Discipline (Four Way Books, 2024), Debra Spark's latest novel was inspired by the life of Walt Kuhn, who introduced Americans to modern art, and also by an infamous east coast boarding school that was forcibly shut down in 2014. The novel twists and turns through the lives of an artist and his wife, a teenager forced to attend a horrifying boarding school, the artist and his wife's lonely daughter after their deaths, and a divorced art appraiser studying the works of the dead artist. Discipline addresses teenagers whose lives are molded by thoughtless adults and women who struggle with loneliness or are taken advantage of by the unscrupulous. It's a coming-of-age story, a mystery about an art theft, but this gorgeous novel is also about family, ambition, and suffering. DEBRA SPARK is the author of five novels, two collections of short stories, and two books of essays on fiction writing. Her most recent books are the novel Unknown Caller and the essay collection And Then Something Happened. With Deborah Joy Corey, she co-edited Breaking Bread, a book of food essays by Maine writers to raise funds for a hunger nonprofit. Her short work has appeared in Agni, AWP Writers' Chronicle, the Boston Globe, the Cincinnati Review, the Chicago Tribune, Epoch, Esquire, Five Points, Food and Wine, Harvard Review, Huffington Post, Maine Magazine, Narrative, New England Travel and Life, the New England Review, the New York Times, Ploughshares, salon.com, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Washington Post, Yankee, and Yale Alumni Quarterly, among other places. In addition to writing book reviews, fiction, articles, and essays, she spent a decade writing about home, art, and design for Maine Home+Design, Decor Maine, Down East, Dwell, Elysian, Interiors Boston, New England Home, and Yankee. She writes a monthly book review column of French books in English translation for Frenchly.us. She has been the recipient of several awards including Maine's 2017 READ ME series, a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, a Bunting Institute fellowship from Radcliffe College, Wisconsin Institute Fellowship, Pushcart Prize, Michigan Literary Fiction Award, and John Zacharis/Ploughshares award for best first book. A graduate of Yale University and the Iowa Writers' Workshop, she is a professor at Colby College and teaches in the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College. When she's not working, Spark exercises, studies French, spends time with friends and family, bakes gluten-free, and belongs to a cookbook book club. Learn more about your ad choices. In this nineteenth installment of fictional horror written and narrated by Dan Cummins.... we head to New Orleans, where a man is found in dead in his home that he had boarded up in the final days of his life. He'd also smashed his phones and TV and posted sticky notes all over the walls, many of them centered on being tormented by something that was calling him on the phone. And then the phone of one of the paramedics declaring the man dead starts to ring. An unknown caller. The first of many, many, many calls from this increasingly disturbing unknown caller...This episode was scored by Logan Keith. Debra Spark is the award-winning author of five novels, including Unknown Caller, which was picked for Maine's statewide summer READ ME program. She has also published two collections of short stories; and two books of essays on fiction writing called And Then Something Happened and Curious Attractions. Her book reviews, short fiction, articles, op-eds, and essays have appeared in Agni, American Scholar, AWP Writers' Chronicle, and the Boston Globe among others. Her new novel is Discipline. She is the Zacamy Professor of English at Colby College and teaches in the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College. The strip search phone call scam was a series of incidents, mainly in small US towns, that lasted for 10 years, beginning in 1994. An unknown male caller would phone a restaurant, claiming to be a police officer would convince managers to conduct strip searches of employees, and to perform other bizarre and humiliating acts on behalf of "the police". More than 70 such phone calls were reported in 30 US states before finally coming to an end in 2004 with an arrest.SOURCESLouise Ogborn v. Letter to Mike Webber re Terry Thompson Still looking for Terry Thompson notes but found cub age / size chart Jamie did that may be helpful. https://bigcatrescue.