Carney Freyfogle, CEO of CR3 American Exteriors, returns to the Lava Hot Podcast with a powerful story of transformation and growth. Since his last appearance, CR3 has evolved from a fledgling franchisor with six locations to a thriving enterprise with 15-16 active locations across 14 states, earning recognition as #65 on Entrepreneur's list of top new and emerging franchises.Behind this success lies a fascinating journey of reinvention. Freyfogle candidly shares how they discovered that what works for a single location doesn't automatically translate to franchise success across diverse regions with franchisees of varying skills. This realization triggered a complete system overhaul, with CR3 investing "almost every single dollar" back into infrastructure—rebuilding their foundation to support current franchisees while positioning for future growth toward 100+ locations. The conversation takes a deep dive into CR3's approach to franchise culture, where they balance system compliance with allowing franchisees (whom they call "strategic partners") to put their personal stamp on the business. "Take things away from this, but make it your own," Freyfogle advises during training, fostering authenticity while maintaining brand integrity.Perhaps most compelling is CR3's pioneering integration of artificial intelligence. They've developed an AI chatbot aptly named "Rufus" that's been fed their 400-page operations manual and years of training videos. This innovation allows franchisees to get immediate answers without waiting for corporate responses, accelerating business operations while maintaining consistency. Freyfogle shares broader insights about AI's transformative impact on business, noting, "It's not just a buzzword, it's very real," as he discusses how it's reshaping everything from customer support to legal document preparation. The interview also offers valuable economic insights from someone with visibility across multiple states, noting that while Q1 showed slower activity, recent weeks have brought encouraging upticks. For entrepreneurs considering franchise opportunities in the exterior remodeling space, CR3 presents an attractive option with average ticket sizes exceeding $15,000, with Texas representing a particularly appealing market for expansion.Ready to learn more about franchise opportunities or CR3's services? Tim has spent 34 years and is the fourth generation to work in our family-owned firm with roots in Utah. I started working with my father (Tim Sr.) as a young boy cleaning up job sites. As a teen I moved to working on a ladder installing rain gutter. I worked my way through college from that ladder and upon Graduating from BYUs Marriott School of business in 2003 my father and I became partners. Since then, we have grown from a father and son one truck company to over 60 employees and sub-contractors, making us the largest Rain Gutter and Siding company in Utah. We install rain gutter, leaf protection, ice melting systems, siding, stucco, stone, and windows. Although there have been some very cold days on that ladder and some very long night looking over company finances. I have enjoyed this business from my youth.Along with my father and Grandfather I have had great mentors in the construction community and now I have been given the opportunity to help others like they helped me.I love serving in the community and have served on the executive board of directors for Riverton Football. I also coach High school football and wrestling and have for 10 years. With all I am involved in, my Wife of 25 years my four amazing kids and the family is the center of my world. We love boating and spending time in the great Utah outdoors.

In this episode we continue our discussion about exteriors and answer many of the questions our listeners have sent in. We have a question about whether you can paint your stucco, and that all depends on the climate in which you live, so if you live in a place like Utah where you get the extreme of all 4 seasons, it's going to need to be repainted probably within the next 5-7 years. When talking about color, there are a lot of black and white homes out there, which we would say are somewhat overdone, so if you're going for that look maybe use a more soft white and charcoal black to avoid being so blatant. Color can also be chosen by the environment or other homes that surround it. Can you paint stucco? 2:23Siding, hardie board, and creating interest 3:15Can you replace hardie board for a brick exterior? 7:46Color - Are black and white homes too trendy? 10:59How many colors to use on an all-stucco house 14:29Exterior paint color that isn't black or white 15:19Landscaping, fencing 19:33Decking 22:58Lighting 24:54Entry doors 26:18Garage doors 31:23Exterior remodels 34:32Gutters 35:47“Anything done in good taste is gonna be long lasting. People always ask that, like ‘How do I make sure this isn't gonna be trendy, or tiresome, or classic?' If it's done in good taste, like in your personal style, other people are gonna react to it and they're gonna buy it.” 14:01https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/https://alicelanehome.com/https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHomehttps://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecityNews Letter:https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5
Today we're going to be talking about exteriors and updating the outside of your home. This is a hot topic for Jess because she keeps driving into her neighborhood and seeing one house after the next turning completely white, which used to be Utah tuscan/brown. A lot of repainting happens with homes and we want to talk about the dos and don'ts of painting and what will or will not look good on your home's exterior. An influx of house updates 5:56Is black too trendy for windows? 8:22Paint colors for shutters 10:00Making minor updates without demo 12:38Can you repaint natural stone on the exterior? 17:44Brick and lime washing 23:45Suggestions on trim and window colors for red brick reno, and painting brick 25:42Would you rip off all the brick on a home and start over? 29:18“What we're seeing is that a lot of people are updating and changing these houses. For the most part, people are entirely spraying their whole house white. The rock, the stucco, the brick, the beams they're painting black and putting black garage doors on, or something like that. We're seeing a lot of contrast.” 6:30https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/https://alicelanehome.com/https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHomehttps://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecityNews Letter:https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5
