Abstract: This paper explores the oath sworn by Akish and his followers in Ether 8:13–15 as a possible remnant of ancient Sumerian legal and religious tradition. It draws on comparative evidence from early Mesopotamian oath formulae, including the Vulture Stele of Lagash and other Sumerian contractual texts. The study proposes that the structure of the oath sworn “by the God of heaven, and also by the heavens, and also by the earth” reflects a triadic invocation pattern consistent with Sumerian invocations of An, Enlil, and Ki. Modern commentators have noted Moroni's interpretive Christianization of the Jaredite record. This analysis suggests that, beneath that redaction, the oath preserves linguistic and theological elements traceable to a Mesopotamian origin. The comparison illuminates both the antiquity of Jaredite culture and the deep continuity between Near Eastern oath traditions and Book of Mormon narrative patterns visible in the first recorded formation of a secret combination. Statewide math and English scores have reached five-year highs, according to Ohio's public and charter school report cards for the 2025-26 school year. Akron received three stars, Cleveland received two-and-a-half and Youngstown improved to three stars, meeting state standards for the first time in 25 years. Statewide, chronic absenteeism also declined, but about 38% of students were not proficient in English language arts and 44% were not proficient in math. Federal immigration officials canceled 13 naturalization ceremonies in the Cleveland area this year, with nearly all scheduled between May and October. Nationwide, citizenship approvals have dropped while the backlog of naturalization applications has grown, with average processing times approaching a year. In Cleveland, attorneys say the longer waits are leaving people stuck in the process for months longer before they can take the Oath of Allegiance. Reps. Tristan Rader (D-Lakewood) and David Thomas (R-Jefferson) are working on a bipartisan bill that would require utility companies to reimburse customers for food and medicine lost during prolonged power outages. The proposal would require utilities to offer an automatic $50 daily credit when power outages go on for more than 16 hours in normal conditions and more than 36 hours during gray-sky conditions. The credit would be offered after 72 hours in catastrophic conditions, defined as severe weather causing outages that hit over 10% of a utility's customers. The bill is still being drafted, and other lawmakers could still sign on to it. Cleveland's St. Patrick's Day Parade is getting a new route in 2027, moving from Superior Avenue back to Euclid Avenue after nearly 20 years. The parade will begin at Playhouse Square and travel through downtown, including Gateway and Public Square. The change comes as the city plans to add bike lanes to Superior Avenue, which had been the parade's route since construction of the RTA HealthLine forced the move in 2008. Trump speaks both nights. A roundtable with him runs $250,000 per person and a photo is another $88,600. JD Vance's roundtable is $75,000 with a $35,000 photo. Brian explains why holding it in Texas is the entire point, and why Republicans in competitive districts are quietly staying home.Then Rockbridge. AXIOS reported this week that the secretive donor network Vance co-founded in 2019 threw the pre-convention party in Dallas, drawing HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., HUD Secretary Scott Turner, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Senator Eric Schmitt and Dallas donor Ray Washburne. Brian reads it as a preview of the 2028 campaign Vance is already building.On the legal side, two courts split on Missouri's congressional map within an hour of each other. Before he ever met Mica, pastor John-Paul Miller's first wife stated in a sworn affidavit that he had confessed a prostitution addiction to his own congregation. That history sets up everything that follows. JP's father, Reginald, built a church empire in the South Carolina Lowcountry that later collapsed under federal felony convictions for forced labor, and two civil lawsuits now allege both father and son used their positions to gain access to minors through their churches and schools. Mica moved to Myrtle Beach at 15 to work at Solid Rock Church, and told police JP had controlled her since she was a child. A federal indictment filed in December 2025 alleges seventeen months of cyberstalking — tracking devices, more than fifty contacts in a single day, interference with her finances and medical care. She filed at least eight police reports. JP still held healthcare power of attorney over her. On April 25, 2024, Mica served him with divorce papers. Forty-eight hours later, she was found dead at a North Carolina state park, ruled a suicide, after telling a friend JP threatened to put a bullet in her head and stage it as her own doing. He was verified in Charleston and has not been charged. The next morning he preached a full sermon before addressing her death, later claiming he tried to raise her from the dead. Four days after that, he was seen at a bar with Suzie Skinner, whom he married thirteen months later. In this trip to the balmy landscape, we have to plenty to see and hear, as we listen to the confidante say these words to the man, when he arrives for his tryst by day with the lady: “From the seas with soaring waves, harsh-eyed, strong fish, gathered by the pull of sturdy nets, are brought ashore by fishermen, and handed over to their precious sisters, wearing beautiful leaves around their waists. They take this catch to the streets, filled with festivities, and sell by shouting out the price in your picturesque hamlet, filled with groves, O lord of the huge seashore! You have failed by not showering your grace to remove the rumours, spreading in town, and end the suffering of my friend, with flower-like, kohl-streaked eyes. The short-legged seabird which had been fishing in the deep backwaters, dries its exquisite wings upon sand dunes, filled with beach morning glory vines, upon which the laurel wood tree with curving trunks shower their pollen, beautifying those huge shores, where splitting the fine wet sand, your tall, decorated chariot had arrived, ruining sand dolls carved on the shore. Arriving so, when you relished the beauty of her fresh arms, didn't you take an oath, with the sea as your witness? Are you going to fail in keeping your word too?” Time for a dip in the pristine seas of the past! The confidante first takes us right to the middle of the seas, where we see ancient fishermen casting their nets and pulling in a rich catch of fish. Then, we travel back to the shore and see how their work done, the men hand over the catch to their sisters, who take up the task of selling this catch by finding the right spot in the streets, where festivities are unfolding. Isn’t that a good division of labour? I wonder what the price of that catch would be? Was it barter or money? Would those fine maiden let their customers bargain and negotiate? Interesting to ponder on these questions about the past. Returning, we learn the confidante has mentioned this scene only to describe the man’s hamlet, where such things unfold. Then, she turns to the man and accuses him of not fulfilling his role of showering grace upon the lady because slander was spreading in town and he seemed to be doing nothing to allay the lady’s suffering on account of that. Then the confidante turns to describe their huge shores, where seabirds rove above the backwaters, fishing, and then come to dry their wings on the sand dunes, which are coated with the fragrant pollen of the laurel wood tree. Describing this exquisite place, the confidante recollects how the man had come through those very shores, splitting the sands with the wheels of his tall chariot and ruining the sand dolls, those girls had carved with much love on the shore. The confidante turns to talk about how at that time, the man had taken an oath before relishing the lady’s beauty, with the sea as his witness, probably saying that he shall never let the lady suffer again. The confidante concludes by asking the man if he was going to fail in fulfilling that oath too! In essence, it’s a strong warning invoking promises made, bidding the man to ‘Marry the lady’, instead of seeking the temporary pleasure of trysting. It must have been a time when a man breaking his word was huge deal and it’s that moral currency the confidante employs here. Beyond these usual relationship dynamics, it was indeed a refreshing trip to the seas, taking in the commotion of humans and the calm of flora and fauna that resonate on those ancient shores!