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Tigers2-12weeks_Blackbox.jpg What I remember from the call was that it was approaching dusk here and I was walking across the field out by the Party House when a call came in as UNKNOWN. The man on the other end was screaming, "I hate you but I hate them more!" I get a lot of rabid calls from crazy cat people so I rarely take note of their ramblings unless they will give me something concrete that I can use. He was screaming, and just about every other word was foul and abusive cursing, but he was saying that everything I had suspected about how these cubs are bred, trucked across country with no permits or record keeping, used as pay to play props and then how they would just disappear was all true. He said he knew it was true because he had been the one trucking them around the country between doc Antle, Joe Exotic, Kathy Stearns, Mario Tabraue, Gregg Woody, (another name that I recognized at the time but have forgotten now that he's long gone out of business) and a whole bunch of names that I either didn't know, or couldn't remember because he was firing them off so fast in between curses. He said that he trucked baby tigers and other baby wild animals from coast to coast for all of the big guys on a regular basis because they were all a network of cub pimps who kept each other stocked so that they all always had cubs to offer. He said many of them died in transit and that the conditions on both ends were often horrific. He said cubs that outgrew the pay to play stage were often sold or given away to anyone who would take them but that a lot of them just disappeared. He said they often died or were killed. He said all of the players knew that there was no enforcement of the laws and they all knew how to circumvent the authorities. This was at a time when it was still legal to be moving cubs of any age across state lines, as long as there was a USDA license at each end of the transfer to act as the middle man for anyone who wasn't. I remember asking him to put it in writing because I wasn't where I could write it down. He just kept screaming that he was sick of these people and that he wanted me to shut them down. I told him (because I tell everyone) that I can't do anything based on what he tells me; I have to have it in writing, with names, dates, particulars that I can go on to make a case. He said I could quote him because he didn't care what any of them thought now, but I remember telling him that wasn't enough. I couldn't just say, "this guy told me..." and have it do any good. He may have felt his name would make a difference, but I don't remember him telling me his name, and even if he had, I probably wouldn't have known who he was, since he would not have been on my radar given the fact he'd been in jail. I could hardly understand him because he was so angry and was going on a mile a minute. I figured he'd email me if he was serious. I didn't think much of it. Even the next day, when I awoke to the news of the Zanesville Massacre, I didn't immediately connect the two events, because it was weeks, if not months, before the story was fully known. Once I had a better understanding of what had happened in Zanesville, it left me wondering if that call had been from Terry Thompson. I remember trying to go back through my cell phone's past calls to see if I could tell if the call was from OH but I couldn't as no information appeared on a lot of calls marked UNKNOWN CALLER. I didn't have much reason to try and document the call at the time because all I had was hearsay and if the police had found my number on Terry's phone, I figured they would call me. I didn't know we'd be doing a movie about it 6 years later where it would have been pertinent for me to ask if Jack Hanna was one of his clients. I wish I had more, but sans hypnosis, this is about it. For the cats, Carole Baskin, CEO of Big Cat Rescue Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views. These are my views and opinions. If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story. The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/ I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story. My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet. Vicky was picking up her five year old daughter when the unknown caller told her, her life was about to change forever. She hung up and told her friend it was just a crank call and rushed into the community centre to pick up Chloe from her play group. On the way home she couldn't stop thinking about the callers tone of voice. He seemed to be taunting her, but how did he know her daughters name and the play group she attended. It wasn't a threatening call but he did seem to know too much about her to be a total stranger. That afternoon she received the second call. “Hello Vicky, I saw you got home safely with Chloe and your friend. Now, I know you're confused but I need you to listen very carefully. I know more about you and your family than you will ever comprehend, and if you want to keep them safe, you will do EXACTLY as I say. Do you understand Vicky...?” “Who are you...? What do you want...?” “All in good time Vicky, but first I need you to understand that this is not a joke or crank call. Your husband Liam will be home at five thirty and you will act perfectly