“Praise to the holiest”From The Dream of Gerontius by St. John Henry NewmanPraise to the Holiest in the heightAnd in the depth be praise:In all His words most wonderful;Most sure in all His ways!O loving wisdom of our God!When all was sin and shame,A second Adam to the fightAnd to the rescue came.O wisest love! that flesh and bloodWhich did in Adam fail,Should strive afresh against the foe,Should strive and should prevail;And that a higher gift than graceShould flesh and blood refine,God's Presence and His very Self,And Essence all-divine.O generous love! that He who smoteIn man for man the foe,The double agony in manFor man should undergo;And in the garden secretly,And on the cross on high,Should teach His brethren and inspireTo suffer and to die.On November 1 of last year, All Saints Day, Pope Leo XIV declared Saint John Henry Newman – Cardinal Newman – as a Doctor of the Church. There are thousands of saints—but there are only 38 Doctors: saints who not only inspire us by their example and aid us by their intercession, but whose writing and teaching have had a profound impact on the Church. Cardinal Newman's writings have shaped the Church's understanding in many ways—especially his teaching on the development of doctrine and on Catholic education. Newman was more than a theologian: he was a preacher, a poet, even a novelist. The poem Scott read is taken from his long poem The Dream of Gerontius, which was published in 1865, when Newman was 64 years old. This poem is written in parts like a verse drama or an oratorio (it was later magnificently set to music by Elgar).Gerontius means “old man.” In the poem, Gerontius is an “everyman,” a “soul” who experiences death and what comes after death.The poem begins with Gerontius, the old man, on his deathbed, friends and priest gathered around, praying for him. But his death is only the beginning. Most of the poem takes the form of a dialogue with his guardian angel, who introduces him to the mysterious world of heaven and helps him prepare to meet God face to face. At the end, he comes before God's throne, and then is led –joyfully - to Purgatory to be made ready for heaven.The poem Scott read is one of several choruses of angelical beings which the soul hears along the way. It's a song of praise, which marvels at the “loving wisdom” and “wisest love” of God in the redeeming work of Christ. The poem uses the Scriptural image of Christ as the “new Adam.” In Adam, our “flesh and blood” was vanquished; in Christ, that same flesh and blood prevails against the enemy. But there is more than a victory won here: there is “a higher gift than grace,” for in Christ our “flesh and blood” are “refined,” with God's Presence, Self, and Essence. Christ is truly human—and truly God.The last two stanzas speak of the suffering Christ underwent, for us, and as one of us. The “double agony” is interior and exterior: anguish of soul in Gethsemane, and physical torment on the cross. God's wise love is also “generous love”: for when Christ dies on the cross, he is still teaching, showing us how to suffer, and how to die.This song comes close to the end of The Dream of Gerontius. This great mystery of our redemption is what prepares the soul to enter the presence of God. And judgment is no longer terrifying. In life, says Gerontius, “the thought of death / And judgment was to me most terrible. / I had it aye before me, and I saw / The Judge severe e'en in the crucifix. / Now that the hour is come, my fear is fled.” In the face of Christ's generous, self-emptying love, fear is no longer possible.Newman's poem about the life that awaits us after death has the feeling of an adventure, a great journey, as the soul discovers that life is not over—it has only just begun. As with poems like The Divine Comedy of Dante and Paradise Lost of Milton, we come away from The Dream of Gerontius feeling that heaven and the afterlife are more real, more vivid, than this life and this world.Newman describes eternal life with urgency and eagerness, without ever dismissing this life as unimportant. Instead, the poem invites us to live life differently, and to look to death—and even judgment—with joy and hope. As Pope Leo XIV said of Cardinal Newman, “The lives of the saints teach us that it is possible to live passionately amidst the complexity of the present, without neglecting the apostolic mandate to shine like stars in the world” ( Pope Leo XIV).
