This week we’re rewinding to 2020: a year that needs no introduction. Grief, loss, anxiety, chaos – it was heavy. And somehow, the music we featured that year mirrored all those messy, chaotic emotions of helplessness, of isolation, and loneliness - all of which came spilling out uncontrollably. This episode is about taking a pause and taking stock of the tiniest things. The good, the bad, the ugly. Basically, it's a much needed therapy session. Yet, even though the world shut down, we got to record some true gems including our #RunTheWorld Ladies Special and our 200th episode!!! – with our very own “Reserve Bank of Indie” 200-rupee note in circulation (if only it were legal tender…) This is a snapshot of a year we’d rather forget, told through music we can't help but love. PS: This episode features an Intro VO by Head of HR & Admin, and Mother Hen to all at Maed in India, Natasha, who managed to sneak in 10 horse puns in honour of our 10th birthday. Brownie points if you can spot them all! Pirates broadcaster Greg Brown joined the show. Brown was inducted into the Buffalo baseball hall of fame. Greg says he just now heard about Andrew McCutchen's comments, but says there's nothing newsworthy there. McCutchen implied that the Pirates need to spend more to try to win. Brownie says that spending more isn't the clear answer to the problem. Greg also said that he didn't understand the Aroldis Chapman signing last year. He also says that he doesn't think Ben Cherington has done a good enough job.

Isaiah Likely was carted off the field at practice today, John Harbaugh called it a multi-week injury. Greg Newsome was also carted off the field, and his injury is assumed to be bad. The guys disagree with the Ravens being the Super Bowl favorites, according to Fanduel. They think that the Ravens will run into a wall against Kansas City or Buffalo. Pirates Broadcaster Greg Brown joined the show. Greg says that he still thinks that Ben Cherington will make a big trade before the deadline. Brown says it's possible that David Bednar has pitched his last game as a Pirate, but it's also possible that he will remain a Pirate. He also says that Bednar took PNC Park all in after his 100th save. Brownie says that he's confident that Cruz and Skenes will remain Pirates at the deadline. He also says the Pirates should take advantage of desperate teams at the deadline, and that the Pirates need a left fielder. What's the Pirates best deadline move? Poni and Mullsy name JA Happ, Zane Smith as potential answers. Mullsy says that JA Happ should have pitched the Wild Card game against Jake Arrieta. Tony Watson for Oneil Cruz was a great trade, but not good enough to be the best ever. A commenter says that Austin Hedges for bonus pool money should be in contention. Poni says that the Red Sox do not like Mitch Keller. Donny Football Debrief – Poni skipped a field trip to a Yankees game in Little League, and missed a perfect game. Is Ben Roethlisberger a better quarterback all time than Brett Favre? The guys do not think so. Donny thinks Ben is around 12th best all time, while Favre is around the 8th. Poni mentions that Brees gets dinged for playing in a dome, but Favre doesn't get any credit for playing in bad weather. Mullsy says that Favre's last season was statistically better than any season Ben had. Poni says that he is going to bet on the Hall of Fame Game.

I recently came across a photo of myself as a Brownie—standing straight in my uniform, with this tight little smile on my face. I wasn't carefree or joyful. I was trying hard to get it right. Michele Weldon, Boomer, award-winning author, journalist, and emerita faculty member at Northwestern University, joins us to reflect on the deeply personal and cultural shifts we experienced during the pandemic years. Through her latest book, The Time We Have: Essays on Pandemic Living, Michele invites us to examine how the global crisis changed everything—from how we work to how we grieve. With her signature wit and emotional clarity, Michele shares how writing through 2020–2024 became both a mirror and a memory, capturing what so many of us felt but never had the words to say. From holding our breath when strangers passed by to the fear of unknowingly infecting loved ones, Michele gives voice to our collective anxiety, love, loss, and resilience.

