What if Thomas More had just signed the Oath of Supremacy? He could have. Plenty of people did. Cranmer signed it. Cromwell signed it. So why didn't More, and what would have changed if he had? In this week's What If Thought Experiment, we're looking at one of the Tudor period's most interesting counterfactuals. Henry VIII didn't need More's signature legally, he wanted it because More was the gold standard of European humanist credibility. Getting More to sign meant something. And More refused to give him that. We talk about what a living More might have meant for the trajectory of the English Reformation, whether Mary I's reign might have looked different without the brutal martyrdoms of the 1530s setting the tone, and the woman at the center of it all: Margaret Roper, who bribed a guard, lied to the King's Council, and was buried holding her father's pickled head nine years later. Why do we sometimes attach oaths to our words? Why might we be tempted to add an oath, for example, "I swear on the grave of my mother?" Why would something I say, merit the calling upon the support of the burial plot of someone dear to me? This is such a strange thing: that adding an OATH somehow increases the likelihood of a statement being TRUE. The fact that there are oaths at all tells us one thing: that often, our words aren't true. A federal judge called it bullshit, brought in legal experts who agreed it was bullshit, then settled by creating a $1.7 billion "Anti-Weaponization Fund" controlled by five allies of AG Todd Blanche, with no transparency requirements and the explicit purpose of paying out January 6 defendants. Glennis just paid her taxes. Trump's approval is now 37%, the lowest of his political career. The Democratic generic ballot is at +11, larger than the 2018 wave. On Friday, Adhikari was elected leader of the BJP Legislature Party, making him the next Chief Minister of West Bengal. He will be sworn in on Saturday in Kolkata, ending 15 years of Trinamool Congress rule in the state. Mamata Banerjee's fiercest political rival has now taken over the state's top post. Adhikari emerged as the defining figure of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, leading the BJP to 207 victories in the 293-seat Assembly. The Trinamool Congress managed only 80 seats.
