IN THIS EPISODE: Body shaming: it's something many of us are no stranger to and for some of us, it starts at a very young age and can have a serious or life-threatening impact on our well-being. For individuals with disabilities – where many of us already have very little control over our bodies – it can be a double punch. Jackie and Mizz Sarah welcome returning guest Nikki Crowe as well as the CNIB's Keya Osborne to discuss how size shaming impacted their respective journeys dealing with breast cancer and vision loss. The panel touches on some of the cultural origins of fat stigma, the differences between that and skinny shaming, and how medical professionals can better connect to people living with eating disorders and body dysmorphia. Please note this episode discusses eating disorders and may be triggering to some individuals. Liked this episode? IN THIS EPISODE: Deciding how to feed your baby – and the process of feeding them – is never easy. Add a disability into the mix and that can bring challenges that able-bodied individuals may never encounter throughout their parenting journey. Jackie and Mizz Sarah speak with Mallory Whitmore AKA @theformulamom about choice when it comes to infant feeding and how the push towards breastfeeding can be harmful for some women and their families. Mallory, who lives with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), also shares why it's important for parents of different abilities to have options when it comes to giving birth, and how hospitals and other medical professionals can better meet the needs of their patients throughout the pregnancy and postpartum months. IN THIS EPISODE: The film and television industry still has plenty of catching up to do when it comes to hiring and showcasing the work of people with disabilities. In fact, disabled actors, producers, editors and writers are among the least represented of all minority groups when it comes to screentime. What's more, we still see able-bodied actors playing the roles of disabled characters way too often. Emily Schooley, a Toronto-based actor, filmmaker and all-around badass joins Jackie and Sam to discuss the current problems within the industry, what continues to hold people like us back and who's actually getting it right. IN THIS EPISODE: Growing up with both visible and invisible disabilities, Jackie and Mizz Sarah didn't exactly have the easiest time when trying to fit in amongst their peers. Although their experiences were different, they were both consistently bullied both inside and out of the classroom and even online, at a time when they were either ignored or told to “suck it up.” Jackie and Sarah look back on their school years and discuss how times are changing and how they've made peace with their past. They also provide advice to children, teens and adults who are being bullied today, both at school and in the workplace. If you're a victim of bullying, please know you are never alone and there are many ways you can get help. IN THIS EPISODE: Is addiction an invisible disability? Ex-actress, sober wife, senior dog-mom and writer Henriette Ivanans answers that question while recounting her journey to sobriety following two kidney transplants. Ivanans, the author of “In Pillness and In Health,” was diagnosed with Glomerulonephritis (chronic inflammation of the kidneys) as a teenager while dealing with the death of her alcoholic father. IN THIS FINAL EPISODE OF SEASON ONE: Nikki Crowe received a diagnosis of triple negative stage three breast cancer in May 2018, only seven months after her second child was born. At the same time, she was dealing with a serious heart defect that impacted how her cancer would be treated. After several rounds of aggressive chemo, a mastectomy and months of chemo pills, Nikki is now doing well and regaining her strength day by day, but she still faces two major surgeries that have been delayed due to COVID. Nikki talks about coping while raising two young boys, enduring body shaming and other harsh commentary from medical professionals, and dealing with toxic positivity from able-bodied people who just didn't get it. IN THIS EPISODE: In part two of our discussion about having kids with special guest Shaini Saravanamuthu, we examine what it's like to be pregnant when you have an invisible or visible physical disability and how difficult it is to find information online about anything beyond mainstream pregnancy culture and experiences. And why is it that some women who can't or decide not to carry due to an invisible disability are diagnosed with infertility? But there are women who DO have both: we hear about Shaini's battle with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and how she managed to proactively take charge of her fertility well in advance of having a family. Finally, we explore the challenges of infant and child care and how simple tasks like bathing or cutting your child's nails can be extremely difficult if you live with sight loss, epilepsy or other health issues. There's still plenty of stigma, but we are just as worthy of parenthood as anyone else – and we won't stop talking about it! But what's the deal with the terms ‘high-functioning' and ‘low functioning' anyway? Sandra and Mackenzie describe their lives starting with their childhoods, when they could sense they were somewhat different from their peers and what it's like to be diagnosed in your teens vs. in your 30s. IN THIS EPISODE: While it's difficult to navigate life while using a wheelchair, walker or cane, people with invisible disabilities can face the same struggles. Except for us, others may look at us funny if we park in an accessible spot, take the last remaining seat in the subway car or cram into the elevator rather than taking the stairs or an escalator. Jackie, Cynthia, Sam and Stacie welcome special guest Shaini - who lives with a form of blindness called retinitis pigmentosa - to discuss the weird looks and comments they've gotten throughout the years when they've required some extra mobility assistance. But it's a problem facing fully able-bodied people too, including new mothers who are often forced to carry strollers up flights of stairs! It's something Jackie, Cynthia, Sam and Stacie aren't exactly unfamiliar with, but the more we are told we can't do something, the more determined we are to smash that glass ceiling. IN THIS EPISODE: Is romance any different when you have an invisible disability? It can be, but when it comes right down to it, the crappy dates, weird break ups and random LinkedIn invitations years later (why? Just WHY?) are pretty much the same. The good news? Jackie, Cynthia, Stacie and Sam have all since met the person of their dreams and they couldn't be happier! TRIGGER WARNING: This episode discusses sexual assault from 33:00 through 39:00.
