Sobriety Blueprint Podcast: Episode #12 - The Sober Nation with Tim Stoddart Tim says he comes from a family where everyone is either in recovery or clearly not. He always felt uncomfortable growing up and never felt "cool" with himself. Sports and skateboarding helped for a time, but then drugs and alcohol became the answer. This lead to all kinds of consequences, but the one moment that sticks out most to Tim most is when he couldn't be by his mom's side for a brain operation because he was too dope sick. Not long after that Tim made it in to treatment, connected with his cousin who was actively involved in NA, and started working a 12 Step program of recovery. Eventually Tim started a blog which evolved into Sober Nation. He said the one thing he feels he did really well that allowed Sober Nation to find success is to get out of the way and give people a place to connect. His biggest piece of advice for anyone wanting to be successful in business? "Be willing to fail in public." Although many of Sober Nation's projects have been a success, Tim was clear that most have not. Sobriety Blueprint Podcast: Episode #6 - Health, Fitness & The 12 Step Connection with Tom Shanahan Over 8 years ago Tom's substance abuse and the stresses of being a trial attorney landed him in treatment where he was introduced to the 12 Step program of Alcoholics Anonymous. He Immediately recognized the importance of health and fitness in his own sobriety journey, which lead Tom to write the book, "Spiritual Adrenaline: A Lifestyle Plan to Nourish and Strengthen Your Recovery." The book is filled with research and points out many lesser known links between 12 Step programs and physical health, including the fact that Bill Wilson, co-founder of AA had at one point started putting together a list of foods and supplements that should be used by alcoholics if they wanted to stay sober. When Tom speaks to the importance of making fitness and nutrition a working part of the recovery process he says, "The lifestyle changes need to be made, we're recovering from a lot more than just the substance. The substance was trying to cover up the poor lifestyle choices." Spiritual Adrenaline is a process which integrates the 12 Steps with "outside issues" like healthy lifestyle choices. Related studies have been clear that these same kinds of lifestyle changes can be a huge benefit to those struggling with substance abuse and can contribute to long-term sobriety. Tom also founded Spiritual Adrenaline Adventures which organizes 12 Step based vacations for those looking for more excitement in sobriety. The next destination will be the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu in April of 2020. You can connect with Tom on Facebook or find him on Instagram @spiritual_adr. Sobriety Blueprint Podcast: Episode #4 - The Rise of The Alcohol-Free Bar with Chris Marshall Chris' addiction started at a young age and he admits that his drinking was abnormal from the very start. After getting sober in 2007 and working in the treatment industry, Chris founded Sans Bar, a non-alcoholic bar where people can gather, socialize, and grow as a community whether they are in recovery or not. Sans Bar grew from an idea and small gathering of friends into a permanent location in Austin, TX that has gained national recognition in the media and recovery community. When Chris was asked what could be expected from walking into Sans Bar on a Friday night he said, "The first thing you'll get is a greeting from behind the bar, the second thing you'll notice is that the music is never too loud because we believe that the real product we're serving is connection, and before we even talk about money you'll get a drink in your hand." He also goes on to say that although many people in recovery feel like a sober bar might not be for them, it's really a great opportunity to fellowship with others in recovery and practice attraction rather than promotion. This type of atmosphere may be another path to recovery for those who are "sober curious" Chris has recently taken Sans Bar on the road with a nationwide tour that includes more than 9 major in the U.S. and Canada and has some big plans in the works.
