Hungry Ghost Day is the one day of the year where all of the ghosts and spirits that have been dwelling in the Lower Realm can leave the Underworld and walk amongst the living. But the ghosts that walk the earth during the Hungry Ghost Festival are not those of our beloved dead ancestors who just popped in to say hello, or to tell us that they miss us. No, these spirits have a much more anguished story to tell.

Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - From August 29 to September 14, the Old Schoolhouse Art Gallery will host ‘How Do You Like the Underworld?—Kristen Scofield-Sweet's final large-scale exhibition. “This is my retirement party swan song on the wall,” she began. “This is a body of work that's complete. One of the remarkable things about that is the artist doesn't usually get to see their work all hung together, obviously, unless they have a show. You're used to seeing a piece over the couch with the pillows or the throw at the back. To actually see them having a conversation with each other is really special.” “Every picture tells a story, so you can get all tangled up with how it got painted and why, how I work and yada, yada. In an exhibition like this, the work gets to speak for itself, and that's really profound.” Cortes Currents: How did you come up with the title? Kristen Scofield-Sweet: “It's just an image from walking down the road in my neighborhood, looking for something significant, clicking along, taking pictures. When I got back home and looked at them, it was like, ‘whoa!' The notion ‘How do you like the underworld?' just popped into my head, and so there it is.” Cortes Currents: I have to ask, how do you like the Underworld? Kristen Scofield-Sweet: “I think we live there.” Cortes Currents: What is the Underworld?

Welcome to September's astrology forecast, where we're diving deep into some of the most significant planetary movements we'll see this decade. This month, Pluto crosses a rare threshold—going out of bounds for the first time in years, setting the stage for profound transformation that will echo through 2035. But that's just the beginning of our September story. In this episode, we explore:Saturn's surprising return to Pisces for another 5+ months, giving Saturn return folks more time to prepare for their next life chapter. If you have planets in late mutable signs or you're in your Saturn return, this extended timeline is especially meaningful for you.Mercury's journey through Virgo brings problem-solving energy and the chance to fix what's been broken. We'll talk about how to use this practical earth sign energy effectively, plus navigate the flow of the Mercury opposite Saturn-Neptune aspect mid-month.The rare phenomenon of Pluto out of bounds and what this means for shadow work, power reclamation, and collective transformation. I share thoughts on both the opportunities and challenges this brings.Mars moving into Scorpio and its exact square with Pluto on September 24—a moment that calls for strategic thinking and understanding your opponent's weaknesses (whether that's an external challenge or an internal pattern).A beautiful flow opportunity on September 11 when the Moon, Jupiter, and Sun align for supportive energy you can work with.Key dates to remember: Mercury enters Virgo (Sept 2), Mercury-Sun clarity moment (Sept 13), Mercury enters Libra (Sept 18), Mars enters Scorpio (Sept 22), and Mars square Pluto (Sept 24).I also touch on post-traumatic resilience—how we can build the skills to not just survive challenges but grow stronger through them. This feels especially relevant as we navigate Pluto's invitation to look at our experience with eyes wide open.Whether you're new to astrology or have been following planetary cycles for years, this forecast offers both the big picture view and practical guidance for working with September's energies.Episode Length: 17:46Resources mentioned: Saturn-Neptune Conjunction Webinar September 13 Mini Summit with Demetra George, Melanie Reinhart, Kelly Surtees and Safron Rossi Astrology University events CONNECT WITH ME:
