In this episode, Cherise is joined by returning guests John Gentry, AIA, Partner and Co-founder, and Aimee O'Carroll, ARB, Partner and Co-founder of Go'C in Seattle, Washington. They discuss the new Alton Wines Tasting Room and Wine Garden in Walla Walla, Washington. You can see the project here as you listen along.Alton Wines is quietly tucked into a natural cove just outside Walla Walla, where wave-like hills and vineyards shape the land. The site—once considered “unfarmable” due to its position and soil—offered a rare opportunity: to build something that would not disrupt the landscape, but instead belong to it. As guests arrive, the architecture guides them southward along a vine-covered arbor made of a steel frame that leads directly to the heart of the experience: a tasting room and wine garden arranged across the site from east to west. What is a troubadour? In its simplest definition, it's a poet who puts verse to music. The focus is on the lyrical content and the music is there to serve the storyline. In present day vernacular, the term "troubadour" is usually replaced by the catch-all category "singer-songwriter." Some troubadours are simply singers, perhaps accompanied by a guitar, interpreting another poet's songs. While other troubadours are also poets, writing and singing their own lyrics. Regardless, a troubadour's job is to connect with the listener by bringing the song's story to life. And, after it's over, to make the listener want to hear it again and again on repeat. Because each listen reveals more of the message, it can take a thousand listens to truly know the troubadour's tale. We are Team Derringer (Laura, Alton, and Paul) of Derringer Discoveries. In this episode, we are joined by songwriter Marv Conan of Brooklyn, New York. When you listen, you will hear that Marv is proud to be from Brooklyn and not just from NYC; although, for his voiceover at the end, we somehow got him to say NYC. Marv Conan recently released a song called Judy Joan & Buffy that he wrote about three troubadours who each got their respective starts in the early 1960s, two from Greenwich Village in the U.S. and one arguably from Canada. Listen to the episode to learn more about the Canada controversy. As you will hear, these three troubadours helped Marv to make it through the 1960s after Marv was drafted into the U.S. Army. Marv listened to the troubadours on repeat, back in the day of vinyl records. Recently, he decided to write the song Judy Joan & Buffy to honor these three troubadours who meant so much to him in his youth. The three troubadours are Judy Collins, Joan Baez, and Buffy Sainte-Marie. Join Team Derringer as we talk with Marv and hear snippets of his song Judy Joan & Buffy sung by UK's Victoria BeeBee who toured with Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel. We also talk about the three troubadours while Marv picks two songs from each to remind us why Judy, Joan, and Buffy are legendary and worthy of re-discovery. Do you want to be a Featured Artist on Derringer Discoveries? You'll need 10,000+ monthly listeners on Spotify. On July 10, 1994, in Houston, TX, four to six armed men forcibly entered a house that was being used as a base for selling crack cocaine. The intruders kicked down the door and immediately opened fire. Willie Williams and Clifford Tyler were shot while trying to flee but survived. Alton “Bud” Brown managed to escape unharmed but Charles Monroe was shot and succumbed to his injuries and died. Neither Williams nor Tyler were able to identity the shooter and since there was no physical evidence the case was closed. 12 years later, the case was re-opened with Ivery Dorsery as the primary suspect. Even though Ivery had several alibi witnesses who attested to his whereabouts the night of the crime and even though there was still no physical evidence tying anyone to the shooting, Ivery was charged and convicted with felony murder and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Continuation of our Exodus sermon series.
The Stories: “The class is very methodical and purposeful and scientific in the way that it's designed. The hour is not, ‘I worked out for an hour because that's going to bring me to the body shape that I want.' It's, I'm committing the hour to self with no phones and with movement in my body. My communication is deeply healing on a lot of levels.” “Fake it ‘til you make it? That didn't work for me. Faking it ‘til I make it just evokes too much imposter syndrome. I study until I'm confident. I was thrust into a position where, all of a sudden, I had a successful studio and I was hiring more people. I became focused on reading, learning, taking my own classes, and discovering how I could be better.” The Backstory: "Shackles on, shackles off." After landing in Hollywood, and a lot of soul searching, the one-time actor from Canada stepped into her purpose when she tapped into teaching and what made her feel whole. Wisdom Rains: “I believe that carving out sixty minutes of focusing on self, body, and being, is a type of neurological healing that is also a nervous system healing.” “Ten minutes of moderate movement after you eat is more effective than thirty minutes of moderate movement at another time of day.” On Inspo: “Allow yourself ebb and flow. That's really important. The concept that we have this schedule that's going to last through every life shift and change, and when we fall off, we're bad? We have to remove that thinking because it puts us in a constant state of distress. Where is your space to achieve? Where is your space to explore? Where is your space to have a victory? Those are the things that get us out of bed.” On the Fitness Industry: “We've had our own little industrial revolution from 2014 until now. Boutique fitness hadn't had the boom it has had now.” On Drew Barrymore: “She's trained with every famous person you can imagine, and she kept being drawn back to the way that I work because of the conversation I ask clients to have with their bodies.”What Else: Marnie shares the details for how she does life: sleep and morning routines, weekend routines, skin rituals, what she eats, how she detoxes, the self care and body treatments she believes are worthwhile, and how it's all about waterwaterwater. Some modern bands—ones like Jack White, Larkin Poe, Greta Van Fleet and Marcus King among others—they are beginning to standout for their exceptional musical talents while still holding onto what has become somewhat of a lost art form. “It's not uncommon that young people are making music that nods to the past,” according to the lead guitarist of one of those bands, Tyler Armstrong of The Band Feel, during the first episode of Season 6 of The Load Out Music Podcast. Only about two years old, The Band Feel evolved out of the now-defunct Alton, Illinois-based band known as Nick Bifano and the Innocents. It has quickly become a dynamic quartet, driven by the partnership of Armstrong and lead vocalist Garrett Barcus. Rounded out by drummer T.J. Steinwart and Kadin Rea on bass guitar, the band has quickly become known for its sizzling performances that pay homage to the classic rock era while adding a modern twist. Most comparisons place the The Band Feel somewhere between Led Zeppelin and The Black Crowes, and indeed, watching Armstrong and Barcus on stage is reminiscent of the chemistry once displayed by Robert Plant and Jimmy Page. The Band Feel had what Armstrong calls its “coming out party” just after Covid, releasing an EP that was produced by the five-time Grammy-nominated and ASCAP award winning producer, Paul Moak, at The Smokestack in Nashville. The quartet hit the road in support of Dirty Honey last Fall on the “Can't Find The Breaks” tour, playing more 30 markets in theatres across the US. So with the newness of success, Armstrong—who is remarkably quiet and unassuming—is taking it day-by-day, just trying to focus on building a stronger brotherhood with his bandmates. “We're still pretty new to this thing,” he said with great humility. “I think we view ourselves as special but it's always interesting hearing it. The only expectation in this world is to treat someone as good as you can. It goes deeper than my service level statement. With the band the only expectation is that you treat those of us in the band the best you can.” Special indeed. Welcome to Episode 1 of Season 6 of The Load Out Music Podcast with Tyler Armstrong of The Band Feel. You should be hearing a lot about the band in the coming years.

Ever walked into a dimly lit room certain that someone—or something—was staring right at you? A listener recounts his eerie trip to the notoriously haunted McPike Mansion in Alton, Illinois. Joined by a small group of scientifically inclined friends he descends into the pitch-black cellar, only to see an inexplicable silhouette hovering mere inches away from his fiancée. Adding to the tension, she feels goosebumps on just one side of her body. Coincidence? Infrared trick? Or a spirit who just wanted to say hello?