Simon and Chris are pixelated by household helpers, those elusive, often hairy beings like Brownies, Tomten, and Skrats who muck out stables, scrub pans, rock babies, edit podcasts and occasionally fetch the midwife, all in exchange for a humble bowl of porridge. Our domestic duo explore why these spirits have such complicated relationships with clothing, what draws them to a home (or sends them storming off), and wonder aloud if you can still hire one in today's difficult real estate market. Along the way, the two squabble over whether houses go up or down in value with a helper, the emotional climate of homes, and the surprising requirements for crafting your own supernatural assistant (spoiler: toes and horses are involved). UK helpers are compared with their Scandinavian, North European, and North American cousins. While Simon berates Chris for her shocking ignorance of the Swiss variety, Chris lectures Simon on a brave new world of railway-building brownies on the other side of the Atlantic.
Please welcome The Disco Biscuits bassist/co-founder MARC BROWNSTEIN aka DJ BROWNIE to Episode 089, a particularly wide-ranging, illuminating conversation long overdue but undoubtedly over-delivers. Marc has indeed appeared on a plethora of pods; however, this cosmic convergence is a brutally honest, beautiful breaux-down many, many moons in the making. Tapping in from his family home outside Philly, at 51 years young Brownie is vibrant and verbose, footloose and fancy free, embracing a health-is-wealth mindset, feeling reborn on the wheels of steel. Celebrating his pioneering quartet's 30th anniversary in 2025, whilst confidently co-piloting the Bisco renaissance/revolution in motion. Across nearly 2 hours of fast-paced dialogue, the ever-affable Brownstein is jovial and reverent, pontificating with trademark passion, transparency, vulnerability, and candor. 0:00 - Episode 089 PREVIEW 4:00 - SPONSOR - Down By The River, 7/19 Cactus Jack's, CO 6:00 - The UPFUL Update 8:30 - Introducing MARC BROWNSTEIN 12:30 - INTERVIEW - Brownie [116m] 2:09:00 - intro- DAVE MARGULIES of High Sierra Music Festival 2:13:00 - State of the HSMF Union w/ Dave [19m] 2:32:00 - Afterglow x ViBE Junkie JAM Marc Brownstein pod topics include: DJ Brownie x Adam Deitch, House Music All Night Long, juggling a side project and a main gig, the rebirth of Bisco; 3 decades of Disco Biscuits, practice, band interpersonal dynamics and communicating styles, shedding from home, singing improvements, Coach Joey, substance use- past/present, Brownie quitting ganja/vaping and how it's affecting his life/vocals. In this joyful, laugh-out-loud episode of The Spark, our founding editor Katy Cowan sits down (again!) with the brilliant Emily Jeffrey-Barrett, founder of creative agency Among Equals, to continue where they left off—with less business chat and more banter. Expect everything from shameful Brownie troop confessions and controversial creative opinions (spoiler: she doesn't think we're artists), to what it's like flying business class for the first time and being traumatised by cyclists in London. Along the way, Emily shares the two pieces of advice that have helped her survive as a creative leader, reveals the one word that gives her the heebie-jeebies, and admits her irrational comfort phrase, courtesy of her Yorkshire grandparents: "Hope it works out for you". There's even talk of Wyoming ranches, Branston Pickle nostalgia, and a shared hatred of faffing. Honestly, it's a miracle anything got done. This one's for the high-achievers, the people-pleasers, and anyone who's ever been told to "just relax". This season is proudly sponsored by the School of Communication Arts.

Brad Filipponi emphasizes the importance of education and innovation in the rapidly changing real estate industry. Pirates broadcaster Greg Brown joined the show. The guys talked about a Pirates win in Milwaukee, which was helped by a 5-for-5 night from Nick Gonzales. Greg said teams like the Pirates can't afford to lose players like Gonzales because they don't have the luxury some others have. Greg thinks Spencer Horwitz is another guy that ‘can just plain hit' in this lineup. Brownie said Oneil Cruz and Bryan Reynolds are the guys that need to carry this team in home runs. The guys talked about Cruz's outfield work and a few of the mishaps we've seen recently. Cruz has also gone into a terrible slump at the plate – why? Isaac Mattson has become one of the Pirates best stories, showcasing another local product. Greg credited Don Kelly for how some of the players have responded. Greg said it's hard not to root for the players. Greg hinted that Ben Cherington has something brewing about a month out of the trade deadline.

Pirates broadcaster Greg Brown joined the show. Greg thinks Don Kelly is in this for the long-haul and is not the interim manager of the Pirates. We are starting to see Bryan Reynolds heat up a bit, and he's not the only hitter you can say that about. Kelly is actually 15-11 in complete games managed this season, an even better mark than his 15-14 overall record. Can Paul Skenes win the Cy Young with a losing record or are voters still do dead-set on wins and losses? Brownie said Kelly is not afraid as Pirates manager to take chances and risks during games, unlike what we saw from Derek Shelton most of his tenure. Greg was surprised we didn't see Bubba Chandler during this homestand and isn't sure when he arrives. Brownie questioned how good Chandler will be when he's here. If we could ask Aaron Rodgers a question today, what would you ask him? Aaron Rodgers has started talking to the media at the Steelers facility. Wet got on a tangent about when Renegade is played.

I was scared of carrots. So I would add in carrots at lunch or half a sweet potato at dinner or half a slice of bread. And I would see, oh the world didn't end. That actually satisfied me longer. Pirates broadcaster Greg Brown joined the show. Greg spoke his mind about the bad call in San Diego the other night in the Henry Davis at bat, which was the Pirates last real shot to win the game. Brownie said it's a forgone conclusion that the technology will be changed by Opening Day 2026. Greg talked about the leadership in the clubhouse and why Andrew McCutchen speaking up the other night really meant something. Chris asked Greg about Cutch tying Roberto Clemente for third all-time on the Pirates HR list and what #22 means to the city. Greg thinks McCutchen is Hall of Fame worthy in terms of consideration and says he is continuing to build a strong case. What type of crowd is expected tonight with Paul Skenes on the mound?

