating, engagement, friendship, and marital struggles. We truly believe this book can revolutionize how Catholics understand love, and we hope it finds its way into the hands of every person.   Visit Alexander's website: https://www.alexanderlengerke.de/   SUBSCRIBE to our channel and never miss an episode of the Ignatius Press Podcast. He joins us today to talk about De Lubac and his critical insight into the rise of constructive atheism. Fr.   "How does the psyche navigate the interplay of impermanence and resilience? In 'Vicissitudes of Transience', Jhuma Basak explores the concept of transience through psychoanalytic, cultural, and philosophical lenses, drawing connections between Japanese and Indian contexts. Through myths like Ajase and cultural forms like Bhatiyali songs, Jhuma Basak illuminates how transience shapes our relationship with loss, desire, and creativity. Bridging Eastern and Western perspectives, this reflection invites us to consider the feminine principle of fluidity as a path to embracing impermanence." This article is part of the book “Psychoanalytic Explorations into the Primal Relationship in Japan and India” (Routledge, 2025), a collaboration between Osamu Kitayama and Jhuma Basak exploring primal relationships in Japan and India through a cross-cultural psychoanalytic lens." But this date also marks the destruction of the one ring in Tolkien's “Lord of the Rings.” So we were joined by a Tolkien scholar, Joseph Pearce, to talk about the author of this great myth and to explain the significance of this date in Middle Earth. Joseph and Ben Eriksen discuss the major influences on Tolkien as both a man and the author and uncover many themes within Tolkien's writings such as hope, eucatastophes, and Catholicism. They also talk about the true meaning of a “myth” which is not a flight from reality, but a flight into reality. Finally, Joseph gives his thoughts on the film adaptations of the “Lord of the Rings,” “the Hobbit,” and other recent film adaptations. So over the past year, we custom milled paper to reduce the size and weight of the Catholic Study Bible without taking out any of the information. The personal sized Catholic Study Bible is the exact same as the original, except it is two pounds lighter and significantly smaller in height, length, and width. The font size has only been reduced by one point as well so it is still very readable. We also partner with TruthGuard to come out with the Catholic Study Bible app so that you can take the Study Bible on the go. If that's not difficult enough, Chris' son, Chris Jr., is struggling to fend off a bad fever, and things are not looking good. Realizing that the party is about to break, Chris decides to head over a promising look rim to see if he can find some food or water. What he does find will change the course of history forever. In this episode, we're going to look at the role of pilgrimage in the story; we'll dive into whether or not foreknowledge can actually help you in the present; and I'll reveal my moments of awe, a look at why we really should get up in the morning. Dr. Peter Kreeft believes that the best argument against God's existence is the problem of pain, and in today's episode he provides spiritual insights into this mystery. Get Your Copy of “Making Sense Out Suffering” here (Book Releases 3/20): https://ignatius.com/making-sense-out-of-suffering-msosp/?searchid=0&search_query=making+sense+of+suffering Suffering afflicts us all; whether you are suffering now or will experience great suffering in the future. Naturally, suffering causes us to question God's love, His providence, and even His existence. But suffering must not cause us to reject God; instead we must wrestle with Him and ultimately unite ourselves with Him. Dr. Peter Kreeft beautifully illustrates this process of wrestling with God in this episode and in his book “Making Sense of Suffering.” Written when he himself was going through great suffering, Dr. Kreeft blends personal experience, spiritual wisdom, and philosophical perspective to reveal the truly Catholic approach to suffering. This book is not written on the mountain top as one who no longer suffers or has all the answers, but from one in the valley of tears who encourages his fellow Christian to look to the Heavens. We highly recommend this book and conversation for all who experience great pain, sadness, or suffering. It will be a true consolation but also a challenge as we place all our trust and hope in God.   SUBSCRIBE to our channel and never miss an episode of the Ignatius Press Podcast. As part of our series on appetites, food and politics, and the need to snack during difficult times, host Ali Muldrow is in conversation with Jen Rubin and Jenny Pressman who spent the last two years on the hunt for the perfect bagel. They talk about their favorite cultural comfort food and their quest to find not just any bagel, but the Great Midwest Bagel, one that has been properly kneaded, fermented, boiled, and baked. Rubin began this quest as a grief project after the loss of her mother, the cultural bearer in her family. The bagel holds a central place in New York Jewish communities, says Rubin, who grew up eating bagels while chatting, or kibitzing, with family and friends. Pressman joined Rubin in the search for bagels that were made like the ones they used to love back in New York City.  Part food-travel, part archival research, and part personal family story, the Great Midwest Bagel Quest is a road trip story without the tragedy of Bonnie and Clyde or Thelma and Louise, just carbo-loading. Food is a manifestation of culture, and Rubin says the Quest has been a way to connect with her Jewish culture but untethered from Israel. Pressman says that their road trips around the Midwest were some of the funniest and seediest experiences she's ever had.  They also debate the role of capers in a bagel spread, how blueberry bagels don't count as traditional bagels, the rise of chain bagel stores and “millenial-pandemic-bagel-bakers,” how people regularly injure themselves when cutting bagels, and the desire for a “cripsy exterior.” Note: This pledge drive interview was edited to remove parts of the show dedicated to station fundraising. We thank our listeners for their generous support. Jenny Pressman is a passionate community activist, fundraiser, and connector. Previously a lawyer and director of a charitable foundation, Jenny is now in her dream role as the Director of Development and Community Partnerships for the UW Odyssey Project, a jumpstart program in the humanities addressing multigenerational poverty through access to education. Jenny is a proud Jewish lesbian mother and the daughter of Holocaust survivors. Over the weekend, Ukraine again faced waves of drone and missile attacks, while European foreign ministers meeting in Brussels struggled to agree a new sanctions package. US-brokered talks in Geneva have stalled, and questions remain about what happens next. Meanwhile, Cabinet Ministers are convening, ahead of a special meeting of European leaders to mark four years since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Therefore, in today's episode, Dr. Jonathan Ciraulo and Andrew Petiprin discuss Fr. Balthasar and how he integrated his scholarly life and his priestly vocation. Dr. Ciraulo points out that Fr. Balthasar never received any formal education in theology beyond his time at the seminar and he sought to remain a student chaplain instead of an academic position. This kept him grounded in his theology and uniquely fit to guide priests and those in the process of discernment. Dr. Ciraulo highlights Fr. Balthasar's humility, his intellectual curiosity, and his openness to God. They also discuss Balthasar's thoughts on priestly celibacy and donatism—the heresy that claims that validity of the sacraments depends on the virtue of the priest.