I could not be happier with this final interview of the Sacred Remembering Podcast. It was so incredible to sit down with Erin Fisher (for the third time on Sacred Remembering!) to talk about an area of her expertise and something every aging woman needs to be aware of - The Underworld. Erin is a genius at walking us through the correlation between women's hormones and the evolution of the female psyche/soul. I love that we start this conversation right out of the gate by talking about breaking out of patriarchy. By the end of the episode, I think we name that we both no longer play by those old rules. Through owning our own journeys very deeply, working with the Self, body, hormones, and psyche, we emerge powerful and creational! We cover deep topics such as: + The Underworld + Women's hormones & the psyche + The alchemy of perimenopause and menopause + Constraining identities + Deeper connection to self + Rebirth + Creation + Integration of feminine wisdom + Supports for women during this journey + Personal stories of traversing the Underworld + How we are more equipped, connected, and prosperous on the other side Listen to the podcast and all episodes here: https://www.sarahpoet.com/podcast Work with Erin Fisher here: https://www.wellandwisewoman.com/ #sacredremembering #vitality #womenshormones #underworldjourney #wellandwisewoman #perimenopause #menopause #rebirth #souljourney #womenswisdom #sacredfeminine #hormonesupport #wombwisdom
Episode 489 / Alexis RockmanBorn in 1962 in New York, Alexis Rockman has depicted a darkly surreal vision of the collision between civilization and nature – often apocalyptic scenarios on a monumental scale – for over three decades. Notable solo museum exhibitions include “Alexis Rockman: Manifest Destiny” at the Brooklyn Museum (2004), which traveled to several institutions including the Wexner Center for the Arts (2004) and the Rhode Island School of Design (2005). In 2010, the Smithsonian American Art Museum organized “Alexis Rockman: A Fable for Tomorrow,” a major touring survey of his paintings and works on paper. Concurrent with Rockman's 2013 exhibition at Sperone Westwater, the Drawing Center mounted “Drawings from Life of Pi,” featuring the artist's collaboration with Ang Lee on the award-winning film Life of Pi. His series of 76 New Mexico Field Drawings was included in “Future Shock” at SITE Santa Fe (2017-18). “Alexis Rockman and Mark Dion: A Journey to Nature's Underworld” was presented at the Bruce Museum, Greenwich, CT (2023) and traveled to the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (2024). It will be on view at the Tang Teaching Museum at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY until 5 January 2025, and at the Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State from August 30th through December 7th. His work is represented in many museum collections, including the Baltimore Museum of Art; Brooklyn Museum; Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art; Grand Rapids Art Museum; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; New Orleans Museum of Art; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Smithsonian American Art Museum; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; and Whitney Museum of American Art. Rockman's first solo exhibition with Sperone Westwater, “Evolution,” was presented in 1992. He has had subsequent solo exhibitions at the gallery in 2013, 2018, 2020-21 and 2023. He lives and works in Warren, Connecticut.
Today we sat down with Author and Crime reporter for 20 years Jared Savage who has released a third book on organised crime in New Zealand. The brutal execution of an innocent man. The undercover DEA agent who fooled the Hells Angels in a 400kg cocaine plot. The brutal execution of a not-so innocent man. The never-ending quest to bring down New Zealand's most wanted gangsters. These stories read like a crime novel - delving down into a parallel universe that many do not know even exists.

In this episode of the podcast, I'm joined by author Ron K. Fried for a deep dive into one of the most compelling figures in organized crime history: Frank Costello, the mob boss who rose to power during Prohibition and later became known as the “Prime Minister of the Underworld.” We discuss Ron's novel Frank Costello: A Novel—a carefully researched work of historical fiction that vividly brings Costello's complex character to life. Together, we explore the real-life events behind the book and how Ron approached writing about a man who straddled the worlds of organized crime and political power. We start with Costello's early years—his immigration from Sicily, his upbringing in East Harlem, and how he gravitated toward petty crime and gang life. In this environment, he met future legends like Charles “Lucky” Luciano, Meyer Lansky, Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel, and Vito Genovese—key figures in the creation of a national crime syndicate.During Prohibition, Costello built his fortune and reputation through bootlegging, running extensive liquor operations, and leveraging alliances that would shape the mob's future. We discuss the bloody 1931 power shift following the assassinations of Joe Masseria and Salvatore Maranzano, which led to the formation of the Five Families. As Luciano's trusted associate, Costello rose in the ranks of what would become the Genovese Crime