Romans 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Chapter 1 of Romans Paul says in verse 16 that the Gospel is the power of God unto salvation. In Chapters1-3 He declares all have sinned and are guilty before God. In chapter 4 Paul shows that David and Abraham were justified by faith not works In chapter 5 Paul starts out in the first 11 verses showing us that since we are saved by faith we are kept by Jesus' power not by our own works and Paul gives us 11 benefits of trusting Christ Uses the words through Jesus Christ 6 times in verses 1, 2, 9, 10, 11—Twice in verse 11. Romans 5:1-11 Having been Justified: Justification is the pardoning of guilt and the penalty of sin (legally being declared righteous because Jesus paid the penalty for our sin) 1. V-1 We have Peace with God: John 16:33a These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace We have declared ourselves at war with God because of our sinful rebellion which means He is at war with us too James 4:4 Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity or hostility with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. · But if you have trusted Christ that war is ended Phil 4:6-7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. 2. V-2 We have Access to God: Or an introduction to Grace through Jesus Christ The word access means to be ushered into the presence of royalty, Jesus through his sacrifice on the cross ushers us into the very presence of God. It also means a harbor or haven, we are safe now in the arms of God just like a ship in the harbor. Eph 2:18 For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father. 3. V-2 We have Standing before God: A permanent secure position in grace Eph 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ., 19 Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, Heb 10:19-22 19 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and having a High Priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Rev. 1:6 He has made us priests and kings 1Peter 5:12 By Silvanus, our faithful brother as I consider him, I have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God in which you stand. 4. V-2 We can rejoice in the Hope of the Glory of God: 1Peter 1:3-5 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. · A hope of heaven because Jesus paid the price and God promised to save us if we believe that he paid for our sins. Hebrews 6:19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, 20 where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

Welcome to Daily Bitachon . We're on our Friday series where we talk about Shabbat . In our prayers of Shabbat , interestingly, every tefilah has a different theme. Friday night, we say Vayechulu , we say some pesukim that talk about creation. And we say that it's zecher l'maasei breishit . It's there to remember creation. In the Shacharit prayers, which we're going to discuss now, we mention Matan Torah and how special the Jewish people are. As it says, in Shemot 31:16, ושמרו בני ישראל את השבת, the Jewish people will keep the Shabbat , לעשות את השבת לדורותם ברית עולם. It's an everlasting covenant, it's a deal. Who's it a deal? ביני ובין בני ישראל. It's between God and the Jewish people. Ot hi l'olam . It's an everlasting sign. כי ששת ימים עשה ה' את השמים ואת הארץ. God created the heavens and earth in six days וביום השביעי שבת וינפש. And after that it says, and God didn't give it to the other nations of the world. We'll see how exactly that fits in. There's another pasuk in Shemot Lamed Alef Yud Gimmel that also talks about the ot , and it says כי אות היא ביני וביניכם לדורותיכם. It is an everlasting sign, l'daat , to know כי אני ה' מקדשכם, to know that I am Hashem that makes you holy. And Rashi says, what does that mean? What's this ot ? אות גדולה היא בינינו. It's a great sign between us, as we said, it's a sign, it's a covenant, it's a deal. What is that? She'bacharti bachem , I chose you, ונחלתי לכם את יום מנוחתי למנוחה. I chose you, and how do I know I chose you? Because I gave you the day to rest that I rest on. God allowed us into His resting day. That's a sign of how special we are. That is a sign of honor. We have Shabbat and other nations do not. And that now we understand the continuation that we say in the Amidah . ולא נתתו ה' אלוקינו לגויי הארצות. God did not give this to the the nations of the world. ולא הנחלתו מלכנו לעובדי אלילים. And the idol worshipers did not get this inheritance. Gam b'menuchato , in His resting day, lo yishkenu areilim , the fore skinned ones, those that are not Jewish, did not have a brit milah , cannot dwell in this day of menuchah . כי לעמך ישראל נתתו באהבה. God gave it to us lovingly, l'zera Yaakov , to the seed of Yaakov , asher bam bacharta , God chose us. As Rashi says, bacharti bachem , I chose you. So we walk around with Shabbat . It's a sign that we're special, that we're different. Just like tefillin is a sign, brit milah is a sign. It's interesting that it says that lo yishkenu areilim , those non-circumcised, fore skinned people cannot have anything to do with menuchah of Shabbat . All these signs are signs that we're special. It's interesting, it says that anything shows up in three dimensions: people, place, and time. Holiness shows up in people, place, and time. Holiest person, the Kohen Gadol . Holiest place, the Holy of Holies. Holiest time, Yom Kippur . And they all come together as the Kohen Gadol enters the Holy of Holies on Yom Kippur . And this sign that God has is also in people, place, and person. It's a sign in people with the brit milah . It's a sign in place, the tefillin are a box which represents space, makom . And lastly, it's a sign in time, Shabbat . And that's what we're talking about, to be proud and walk around with this badge of honor, the badge of Shabbat that separates us. Something to be proud of. You can wear the king's garments, so to say. You can enter into this special elite place that no one's allowed into, but us. So much so that it says goy she'shavat chayav mitah . If a goy decides to keep Shabbat , he's chayav mitah . The Chida in ספר נחל קדומים על במדבר 22 colon 28 explains why. Because he says if someone decides to use the king's scepter, he's chayav mitah . God gave us this scepter to use because we're His children. There's another analogy I once saw brought down in one of the Midrashim , that if a king and queen are sitting alone in a room. some servant walks in, off with his head. Shabbat is the time when God and the Jewish people are alone, and how dare anyone else enter into that special time. So these are all unbelievable appreciations of this great sign of Shabbat and therefore, let us truly appreciate it and take in all that wonderful, beautiful time.

