Season 4, Episode 13In today's culture, everyone is an activist. People have zeal for numerous causes, but it's sometimes not easy to translate that zeal into real action of doing small things. Real life compassion in action is often not glamorous - it's behind the scenes, and it requires investment over the long haul. Today we are joined by two folks who know a lot about the real work of compassion. Janice has been a member of Vineyard Columbus for 25 years this Summer. She and her husband Paul will celebrate 24 years of marriage this September and live in Westerville. Janice is a licensed Doctor of Pharmacy, having graduated from the WVU School of Pharmacy 31 years ago. Since retiring from full-time work in cancer research in 2018, she maintains involvement with the WVU SOP serving as a board member on the Leadership Council. She enjoys volunteering with our VCC Health Clinic, Westerville Area Resource Ministries and also gives of her time to two local animal welfare organizations. Sammy started attending Vineyard Columbus shortly after she and her husband moved to the area in the Fall of 2021. Sammy is an EMT and has a Masters in Public Health with a concentration in international health, disaster health, and emergency preparedness. Before becoming the Health Clinics Coordinator at Vineyard Columbus, Sammy worked on a disaster assistance response team responding to needs in several countries including Mongolia, Haiti, and Ukraine. She also spent time working on a critical care ambulance in Los Angeles, California. In her free time, she enjoys gardening, biking, traveling, and cooking.Next week, Vineyard Columbus is launching into Compassion Week – a time we get to serve our communities and love our city. Last year we were able to help over 50,000 people, and this summer we're hoping to make that number even greater! Maybe you're in the Central Ohio area and you're looking for ways to demonstrate compassion in action. You can sign up for one of our upcoming opportunities to serve our city during Compassion Week, August 6 - 12. We've got everything from park clean-ups to sitting on your couch, ordering things off an Amazon wish list for a neighborhood elementary school. In this episode of We Are Vineyard, Jay chats with Nicole Dill about being born into a party, reading in the corners of bars and clubs where her dad played music, and how her life as a spiritually-seeking preteen eventually led her to a defining encounter with the Holy Spirit. Nicole shares about learning to trust the Lord to guide the expression her calling takes in different seasons of life, and the way all of her different experiences and roles are being utilized in her current position as the Communications Director for Vineyard USA. They discuss the discipline and gift of anchoring into community, the value in bringing exactly who you are to your local church, and the joy of being a conduit and a resource for the kingdom of God. Nicole Dill is the Communications Director for Vineyard USA. She grew up in Columbus, Ohio, where she came to faith as a teenager, and quickly found a church family at Vineyard Columbus. In 2002, she moved to Colorado to help plant the Arvada Vineyard, and helped lead this growing church plant while finishing her degree in Photography at the Art Institute of Colorado. In 2008, Nicole planted and pastored the first multisite church for the Mile High Vineyard in downtown Denver with a team from the Arvada Vineyard. After several years of pastoring there she handed the site off to another pastor and helped several other Vineyard church plants and established churches in the Denver area. Nicole has also worked extensively outside the church leading creative teams at Anthropologie as a store designer, as Chief Operations Officer for TEDxMileHigh, the largest TEDx in North America, and for the White House as an Advance Associate for the President. She consults many growing organizations around their creative, operations, and HR needs in the nonprofit and entrepreneurial sectors. Vineyard Columbus is a church with 8,000 people in attendance on a normal Sunday. Like the rest of us, with the restrictions brought on by COVID-19, Vineyard Columbus quickly pivoted from a church that only met physically to launching their online ministry platform in a matter of days. This is a look behind the scenes at what they have learned in this short time and a look at where they are heading next.  Another very relevant and helpful episode in this challenging time!   Andrew's bio: Andrew is the Lane Avenue Campus and Online Pastor for Vineyard Columbus in Westerville, Ohio. Andrew took a roundabout way to God. Growing up with a renowned Biblical scholar for a father, he grew up skeptical of the church. He met his wife Ginny at Columbus College of Art and Design and they both graduated with degrees in Fine Arts. Five years into their marriage, they both had powerful encounters with the peace, joy and purpose available through a relationship with Jesus. While developing a professional career in sales and non-profit management, Andrew completed the Vineyard Leadership Institute and led Hear the Cry, a non-profit organization responding to the AIDS crisis in Africa. He currently serves on the board of Riverview International Center, which focuses on empowering our international neighbors by providing opportunities to access services, resources, and education. After many years of lay leadership at Vineyard, Andrew launched Vineyard Columbus – Lane Avenue in 2011 as its pastor. He is finishing a Master’s of Divinity at Asbury Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. He and Ginny live in Clintonville with their three children. Andrew is passionate about good coffee, ice cream, vegetarian cooking, building things, and riding his scooter.

Vineyard Columbus Sermons

For over 250 years, Watch Night has been celebrated as a rich and diverse tradition of Christians anticipating the new year. But what is watch night? It's believed the first watch night services were held by Moravian Christians in Eastern Europe on December 31st 1733. Two decades later English Pastor John Wesley incorporated watch night services into the Methodist Church. Over the next 100 years, watch night services grew in popularity throughout the United States in both white and African-American congregations. On the eve of President Abraham Lincoln signing the Emancipation Proclamation, free and enslaved African-Americans held watch night services throughout the country on December 31st 1862. Today, Christians from around the world gather to watch for and welcome God's presence in the new year. As a diverse Community who follows Jesus, we at Vineyard Columbus also share in this rich tradition. This New Year's Eve, Pastor Charles Montgomery preached a message titled “It’s Working”... A message on identifying and recognizing your growth through God, whether you see it or not.

There are many people in our churches doing justice with people on the margins. In this workshop, we will engage in a conversation about how the monastic tradition - and particularly the new monastic expression in the Vineyard Movement, The Order of Sustainable Faith - can help us as people and churches, at least a segment of us, to move into marginal spaces. There is so much to explore theologically (and practically) about what it would mean to serve the poor while taking a vow of poverty, for example, or to come under people in poverty and follow their lead. We will explore power dynamics, humility, engaging suffering from a place of weakness, rather than strength. Jared served as Associate Pastor at Central Vineyard Church in Columbus Ohio for 5 years before stepping down to focus on planting The Order of Sustainable Faith, a missional monastic expression in the Vineyard (beginning in 2014). In 2007, on the heels of the Justice Revival conference at Vineyard Columbus, Jared began a non-profit organization called Justice Gardens, which was committed to the production, sharing, and proper use of food. While the non-profit organization didn’t survive, it proved to be the beginning of a much deeper connection to issues of food justice. Jared’s interests are in the intersections between food, land use and the practical and theological issues of food, ecology, and agriculture. He is currently working on a book project that provides a practical theology for the church to take up the work of sustainable agriculture as part of a vocation of “new creation.”