Family. We explore the mid-1930s transition period when Luciano was imprisoned and Genovese fled to Italy to avoid a murder charge. This opened the door for Costello to become acting boss, a position he would hold for nearly 20 years. During this time, he built a reputation as a refined, politically connected mobster who favored influence over brute force—garnering real sway in political and judicial circles. We delve into Costello's political entanglements, including the wiretap involving Judge Thomas Aurelio, in which Costello was caught influencing judicial appointments. We also examine his ties to New York Mayor William O'Dwyer and his suspected involvement in the mysterious death of Abe Reles, a Murder, Inc. informant who “fell” from a window while under police protection. One major focus is Costello's appearance at the 1951 Kefauver Committee hearings, a turning point in his career. His decision to only allow his hands to be filmed became a media sensation and diminished his power and mystique. The public scrutiny weakened his position and empowered rivals—most notably, Vito Genovese, who sought to reclaim the top spot in the family. We look at the 1957 assassination attempt on Costello, carried out by Vincent “The Chin” Gigante on Genovese's orders. Though Costello survived, he chose to step down. We also discuss the murder of Albert Anastasia later that year, and the theory that Costello may have had a hand in framing Genovese, leading to his 1959 conviction on narcotics charges. From there, we examine Costello's final years, during which he remained influential behind the scenes but largely retired from active leadership. We reflect on his complex legacy: a ruthless gangster who carefully curated an image of legitimacy and respectability. Ron shares how he explored that duality in his novel—bringing humanity to a man who lived in both the criminal underworld and the corridors of political power. We also discuss mob portrayals in film and television, and look ahead to the upcoming 2025 gangster film Alto Knights, a much-anticipated movie featuring dramatizations of several key historical figures we covered. Our conversation touches on why the Mafia continues to fascinate the public and how Frank Costello's story stands apart as one of strategy, survival, and power.
This month on the Feminine Frequency with Jennifer Mulak, we sit down with a dear friend Beth Carestia. Living in the Hudson Valley for almost two decades Beth has come to love our vibrant and diverse community. Local Tarot Reader, proud O+ Alum performer with The Goddess Party and soon to be the MC for the O+ Festival Comedy Show second year running.Playing faithfully with the Rosendale Ukulele group for some time now has brought Beth joy beyond measure. Also being Beth's fifth time contributing her voice to a Radio Kingston show, all have become sparkling personal highlights. We chat with Beth about recently leaving her 9-5 and stepping into what's next. How the yearning to do something more aligned with her passion and purpose started brewing long before the leap, how the loss of the structure has nudged her to look more deeply inward and importantly, how she values and cares for herself. We talk about how she's approaching life with less structure, more joy and a lot of compassion for self. Having all been there in one way or the other, we all vibe about what it is to be in that liminal space, sometimes called the void or the underworld, between where you've been and where you're going. This past weekend's New Moon is perfectly aligned with what we're talking about and where we're at.Today's show was engineered by Ian Seda from Radiokingston.org.Our show music is from Shana Falana!Feel free to email me, say hello: she@iwantwhatshehas.org** Please: SUBSCRIBE to the pod and leave a REVIEW wherever you are listening, it helps other users FIND IThttp://iwantwhatshehas.org/podcastITUNES | SPOTIFYITUNES: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/i-want-what-she-has/id1451648361?mt=2SPOTIFY:https://open.spotify.com/show/77pmJwS2q9vTywz7Uhiyff?si=G2eYCjLjT3KltgdfA6XXCAFollow:INSTAGRAM * https://www.instagram.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast/FACEBOOK * https://www.facebook.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast

