In this episode, Alisa interviews Dr. Yana Skorobogatov about her book, Fate in My Hands: The Death Penalty in the Soviet Union (University of Chicago Press, 2026). From 1954 to 1991 in the Soviet Union, nearly 40,000 citizens were executed after the death penalty was reinstated as a punishment for homicide. Fate in My Hands introduces readers to the many citizens in this period—women and men of all ages and backgrounds—who found themselves on death row and tried to escape it in the only way available to them: asking for forgiveness. Examining the letters and objects the dead left behind, Skorobogatov recovers their voices and allows them to speak anew. The book is a striking portrait of life in the Soviet Union and the citizens who dreamed of new possibilities even as they faced their tragic end. Lord, Prosper the Work of My Hands! "May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us—yes, establish the work of our hands." Psalm 90:17 What if the very work of your hands could be transformed into a vessel of divine prosperity? Have you ever felt that longing deep within your heart for your labor to bear fruit, not just for yourself, but for the glory of God? As we ponder this question, we invite the Spirit to move within us, leading us toward a life that honors God's calling. In Psalm 90:17, we read, “May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us.” This verse speaks to the essence of stewardship, a sacred partnership where we invite God to establish our efforts. Deuteronomy 28:12 promises that the Lord will open the heavens and bless the work of our hands. When we commit our tasks to Him, we position ourselves to receive divine endorsement — “Excellence attracts endorsement.” Psalm 78:23-24 says, "Yet He commanded the clouds above and opened the doors of the heavens. He rained down manna for them to eat; He gave them grain from heaven." Personal application doesn't stop with acknowledgment; it demands our diligence. We must cultivate a heart of excellence, embodying the understanding that “God plants; diligence waters.” Imagine Joseph, an ordinary man, who rose through the ranks in Potiphar's house (Genesis 39). Guided by his unwavering faith and work ethic, he not only managed well but transformed his environment into one that thrived. That's the power of allowing our work to be infused with God's favor. Let's take this to heart. Each time you set out to accomplish a task, remember your ownership of it; your hands are the tools God uses to create beauty in the world. When you pursue your work with clarity, consistency, and faith, you become a beacon of hope and effectiveness. By doing your best, you'll encourage others to witness God's hand at work in your life, reflecting His glory through every completed task. Styx had achieved great highs in the 1970s. Albums like The Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight and Cornerstone had all gone multi-platinum in the US thanks to hard riffs from James JY Young and Tommy Shaw and the heartfelt lyrics and vocals of Dennis DeYoung. But by 1980, tensions in the band lead to the dismissal of DeYoung for his insistence on his songs and concepts be at the forefront of the bands creative output. Chuck (bass) and John (drums) Panozzo had known Dennis since childhood and had played together for 20 years but they tried to carry on without him. However, in the end they decided to invite him back and give way to his concept of viewing the US like an old theater. You had an auspicious start with lots of promise, you had a brilliant heyday, you've seen some tough times and now it's time to find out who you are. While Shaw's Too Much Time on My Hands relates to the plight of the struggling working man, the hopeful The Best of Times offers respite from the weariness with a lover. Big riffs on Rockin' the Paradise keep the hard rockers listening and Half-Penny, Two-Penny lets James Young showcase his meatier solos. However, the second side of the album is a bit disjointed with the offputting Lonely People opening up and then a sappy She Cares. AD 1958 is a reprise to AD 1928 and the windout song State Street Sadie borrowing a bit of ragtime makes for big leaps between genres which require more than one listen. And controversy ensued when the Arkansas State Senate found satanic backward masking and issued labels on albums that did the same (including The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and more). That would spark DeYoung's next concept album Kilroy Was Here which ended up breaking the band. We like Styx and this is the first album of theirs we've reviewed and it's possible we'd do another down the road. While the band will never be our favorite, we recognize the talent - we may just not always be on board with the concept. We often remember John Newton for his wisdom, joy, and enduring hymns. But like every Christian, Newton knew seasons of profound sadness and spiritual coldness. We know this because he wrote candidly to his close friend John Berridge—the author of “The Means of Grace are in My Hands”—confessing that he was experiencing what he called a “January inside and outside.” In this opening episode of our new series, Winter of the Soul, Dr. John Snyder reads from and reflects on this short but deeply revealing letter. Newton's honesty gives hope to weary believers by showing that spiritual dullness and heaviness of heart are not signs that we have been forsaken by God, but common experiences even among the most faithful saints. In this episode, we consider how Newton diagnosed the condition of his soul, the distractions and pressures that contributed to it, and the prayer he asked his friend to offer on his behalf. Yet Newton offers little by way of immediate remedy. His letter exposes the problem more than it resolves it. While the year wasn't devoid of quality, it landed short of expectations when viewed as a whole. There were standout records. There were undeniable earworms. However, the depth simply wasn't there. Party Favorz is closing out the year with just two volumes instead of the usual three or four. That decision wasn't arbitrary. Typically, the year-end list overflows with must-have club records, forcing careful balance across multiple releases. This time, that pressure never arrived. Volume 2 may end up slightly longer—or not. That call will be made once the final mix comes together. Either way, the numbers told a clear story. The Songs That Carried 2025 To be fair, 2025 did deliver several massive Dance and Club songs that refused to leave our heads. Adjusting the Bar for a Changing Market Historically, Party Favorz has relied on combined YouTube and Spotify streaming totals, supplemented by Beatport Top 10 entries that may not dominate mainstream platforms. That approach usually paints a complete picture of the year. In 2025, however, the mega-streaming hits were fewer and farther between. To round out the Top Dance Songs of 2025, the qualification threshold was lowered to one million combined streams. That wasn't a compromise in taste. Instead, it acknowledged a shifting landscape where listener attention is more fragmented than ever. With more genre-specific releases competing for smaller slices of the audience, fewer tracks reached those runaway numbers we once took for granted. The Ultimate Spring Break Dance Party Mix 2024! Top Dance Club Songs of the Year 2024 Volume I | The Year's Biggest Bangers! [Expanded] In the end, selection came down to resonance. Which songs stuck? Which records translated across clubs, playlists, and repeat plays? Judged by that metric, this list still delivers. Why John Summit Dominated the Year One thing listeners will immediately notice across both volumes is the heavy presence of John Summit. That wasn't favoritism—it was math. Summit continues to generate reliable streaming numbers while actively pushing beyond his comfort zone. Rather than repeating past success, he's collaborating with established vocalists and artists who haven't necessarily crossed into the mainstream. That approach results in original records that feel intentional rather than formulaic. Yes, he could easily deliver another “Shiver.” Instead, he's expanding his range. Jack Benny plays a piano tuner who ends up with a bag of stolen money in “Murder in G-Flat” (originally aired on CBS on April 5, 1951), and Phil Harris and Alice Faye face a lynch mob in “Death on My Hands” (originally aired on CBS on May 10, 1951). A cast of veteran radio actors star in a tale of atomic espionage in “The Case for Dr. Singer” (originally aired on June 28, 1951), and Agnes Moorehead returns as a phony spiritualist who may be too convincing for her own good in “The Murder of Adelaide Winters” (originally aired on CBS on September 10, 1951). Charles Laughton plays a notorious murderer from the history books in “Neal Cream, Doctor of Poison” (originally aired on CBS on September 17, 1951). And we close with a double dose of Richard Widmark.
