How did they conduct business 4000 years ago? They made covenants. Here's how the covenant ritual worked: they cut animals in half, made an aisle, stated the terms of the deal, and both parties would walk through the dead animals saying, "Maybe I become like these animals if I fail to keep my end of the deal." So then comes Genesis 15. God promises Abram descendants and a home. Abram asks how does he know that's gonna happen, God has him get some animals, and Abram does. He cuts them up - sets up the covenant ritual. Then a smoking pot and a blazing torch appears and goes down the aisle alone. That's not how covenants work. Abram should have walked through, too. Here's the point: God is committing to keeping both ends of the deal. God will be faithful even if Abram makes a mess of things. God isn't angry or petulant. God isn't demanding anything from Abram - God is only asking Abram to trust - to be in a relationship with a God who has been revealed as love, grace, and generosity. We, as the people of God, have the opportunity to reflect the character of God back to the world. We don't exist to tell people what they have to believe in order to make it to heaven. That's missing the point. We don't exist to police the behavior of people in here or out there. That's missing the point. We exist to be in a relationship with God and to reflect the character of God back to the world. To be a place of grace. A place of generosity. A place of love. Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter).  John 1:40-42 When Andrew brought his brother Simon to Jesus, Scripture says that Jesus looked at Simon before He spoke to him.  He didn't just look at Simon.  Jesus looked inside Simon.  He saw him.  Just as God saw Hagar in the desert, as she said to the Lord “You are the God who sees me,” (Genesis 16:13), Jesus saw Simon where he was and where he was not yet. He saw what Simon could not yet see in himself. Jesus saw the greatness inside of him. In several places in the Bible we see God renaming people. Abram God named Abraham, Jacob God named Israel, Saul, God named Paul to name a few.  When God renamed someone in the Bible it was because He wanted to give them a new identity or a new mission.  Or they had an encounter with God and God wanted the individual to be branded by that experience or encounter.  God no longer wanted them to identify with their old identity or mission or experience. If you look at the personality of Simon throughout the Gospels you can learn some things about him.  He was a very emotional, type A personality.  One moment he's excited and ready to conquer the world, full of ambition, and the next day he's down in the dumps.  He was incredibly subjective, he lacked objectivity, he's irrational at times, he was an exaggerator, and not the most dependable guy overall.  Jesus looks beyond that and sees greatness and potential in Simon.  And so, Jesus gives Simon a new name, Peter, which literally means big rock or big boulder.  In the first century big strong rocks were used as the foundation for building projects.  Large rocks were used because you could depend on them to hold up the entire rest of the building.  Jesus is calling this reality out of Simon.  Jesus tells him, you are a big rock, you are dependable, you are stable.  “And I say to you, you are Peter and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.” (Matt 16:18).  Jesus wasn't looking at the man that stood in front of him.  He was looking beyond that to see the greatness and the potential inside of Simon. Jesus makes a fierce commitment to Peter.  Jesus gives Simon a new identity as Peter, the large rock. From this new identity and new name, Jesus mentors Peter and the other disciples and Peter becomes the first leader of the church after Jesus ascends to heaven.  He writes portions of the Bible, and he follows after Jesus to the point of martyrdom.  A far cry from the inconsistent and undependable disciple that we read about throughout the Gospels. Jesus is fiercely committed to you too.  He has confidence in you.  Jesus believes in you.  Jesus sees greatness in you.  He loves you in spite of your inconsistencies and failures.  Jesus doesn't look at your exterior.  At the selfishness, inconsistencies, depravity.  He looks beyond exterior masks and facades because he knows what you can become.  Jesus knows what gifts and talents and passions He has placed within you, and he loves you with a fierce love.  Fierce enough to stay by your side, no matter where the tides may turn to teach and to guide you towards your true identity in Him.

Today's message is a stand alone message by our Lead Pastor VP Palmer and it's called Destiny. There's a very famous story in the Bible about a man named Abram. At the age of 75 God called him to a new place, and revealed a destiny He had for Abram's life. And just like Abram God has a specific destiny for each and every one of us.

Have you ever taken a leap-of-faith? Moving to another city, or country to pursue your calling? Abram's response to God's call carries an element of faith that few of us have even in people we know. We often speak of the promises of God as a motivation for Abram's actions, but the story seems to say that there is much more to the Abram-God relationship. Perhaps, there's something there for us to learn from.