normal, prepare the dinner as usual and go to bed at nine thirty to read your book.” “How do you know what time I go to bed...? Who the hell are you...?” “And Vicky, I must stress... you will not say anything about these calls to Liam or else your beautiful little daughter Chloe may have to go away for a while.” “WHAT...! What are you talking about...?” “I'll call you back tomorrow with your first set of instructions and check your mail tomorrow morning.” Excerpt from Chapter 1 At the car park she walked to the bench and sat down, looking all around to see who could be watching, but the area was deserted. At one o'clock the phone rang, “Yes... I’m here.” “Hmm m... Very nice Vicky, now stand up and turn around so I can see your lovely long legs and bottom.” “So you can see me..!” “Oh yes... I've been watching you a lot lately, especially at home in your house.” “In my house…! What are you talking about...?” “Oh yes, I'm an electronics surveillance expert... I can switch on microphones and cameras on your computers, phones and well... I can't tell you any more or else we won't be able to play... So stand up and do a nice slow twirl for me.” Vicky stood up, scanning all around as she slowly turned full circle. Nobody was in sight, only woods and open roads with not even any cars parked. “You’re truly beautiful Vicky now sit down and part your legs.” “WHAT…!” “You heard Vicky, part your legs and sit back on the bench... I want to see your stocking tops and knickers.” Direct link to book --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dantes-erotica/message

Well 2020 really threw a wrench into things eh? Chelle and Lisa are finally back to give you the first episode for Season 2!!! In 1981, 23-year-old Diane Werendowicz was murdered on her short walk home after leaving a local bar one night in Hamilton, Ontario. But her case goes cold for 17 years. It wasn’t until the advances in DNA forensics and an old piece of audio that investigators could finally name a suspect. But even with DNA and one piece of audio, does it really tell us what happened? This proved to be the issue at trial, which led this case to be the most trials for the same 1st degree murder in Canada. Would you be able to identify a voice from 17 years ago? Tune in as Lisa shares this week’s episode on Whose Crime Is It Anyway? **This was our first time recording remotely, so bear with us if the sound quality isn’t what you’re used to hearing from us! Hi there, all of you amazing To/From listeners! There’s quite a bit of goodness packed into today’s relatively shorter show, as y’all are in for the wonderful treat of conversation + the beautiful, original music from Nashville’s Emily McMichael! Even though I’ve only known Emily since our first show together in late 2019, I have quickly become a very big fan of both McMichael’s killer songwriting as well as her kind and friendly spirit. Emily produces and writes and performs amazingly atmospheric songs full of authenticity, so do yourselves a favor and follow her on Spotify / Facebook / and Instagram @emilalalalalaBe sure to stream “Unknown Caller” and “Two Week Notice” — as well as all of Emily’s music, links below:Two Week Noticehttps://open.spotify.com/track/2lOHVGrC80KSEeF7G3RfbY?si=0TlL8twdTqKvjFevi3-kDgUnknown Callerhttps://open.spotify.com/track/3CAKszePb3LdUi4COZ7ulO?si=ugSA4mXISq66PCGeZIMMqA

Some bad news this week. Kristin has decided she doesn't want to podcast about Handmaid's Tale anymore. In her own words: Hey all... I’m sure you’ve noticed there has been no episode this past week... I’m exhausted. Seriously tired! Summer is here, we have house guests all summer, my husband is gearing up for yet another trip, and as I usually can handle all things at all times, I have to let some things go right now to keep my sanity. Handmaids Tale season 3 coverage is one of them. It’s been very difficult to find a weekly cohost, and with my kids always around, it’s hard to prep the way I like to prep with a show that’s so inappropriate for little eyes and ears. So, it’s a perfect storm at my house right now! I would love to continue to hash out the episodes week to week in thread form if you’d like, but for now, I truly hope you can understand this not so easy decision. Love to all, Kristin xo The good news is, the podcast will go on. Please welcome Dianna (who cohosted with Kristin last time) and Liz. These two podcasters have graciously agreed to step in and finish out the season. It's not easy following Kristin, but I'm thankful they agreed to do it. They're great podcasters and passionate about the show, and so please show them a warm welcome. Since we didn't have an episode last week, Liz and Dianna will be covering Handmaid's Tale season 3 episodes 5 and 6, "Unknown Caller" and "Household". Adrian Snow, Lauren Hubbard, and Kittie KaBoom break down season 3 episode 5 of The Handmaid's Tale "Unknown Caller" in which