Stan Lee, the comic book writer, editor, publisher, and man behind so much of Marvel Comics died on November 12, 2018 at the age of 95. I was vacationing on the Hawaiian island of Kauai with my mother when we heard the news. We were both stunned as we felt the weight of his passing. My mother and I are huge fans of superheroes, comic books, and Science Fiction. Over the past eleven years we have deeply enjoyed what the Marvel Cinematic Universe has offered to us in the form of all the great superhero movies to hit the big screen. Our family love and appreciation goes back further in time and deeper in our lives. My mother and father raised my two brothers and me on Science Fiction and superheroes. My earliest memories with my parents are going to see Star Wars on the big screen while watching Star Trek at home. At that time there were also several Made-For-TV superhero series including Spider-Man and our family favorite, The Hulk. I am a fan of both DC and Marvel because so much of my life has been influenced by the culture of superheroes. I am not sure why my two immigrant parents loved superheroes and Science Fiction so much, but I am sure glad they did. It is a large part of who I am today. And in saying that, Stan Lee and his comic creations have made a huge difference in my life. This podcast is about how Stan and his crew make a difference in my life. Thanks for listening! I invite you to share this podcast, offer a comment, or leave some feedback. Show Notes: A personal tribute to San Lee and comic book superheroes in general. If you haven't, you're in for a real treat today, because my guest knows a thing or two about all of the awesome experiences that await you when you embark on the journey of improving your confidence. I met Kayla-Leah through my good friend AlejAndro Anastasio at the TEDx Boise 2017 event. Both AlejAndro and Kayla-Leah presented talks at that event. Kayla-Leah's talk, titled "The Cost of Menstrual Shame" was a real eye-opener for me about the struggle women go through in developing countries and even right here at home when it comes to managing their menstrual cycle. Here's her TEDx talk: Since meeting Kayla-Leah and being introduced to her work I've read her book, Purple Crayon Confidence, and followed her work. In this interview we cover a lot of ground, including her book, her TEDx talk, her work with Days for Girls. We also discuss her upcoming Purple Crayon Confidence 18 Day Challenge and what you can expect from this going through this course. You can visit Kayla-Leah's website to stay up to date on everything she's doing, including her future projects. You can also sign up for The Purple Crayon Confidence 18 Day Challenge there. The challenge starts on June 18th. Quote of the Week: You get to set the tone around menstruation. I have four boys, Mark. Four boys. And I work in Days for Girls. My house is a maxi-pad manufacturing plant. My license plate says "PERIOD" on it...I got to set the tone in my own home and I realized before I was setting a tone of shame and silence. So this has been my own personal journey too, to realize that my hiding isn't doing them any favors." ~ Kayla-Leah Rich, talking about the impact we can all make by deciding how we want to approach tough subjects like menstruation Resources Mentioned: Purple Crayon Confidence: A Strategic Workbook to Build and Maintain Self-Assurance - By Kayla-Leah Rich Days for Girls - The organization Kayla is involved with that provides supplies and education to women around the globe so they can manage their menstrual cycle while attending school or work activities. Years ago I witnessed a simple exercise that made a profound impact on my life. I want to share it here because I think it will give you an idea of what we're talking about when we say "turning thoughts to things". This experience was something that took place during an Aikido Seminar at 3 Shapes Aikido. AlejAndro Anastasio was our Sensei, and owner of the dojo. He's been on the show before, here and here. If you haven't had a chance to check out his podcast, One Hand Speaks, I highly recommend it. Not only is he a professional public speaker, but he has lived (and continues to live) an extraordinary life. He shares his experiences on his podcast. As a side note, in addition to his deep dedication to Aikido, and teaching us solid technique, he would tell us stories that supported what we were learning. It was an exceptional experience, and one I will always remember. Getting back to my story... At this seminar, Robert Nadeau Shihan demonstrated the powerful concept of embodying an idea. It's something we can all do to rapidly accelerate the realization of our goals and dreams in life. Because, at the end of the day, everything we want in life is an idea, or a concept. Embodying the idea of what we want will cause us to act in ways that bring it to us. This is one of the great practices we human beings can engage in. Here's a video showing Robert Nadeau talking about ideas and presence during a class session. We can learn a lot from him on many levels. Thank you Shihan Nadeau. Quote of the Week: First there's the idea...now it has to shift down to the system. We call it body, or functioning system." ~ Robert Nadeau Shihan Resources Mentioned: None this week Awesome Resources Created Just For You: Just Be It! - Improve your performance and your results in any area of your life quickly and easily! AlejAndro Anastasio knows how to do a pilgrimage. He recently returned from China and Tibet, where he spent five weeks serving others, touring the area, and spending time with shaolin monks. I recently sat down with him and he shared his experience. In addition to discussing the trip, he shared some deep level knowledge about the history of Buddhism and the martial arts. You see, AlejAndro isn't your typical tourist. He's a Dzogchen Vajrayana Buddhist practitioner. He also holds black belts in three martial arts. And, if that weren't enough, he has a deep affinity for Zen (or Chan, as they call it in China). For those of you who are unfamiliar with Bodhicitta, here's a definition: "Bodhicitta is a mind (including thought, action, feeling and speech) totally dedicated to others and to achieving full enlightenment in order to benefit all sentient beings as fully as possible." Source Show Notes The primary purpose of AlejAndro's trip, was to serve as part of a medical mission at the request of one of the members of his sangha. The group traveled to Tibet, and to the community where his teacher, Dzogchen Khenpo Choga Rinpoche, was raised, to administer medical assistance to the people who live there. This is the group's third year travelling to Tibet as part of the One Path USA medical support mission. Near the village is the picturesque Dzogchen monastery. The village is very third world, without indoor running water. Some of the supplies they distributed while they were there included reading glasses and sunglasses, which the villagers need to help them avoid over-exposure to the sun at the high altitude. Despite not having access to a lot of medical care, the people are generally healthy, and very happy and grateful for the mission workers to be there. His primary role on this mission was geku (one who keep's order and acts as security). After serving the medical mission, he traveled to the Shaolin Temple. AlejAndro has a very deep connection with and an affinity for Huike, Bodhidharma's disciple who chopped off his left hand in a demonstration of his dedication to Bodhidharma. Near the Shaolin Temple is the cave Bodhidharma lived in for 9 years. Legend has it that Bodhidharma burned two holes into the wall of that cave from staring at it during meditation. AlejAndro climbed the 1000 steps to visit the cave, "[He] got a powerful vibe out of Bodhidharma's cave.” “Bodhidharma is a genesis of martial arts.” AlejAndro says. He brought the movements of Kung Fu to the area. Bodhidharma is 28th in the lineage to Buddha. “Most people don't realize that Kung Fu is based in Buddhism.” AlejAndro says. The Martial arts and Buddhism go hand in hand. The martial arts are really about self-discipline and self-discovery. “For me it's a true mecca [The Shaolin Temple], not only from a martial art perspective, from a Buddhist perspective.” said Alejandro. I'm going to help people, service people, practice bodhicitta, try to diminish people's suffering and be the condition of their happiness and help them in as many ways as I can." ~ AlejAndro Anastasio,
