Hello to the wonderful listeners! Thank you for joining me for this fantastic episode featuring the amazing Zack Miles. As a singer-songwriter, Zack’s music has a depth and sincerity that is felt from the first note, and I think hearing more of his story (which is what almost this entire first half of our interview focuses on) will give even more weight and context to his two studio albums. Make sure to follow Zack on social media, look for the second episode next week and be streaming the tunes until then! ALSO, please vote and make sure others are registered to vote. Today’s show features some more goodness, as Elijah and I talk on the points of what live shows will look like for him, the Lost Dreamers Productions project that he and Olivia are creating, and the importance of deep friendship and connection. I’ve missed you, To/From listeners! I hope that you have been safe and that you are healthy since we last met, here in podcast land. The hiatus felt important, in the wake of so much injustice being on display, and I wanted to quiet this space so that folks (including myself) could be listening to, learning from and acting alongside Black voices and justice movements. We’ll talk a little more about that in this episode, a show that is actually a special feed-drop from the Patreon-only podcast “The Freakin’ Radcast”. I hope that you are taking care of those around you, as well as being a part of the change that we so desperately need in this time and in this country. I love you all and there will be lots of To/From goodness in the days to come. Check out the link below if you wish to become a patron and support the creative work that I do (but maybe consider this after donating money and time to organizations and folks that are hurting in these trying times)!https://www.patreon.com/gradymilligan
Hello To/From listeners! Today’s episode features songs and conversation with Knoxville’s own Travis Bigwood! Travis and I wandered into so many different topics including his love of history, his father’s work ethic, stepping into the songwriting and band worlds, boxing, skateboarding and more. One thing that became clear, before and after the mic’s had been turned on, was that Travis cares about the community that art becomes. We spent a lot of time returning to this picture of how the songs or pieces that an artist creates are almost like a town or city that folks might reside in or pass through with fond memories and new perspective. I hope you’ll take the time to subscribe to all of Travis Bigwood and The Lonesome Doves’ pages and social media profiles, and don’t forget to stream the tunes at the Spotify link below:https://open.spotify.com/artist/3Eg88RNB1auS11scjrF3C4?si=SHN_7R6NSXG_kw9E0gV8KwCheck out the Facebook page of Travis Bigwood and The Lonesome Doves and the video for “Track Record” at the links below:https://www.facebook.com/TravisBigwoodandTheLonesomeDoves/https://www.facebook.com/travis.bigwood/videos/10223139890471620/

Hi there, all of you amazing To/From listeners! There’s quite a bit of goodness packed into today’s relatively shorter show, as y’all are in for the wonderful treat of conversation + the beautiful, original music from Nashville’s Emily McMichael! Even though I’ve only known Emily since our first show together in late 2019, I have quickly become a very big fan of both McMichael’s killer songwriting as well as her kind and friendly spirit. Emily produces and writes and performs amazingly atmospheric songs full of authenticity, so do yourselves a favor and follow her on Spotify / Facebook / and Instagram @emilalalalalaBe sure to stream “Unknown Caller” and “Two Week Notice” — as well as all of Emily’s music, links below:Two Week Noticehttps://open.spotify.com/track/2lOHVGrC80KSEeF7G3RfbY?si=0TlL8twdTqKvjFevi3-kDgUnknown Callerhttps://open.spotify.com/track/3CAKszePb3LdUi4COZ7ulO?si=ugSA4mXISq66PCGeZIMMqA
Thank you for joining me for this week’s To/From! You know, sometimes you’re reminded just how grateful you are to have friends that overflow with kindness and a love for what they do. Evie Andrus is one such person, and this episode’s interview was a goofiness-filled reminder of the impact my friend makes in this world. Evie is a world-class fiddler, lives a life of adventure and creative shenanigans and always pursues the passion for music. You can just tell, in any amount of time spent with Evie, that her own joy from music is ready to overflow to any that will listen. I hope you enjoy today’s show and PLEASE do yourself a favor by watching all of Evie’s livestreams on Facebook, she’s bringing a lot of smiles in a time when we can all use them.Check out Evie’s official website, and the site for her band Buffalo Fiasco below:https://evieandrusmusic.com/https://buffalofiasco.com/

We cover some heavy ground, regarding our personal journeys within organized religion, so let this be a bit of a content warning if that’s a hard topic for you. Also, this episode features two of Adeem’s songs (the second of which is a special unreleased version of Learning To Drive Again), but you really just need to take a few afternoons and listen to this songwriter’s whole catalogue. Friends! I’ve been looking forward to this episode for months — Kelsi Walker, singer-songwriter extraordinaire, has taken over To/From this week! I think you’ll really enjoy this conversation that, if I’m honest, had me quite nervous (as Kelsi kept her plans and questions secret from me). Also, stay tuned for another episode later this week featuring (drum roll) the show’s first listener mail excerpts! This is something I want to become a BIG part of this podcast, so please consider joining the conversations online and via the email below.I would love to hear from you, so please always feel free to send thoughts, stories or questions to gradymilligancreative@gmail.comA REMINDER: Please make sure that you are staying safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. Love people and make choices that help keep the most vulnerable among us safe.I love you all — look for more content this week and throughout this crisis, as I want to do my part to bring encouragement and meaningful conversation and song to you amidst the difficult season.