On our latest podcast, we chat about the episodes of Coronation Street shown between the 18th - 22nd August (Episodes #11,647 - 11,652). There was definitely something in the Weatherfield water this week as everyone seemed to be more than a little bit randy! From Steve and Cassie (and an unwilling third party teddy bear) cavorting in the living room of Number 9 to Sarah-Louise using her best seduction techniques on Underworld's latest client, the cobbles were practically steaming - and as for Abi and Carl's saucy antics.. well we can definitely say we were pleased to see Tracy pouring a bucket of cold water over that on Friday! Also this week, we had Aadi deciding that a trip to India maybe isn't such a bad idea after all, romance between Dee-Dee and Olly, and an some intriguing comments from Costello that had us theorising all sorts about the circumstances surrounding Becky's death... After the Street Talk segment of the podcast, we were off to The Kabin, where we take a look at which cast members have been nominated for an NTA this year, and we finish things off with some lovely listener feedback. From the Lock Tavern via The Gun to spoons… Family Silver are Mr Nick ‘The Gun' Stephens and Casper ‘Volte Face' Clark. Nick was the publican at The Gun, a much-loved Hackney institution that recently closed its doors – more on that here for those who have been living under a rock. Nick's excellent Netil radio show can also be found here. Casper, is based in Clapton and was the music programmer for Camden institution The Lock Tavern where our paths originally crossed – most of the time being kicked out whilst DJing. Casper's shared stages with Justice, Jeff Mills, Helena Hauff, Daniel Avery and many more and is also known for his long-running BleeD events via which he collaborated with labels like Blackest Ever Black, PAN and Downwards. Both share a love for “v lo-fi early eighties sound, kosmische, post-punk and scuzzy electronics,” with Nick's influences ranging from 80s TV themes and Giorgio Moroder to The KLF, while Casper was shaped in his youth by electronic acts like Leftfield, Underworld, and William Orbit with DJ Hell's International Deejay Gigolo Records becoming a huge influence later on. Their sound sits between post-punk and the electronic… so with that in mind let's give it a listen shall we? His subject? The geometry of Dante's Inferno. In this lecture we'll look at some of Galileo's deductions, and how the questions raised may have influenced his later mathematical research. Using this and other examples of creative work in mathematics that crosses our modern ideas of subject boundaries, I will argue that thinking across disciplines is not only intellectually exciting but academically vital. This Annual Provost's Lecture was recorded by Sarah Hart on June 18th 2025 at Barnard's Inn Hall, London.Sarah Hart was the first woman Professor of Geometry at Gresham College, and Acting Provost between March and October 2025. She is also Professor Emerita of Mathematics at Birkbeck, University of London.Professor Hart studied at Oxford and Manchester, gaining her PhD in 2000. Postdoctoral research and teaching followed, including a prestigious Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council Fellowship, before she was appointed to a lectureship at Birkbeck in 2004. She became Professor of Mathematics there in 2013, and served in various management roles including as Head of Mathematics and Statistics, Assistant Dean, and Programme Director for the MSc Mathematics. Her academic publications have been mainly in the area of pure mathematics known as group theory, which has many applications both inside and outside of mathematics, for example in coding theory and cryptography. She is actively involved in the British Society for the History of Mathematics, and has served a three-year term as President of the Society from 2021-2023.The transcript of the lecture is available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/galileos-journey-underworld-case-interdisciplinary-thinkingGresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. The Underworld is the place where you broke bread with Baba Yaga, made peace with limit, were fed small scraps of meat by crows when you needed it the most. It's the deep dip in a myth, the katabasis, the descent, the mischievous, startling bewilderment of irrational energies. Logic has little traction at such a moment. Successful returnees of the Underworld are Blake, Anna Swir, Patti Smith, Elie Wiesel. Sometimes we make these journeys alone, sometimes as a culture. My petition is that we accept the challenge of uncertainty. As a matter of personal style. It's the right thing to do. It's what the Anglo-Saxons called “living in the bone-house.” We get older, we find life is riven with weirdness. We should be weird too. To know, tell, and create stories is a wondrous skill that keeps faith with the traditional and beauteous techniques our ancestors used when faced with the sudden mists and tripwires of living. —Martin Shaw

Chris and Molly read Underworld, part 15. Part 2, chapter4. You look at them, and they kill you. Discussion starts at 26:02.
