Pete brings new and improved roasts of Mike while retroactively responding to Mike's roasts of Pete from their previous episode. Plus the two comics have one of the most pure Working It Out sessions of all time as they create jokes in real time about their complex relationships with their dads. Interview begins @ 6:04 In this episode, comedian Pete Holmes meets theologian and former AC/DC road manager, Barry Taylor, for the first time, despite Pete having referenced a profound quote from Barry in his work for nearly a decade. The conversation kicks off with Pete diving into Barry's storied history with rock & roll, setting the stage for a deeper exploration into how both comedy and rock music act as catalysts for transformation, challenging societal norms and speaking truth to power during critical times. Together, they discuss the delicate dance between the sacred and the profane and how art masterfully navigates the lines of culture, taboo, transgression, and spirituality. As the digital age reshapes our world, creating divisions and highlighting polarization, Barry points out the unique role of the arts in cutting through these dynamics. Throughout the episode, the influence of Richard Rohr is evident, as all participants share their personal connections to his teachings and reflect on spiritual practice as an essential tool to combat the ego's pull. Bio: Pete Holmes is the creator and star of HBO's Crashing (produced by Judd Apatow) and TBS' The Pete Holmes Show (produced by Conan O'Brien). He's also the star of CBS' How We Roll as well as two HBO stand-up comedy specials. Pete's also the voice of the e*trade baby and was a guest writer/star on multiple episodes of The Simpsons. He's also proud to be the dumbest Batman on YouTube (Badman), the host of the wildly popular You Made It Weird podcast and the author of Comedy Sex God. Check out his Netflix special, I Am Not For Everyone. He wrote this bio in third person. He napped shortly thereafter. https://peteholmes.com Barry Taylor lives and works in London, having returned to the U.K. after many years in Los Angeles. He has committed his life to following his curiosities, which have taken many forms including music, fashion, art, religion, and academia. His interests primarily lie in the areas of religion, theology, and philosophy, particularly exploring how cultural shifts reshape our understanding of what it means to be human, our interactions with others, and our grappling with fundamental questions about human existence and ultimate meaning. His wide variety of interests currently converge around the impact of technology on society and culture. It's time to grapple with the absurdity of life, the nature of reality, truth, consciousness, and the hard problems that perplex humanity. Here to add a healthy dose of humor, wit, and wisdom to this week's inquiry is one of my favorite humans, Pete Holmes. A stand-up king with a cornucopia of comedy specials, including HBO's Faces and Sounds, Dirty Clean, and the CBS sitcom How We Roll, Pete is best known as the creator and star of the semi-autobiographical critically acclaimed HBO show Crashing which he created alongside friend of the pod Judd Apatow. In addition, he hosts the You Made It Weird podcast and is the author of the bestselling memoir, Comedy Sex God. Pete is also working on a new comedy special worthy of your attention entitled, 'I'm Not For Everyone', which drops on Netflix October 24th. Today we talk about everything from spirituality to comedy, creativity, consciousness, fatherhood, and the many disorientations of mid-life. More specifically, we talk about how parenthood changes your perspective on life, why pain is the precursor to transformation, the nature of reality and the illusion of self, and why mercy is more powerful than forgiveness. Much has changed since Pete was first on the podcast back in 2019. This one is equal parts silly and spiritual, philosophical and funny. Prepare to have your noodle bent—and have some laughs along the way. You knew this had to happen eventually. We watched Garden State, a movie we are all contractually obligated to say we hate now because we loved it so much in 2004. For this week's review, Andrea and Jodie made a promise to themselves that they would come to this movie for the first time in over a decade with an open mind and an open heart. And what they found while exploring the infinite abyss may surprise you. They talk about the dangers of quitting your psychiatric meds cold turkey, Natalie Portman's baby voice, unprocessed family trauma, why Zach Braff hates dogs, and how the soundtrack to Garden State still kinda slaps. Plus a whole lot more. We had a lot to say about this movie. And next week, we're kicking off our "Movies That Are Thematically Appropriate to Watch During the Month of October" mini-series with the 1996 teen supernatural horror movie, The Craft. You can watch it everywhere.Mentioned in this episode:- It's the Ten-Year Anniversary of Realizing Garden State Sucked- In Defense of Zach Braff's Garden State- The Bataan Death March of Whimsy Case File #1: Elizabethtown- Sally Hayward's review of Garden State for Disability Studies Quarterly- Zach Braff on You Made It Weird with Pete HolmesIf you're reading this, that means you've probably got your podcatcher of choice open right now. Back for the first time in 7 years is my good friend Valerie Chaney. Val is a meditation