Welcome back, all you lovely To/From listeners! I AM WAY TO EXCITED ABOUT THIS EPISODE! Meet my pal, Zack Roskop! Zack has done a little bit of everything… like everything. This kind and excited dude is full of so much passion for such a long list of stuff and, as so many Knoxville folks know, one of the biggest of those passions is the love of beer culture. The Knox Brew Tours business, Zack’s amazing brain child, has already had such an impact on the Knoxville beer scene and beyond. In this conversation, we discuss so many of the individual experiences in Zack’s story but also some of the overarching themes of desiring to try much, as well as the fear of not trying things on the horizon. In both the chat and in knowing my friend, Zack holds a truly contagious fervor for life and what possibilities exist. I love this thought that was reflected upon: that life is more about chasing our authentic self than just about anything else. So many of our dreams and relational growth and the way we can affect community is naturally grown and cultivated in finding who we really are. Life is hard y’all, let the bitter and sweet (as we’ll get into in our beer analogies) mingle together. And sometimes you should just have a beer, eat something you love, take a shower and stop being so hard on yourself. Love you all so much. Thank you for being here. Check out so many things that Zack and the Knox Brew Tours family have going on at their website below: https://www.knoxbrewtours.com/
Welcome back! It’s 2020 and the beginning of our second year, here at The To and From Podcast! What a surreal and lovely thing. Thank you for being a part!!! Today’s episode features a wonderful conversation with The Montvales, and it cannot be overstated how much fun I had talking with this band. Molly and Sally create songs that lean into the best parts of country music, the sound just feels like it comes right from both of their lives, stories, and the roots of places they love. I hope you enjoy the authenticity and care that these creatives work from and that you can just feel as they talk and share. Don’t forget to follow The Montvales on all of your social media, stay on the lookout for new music, and make sure to see them live as often as you can! Here’s a link for a fantastic song and music video, for your viewing delight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLceFCRrJkI
This one is a doozy, folks. I have been thinking about this chat for a month, so pumped to share it with all of you. Bud and Melody Winderweedle are amazing humans that just carry an energy of welcome and love that is palpable. They lead and co-pastor a community in Chattanooga called Ekklesia, and it’s humming with good stuff. Bud and I talked about so many things (and didn’t even get to some of the cool things I like about him, not least of which is the fact that he brews beer), but I think we both summed it up in the desire to keep digging for the real and for hope. This is basically a podcast tag-team with To/From and Bud’s new project, the Roots & Branches podcast. It was a delightful experience to co-interview one another, I hope you’ll be uplifted by it.Check out the Roots & Branches podcast at the link below and everywhere you stream!http://ekklesiavineyard.com/roots-branches/If you’re in Chattanooga and want to hangout with a safe, open and welcoming community of folks that want to see love and justice flow, I think Ekklesia is wonderful. Find Bud as @budwinderweedle on Twitter.See you very soon!
Today’s guest, Silicone Boone, is releasing some truly amazing stuff into the world. The upcoming album, The Reaches, is an epic journey, one comprised of deep layers. And that won’t surprise anyone that’s spent any time with this talented songwriter. I was lucky enough to spend an afternoon in the beautiful town of Campbellsville, Kentucky, where we delved into some of this artist’s story and the creation of all this new space-inspired music. I hope y’all soak up all the goodness in both songs, before and after the interview, and please make sure to go follow Silicone Boone in preparation for this wonderful album’s release. Drummer, audio engineer, driver to hot chicken restaurants..... Chris Hickman..... This dude is one of the best friends I've ever had. Not kidding, friends. It brings me a lot of joy to share this rich and wandering conversation that I was able to record with Chris, in the very room that made most of this year's songs possible. I love the Hickman's story, I'm thankful that Jenn and Chris let me crash in their home and take weekends to make music, and I really hope that you'll get encouragement from this chat about change, adaptation, and wanting to see meaningful art live. Chris also did a great job describing his journey into understanding his personality more, I enjoyed talking to another person that relates to the personality of the 6 on the enneagram (see the recent Michael episode). Chris is a courageous human, I hope you all get to chill with him someday. Also, Chris plays video games foolishly, you'll hear what I'm talking about towards the end. Okay. Try things that are challenging, folks. Peace to you!Listen to the last song Chris helped me record and release, Talons, everywhere music is sold and streamed!
This should be fun, folks! My dear friend Becky Carlyle returns to The To and From Podcast for the first wonderful chat about food (my favorite thing, people). We'll discuss the welcoming space that food creates, the struggles with shame and tension in food, and why delicious meals can subversively heal so much that's busted. It's a good time, people! If you’re a patron on www.patreon.com/gradymilligan you can keep a lookout in your inboxes for some extra conversation clips soon AND some tasty food recipes!
