Greetings FAYE-treon Fam!On Ep. 61 of "Talking At The Diner" I met up with my friends Gina LC and Scott Radway of one of my very favorite Philly indie bands: Lo-Priestess! Gina and Scott are what you'd call a musical super-couple.. both are amazingly talented artists who work together in Lo-Priestess with Gina on lead vocals and Scott on keys, but they also do amazing things separately from each other. Gina fronts and plays guitar in another great long-running Philly band - the heavier, grungier Dear Forbidden, and Scott is also a solo artist, a drummer, and a very sought-after producer, who notably worked with our mutual friend Erin Fox on her latest album "Uprooting."Back in May, Lo-Priestess recently release an absolute banger of a single called "The Faker," and Scott and Gina continue to forge a life together as a married couple, working day jobs, raising their daughter, becoming homeowners, and still following their artistic passions. Of course, this takes an incredible amount of dedication, sacrifice, communication, and planning. Very often I'll see one of them out at an event, knowing that the other is keeping things running smoothly at home. Team work makes the dream work, as the old saying goes.I met up with this very dynamic duo at the Club House Diner in Bensalem, way up in the far reaches of Northeast Philadelphia. This restaurant holds significance in our conversation because it is the site of their first "date" close to a decade and a half ago. The Morrigan has come into my life this last year. Sightings of giant ravens, power that I mine in my anger and hurt, potent enough to scorch a path to healing. She is known to be difficult to work with, and I shouldn't say 'she' it is they. The Morrigan is a title. As I have been studying about this Irish goddess, I've learned The Morrigan is many in one, and probably one of the most misunderstood deities in history. I am currently reading a book on The Morrigan titled, Priestess of the Morrigan by Stephanie Woodfield. I know I am fated to read this book because yesterday two things happened that showed up in the pages I would read in bed. First, I dreamt of running up and down a spiral staircase for exercise, stopping only to refresh my water bottle with ice chips. And on page 75 Woodfield writes about working with The Morrigan, channeling them in a trance saying, "It is like walking down a long spiraling staircase, each step taking you down deeper and deeper. One cannot skip from the first step to the bottom landing. Later in the day as I was running an errand, I was stopped at a traffic light. Above were hundreds of black birds. They were diving and swooping and circling as one mind, it seemed. Well, page 52 shares the dream one of her cohorts recorded, telling Stephanie, "Yes, you were singing. I told you, it's all sorts of strangeness. Macha was singing too. I wrote it down. You were singing about blackbirds– "They will help you if you let them A flock of blackbirds flyingA cloak of feathers on youBringing strength when times are trying"When I was buying this book in a Denver witch store, the cashier told me to be careful, that working with The Morrigan is no joke. That's the kind of response they illicit. Early pages of the book I'd purchased, Priestess of the Morrigan, resonated. Here's the passage;"There seems to be a general feeling that the Morrigan is angry all the time, always in battle fury mode. Always ready for blood. That this imagery must be the totality of her personality. I have been a priestess of the Morrigan for over 20 years now, and it still surprises me how often I come across these ideas, how superficially we view the gods. Still, after all this time, all we see is war in her, and even then, all we see is the romanticized ideal of war. Not the truth of it. We talk about: Her amazing first 10 years playing in the woods and making potions in nature outside of Boston. How life shifted at the age of 10 when Sarah began to attend Weight Watchers and found herself in a restriction-binge eating cycle for 13 years. The Dove chocolate moment when Sarah realized she was not well around her relationship to food, and her decision to accept she would be overweight but would have fun anyway – and how this began to break the cycle and led to an emotional eating company she founded and ran until 2017. When Sarah first discovered feminine ceremony, and how this completely shifted her path toward studying and becoming a Priestess. How the sacred feminine has been deliberately erased in our history and the impact this has had on women. Her husband's response to her announcement that she was “magical” and that she wanted a non-traditional path and non-patriarchal relationship.
