Tom Shanahan is an award-winning sportswriter and author whose books focus on Michigan State's football program leading college football integration. College Football Hall of Fame coach Duffy Daugherty 1960s rosters were college football's first fully integration teams. His 2022 story on the Rose Bowl, Alabama and segregation won first place from the Football Writers of Association of America. Shanahan's first book, RAYE OF LIGHT, Jimmy Raye, Duffy Daugherty, the Integration of College Football and the 1965-66 Michigan State Spartans, focused on the Daugherty's back-to-back national championship teams. The Foreword was written by Pro Football Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy. His second book, THE RIGHT THING TO DO, The True Pioneers of College Football Integration in the 1960s, explains how Daugherty's former assistant coaches and players followed his blueprint as head coaches to spread his fingerprints coast to coast. Their influence opened doors for the first Black players to integrate programs in the South and brought about the end of unwritten quotas limiting Black athletes to a half-dozen or so at USC and other schools. The Foreword was written by former East Carolina coach Ruffin McNeill, who was inspired by Jimmy Raye to enter coaching. Tom https://tomshanahan.report

Matt Crawford speaks with veteran award winning sportswriter Tom Shanahan about his book, The Right Thing to Do: The True Pioneers of College Football Integration. The stories of these groundbreaking college football pioneers and the coaches who fought for integration—led by Michigan State's Duffy Daugherty and his coaching tree, featuring the likes of Dan Devine, Chuck Fairbanks and Bill Yeoman—are compiled for the first time in The Right Thing to Do: The True Pioneers of College Football Integration. From award-winning journalist Tom Shanahan, The Right Thing to Do addresses the official racial quota system in the 1960s college football world and the “Conspiracy of Silence” in the sports press, avoiding any mention of racial politics. It also addresses carefully crafted but totally false myths from the era, including the role of Alabama's Paul “Bear” Bryant in college football integration—a role where Bryant was a laggard, not a leader.

Following whatever you're into, flipping the mind into different perspectives, and the individual spirit. Adam Halliwell (Mildlife) "Mildlife was formed in Melbourne by four school friends: keyboardist/vocalist Kevin McDowell, guitarist Adam Halliwell, bassist Tom Shanahan, and drummer James Donald. Taking their initial cues from '70s rock, they went on to encompass a much broader spectrum of influences, bringing them all together in an anything-goes kind of way. They set up their own studio and self-produced all their work, recording live in the room. Constant revision, experimentation, and perfectionism in the arrangement of disparately composed parts meant that it could sometimes take them years to finish a single piece. Shanahan and McDowell are also graphic designers who created the band's logo and all their artwork. Their debut album, Phase, was released in 2018 by Research Records to critical acclaim. It was recorded by engineer Jim Rindfleisch, an old friend of the band, who went on to join them as their drummer following Donald's departure. The success of the album led to a deal with influential British indie label Heavenly, home to Doves and Saint Etienne. In May 2020, Mildlife released the single "Rare Air," a lush, super-smooth groove. Their second album, Automatic, followed in September of that year." In his twenties and early thirties, Tom had developed a lifestyle that centered on alcohol and cocaine. Although he had stopped excessive drinking and drug use, a number of things happened in a short period of time which led him back to that lifestyle. He was wrongfully fired from a high-profile job in 2009 in a public and embarrassing manner. Then in January of 2010, when his colleague's 18-year-old son was paralyzed from the neck down after a snowboarding accident, he agreed to assist with her law practice for a year to allow her to take time to care for her son. Just months later, in March of 2010, his brother was similarly paralyzed from the neck down in a ski accident and he wound up becoming intimately involved in his daily care and rehabilitation in Maine. In June of the same year, his mother was diagnosed with throat cancer, which had Tom running back and forth to Albany to assist in taking his Mom to chemotherapy treatments and other doctor appointments.Taking on all of these new responsibilities, on top of running his own law firm, was extremely overwhelming. Given the utter lack of even minimal help from other family members in dealing with his brother's accident and other issues, Tom returned to his reliance on alcohol and drugs as a crutch to keep up with all of these demands. This resulted in Tom winding up at rehab in upstate New York in May of 2011. When he entered rehab he was 140 pounds, had bleeding gums from frequent cocaine use, cardiac and pulmonary problems from smoking two packs of cigarettes a day, and was near bankruptcy. There was no doubt Tom was a mess. When he left rehab one month later, Tom was 177 pounds with a muffin top, his gums were healing, and he faced the challenge of cleaning up the messes created in every aspect of his life.Nutrition, exercise and a regular twelve-step practice have helped Tom overcome these obstacles. In the last five years, he has rarely been sick; he set out to eat right and exercise every day and on August 1, 2015, Tom won a physique contest for men over 35.Tom has made all his financial amends and no longer has the specter of bankruptcy hanging over his head. He was certified as a personal trainer in sports nutrition and weight management, all while maintaining a thriving law practice. After two years of freedom from alcohol and drugs, Tom was able to give up cigarettes and nicotine. In 2013, Tom graduated from the Institute for Integrated Nutrition. He has been free of alcohol and drugs since May 11, 2011, and cigarettes and nicotine since September 27, 2013. Tom measures his success by the differences between the life he was living when I entered rehab and his life today. It seems like looking back on a different person and a different lifetime. Through the grace of God, and by utilizing the twelve-steps and tools in this book, Tom was able to achieve his goals of sobriety and overall health.Website: https://www.spiritualadrenaline.comsFacebook: https://facebook.com/SpiritualAdrenaline/Instagram: @Spiritual_AdrTwitter: @spiritualadrenYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZn-be9v4Qhi2QwAQOZI57AMore info – http://unpauseyourlife.comSponsored by:The Addictions Academy – The Nation's Leading Accredited Addiction Coaching & Intervention Training: https://theaddictionsacademy.com/Music courtesy of Crowfly – http://crowflyrocks.com/
We have a little departure from our normal broadcasts, as Rick Gosselin, Tom Shanahan and Jesse Goldberg-Strassler gather to discuss their football books from August Publications. The three esteemed authors gather to discuss their books, why they decided to cover football and its impact on culture, and how they saw their books make an impact in the football world. Goodfellows, The Champions of St. Ambrose, showcases a true football glory story of guts and heart spanning nearly a decade. Through faith, fight and perhaps fate, the Giant Killers of little St. Ambrose High School rise as titans of their terrain and end up leaving a legacy millions of young boys and coaches aspire to but very few attain. St. Ambrose High, one of the most storied programs in high-school-football history, didn't even have it's own football field. But success pulsated from the three-story building in Detroit between 1957 and 1967, when tiny St. Ambrose produced five football All-Americas, 12 all-state performers, and future NFL players and Super Bowl champs. They were products of this legendary place where old-fashioned values reigned, where teamwork triumphed over individual glory, and where football was the glue of this community. The third edition of Goodfellows features a foreword from Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy and a new introduction from Detroit native, Michigan State University All-America and Pro Football Hall of Famer Joe DeLamielleure. It's a world filled with armchair quarterbacks, designer blitzes, the Hogs, and Purple People Eaters. The colorful language of America's Game—football—is the subject of The Football Thesaurus from broadcaster Jesse Goldberg-Strassler, now out in a second edition.Field generals throw back-shoulder passes to vertical threats, working off the bump and run. Penalties were originally signaled by horns, not flags. Tailbacks follow the big uglies to paydirt for a touchdown.Football is a sport with its own lingo and jargon – a colorful patois that's developed over the years and millions of games, college and pro, with today's broadcasters developing their own descriptions of America's Game. In The Football Thesaurus, a fascinating compendium of football terms, Jesse Goldberg-Strassler—broadcaster, storyteller, talker, voice—explains what football terms mean and how they came to be. When Jimmy Raye enrolled at Michigan State University in 1964, he did more than just enroll in a university hundreds of miles from his native Fayetteville, N.C.: he was part of a groundbreaking movement that changed college football forever. His story, as well as his Spartan teammates and coach Duffy Daugherty, is told in Raye of Light: Jimmy Raye, Duffy Daugherty, The Integration of College Football, and the 1965-66 Michigan State Spartans. History has not accorded Daugherty, Raye, and the Spartans proper credit for their roles in the integration of college football. Too many view Daugherty as recruiting a couple of All-American players from the South, winning a bunch of games with his 1965-66 teams and then having it all come to an end.All three books are from August Publications.