Troy Kinne is an award-winning comedian, actor, writer, producer and director. In the early days of his stand-up comedy career, Troy won almost every new comic competition in Australia. The Comic's Lounge ‘You Gotta be Joking' competition saw him receive the prize of a trip to New York to attend the American Institute of Comedy. He went on to perform at several well-known clubs in the U.S. including Caroline's on Broadway, Stand Up New York, Gotham Comedy club, the Laugh Factory, The Hollywood Comedy Store and The Comedy Cellar. On returning to Australia Troy became a sought-after headline act for The Australian Armed Defence forces, Mining camps and Comedy clubs around the country. In 2010 Troy added some steady work alongside the comedy club circuit, becoming a content producer for the Fifi and Jules radio show and hosting his own regular segment interviewing celebrity guests such as Seth Rogen, Josh Lawson, Simon Pegg and DJ Havana Brown. Troy has made guest appearances on TV and radio including Nova FM's Hughsie and Kate for breakfast, Hamish & Andy, Chrissie, Sam and Brownie, Have You Been Paying Attention, The Hundred with Andy Lee and The Comedy Channel's Stand-Up Australia. However, Troy is mostly known for his own Sketch Comedy TV shows - KINNE (7 Mate) and KINNE TONIGHT (CH10). The KINNE show saw Troy nominated for the 2015 Logie Award for Most Outstanding Newcomer and a number of sketches from his shows have racked up millions of online views worldwide. Troy's comedy is known for being extremely relatable. Proof of this is his video content constantly going ‘viral' with his online following currently sitting at well over 1 million plus across all social media platforms. FULL STORY which is a special movie length opening episode is out now on YouTube which Troy funded himself – check it out (below)! I loved it! About Full Story: Full Story is being labelled by Kinne as a ‘one hour showcase special'. “Rather than being a standard ‘first episode' pilot, episode one of Full Story is essentially a mini movie, resulting in a much more comprehensive example of the vast opportunities for the series and the characters in terms of longevity.” The story follows Tucker Taylor and his struggling publicity agency who find themselves thrust into a situation requiring more time executing crisis management for themselves than their clients. This bold new series boasts a diverse lineup of talent in both background and experience ranging from newcomers, to rising stars to Aussie screen legends – Troy Kinne (Kinne, Kinne Tonight), Genevieve Hegney (Colin from Accounts), Tiana Hogben (Thank God You're Here), Kevin Hofbauer (Hamish and Andy's True Story), April Rose Pengilly (Neighbours), Colette Mann (Prisoner), Kaily Emma Smith (Stakes), Rob Mills (Every musical ever made ever), and Sicilee Diep-Dubois (Acting debut). The popularity of Kinne's previous work has resulted in eager guest appearances from Aussie stars. Lending their talents are Sophie Monk, Josh Lawson and Scott Ryan. The Full Story series explores cancel culture and the consequences that can come with fame whether seeking it or not. However, the real heart of the series is its honesty when portraying behaviour (even if it's a tough pill to swallow for the audience). This is its point of difference – no holding back. We see desperation at its finest from every perspective possible which can be an uncomfortable eye opener, encouraging the viewer to think about, and in some instances, question their own behaviour/thoughts. FULL STORY promises to be a hilarious and entertaining journey for audiences keen to once again indulge in a scripted series with ‘some balls'. We chat about his love of Thailand, creating videos, FULL STORY, heart issues, trusting your gut, being ‘made wrong', regrets, comedy, magic writing on planes, getting tv shows plus plenty more! Send us a textThe frontier settlement of Dodge City earned its nickname "Bibulous Babylon" honestly in 1873. With no formal law enforcement and a population explosion of buffalo hunters and railroad workers, violence flourished—15 to 30 people died violently that first year alone. Boot Hill Cemetery filled quickly with those who "died with their boots on."Enter Billy Brooks, a man whose reputation preceded him. Already known as "Bully Brooks," he'd been a buffalo hunter, stagecoach driver renowned for delivering mail through flooded creeks, and briefly served as Newton's city marshal where he'd been shot three times yet still chased his attackers for miles. When concerned Dodge City businessmen needed someone to impose order without official backing, Brooks seemed the perfect solution—a man whose mere presence might deter troublemakers.Legend claims Brooks engaged in a staggering 15 gunfights during his brief tenure, reportedly killing seven or eight men. But when we examine the historical record closely, a different picture emerges. Most of these alleged confrontations lack names, dates, or any primary documentation. What we can verify are just two significant incidents: shooting railroad yardmaster Brownie through the head (who surprisingly survived) and more tellingly, backing down from Kirk Jordan in a public confrontation that shattered his fearsome image. After hiding under a bed until nightfall, Brooks left town, his effectiveness as a lawman permanently compromised. His life spiraled downward from there—returning to stagecoach driving before losing his job, then turning to horse theft, which led to his arrest and eventual lynching by vigilantes in 1874. Brooks' story perfectly encapsulates the contradictions of frontier justice: hired to impose order through intimidation, he ultimately fell victim to the same extra-legal violence he represented. What does our fascination with figures like Brooks reveal about our relationship with the American frontier? Why do we cling to the 15 gunfights legend despite limited evidence? Join us as we separate Wild West myth from documented reality, and consider what stories like his tell us about ourselves.Ready to explore more frontier tales?