In this morning's class, Rabbi Yisroel Bernath dove into one of the strangest, most beautiful marriage scenes in the entire Torah, Yitzchak and Rivkah caught “jesting” behind a window. Why does the Torah use a word for laughter to describe intimacy? Why is the first Jew born into the covenant literally named “He Will Laugh”? And why does Rivkah's name hint to a yoke of oxen, two forces pulling together toward transformation?Using Rashi, Midrash, Zohar, and the Alter Rebbe's revolutionary maamar from 5569, we uncovered a powerful Chassidic idea: Laughter is born from contradiction. From the unexpected. From two worlds that shouldn't fitand yet somehow do. That's the secret of Yitzchak and Rivkah. That's the secret of humanity. PRESENCE PRAYER THE VEIL What is the veil? The veil represents the mindset of separation from God in the soul. Before Adam and Eve were tempted by the serpent to disobey God they lived in the presence of God and were not conscious of any separation between themselves and God within their souls. But after they disobeyed God and listened to darkness, their souls were plunged into a mindset of separation from Him. Their once innocent and blameless souls became self-serving and willful, hiding in the shadows of shame and guilt from God. Devising strategies to cover up and blame others for their disobedience. This became the separated soul life of humanity from that time on. The veil The first time this veil is spoken of in the Bible is when Moses went into the presence of the Lord when he received the commandments on Mt Sinai. The Israelites were afraid to look at him or come near him because being in God's presence caused his face to shine so brightly that he had to cover it with a veil. Exodus 34:29 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, and the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him… The temple also had a veil of separation which separated people from Gods presence. No one was allowed to go through that temple veil, except for the high priest once a year on the day of atonement - they would actually sturck dead if they did. Atonement was celebrated last Sunday and today the Feast of Tabernacles is celebrated sukkot (John 7:37 living water) Hebrews 9:7 into the second chamber (behind the veil) the high priest went alone once a year, with the blood of sacrifice, which he offered for himself and for the people's sins committed in ignorance; the Holy Spirit indicating this, that the way into the Holiest of All was not yet a reality while the first tabernacle was still standing… 11. But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. Paul called the Old Covenant of the Ten Commandments given through Moses the “ministry of death, carved in letters on stone” and he contrasts this with the New Covenant given through Christ, where the Commandments are written in our hearts through the Holy Spirit. When Jesus died for us on the cross, he went through the veil of separation for all of humanity, making the way for us to pass through the veil also and to live a life with the mindset of non-separation between us and God. Matthew 27:50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. This was an incredible physical representation orchestrated by God to show us this Old Covenant was over. The veil was physically torn. The whole earth shook. Just imagine that. Interestingly, that was the end of blood sacrifices for sin for Israel. The veil was torn e through his flesh and blood sacrifice on the cross for all of us, for eternity. The Old Covenant's glory was torn and replaced by a New Covenant- a glory that is eternal and internal—Christ in us, the hope of glory (Ephesians 3:4). No one in the Old Covenant had an inner life of the Holy Spirit within them.. What is the Veil? The veil is the flesh. What is the flesh? The flesh is our self-made soul where we build an inner self life that is a very poor reflection of how our original spirit self was uniquely created by God to be like him as his child. But the self of the flesh puts the false ‘shadow of us' on display. This ‘flesh' becomes the veil of separation until we realise that we can have direct, unveiled face to face intimacy with God through the Spirit, transforming us from the inside out. He comes into our vulnerability and weakness and shines through with his strength. The Bible says that Jesus came in the flesh (John 1:14) but he went through life with a totally innocent and blameless soul and with a totally unveiled face. His soul was tempted in all points such as we are, but he did not sin (Hebrews 4:15 hamartia – miss the mark). Jesus did not have to create his own shadow me-self in his soul- which is the flesh. There was no veil of a mindset of separation from his Father. And when He died for us on the cross, Jesus went through the veil of separation for all of humanity, making the way for us to pass through the veil also and to live a life with the mindset of non-separation between us and God. Hebrews 10:19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the veil, that is, through his flesh. The Bible says the whole world is under darkness – under the influence of evil 1 John 5:19 describing a world separated from God with a veil over their face that turns them inward towards their soul self instead of towards the face of God. Just like adam and eve did We can get pulled by our soul's problems to turn inwards into our shadow life or we can get drawn by the Holy Spirit to turn to the Lord, just as the sunlight draws a sunflower to turn to the sun so that it can grow and get life Paul spoke about Israel in the Old Covenant compared to us in the New Covenant But their minds were blinded. For to this day, when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains between them and God's glorious presence, because only through Christ is it taken away. Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts. But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, with unveiled face, beholding in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory. (2Corinthians 3:18) The turning can be gradual, like walking up a hill carrying the burdens of our soul till we get to the top and enter the presence of God, the tabernacle, the holy place where God is, the room spoken about in Matthew 6:6 when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. That turning is actually our repentance – turning from self to God. And when you walk up that hill Jesus is helping you carry the burdens, and while you are in the room Jesus helps you give the burdens to the Father. When you come back down the hill the Father rewards you openly – that is, he will supernaturally show you in some outward way that he has heard you and that he has brought things together for good in such a coincidental way that you know it could only have been God that has done it. The Old Testament brought harsh judgement and condemnation. But it highlights that with Gods Glory behind a veil, they were always missing the mark by trying to put God on display in their own lives in their own strength rather than trusting Him and putting Him on display. That was to show us that we can't live without God With-in us. But even though we now live a life without the veil, we often act as if it is still there. When people say repent from your sins, (repent meaning turning from and turning to) and sin meaning to miss the mark- all that is asking you to do is to turn from yourself towards God to help you with why you are missing the mark. That's all sin does, it stops you from living with Him and for Him. In the New Testament the Spirit brings life, forgiveness, mercy, transformation, and freedom (2 Cor. 3:6, 17). In Presence prayer we come to know God for who he is and what he says and what he does. We know we are loved and mercifully accepted for who we are as our new ‘God with us' self. Our hearts desire becomes to please him. The veil of separation has been torn down by Jesus. The Father and Jesus and Holy Spirit have come to make their home in us and we delight to do our housecleaning like never before – to sparkle. When people come to the house of our heart, they can feel welcomed and blessed as God can now be on display and not just us. Paul unveils this wonderful mystery in Colossians. Col. 1:26 This mystery was kept secret for ages and generations past, but now it has been revealed to God's people who desire to live with him and for him. For God wanted them to know that the riches and glory of Christ are for all of humanity (Gentiles). And this is the mystery - Christ lives in you, giving you assurance of sharing his glory (His life on display though you). Simply turning to God as Father Son and Holy Spirit in our minds and hearts as often as we can brings us closer to the reality of God's life within us and makes way for his life to shine through us. We have this treasure in earthen vessels so let us treasure our treasure and the turning takes the veil of separation away and allows our own and other people's lives to be enriched. The present moment is always the most significant time in history - living with God. Paul OSullivan – pauloss@me.com
The celebration of Halloween represents a stark spiritual battleground where Christians unknowingly participate in rituals with demonic origins. Modern Halloween practices mirror ancient witchcraft traditions while churches attempt to "Christianize" these customs through harvest festivals that ultimately look identical to secular celebrations. ____________ VERITY METALS Convert your 401k or IRA into physical gold to protect your retirement from a volatile stock market and inflation. Have you ever found yourself needing to apologize to someone… and dreading it? Daily Dose of Hope September 24, 2025 Scripture – Luke 23 Prayer: Lord Jesus, We come before you this morning, thanking you for a new day. Lord, you are good and we rejoice in your holy and powerful name. As we begin our day, Lord, help us focus on you. Help us set aside our scattered thoughts and focus on your Word and what you want us to learn today. We get so distracted and self-consumed. Forgive us for that, Lord. In these next few moments of silence, help us have laser focus on your voice... In Your Powerful Name, Amen. Welcome back to the Daily Dose of Hope, the devotional/podcast that complements the New Hope Church daily Bible reading plan. We are currently working our way through a deep dive into the Gospels and Acts. Today, we are deep diving into Luke 23. Today, we start with Jesus before Pilate and Herod. Both Roman men believe that Jesus is innocent. Pilate actually tries to get the people to release Jesus, but the crowd is stirred up. They want blood. Jesus' innocence