What if Persephone's abduction wasn't just a tragedy, but the beginning of her empowerment? Storyteller and dream witch Libby Rose Waite weaves a spellbinding retelling of the Persephone myth that challenges everything we thought we knew about this ancient tale. Rather than focusing solely on Demeter's grief, we witness Persephone's transformation from a silenced princess to the powerful Queen of the Underworld. The story begins with Persephone trapped between her mother's suffocating love and Olympian expectations, unable to express her creative gifts. When Apollo plays his lyre, she's told not to share her music. When the Muses recite poetry, she's instructed to keep her verses hidden. This painful fifth house experience—being told your creativity isn't worthy—resonates deeply with our modern struggles. As we descend with Persephone into Hades' realm, something unexpected unfolds. Rather than remaining a victim, she begins to transform the underworld itself—decorating with flowers from Asphodel's fields, arranging stones from Sisyphus's boulder, creating beauty in darkness. In this hidden place, unseen by the judging eyes of Olympus, Persephone discovers her authentic voice and power. This revelatory episode explores the astrological tension between the fifth house (creative expression) and eleventh house (societal expectations), illuminating how our most profound self-discovery often happens in the places we least expect. Libby and Chris share personal stories of ritual, grief, and honoring the underworld journey, reminding us that sometimes we must descend to truly find ourselves. As we witness Persephone finally taking her throne beside Hades, we understand that her annual cycle of descent and return isn't just about seasons—it's about embracing all aspects of ourselves, blanketing even our darkest journeys with love, and finding sovereignty in unlikely realms.*this write up was generated by Buzzsprout's AITo find out more about Libby's work go here. We venture into the inner spaces of the earth to explore her mysteries, rekindle wonder. As we cross the threshold into the underland, following our own Cerunnos, our knowledgeable guide, we find ourselves within an adventure in which space and time change at every step, climbing, descending, grasping onto crevices and cracks to move ahead and discover the possibilities that hide right under our feet. We also go further into the life story of the owner of the Rio Claro Reserve and listen to his words and wisdom regarding the issues of the Magdalena River, so intertwined with the history of Colombia, as revealed in the new Wade Davis book. I conclude with the emergence of the new face of the Green Human, the newest earthlings who will be tasked with re-building a radically different, nature-centric future.

Indiana Jones' further adventures may have stopped (for now), but Brian and Sam are still at it! And they've brought along a Star Friend from A Long Time Ago, Kregg Castillo, to dive into a Thrawn storyline published over a year and a half ago! In addition to our bafflement regarding the insane way Marvel has chosen to present this storyline, Sam is also having his R5-D4 dreams crushed, Brian is reminiscing on his recent travels abroad, and the whole gang is finally taking a trip to the Underworld.
We're still not done with Libra – or Libra is not done with us! In Episode 28, DDSWTNP pick up threads left hanging after our three-part treatment of DeLillo's JFK novel. While tackling a wide variety of subjects, this episode homes in on Anthony DeCurtis's 1988 interview with DeLillo for Rolling Stone (and later re-published in expanded form), “An Outsider in This Society.” We're led to discuss DeLillo's canny interview articulations in general, his method of writing by day and reading more history by night, and his reply to the suggestion that on the basis of Libra some readers regarded him as “a member of the paranoid left”: “I don't have a program.” Along the way we also draw in vivid evidence of how DeLillo subtly reworked the voice of Marguerite Oswald from testimony in the Warren Report, what fellow Oswald novelist Norman Mailer had to say about Libra, and all that is illuminated by an exchange of letters to the New York Times between DeLillo and one of the Warren Report investigators. We also try here to understand as fully as possible the nuances of DeLillo's ideas about historical fiction that emerge in the incredible DeCurtis interview: what DeLillo means when he says Libra is “a piece of work which is obviously fiction,” touts novels' ability to “redeem” readers' “despair,” and makes the powerful claim that “fiction rescues history from its confusions.” We quote enough that listeners will get plenty of insight even without having read the DeCurtis interview in full, and we look forward to applying many of the lessons about history learned here to future works like Underworld. “Some stories never end,” as DeLillo writes to begin “Assassination Aura,” and that's true of this episode's cover image, which uses a National Enquirer cover from March 2025 about new releases of JFK files. The interlude clip near the beginning is from Oswald's August 1963 interviews on WDSU-TV in New Orleans. Finally, as we note in the episode, thanks to Joel in Toronto for an Instagram comment (we're @delillopodcast) that inspired our return to the DeCurtis interview.
