How do we access joy when the world feels heavy? How do we lean into joy amidst collective anguish, grief, and global uncertainty? As we enter the holiday of Sukkos, the time of our joy, we are asked to celebrate. But what does it look like to celebrate honestly, without ignoring the ache of our times? In this episode, we explore how Sukkos offers a model of Jewish joy that honors the emotional complexity of life. A joy that is not about denying our pain, but about making a courageous spiritual choice: to recognize the divine presence and be moved by it, to root more deeply into our communal spaces and our responsibility for one another, and to bring our sorrow to the dance floor, trusting in its ultimate healing.Sources:Chapter 33, Tanya by the Alter Rebbe "I Praised Happiness" by Rabbi Shagar "Catharsis" by Rabbi Joseph B. “In the place where penitents stand, even the completely righteous cannot stand.” Berakhot 34B Last week we encountered this Talmudic teaching which privileges the struggle, the growth, the journey, the learning, of the person who realized they were not living their best life, and they embarked upon teshuvah to live a better life. This week we are going to double click on this teaching that prizes struggle and growth in two ways. One, what are the ideas behind it? We will see the perspectives of an arch rationalist (Maimonides), the Hasidic master Rebbi Nachman of Bratslov, and the founder of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, the Alter Rebbe, who authored a work called The Tanya. Each has a different interpretation as to why struggle and growth are prized. Two, what does artwork that celebrates this kind of struggle and growth look like? We will examine works of Yoko Ono, Wish Tree, Frida Kahlo, The Two Fridas, and Yayoi Kusama, Infinity Mirrors. What do each of these works of art say about the journey of the soul that is teshuvah? May Shabbat Shuvah, and the teshuvah we each do in this season, bring us ever closer to the person we hope to become.

In this episode, we are introduced to Reb Schneur Zalman, the Alter Rebbe. We find out about his birth, and the fascinating directives that the Baal Shem Tov gave to his parents about him.
ג' חלקים משיחת אור לכ"ט אלול ה'תשכ"ב, ער"ה ה'תשכ"ג ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=21-09-2025 Synopsis [At the farbrengen, the Rebbe was presented with a shtender produced at the vocational school in Kfar Chabad.] The Alter Rebbe once asked his son, the Mitteler Rebbe, “With what did you daven last Rosh Hashanah?” The Mitteler Rebbe replied that he had meditated on the words, “And every being of stature shall prostrate itself before You” – the bitul of the komah of Adam Kadmon, which refers to the entire Seder Hishtalshelus; since on Rosh Hashanah the creation of the entire Seder Hishtalshelus is renewed, he meditated on how the entire Seder Hishtalshelus is completely nullified, it “shall prostrate itself before You,” which causes Hashem to accept the request of the Jewish people on Rosh Hashanah to “Reign over the entire world.” The Mitteler Rebbe then asked the Alter Rebbe, “With what did you daven?” and he replied, “With the shtender (lectern).” The explanation is as follows: Although the shtender is only an inanimate object, it assists a person in his service of tefillah, connecting the person to Hashem by holding the siddur etc. Similarly, in the spiritual sense, the bitul attained by meditating on the idea that “There is nothing besides Him” even in a shtender is greater than the bitul attained by a person's intellectual meditation on the idea that “every being of stature shall prostrate itself before You.” The lesson is that even after the service of the month of Elul, one has not yet reached the essential point – the kabbolas ol of Rosh Hashanah, which is absolute bitul and setting oneself aside, not in accordance with the intellect and emotions, but like the shtender.3 excerpts from sichah of Thursday night, 29 Elul 5722, Erev Rosh Hashanah 5723 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=21-09-2025 לזכות דבורה לאה בת מושקא שתחי' ליום ההולדת שלה כ"ח אלול - לשנת ברכה והצלחה, ואריכות ימים ושנים טובות*לע"נ הרב משה יצחק בן הרב לוי ע"ה פארסט – שלוחו של הרבי למדינת הולנד – ליום היארצייט שלו כ"ח אלול.

ב' חלקים משיחת יום ב', כ"ה אלול, ליל ג' דסליחות, ה'תשל"ה ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=15-09-2025 Synopsis My father-in-law revealed that the third day of Selichos is a special day, on which the Alter Rebbe would deliver a maamar, but only in the presence of those who would become his successors, the Mitteler Rebbe and the Tzemach Tzedek. The subsequent Rebbeim did the same, and they instructed that it be kept a secret. How then could my father-in-law reveal it to everyone? This can be understood based on the answer to a similar question: we find that regarding Torah study in general, there are greater innovations in Torah in later generations, even though the souls of previous generations were greater. It is explained that this is like a dwarf situated upon on a giant's shoulders, where the dwarf, while smaller than the giant, sees farther than the giant. But the question remains – why did Hashem make it that the lower souls would be able to see further in Torah than the greater souls? The answer is that specifically because it is a lower soul, it needs greater knowledge and better “ammunition” to fulfill its mission of transforming and lighting up the world. Similarly, because the third day of Selichos is so previous, its quality was not revealed in earlier times, but it was revealed specifically in later generations to equip us so that we can overcome the intensified darkness of these times. And since my father-in-law the Rebbe revealed this to us, and it has to do with delivering a maamar etc. – it is clear that everyone must use this information and the special quality of the day to fulfill his mission in the world through the inner dimension of the Torah etc.2 excerpts from sichah of Monday, 25 Elul, 5735. How Love Evolves: Your Deepest Love Flows Exquisitely from Your Connection with Self This text-based class is the second in a series on Likkutei Torah Maamar "Atem Nitzavim," a discourse said by the Alter Rebbe on Shabbos Parshas Nitzavim, 28 Elul, 5662/1802, and was presented by Rabbi YY Jacobson on Thursday, 18 Elul, 5785, September 11, 2025, Parshas Ki Savo, at Bais Medrash Ohr Chaim in Monsey, NY. This class on the second chapter of the discourse discusses covenantal love vs. transactional love, and why people make a "covenant of love," inviting the connection to graduate to a space that is supra-rational. He discusses the love of David and Yonoson, and the love that Moshe engendered after the sin of the golden calf. We discuss the meaning of love that flows from your truest essence and becomes the most exquisite extension of your self-love. View Source Sheets: https://portal.theyeshiva.net/api/source-sheets/9765