is not the point to them. They are looking for a way to get rid of this trouble-maker. And these men are not willing to stand up for what's right. There was a man named Simon from Cyrene who was passing by and they forced him to carry the cross. Cyrene was on the tip of Africa so this man was far from home! And here he was, just going about his business, and he is enlisted, or more like seized, to carry the cross of the Savior of the world. I'm guessing that Jesus' physical body was incredibly weak and bloody by this point. And Simon walked by him, carrying the cross that would serve to execute Jesus but also save all humanity from their sin. We don't know what happened to Simon after the crucifixion. He isn't mentioned again in Scripture. But my guess is that his life was never the same again. An encounter with Jesus is always life-changing. The text in which Jesus dies on the cross is called the Good Friday scripture. It may seem odd that we would call the day that Jesus was crucified and died “good.” Apparently, the term came into common use in the 1200s because for us, it was a truly good day, as Jesus became the final sacrifice for all sin for all people for all time. As the full expression of God's love for us, Jesus voluntarily gave his life so that we could be reconciled to holy God. It is very much good. There is a lot to be said about the crucifixion but I wanted to highlight something in particular. Right before Jesus breathed his last breath on the cross, the curtain in the Temple was torn down the middle. This is the curtain that separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place (the Holiest of Holies) where the ark of the covenant was kept and the presence of God remained. When the curtain tore, it was a sign that the New Covenant was instituted. Because of Jesus' sacrifice (the final sacrifice for sin), those who believe in him can now go directly to the throne of God's grace. When holy God looks at us, he doesn't see our sinfulness but the blood of Christ. Thus, there are no more barriers that can separate us from God. I'd like to close today with a prayer that is an adaptation of Hebrews 10:19-25: Thank you, Lord, that we can boldly enter heaven's Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place. And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God's house, let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ's blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water. Lord, help us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise. Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near. Amen. Blessings, Pastor Vicki

Message Take Aways:1. As Solomon methodically designed the temple to glorify God, so we as the Church are to strive to honor the Lord as His temple—“Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.” 1 Corinthians 6:16, 17b2. God promised Solomon and His people Israel great blessing if they dedicated themselves to walking in His ways and we likewise will be blessed as we continue in His word—“Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.” 1 Timothy 4:163. The precise details of the temple's construction and components were intended to convey the glory of God to generate reverence in those who approached His presence reminding us of the blessing it is to now enter in with boldness because of the work of Jesus Christ—“Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, and having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.” Hebrews 10:19-22

Arcana Coelestia 7550. And that My name may be told in the whole earth. That this signifies that thus where the church is the Lord may be acknowledged as the only God, is evident from the signification of “name,” as being everything in one complex by which the Lord is worshiped (see n. 2724, 3006, 6674); and as the veriest essential of worship is the acknowledgment that the Lord is the only God, and that His Human is Divine, and that from this proceeds all faith and love, therefore by the “name of Jehovah being told” is signified that the Lord is to be acknowledged as the only God (that the Divine Human of the Lord is the “name of Jehovah,” see n. 2628, 6887), and from the signification of “the earth,” as being the church (see just above, n. 7547). That Jehovah or the Lord in this and in many other passages wills that His might and power may appear, and His name be told, and elsewhere that He be humbly worshiped and adored, seems as if He desires to show forth His glory, and as if He loves adoration for the sake of Himself. But quite different is the real case. It is not for the sake of Himself, but for the sake of the human race; not from self-glory, but from love; for He wills to be conjoined with the human race, and to give them eternal life and happiness. This cannot be done unless the man is in humble worship; and there can be no humble worship unless the man acknowledges and believes that he himself is dust and ashes, that is, nothing but evil, and that Jehovah or the Lord is the Greatest and the Holiest, and that he dare not from himself approach Him. When man is in such humble worship, then the Lord can flow in with the life of His love, and give heaven and eternal happiness. This is the reason why Jehovah or the Lord so greatly extols His own power and glory in the Word. AC 7541(2)... With the good who are to be uplifted into