What have been the biggest moves in your life? What have been the effects of your leaving homes, jobs, and relationships? God's plan to redeem the world through Abram begins with a call from him to move from his homeland. God calls Abram to leave not only the bad parts of his past but the good parts as well: his country, his people, his family. Moving forward Abram is given a vague but powerful picture of what his life will be with God. This is enough for Abraham to trust and follow. Is this enough for you? Luke 22:19–20 (ESV) And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. DO THIS in remembrance of me.” And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. My first communions were like going to a viewing. Even after I became a Christian and better understood the symbolism, they were similar but now with mournful criers and the fear of dying due to unworthiness.DO THIS: push reset to refresh! Do this! Like an iPhone that starts working wacky after a lot of use and it refreshes after we reset, communion can accomplish the same things.Jesus shared communion with the disciples in the middle of the craziest week of the disciples ministry lives. Miracles, amazing teaching, healings, a parade with crowds chanting Hosanna, death threats, Jesus flipping over tables in the temple, talk destroying and rebuilding it back in three days. Wins and losses. Fans and enemies. It was a crazy week! He pulled everyone in close to himself and hit RESET to come back to the main thing!Lamentations 3:22–23 (ESV) The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. new - chadash – to renewWe can get into a spiritual funk as a result of wins or losses, busyness or boredom but its so valuable to hit reset, like shaking an Etch-a-Sketch,Psalm 103:5 (ESV) who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. DO THIS: bring Jesus back into focus!Communion is to create a moment of remembrance. Everything in this LIFE will fight for your attention – Jesus was saying “BRING ME BACK INTO FOCUS!”Matthew 17:7–8 (ESV) But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.” And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. This is something you will have to do again and again and again, not because there’s something wrong with you, but because you’re still here.Hebrews 12:1–2 (NIV) Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Ignoring the distractions and getting Him back into focus will actually help those other things that are fighting for your attention to work out better!Matthew 6:31–33 (ESV) Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Peter went back to fishing. Jesus reappeared. Peter got back to being a disciple. Its important to FOCUS on more than just crucifixion!!! It’s about focusing on everything about Him.DO THIS: cash in on His covenant!Sometimes things on earth don’t align with Heaven. Communion is an opportunity to point review “the new covenant in my blood” to remind yourself of the promises with the expectation that they will align.Covenant: a binding agreement between two partiesGenesis 15:8 (ESV) But he said, “O Lord God, how am I to know that I shall possess it?” covenants were often sealed by severing of a costly prized animal in perfect condition. Genesis 15:9–10 (ESV) He said to him, “Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” And he brought him all these, cut them in half, and laid each half over against the other. The Hebrew verb meaning to seal a covenant translates literally as “to cut.”a sobering moment between parties as one party would have to kill something with His hands in the presence of the other to seal the agreement.the implication was that the party who breaks the covenant will suffer a similar fate. Genesis 15:17–18 (ESV) When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram…God has made more than just promises, He’s made a covenant. Communion is the sales receipt, proof that not only the promises were made, but paid for.Sometimes agreements lose traction, one party fails to keep up their end. Guaranteed, He’s not given up on His. It’s always a failure on our end to cash in!DO THIS:push reset to refresh.bring Jesus back into focus.cash in on His covenant.

Abraham - Faith, Fear, and Worship Genesis 12:1-3 God makes a covenant with Abram - God will change his name to Abraham later God promises him a nation, a great name, blessing and to bless all the nations through him. The stipulation: Abram must leave his country, kindred and his father's house and go to the land. Genesis‬ ‭12‬:‭4-9‬ 4a. It was no small thing to leave your family in those days. Abram would have left everything familiar: home, family, friends. But he trusted that God had something greater for him, so he left. By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. (‭Hebrews‬ ‭11‬:‭8‬) God regularly calls his people to follow him out of comfort, out of security into a life of faith. He calls us to follow him even though we don't know where he'll lead. God calls you to trust him and follow his leading. Don't let the security and comfort make you miss God's plan for you. 4b. Abram took Lot with him - maybe not perfectly obedient, but seems to be out of generosity. Lot was Abram's nephew. Lot's father, Abram's brother, Haran died. 5. ch 11 mentions that Sarai is barren, so they have no children. 6. They passed through Schechem, to the oak of Moreh. Schechem is a city in Canaan near two mountains, Mt Gerizim and Mt Ebal. It is also near the oak of Moreh - literally, "oracle, soothsayer, or teacher." 7. God had promised this land to Abram, 8. God appears, "To your offspring I will give this land." Two problems 1) the Canaanites already lived there and 2) Abram and Sarai had no children. What was Abram's response? Anger towards God? Give up and go home? He built an altar to God there. Did Abram receive God's promise? Abram believed God's promise and worshipped him as though the promise was as good as fulfilled. He just set foot in Canaan and worships God at his word. We do not know the Lord's timing. We do not know his plan. Sometimes all we know is that the Lord is good and faithful to his promises. When Abram dies in ch 23, all he will own of the promised land is a cave for family burials. But he receives the promises of God by faith. Hebrews‬ ‭11‬:‭13-16‬ These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city. They were strangers and exiles on earth. The patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob) were nomadic because they did not receive the promised land. Their descendants wouldn't receive the land for several more generations. But the passage says more than that. They lived by faith in God. They aspired to more than land and property. They looked to a home beyond this existence, a better existence. They desired a home with the their God. God is not ashamed to be their God 8. he built an altar to the Lord and called upon the name of the Lord In the midst of the Canaanites, pagan idol worshippers, he "called", "proclaimed" or Martin Luther translated it, "preached" the name of YHWH. Genesis‬ ‭12‬:‭10-20‬ - In fear for his own life, Abram lies about Sarai, leads to her being taken into Pharaoh's harem. But God protected her, came to her rescue. Abram demonstrated faith by trusting God and leaving everything. Is God leading you to greater obedience, service? Don't stay in comfort zone Even though the land wasn't his, Abram believed God's promise and worshipped. Waiting for God? What to do in times of waiting? Worship God in faith.
