Ainda criança, ele sonhava em ser jogador de futebol. Mas o destino o levou por outros caminhos e foi justamente ao enfrentar o bullying escolar, que encontrou no Kung Fu um refúgio e uma escola de disciplina e autoconfiança. Foram oito anos dedicados à arte marcial que ajudaram a moldar seu caráter. Em 2013, mudou-se para o Rio de Janeiro a trabalho e lá passou a ter contato com o que há de melhor na Cidade Maravilhosa: a natureza. O mar, a floresta e as rochas tornaram-se seu playground. Pedalar, remar, mergulhar e escalar entraram para sua rotina e foi justamente a escalada que abriu as portas para sua primeira grande experiência em alta montanha: o cume do Aconcágua, em 2015. Ali nasceu uma nova paixão. A sensação de pequenez diante da natureza e o prazer de conquistar com o próprio esforço o topo de uma montanha o levaram a seguir explorando outras montanhas andinas. Em 2018, deu um passo que mudaria sua vida. Uma nova perspectiva profissional que unia tudo o que sempre quis fazer, trabalhando com o que ama: esporte, viagem, lifestyle e fotografia. O resultado disso foi o que ele passou a compartilhar em seu perfil no Instagram, sua forma de se expressar e de mostrar seu mundo. Levar o corpo ao limite, entrar no estado de fluxo e elevar a consciência a outro nível. Afinal, isso é o que o motiva, o que o guia. Veio a pandemia, e o confinamento repentino trouxe a sensação de prisão. No início, ele até tentou levar na brincadeira — escalando pelos cômodos do apartamento e nadando na varanda —, mas à medida que a quarentena parecia não ter fim, a diversão perdeu o sentido. A falta de movimento abalou sua mente até o ponto em que decidiu tomar uma atitude: nadar no mar. Aquilo foi libertador. Além de extravasar a energia, o contato com a natureza o reconectou com sua essência. Nadando com amigos, descobriu o triathlon e logo se desafiou: completar uma prova de Ironman. Foram oito meses de preparação em um ciclo intenso de treinos, renúncias e aprendizados. Missão concluída com sucesso, decidiu ir além e encarar um Ultraman no final de 2021. Assim iniciou sua incursão nas provas de ultras distâncias. Vieram então uma sequência de feitos impressionantes. Para citar alguns: pedalou de Porto Alegre ao Rio de Janeiro, tornou-se, à época, o nadador mais jovem a concluir o desafio do Leme ao Pontal, participou do Ultraman da Floria e do UB515, conquistou o segundo lugar no Fodaxman, resultado que lhe garantiu a participação no Norseman do ano seguinte. Em 2024 correu a BR 135, a UTMB de Chamonix e o Mundial de Ultraman no Havaí. Este ano, completou a Arrowhead e venceu sua primeira competição, a UAI Ultra dos Anjos de 235 km. Ele acredita que a busca pelo autoconhecimento é a chave para superar qualquer desafio. Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to guest Radames Pera on part two of our conversation about growing up a child actor to actress Lisa Pera. Like episode one of our conversation last week, we dig into some really intense and really dark places that have to be heard to be believed. As the young Grasshopper on the 70s TV show Kung Fu to an eventual, genuine teen heartthrob thanks to his role as John Jr. on Little House on the Prairie, we learn on this episode that all that glitters is not gold. On this episode we get a deep dive into the aforementioned Coogan's Law that was put on the books in 1939 so that child actors were protected by law from parents benefiting financially from their career. Or so we are told. Laws are only good when enforced and Radames lays out the intense, jaw-dropping details of how the law failed him by his very own mother. We also learn of Radames' mother, actress Lisa Pera hoarding disorder in her later years that was so bad, Radames felt the need to document it on YouTube. And while we discuss this in depth, the videos are hard to watch. Moreover, the home in the videos is the one Radamas grew up in. It's a tough watch. This episode has layers upon layers of really difficult emotions that we tackle only through the honesty and genuine candor of our guest. This one is a rough one and one for the ages. Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are bringing you part one of our conversation with former child actor Radames Pera, best known for his roles on shows like Kung-Fu and Little House on the Prairie. We had to split this episode into two episodes because there as so much more than we bargained for when we sat down to record this episode. Somehow in addition to covering Radames' career, we got into spin art, the Coogan Law, punk rock, fitting in at school and so much more. Part of that so much more involved his mother Lisa Pera whose acting career involved TV shows like Get Smart, Perry Mason, Hawaii 5-0 and many, many more. We discuss what it was like being raised in a Hollywood apartment by a young, single mother who was too emotionally mixed up from her own time as one of the many victims of being a Ukrainian – Russian in Nazi Germany during WWII. It's so unreal, it's hard to believe it's not more well known or talked about 70+ years later. And somehow, this is just the beginning of Radames tale because there is an entirely different story in part two of the podcast as well. What starts as a story about seemingly idyllic roles as John Jr. and a young Caine that found Pera on the cover of teen magazines as a heartthrob for years turns very dark, very fast. Send us a textMany times, Fairfax criminal defense lawyer Jon Katz  has quoted this great passage from the Kung Fu television pilot with David Carradine (1972): “Perceive the way of nature and no force of man can harm you. Do not meet a wave head on: avoid it. You do not have to stop force: it is easier to redirect it. Learn more ways to preserve rather than destroy. Avoid rather than check. Check rather than hurt. Hurt rather than maim. Maim rather than kill. For all life is precious nor can any be replaced.” This is an ideal way to master courtroom battle and to handle any conflict. When I learned that Kung Fu's creators Ed Spielman and Howard Friedlander are still alive, I started looking for them to invite them onto my Beat the Prosecution podcast. Hitting deadends in finding their email addresses, I revisited Kung Fu chronicler Herbie J Pilato, who blew me away in accepting my interview invitation within hours. The Kung Fu stand-alone pilot (Kung Fu: The Way of the Tiger, the Sign of the Dragon) blew away the nearly-nine year old me in multiple ways through multiple layers. Here I was learning both the concept and way to pursue a path other than brute force, whether through studying, verbal combat, sports or physical fighting. That is not to say that I was a quick learner, but that the path was now visible and open to me. By now, it all comes together. The wu wei of acting in harmony with the universe's natural flow. The path of zero, with no chasing while fully engaging with the opponent. The cleaning with self identity through Ho'oponopono. Nayland Smith made his first appearance in Detective Comics in Detective Comics #17 (DC). Marvel later acquired the rights to the characters, and in the 1970s developed a kung fu television series around the unknown son of Fu Manchu: Shang-Chi. “Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown,” were, of course, the closing words from Polanski's 1974 movie, Chinatown. But the point of Jeff Chang's new biography of Bruce Lee, Water Mirror Echo, is that by 1973, when Lee died, Asian America was more than just Chinatown. Lee made Asian America, Chang argues, by giving Asian Americans dignity. Chang shows how Lee's journey from segregated Seattle and San Francisco neighborhoods to global stardom paralleled the rise of Asian American political consciousness. His films weren't just action movies but anti-colonial spectacles - kicking down “No Chinese and Dogs” signs, fighting for workers against bosses, defending communities against gentrification. After Bruce Lee, chinatown became more, so much more, than just chinatown.1. Lee was an “anchor baby” who embodied the immigrant struggle Born in San Francisco in 1940 during Chinese Exclusion, Lee lived in segregated neighborhoods and learned firsthand what it meant to be a racialized minority - making him a powerful symbol for those Trump-era immigration debates Chang references.2. His movies were explicitly political, not just action films From labor solidarity in The Big Boss to anti-colonialism in Fist of Fury to fighting gentrification in Way of the Dragon, Lee's films consistently championed underdogs against oppressors.3. Lee's rise paralleled the birth of “Asian American” identity Just as the term “Asian American” emerged in Berkeley in 1968, Lee was transforming from Hollywood sidekick to global hero, giving form to a new political consciousness that refused second-class status.4. Hollywood's racism forced Lee to find stardom in Asia After losing the Kung Fu role to David Carradine in yellowface, Lee had to return to Hong Kong to be seen as a leading man - becoming Asia's biggest star in six months.5. Jeff Chang, in his new biography "Water Mirror Echo," explores how the short of life of Bruce Lee helped make Asian America. Born in San Francisco's Chinatown, Lee was denied the lead role in Warner Bros.'s 1970s TV series "Kung Fu," which was given instead to David Carradine in yellowface. Lee's collision with Hollywood rejection became a catalyst for his rise at a time of emergent Asian American political consciousness. Chang discusses how Lee became a global symbol of Asian American dignity, and how his legend has only grown in the decades since his death.