Spiritual Adrenaline with Tom Shanahan Over 9 years ago Tom's substance abuse and the stresses of being a trial attorney landed him in treatment where he was introduced to the 12 Step program of Alcoholics Anonymous. Almost immediately, he recognized the importance of health and fitness in his own sobriety journey, which lead Tom to write the book, "Spiritual Adrenaline: A Lifestyle Plan to Nourish and Strengthen Your Recovery. Tom says, "The lifestyle changes need to be made, we're recovering from a lot more than just substances, the substance was trying to cover up the poor lifestyle choices." The book highlights research that seems to indicate that these same kinds of changes can be a huge benefit to those struggling with substance abuse and then lays out a process that integrates the 12 Steps with a healthy lifestyle. Sobriety Blueprint Podcast: Episode #6 - Health, Fitness & The 12 Step Connection with Tom Shanahan Over 8 years ago Tom's substance abuse and the stresses of being a trial attorney landed him in treatment where he was introduced to the 12 Step program of Alcoholics Anonymous. He Immediately recognized the importance of health and fitness in his own sobriety journey, which lead Tom to write the book, "Spiritual Adrenaline: A Lifestyle Plan to Nourish and Strengthen Your Recovery." The book is filled with research and points out many lesser known links between 12 Step programs and physical health, including the fact that Bill Wilson, co-founder of AA had at one point started putting together a list of foods and supplements that should be used by alcoholics if they wanted to stay sober. When Tom speaks to the importance of making fitness and nutrition a working part of the recovery process he says, "The lifestyle changes need to be made, we're recovering from a lot more than just the substance. The substance was trying to cover up the poor lifestyle choices." Spiritual Adrenaline is a process which integrates the 12 Steps with "outside issues" like healthy lifestyle choices. Related studies have been clear that these same kinds of lifestyle changes can be a huge benefit to those struggling with substance abuse and can contribute to long-term sobriety. Tom also founded Spiritual Adrenaline Adventures which organizes 12 Step based vacations for those looking for more excitement in sobriety. The next destination will be the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu in April of 2020. You can connect with Tom on Facebook or find him on Instagram @spiritual_adr.