and mindfulness educator, writer and the co-host of the We Made It Weird podcast with her husband, comedian Pete Holmes. Val is hilarious, gentle, wise, incredibly smart and one of my favorite people. It was no surprise when we talked for over three hours, so I'm splitting up this episode into two parts.Val trained with Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield, who both have informed her work within healing trauma, mindfulness, meditation, and embodiment, which we spoke about at length in part 1 last week. This second half of our conversation is a bit sillier! We talk more about therapy, what we were like as teens, mean girls, finding your hobbies and creative process, as well as the rom coms and style trends we love from the early 2000s.In addition to her mindfulness work, Val is one of the most talented and creative people I know: she teaches dance, sings in a choir and, most recently, wrote a screenplay, which she discussed at the end of part 1. If you haven't listened to part 1, be sure to tune in to hear us discuss anger—and our problem with expressing it. We also cover Internal Family Systems, learning to inhabit your body, embodiment vs. dissociating, attachment styles, fear of being alone, and how to approach all these insights with gentleness. Pete Holmes delivers a spiritual comedy sermon of a podcast called “You Made It Weird,” one of the first podcasts we covered on our show, and one of our favorites. The pandemic brought a new flavor of weirdness, “We Made It Weird,” and Pete shares the mic with his wife, Sweet Lady Val. They get silly and serious, discuss stand up, writing, creativity, meditation, the meaning of life. They get in married-couple kinds of fights, in real time, and make up with a level of kindness and care that warms our hearts.
Dream jobs, let's talk about them. I don't know how many of you out there have your dream job, I hope most of you do, but my guess is that most of us do not and, worse, we don't even know what a dream job actually looks like. For me, I think it would be my dream job to be able to create great podcast content and assist others to be able to create the content they want to create and actually get paid for it! For Jeni Wren Stottrup, that is everyday life! Jeni runs Gritty Bird Podcasting, which helps people produce the podcasts that they want to produce, and also runs “The Podcaster's Forum” for aspiring mic-jockeys to connect, learn and share with one another. So, Jeni has MY dream job! Am I jealous? Yes! Would I hire her? Absolutely. We talk a great deal about podcasting, since we have both been doing it for a while, and Jeni gives great advice to those that are starting out, as well as those that have been doing it for a while. We also talk about her interesting life philosophy based on her family's background. Sometimes it’s important to understand your limits. Like setting a budget or knowing how much you can drink at a party before you end up naked and asking people for pony rides… sorry Grandma, your birthday was great! This episode’s guest, Douglas Noll, doesn’t look at limits the same way; he has figured out how to break all of the limits: physically, mentally and has perfected learning in what seems like a superhuman way. Doug Noll was a trial lawyer in California who was tenacious and sought-after all throughout the state. Hating the commute, Doug decided to learn how to fly just to get out of traffic-jams. Ed has been a part of bands and has recently taken up concert jazz. That’s right, took up jazz. For fun. Most recently, he has been a best-selling author and has created a program to help murderers in prison to become experts in diffusing violent situations. If that last sentence doesn’t boggle your mind, I don’t know what will. We talk about learning and how to do it properly, his time as a musician, some of his amazing trial lawyer stories, the time he almost died flying a plane, and then we talk a great deal about his de-escalation techniques and his work with inmates which is absolutely amazing. You can learn more about Doug and his programs at https://dougnoll.com This episode’s sketch: "You’re Good Enough. We're back with the season debut of The Art of Humanity! We have a brand new season that focuses on "Uncertainty" during these...weird times. And what better way to start the season than with a fellow podcast host of a show called..."You Made It Weird!" Today's guest is someone who aligns with my mission for Humor: My favorite living comedian Pete Holmes! Pete is a comedian, actor, writer, producer, television host, spiritual seeker, and podcast host. His wildly popular podcast You Made it Weird is a comedic exploration of the meaning of life with guests ranging from Deepak Chopra and Elizabeth Gilbert to Seth Rogen and Garry Shandlin. Pete also created and starred in the semi-auto-bio-graphical HBO show Crashing, which he executive produced alongside Judd Apatow. An accomplished stand-up with three hour-long television specials and late-night appearances, he tours regularly (when we're not in a pandemic) to sold-out crowds. If you find the information on the Art of Humanity valuable, please support the #podcast! https://glow.fm/theartofhumanity/

Aaron and guest cohost Devin Gallagher recommend You Made It Weird! You Made It Weird is a comedy podcast from the Nerdist Network, where Pete Holmes talks to comedians, scientists, and spiritualists.
