From Memento and The Dark Knight trilogy to Inception, Interstellar, and Oppenheimer, Nolan has built a reputation for creating emotionally powerful, intellectually challenging films that captivate audiences worldwide. Before diving into his writing philosophy, we also discuss Nolan's upcoming epic The Odyssey, the first major studio feature filmed entirely with IMAX cameras, and what makes the project so ambitious. In this episode, you'll learn:Why embracing your limitations can make you a more creative storyteller. How creating your own storytelling rules is more powerful than simply breaking existing ones. Why point of view is one of the most important decisions a writer can make.Christopher Nolan's "inside-out" approach to writing believable characters. Why stepping away from a script can often be the key to solving story problems. How high-concept ideas only work when they're grounded in universal human emotions. We also discuss:Christopher Nolan's remarkable filmmaking career. His long collaboration with his brother Jonathan Nolan and producer Emma Thomas. The groundbreaking production of The Odyssey and its all-IMAX format. The film's star-studded cast, including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong'o, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, and Mia Goth. How Nolan spent years developing Inception before discovering its emotional core.Whether you're writing your first screenplay, revising a novel, or simply looking for creative inspiration, these five lessons from Christopher Nolan offer timeless advice on crafting stories that are both intellectually engaging and emotionally resonant.

John Reardon sits down with Cameron Barr, founder and CEO of Craft + Tailored, to discuss their favorite, and not-so-favorite, watch placements in film and TV since 1964, when James Bond first notably looked at his Rolex Submariner in Goldfinger. The conversation works through some of the most memorable watch moments on screen, from the Patek Philippe pocket watch in The Thomas Crown Affair, to Steve McQueen's Heuer Monaco in Le Mans, to the trench watch scene in Pulp Fiction. They also revisit the fake Patek Philippe that took center stage in Drive, and the fake Patek Philippe watches used in Succession and Friends and Neighbors that were so obviously props they pulled viewers right out of the story.John and Cameron also highlight the moments Patek got the screen treatment it deserved, from the ref. 5037J that James Gandolfini's presented in The Sopranos, to the ref. 5270 at Wempe New York in Billions. They share their experiences working with prop masters and explain why the small details matter so much for believability.Cameron then takes us behind the scenes of Good Fortune, last year's comedy with Keanu Reeves, Aziz Ansari, and Seth Rogen, where he was cast to play himself. He explains how the role came about, how the watches in the film were carefully chosen to suit each character, and the story behind "Pretty Baby", the yellow gold Daytona that became a character of its own.

Interview With The Vampire - Film and TV Adaptations

Welcome to Academia Unlocked, our literary deep-dive series on Book Talk for BookTok! In this episode, we kick off our three-part series discussing Interview With The Vampire by Anne Rice With over 13 years of combined academic training in literature and creative writing, we walk listeners through the foundational tools of reading beyond the surface. The book community talks about the "decline of literacy" constantly, but almost no one stops to define what literary literacy actually is or how to build it. This series exists to change that. One of the most common ways readers come to Interview with the Vampire is as a horror story. A man becomes a monster and spends eternity regretting it. But Anne Rice was doing something far more precise on the page: writing a confession that doubles as an elegy, for grief that couldn't be named, for love that couldn't be spoken, for a community already disappearing before the world had a word for what was taking it. This series is about making space for both of those readings at once. Whether you fell in love with Lestat on your screen, couldn't put the novel down at 2am, or only know Louis de Pointe du Lac as Brad Pitt looking beautiful and tragic, this series will give you the critical lens to engage with Anne Rice's world with more depth, more confidence, and a lot more to say. The Film and TV industry prepares for the biggest march yet, which begins today

John Maytham is joined by Jack Devnarain, Chairperson of the South African Guild of Actors, who says the scale of this march reflects the depth of the crisis. For the first time, the entire value chain — from actors and writers to producers, crew, editors and post-production professionals — will march together in what organisers describe as an unprecedented show of unity. At the heart of the protest is mounting frustration with the DTIC Film and TV Incentive, which industry bodies say has been paralysed by mismanagement, leaving hundreds of millions of rand in foreign direct investment bottlenecked. Afternoon Drive with John Maytham is the late afternoon show on CapeTalk. Presenter John Maytham is an actor and author-turned-talk radio veteran and seasoned journalist. His show serves a round-up of local and international news coupled with the latest in business, sport, traffic and weather. The host’s eclectic interests mean the program often surprises the audience with intriguing book reviews and inspiring interviews profiling artists. A daily highlight is Rapid Fire, just after 5:30pm. CapeTalk fans call in, to stump the presenter with their general knowledge questions. Another firm favourite is the humorous Thursday crossing with award-winning journalist Rebecca Davis, called “Plan B”. As Hollywood faces an unprecedented crisis, Texas eyes an opportunity. Thanks to new tax incentives, the state is attracting producers and studios, with the ambition of promoting content aligned with family and Christian values. While the official goal is to create jobs in the industry, some lawmakers openly want to build a counterweight to Hollywood, which they see as ideologically hostile. FRANCE 24's Valérie Defert and Pierrick Leurent report from Fort Worth, with Wassim Cornet.

Send us a textThe fact that the heavy drama The Bear has won Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series speaks volumes about how the industry values drama in comparison to comedy. Indeed, the last time a real comedy film won the Best Picture Oscar was 1977, nearly a half-century ago. Why do critics think dark material is so much better than light? Joe and Mark explore the long history of this cultural bias, why it's important to think about who's making such determinations, and whether great comedy will ever receive the recognition it deserves. Bongani Bingwa speaks to actor Bohang Moeko about Netflix’s latest instalment of How To Ruin Love: The Lobola, which dives headfirst into the chaos of modern romance, cultural expectations, and family negotiations. Set against the often messy and emotional process of lobola, the series explores what happens when tradition, love, money, and outspoken relatives collide, with Moeko starring as Kagiso, a man who seemingly can’t catch a break. The conversation also touches on Moeko’s role in Love & Wine, a romantic comedy filled with charm, privilege, and questionable choices, raising the question of why he so often portrays characters who lie, scheme, and emotionally improvise their way through love. 702 Breakfast with Bongani Bingwa is broadcast on 702, a Johannesburg based talk radio station. Richard Scheib's A Viewing Guide to the Pandemic (Headpress, 2025) is a film book like no other. It opens with the author's first-hand account of the Covid-19 pandemic and life in lockdown. His sense of dread, and anxiety about his state of health, were experiences shared with millions of others across the world. For author Richard Scheib, already committed to writing a book about plagues and pandemics in popular culture, Covid-19 felt like a perverse twist of fate. Media depictions of deadly contagions had, to this point, been speculative and often off the mark; his book takes an in-depth look at what filmmakers imagined would happen and contrasts it with the reality. International in scope, A Viewing Guide to the Pandemic examines films in a wide variety of genres, from the silent era to the present day. Black Death, Ebola, Mad Cow Disease, Bird Flu -- it explores fictionalized accounts of plague and pestilence such as box-office hit Outbreak (1995), as well as documentary treatments of real-life incidents. Whether the threats depicted have a basis in reality -- the biowarfare of the Cold War era, for instance -- or are, like zombies and vampires, more fantastical, Scheib demonstrates how the fear of contagion has provided a wealth of inspiration for the big and small screen. In addition to his work on the pandemic, Scheib runs Moria Reviews where he posts reviews for horror, science fiction, and fantasy films.  Learn more about your ad choices.