June and Serena grapple with a new revelation about Nichole, leading to an incident that could have far-reaching ramifications. The Handmaid's Tale After Show: Are you ready to enter the dystopian world of Gilead? In the HANDMAID’S TALE AFTER SHOW we discuss this totalitarian society’s attempt to repopulate a devastated world by forcing women into sexual servitude and treating them as property. Tune in here for reviews, recaps and in-depth discussions of the latest episodes, as well as the insider scoop from cast and crew members on the show. ABOUT THE HANDMAID'S TALE: Based on the bet-selling novel by Margaret Atwood, this series is set in Gilead, a totalitarian society in what used to be part of the United States. Gilead is ruled by a fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state, and is faced with environmental disasters and a plummeting birth rate. In a desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world, the few remaining fertile women are forced into sexual servitude. One of these women, Offred, is determined to survive the terrifying world she lives in, and find the daughter that was taken from her. What the hell, Serena? Episode 5, Unknown Caller, left us divided on Serena's motivations and in awe of June's mental fortitude. We're drinking Changeling, a dark sour ale, to match the sour taste the episode left us with. But we got to watch June enjoy music and we geek out at the first book nod to The Handmaid's Tale being recorded by June on old mixtapes. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/TheRedResistance)
On this episode of Resisting Gilead I'm joined by W Axel Foley, the producer and host of 'The Daily DVR' and 'Big Little Lies" podcasts to discuss the latest episode of The Handmaid's Tale, Unknown Caller. "Commander" DJ Timm Hines provides feedback on the episode as well.

Episode 105: When The Narrators first started in Denver over six and a half years ago, storytelling shows were few and far between. There were poets and memoirists sharing true stories at open mics, and the oral traditionalists have always been around, at historical gatherings or elementary school assemblies, but personal narrative just wasn't a common thing. Today, Denver—along with many other cities in America—is exploding with new storytelling shows and projects. Established shows in Denver like us and Stories Stories Bring Us Your Stories, My Teenage Angst, Truth Be Told in Boulder and The Moth Story Slam in Englewood are still going strong, and there are so many new shows and events and podcasts and projects popping up that it's tough to keep up—there's The Raconteurs, This is My Brave, Misunderstood, We Still Like You, and we know of at least two more that will launch in the next 12 months. Here's the best part—there's more than enough room for all of us. Even though we're all ostensibly doing the same thing—sharing true personal narratives—each show has its own flavor and theme and feel, it's own attraction for both the performer and audience. All of us at The Narrators are excited about this, because it offers folks more places to share their stories and find their voice, and because it confirms what we've believed all along: people are longing for opportunities to build empathy, to listen and to connect. So, today, we're doing something a little different. We're going to share a story from one of those newer storytelling projects in town. It's called Unknown Caller. It's a podcast that collects stories anonymously via voicemail—no standing behind a microphone, no spotlights, no crowd of strangers—you just call in to their hotline and start talking. Unknown Caller is the brainchild of Cory Byrom, a storytelling alum of The Narrators, Risk!, and The Iceberg in Atlanta. The podcast has published 13 episodes so far and they're all worth a listen. You can subscribe to Unknown Caller on iTunes or SoundCloud, and find them on Facebook or Twitter (@1UnknownCaller). Let them know we sent you! A lot of you believe that Russell sealed his fate in this episode. The attacks on Rupert and Danielle were indications that he still has not mastered the art of winning the jury. Others saw it as nothing more than further evidence of his dominance in the game. The contrasting views are abundant. Several of you asked if maybe Colby is actually playing smart and under the radar even offering evidence of this fact when most of us are willing to write him off for continually disappointing us. That is exactly why we offer the LF feedback show, so we can all benefit from different perspectives and sometimes gain validation for our theories about what has happened and what we can expect next through the eyes of others! For each episode, we provide 3 podcasts: an episode recap, an interview with the castoff and a chance for Survivor fans like yourself to sound off on what you saw and how you think the castaways are fairing in the game.