Michael Carnes is an indie folk artist from Knoxville, TN and is now based in Athens, GA. Michael’s roots came from growing up listening to punk music while also being surrounded by local folk acts in the Bible Belt. Because of this, he has meshed the two influences into a musical style that encompasses themes of self worth, love, and negotiating with God.
Welcome, one and all, to another episode of The To and From Podcast! Today’s show is a little bit of a reversal, as I (Grady) am actually going to be the interviewee. Jon Pemberton… What to say about this mythical creature? I suppose I’ll start by saying that Jon has always been one of those people that, when you’re with them, you really wish it was a constant occurrence. As an experienced artist, husband, father and teacher, I love the ease with which Pemberton can talk about nerdy or transformative things. So I know you’ll enjoy this extended chat with Jon about everything from heavy metal shows performed by robots to how creative approaches to teaching can give hope that surpasses what we thought we were capable of.Jon Pemberton is a wonderful teacher (his official title is Reading Interventionist, Special Education at Sevier County High School). He’s been married to Elisabeth for 12 years with two kids: Owen (8) and Ashlynn (5).You should definitely follow Jon’s Instagram: @knoxfoundart (especially since he sometimes leaves pieces of art at secret locations shown there).Jon gave me some details for upcoming places to see his artwork, see below (and then go see in person):- “I have a show at RALA in the Old City on Friday, August 2nd (First Friday) with a reception from 5-8pm.”- “I have a show at IJAMS Nature Center for the First Friday in October, can't remember the actual date.”Jon wants you to know that you can find him at multiple local dumpsters in the greater Knoxville area on most weekends. Join the dumpster diving team, folks!
This is a very exciting episode, friends! We’re diving deep into FAILURE, yet I’m excited about it because my friend Becky Carlyle is our guide! We’re gonna dig-in together to discuss our need to deal with failure, perfectionism and more in healthier waysThere are WAY too many helpful notes in this chat to catalogue here, so consider giving this one a few repeat listens. Don’t be afraid to bust out the journal or notebook, friends.Becky has been married for 17 years, she’s a mom of three kids, and works as a psychology and counseling instructor with a background in marriage and family therapy. Becky loves nothing more than sitting around with people and telling stories (and cooking for them). She’s an Enneagram 2w1. ENFJ. Becky says she “drinks too much coffee and laughs too loudly”….. and we love her for it.Becky said that interested folks should check out all the works of Dr. Brene Brown and Dr. Carol Dweck.
I love this dude. Alberto is one of those folks that walks into your life and you just know you’ll be friends for the long haul. Through songwriting, leading worship in many contexts together and goofing off a lot, I’ve experienced the softly-spoken, deep wells that Bert lives from. I hope you’ll enjoy this comfy chat, in which we’ll explore how living and growing in multiple cultures and contexts has shaped my adventurous friend.A cool thing to note, the little guitar jam late in the episode is an original riff from this guy… love it.Alberto is currently living in Ohio and works as the Worship Coordinator for La Viña at Vineyard Columbus. Thanks for joining me on another episode of the To and From Podcast! I had such a blast recording this chat with my friend, Brandon McBath. Honestly, we could probably talk for 3 hours minimum every time we’re in the same room. In addition to our shared love of nerd culture, song-craft and more, I think a deep love of people making impactful work has brought us together. Brandon is a person with vision and I’m thankful for his inspiration and creativity. You can see his work at his website www.brandonmcbath.workYou can also follow @mcbeezy16 on all social media platforms.Brandon has been an artist since his middle school days and now he’s a full-time art teacher to middle schoolers at Concord Christian School. He’s also a part-time youth pastor at Beech Grove Baptist Church.
Welcome back, friends! It's time for the first full-length episode, here at The To and From Podcast. I am so glad to share this chat with the always-wonderful, Lindsay Mizell. As a trusted friend and the Pastor of Vineyard Church Springbrook, Lindsay has been a steady and catalyzing voice in my life for years now. Lindsay writes and speaks life-enriching stuff into the world on the regular, drawing from a love of story, music and more. I expect you'll hear more from her in episodes to come. Today we laugh and reflect upon Lindsay's childhood adventures and some of her journey in finding her own voice. Also! Here’s the kinda-random, really awesome list of things and folks that Lindsay brought up in the episode:BOOKSBird by Bird by Anne Lamott, An American Childhood by Annie Dillard, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek by Anne DillardPODCASTSDefinitely check out the works of Malcolm Gladwell including Revisionist History and Broken Record (great podcasts) and many books. Trinity Anglican has a great sermon feed, Adam Russell is the host of The Ferment Podcast and his weekly sermons are at Vineyard Campbellsville’s apple podcast feed.OTHERTo know Lindsay is to hear about her favorite band The Boxer Rebellion, so go check them out. Also, and obviously, you need to go listen to, watch and read the work of Brené Brown.
Welcome to this new journey, friends! In this introductory episode of "The To and From Podcast", I'll be talking a little about why I felt it was time to begin this new experiment and sharing about some personal growth. ALSO, stay tuned through the end to hear one of my new, soon-to-be-released tunes. Thank you for spending some time with me!