heaven, evils are successively separated, and the good are filled with goods according to the faculty of reception acquired in the world. And with the evil who are to be cast into hell, goods are successively separated, and the evil are successively filled with evils, according to the faculty of reception acquired in the world. Daily Dose of Hope July 22, 2025 Scripture - Matthew 27:32-56 Prayer: Holy and Perfect God, Thank you for your divine plan. Thank you for not giving up on your people and sending Jesus. Your love and care for us is hard to comprehend. Help us be a better reflection of your love in all we do. Amen. Welcome back to the Daily Dose of Hope, a deep dive into the Gospels and Acts. Today, we are diving into part two of Matthew 27, which includes the crucifixion and the death of Jesus. Let's start with the crucifixion. Matthew has a lot of detail. We meet Simon of Cyrene who was forced to carry Jesus' cross. While Simon certainly had no choice in the matter, I'm guessing his life was never the same after that. He had carried the cross for the Savior of the world. Jesus is offered wine with gall (which was very bitter and possibly offered to dull pain) but he tastes it and then refuses it. His clothes are divided among the soldiers. A sign is placed above him that says, “King of the Jews.” And then there are all the insults hurled at him, from passers-by but also from those crucified next to him. So much humiliation. However, for those who witness Jesus' actual death, it is life-changing. The sky gets dark and Jesus cries out the first line of Psalm 22, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” At the time, people would reference a psalm by stating the first line and the rest of the psalm would be assumed. Psalm 22 was written by David, and it's a psalm that expresses abandonment and despair in the face of sorrow. But this leads to some questions. Did Jesus really feel abandoned by God at that moment on the cross? I mentioned this in when we discussed Mark 15 and I think it's important to emphasize again. By quoting Psalm 22, Jesus is actually expressing confidence in the face of suffering. He is trusting that God will ultimately deliver him. We gain confidence in this interpretation because it is faithful to our understanding of the Trinity as inseparable - one part of the Godhead can't abandon another part of the Godhead. There is also a distinct union of Jesus' divine and human natures. All of this comes together on the cross. Let's read Psalm 22, verses 1-8... My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish? 2 My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest. 3 Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the one Israel praises. 4 In you our ancestors put their trust; they trusted and you delivered them.5 To you they cried out and were saved; in you they trusted and were not put to shame. 6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people. 7 All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads. 8 “He trusts in the Lord,” they say, “let the Lord rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him.” And as the psalm continues (it is a bit long to real in full here), we see how the psalmist begins to express trust in the Lord and praise his name. He knows that God will deliver him. The bottom line seems to be that on the cross, Jesus bore the weight of our sin as the Son of God, but the Father did not literally abandon him, as that would divide the Trinity and undermine Christ's saving work. Jesus knew that God would deliver him but also provide a way to deliver the whole world. Hebrews 10 refers to this incredible phenomena... Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Hebrews 10:19-22 Matthew also adds that when Jesus died, the earth also shook and that some who were already dead were brought back to life. The centurion who was guarding the tomb declared that this man, Jesus, must have been the Son of God. There are two questions that are important to answer when discussing today's topic: Why was Jesus killed? and then, Why did Jesus die? They are both critical questions and the answers are different. I'm going to keep this brief but I want to at least address this. Why was Jesus killed? Well, a number of groups colluded to kill him. First, Jesus was killed because the Jewish leaders felt threatened by him. They feared him. He threatened all they thought was right and they were unwilling to open their minds to God doing something differently. They refused to believe that he was the Messiah, or we could say he wasn't the kind of Messiah that they were expecting. And they didn't like the way he had the support of the common people. But let's be clear, Jesus was also killed because his crucifixion was a political act by the Romans. They didn't want anyone out there claiming to be king of the Jews. They wanted to ensure that the only one with authority was the Roman government. Now, why did Jesus die? That's a whole different question. Jesus died so that we could be cleansed of sin and walk intimately with a holy God. Jesus, fulfilling Old Testament prophecy, became the final sacrifice for all sin for all time. Ever since the fall, God had been on a mission to redeem the world. The Law was part of that but the people could not keep the Law. What the Law did was demonstrate how broken, flawed, and