The Pyramids vs. the Menorah: How Do I Know When to Trust a Leader? This is the first of a series of text-based classes on Likkutei Torah, Maamar "Atem Nitzavim," a discourse said by the Alter Rebbe on Shabbos Parshas Nitzavim, 28 Elul, 5662/1802, and was presented by Rabbi YY Jacobson on Wednesday, 17 Elul, 5785, September 10, 2025, Parshas Ki Savo, at Bais Medrash Ohr Chaim in Monsey, NY. This class explores the true meaning of unity, how on Rosh Hashanah all the sparks of all the souls return to their singular source. We explore how in holiness there is never an absolute hierarchy, only a functional one, because holiness recognizes the singular source of all and the interconnectedness of everyone and everything. The class also discusses the true meaning of leadership, how the true leader sees himself or herself merely as a channel, never hijacking the energy for themselves and their ego.View Source Sheets: https://portal.theyeshiva.net/api/source-sheets/9762
Have you ever considered that while Hashem makes Himself extraordinarily accessible during Elul, we still need to make the effort to meet Him? This profound question sits at the heart of our exploration of the Alter Rebbe's famous "King is in the Field" teaching. The concept, originated by Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi (founder of Chabad Hasidism), presents a beautiful metaphor for understanding divine accessibility during the month of Elul. Just as a king might leave his palace and venture into the fields where his subjects can approach him directly without formal protocols, Hashem becomes more approachable during this special time. But the challenging question remains: if the King is in the field, are you?We delve into where exactly this "field" might be found, drawing on the Talmudic teaching that Hashem is found within the "four cubits of halacha" – approximately 80 inches according to Rav Moshe Feinstein's calculation. This suggests that our meeting place with Hashem exists within the framework of Torah study, prayer, and Jewish practice. The quiet moments of nighttime learning create particularly fertile ground for authentic spiritual connection. The Alter Rebbe, a Torah genius who authored a Shulchan Aruch before turning 25, understood how to make profound spiritual concepts accessible. His teaching challenges us to wake from spiritual slumber this Elul through honest Torah study that illuminates our hearts and reconnects us to our divine source. Rabbi Jacobson will discuss the following topics: What should be our focus as we begin the third week of Elul? What is unique about the month of Elul? Why is the entire month of Elul not a holiday due to the revelation of the Divine compassion during this month? Why does Elul include V'Dodi Li (from above), which seems to be primarily during the holidays in Tishrei? Why am I not seeing the blessings that I asked for from the “king in the field”? What else can I do to help reveal these blessings?Did the Rebbe say that the parable of the “king in the field” teaches us that influential people need to go into the fields to greet regular people and make sure they have everything they need physically and spiritually? Is there a correlation between the king leaving his palace and going into the field to the concept of dira b'tachtonim, the king leaving the higher worlds and dwelling in the lower worlds? If we are meeting the “king in the field” why do we wait an entire month to coronate Him? Is there a connection between Elul and education? How can an emotionally unhealthy person prepare for the New Year? What can be done about the dissonance between being extremely religious in certain areas and despicable in human relationships? What is the significance of this day? How did Chassidus come to address the abovementioned dissonance? How does Chai Elul infuse more life into Elul to help us get ready for the new year? Do we know of other “new” souls besides the Alter Rebbe? What lessons can we learn from this week's Parsha? Chai Elul Ki Tavo
Rabbi Jacobson will discuss the following topics: What should be our focus as we begin the second week of Elul? How can Elul practically help us in our daily struggles? Since we can do teshuva in the “blink of an eye” why do we need thirty days of Elul and ten days of teshuva? How do we apply the Alter Rebbe's example of the “king in the field” in our daily lives? What did the Rebbe add to this example? Is there value in just wanting to be better, even if no action is taken? How can we ensure that we are creating the proper containers in Elul to receive the Divine blessings? Can we tap into Elul's energy all year round? How does sof maaseh b'machshava techila relate to the month of Elul as the last month of the year leading into the new year? What personal and global lessons can we learn from this week's Parsha in how to fight our life battles? How do we explain the Torah allowing taking a “beautiful woman” captive during war? What are the practical applications of remembering what Amalek did to us? Can we apply Amalek to the war against Hamas? Why aren't more religious Jews joining this war? Why are sin offerings brought in the holy temple relevant for us to read today, as well as after the geulah when evil will be eradicated? Are we davening properly? What impact should prayer have on us and our emotional intelligence? How can we make davening a more transformative experience? Ki Teitzei Prayer What can Chassidus teach us about trichotillomania (hair pulling)? As a non-Jew, will learning Hebrew and studying Torah make my life happy?