sinful us humans really are. Something much more drastic was needed. So, God sent Jesus. Jesus was God with flesh on. When we say that Jesus is the Son of God, that means that he was the second person of the Trinity, God himself. He came to earth to live among us and demonstrate to us a new way of doing life, one in which God reigns as King. Everything Jesus did – his whole life as well as his death and resurrection, was intended to demonstrate the fundamental values of God's Kingdom. Of course, one of those values was love. Jesus was and is love. We see this on the cross. We've read about all the human actions that led to the cross but this was God's divine plan. Jesus knew it had to happen. Jesus knew this was the only way. So he went voluntarily to the cross. He was God and he could have called a legion of angels down to save him. But he didn't. He went through with all the humiliation and torture. For us. For all of us. He died for us. Blessings, Pastor Vicki

Purim 5785 - "The Holiest Day of the Year?" by Josh Rosenfeld
This message is by Bill Parker and taken from Hebrews 9. Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary. 2For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary. 3And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all; 4Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; 5And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly. 6Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God. 7But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people: 8The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing: 9Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience;

Main Theme: Getting to Where God Is The central idea revolves around the desire to be in God's presence, drawing from the story of Moses being called up the mountain. "We need to get where God is." God's desire is to be with humanity, despite our imperfections. "Why would He love me? Why would He love you? Why would He want to be with me?" The speaker expresses a longing to be in God's presence, where relief and connection are found. "It is my heart's desire it is the goal of my soul is to be where he is...sometimes you pray a thousand tears and never get into the holiest of holies but I like it when brother I'm just able to whisper one word and I'm right there I'm already crossed into that place that is within the veil" The Tabernacle as a Model The Old Testament tabernacle is presented as a model for approaching God. The tabernacle had three sections: the outer court, the holy place, and the holiest of holies. To reach God, one had to start in the outer court. "If you want to get to where God is today, you're going to have to start just like they did." Entrance to the outer court was through a single curtain on the east, symbolizing that access to God is through Christ. "If you're going to get to God, you've got to come through Christ." The Outer Court: Repentance and Sacrifice The outer court represents the initial step of repentance and sacrifice. Entering the outer court requires giving up on oneself and repenting of sin. "You're going to have to give up on yourself...you'll never get to God until you've repented of sin." It involves presenting one's body as a living sacrifice, as mentioned in Romans 12:1. "Present your bodies a living sacrifice unto God." This sacrifice is not comfortable, as the "living sacrifice" doesn't want to die. "Hey, you know the problem with this living sacrifice is they don't want to die." The Holy Spirit helps in crucifying the flesh and bringing it under subjection. "If you'll turn yourself over to the Holy Ghost...He can crucify you." Without sacrifice, one cannot progress beyond the outer court. "Most people are in the outer court. As far as they get...You don't go no farther until the sacrifice has been made." The shedding of blood is essential for remission of sins, fulfilled by Jesus Christ's sacrifice. "Without the shedding of blood, there's no remission of sins." The Holy Place: Light, Bread, and Worship The holy place, inside the tent, contains the golden candlestick, the table of showbread, and the altar of incense. The golden candlestick provides light, symbolizing spiritual illumination. "Brother, there's light when you get into the holy place." The table of showbread, with twelve loaves, represents the Word of God and spiritual nourishment. "You need the Word of God this morning, friend...so you can partake of it and find the power and the strength of God's holy Word today." The 12 loaves represent the 12 tribes of Israel, and the 66 books of the Bible. The altar of incense signifies worship and praise. "Brother, they were bringing their worship unto the Holy God. Brother, He inhabits your praise today." Entering the holy place requires cleaning up from the "grime and guts" of the outer court. "There's a place to clean up right before you go in to the holy place." One must not only repent and sacrifice, but also seek light, nourishment, and engage in worship. "Light, bread, and worship." The Holiest of Holies: The Mercy Seat The ultimate goal is to reach the holiest of holies, where the Ark of the Covenant and the mercy seat are located. The Ark contains the tablets of stone, Aaron's rod that budded, and the pot of manna. These items are covered by the mercy seat, symbolizing God's forgiveness and grace.

Jesus' Command to Love: The Hardest and Holiest Calling Jesus gives us His commandment to “love one another,” . . . . . . emphasizing that true love, as exemplified by Jesus, is the most difficult yet most essential commandment. Rather than focusing on religious rituals like daily prayer or tithing, Jesus calls for radical, sacrificial love modeled after his own. The Homily underscores that love is only possible through the Holy Spirit and involves humility, equality, and self-giving. The Early Church It also recounts the early Church's struggle with integrating Gentile believers, particularly at the Council of Jerusalem, where leaders chose not to impose the full burden of Jewish law on Gentile converts . . . except out of love and respect for others' consciences. The Church's journey through subsequent theological disputes (e.g., Jesus' divinity and nature) illustrates that doctrinal clarity often takes centuries, but division still persists today between “conservatives” and “progressives.” The Homily calls for unity in the Church through love empowered by the Holy Spirit, rather than through labels or legalism Listen to this Meditation Media. Daily Dose of Hope May 14, 2025 Day 3 of Week 7 Scripture - Mark 15:33-47 Prayer: Holy God, How amazing it is that we can come before you today. You are God of all things, Lord of everything, and yet you care about each of us. We give you glory and praise. We thank you most of all for Jesus, who made it possible for us to walk hand in hand with a holy God. Help us see today's Scripture through fresh eyes. Keep teaching us, Lord. Continue to reveal yourself to us. We are open and grateful. In Your Name, Amen. Welcome to the Daily Dose of Hope, a devotional connected to the daily reading plan at New Hope Church in Brandon, Florida. Today, we are finishing up Mark 15, which is the death of Jesus Christ. The text detailing Jesus' death on the cross is what we call the Good Friday scripture. The text starts with darkness. How appropriate. And it says that at the ninth hour, Jesus spoke his last words, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” This statement was in reference to Psalm 22. At the time, people would reference a psalm by stating the first line and the rest of the psalm would be assumed. Psalm 22 was written by David, and it's a psalm that expresses abandonment and despair in the face of sorrow. But this leads to some questions. Did Jesus really feel abandoned by God at that moment on the cross? And how would that work? Here is a thought - by quoting Psalm 22, Jesus is actually expressing confidence in the face of suffering, trusting that God will ultimately deliver him. The bottom line seems to be that on the cross, Jesus bore the weight of our sin as the God-man, but the Father did not literally abandon him, as that would divide the Trinity and undermine Christ's saving work. Jesus knew that God would deliver him but also provide a way to deliver the whole world. Hebrews 10:19-22 The chapter closes with Joseph of Arimathea taking Jesus' body and placing it in a tomb. Joseph was a wealthy man and also a member of the Jewish ruling council. It is implied that he is a believer in Jesus and if he tried to hide it before, there is no hiding it now. Joseph has gone to great risk and expense to make sure Jesus' body is wrapped and buried. Of course, at this point, they are deep in grief. All feels heavy. But Sunday is coming. Blessings, Pastor Vicki

Rev. Dr. Doyle Holbird was preacher for this service. Hebrews 10:19-25: Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, and having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.
