Micah 1–7 Micah 1–7 (Listen) 1 The word of the LORD that came to Micah of Moresheth in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem. The Coming Destruction 2   Hear, you peoples, all of you;1    pay attention, O earth, and all that is in it,  and let the Lord GOD be a witness against you,    the Lord from his holy temple.3   For behold, the LORD is coming out of his place,    and will come down and tread upon the high places of the earth.4   And the mountains will melt under him,    and the valleys will split open,  like wax before the fire,    like waters poured down a steep place.5   All this is for the transgression of Jacob    and for the sins of the house of Israel.  What is the transgression of Jacob?    Is it not Samaria?  And what is the high place of Judah?    Is it not Jerusalem?6   Therefore I will make Samaria a heap in the open country,    a place for planting vineyards,  and I will pour down her stones into the valley    and uncover her foundations.7   All her carved images shall be beaten to pieces,    all her wages shall be burned with fire,    and all her idols I will lay waste,  for from the fee of a prostitute she gathered them,    and to the fee of a prostitute they shall return. 8   For this I will lament and wail;    I will go stripped and naked;  I will make lamentation like the jackals,    and mourning like the ostriches.9   For her wound is incurable,    and it has come to Judah;  it has reached to the gate of my people,    to Jerusalem. 10   Tell it not in Gath;    weep not at all;  in Beth-le-aphrah    roll yourselves in the dust.11   Pass on your way,    inhabitants of Shaphir,    in nakedness and shame;  the inhabitants of Zaanan    do not come out;  the lamentation of Beth-ezel    shall take away from you its standing place.12   For the inhabitants of Maroth    wait anxiously for good,  because disaster has come down from the LORD    to the gate of Jerusalem.13   Harness the steeds to the chariots,    inhabitants of Lachish;  it was the beginning of sin    to the daughter of Zion,  for in you were found    the transgressions of Israel.14   Therefore you shall give parting gifts2    to Moresheth-gath;  the houses of Achzib shall be a deceitful thing    to the kings of Israel.15   I will again bring a conqueror to you,    inhabitants of Mareshah;  the glory of Israel    shall come to Adullam.16   Make yourselves bald and cut off your hair,    for the children of your delight;  make yourselves as bald as the eagle,    for they shall go from you into exile. Woe to the Oppressors 2   Woe to those who devise wickedness    and work evil on their beds!  When the morning dawns, they perform it,    because it is in the power of their hand.2   They covet fields and seize them,    and houses, and take them away;  they oppress a man and his house,    a man and his inheritance.3   Therefore thus says the LORD:  behold, against this family I am devising disaster,3    from which you cannot remove your necks,  and you shall not walk haughtily,    for it will be a time of disaster.4   In that day they shall take up a taunt song against you    and moan bitterly,  and say, “We are utterly ruined;    he changes the portion of my people;  how he removes it from me!    To an apostate he allots our fields.”5   Therefore you will have none to cast the line by lot    in the assembly of the LORD. 6   “Do not preach”—thus they preach—    “one should not preach of such things;    disgrace will not overtake us.”7   Should this be said, O house of Jacob?    Has the LORD grown impatient?4    Are these his deeds?  Do not my words do good    to him who walks uprightly?8   But lately my people have risen up as an enemy;  you strip the rich robe from those who pass by trustingly    with no thought of war.59   The women of my people you drive out    from their delightful houses;  from their young children you take away    my splendor forever.10   Arise and go,    for this is no place to rest,  because of uncleanness that destroys    with a grievous destruction.11   If a man should go about and utter wind and lies,    saying, “I will preach to you of wine and strong drink,”    he would be the preacher for this people!12   I will surely assemble all of you, O Jacob;    I will gather the remnant of Israel;  I will set them together    like sheep in a fold,  like a flock in its pasture,    a noisy multitude of men.13   He who opens the breach goes up before them;    they break through and pass the gate,    going out by it.  Their king passes on before them,    the LORD at their head. Rulers and Prophets Denounced 3   And I said:  Hear, you heads of Jacob    and rulers of the house of Israel!  Is it not for you to know justice?—2     you who hate the good and love the evil,  who tear the skin from off my people6    and their flesh from off their bones,3   who eat the flesh of my people,    and flay their skin from off them,  and break their bones in pieces    and chop them up like meat in a pot,    like flesh in a cauldron. 4   Then they will cry to the LORD,    but he will not answer them;  he will hide his face from them at that time,    because they have made their deeds evil. 5   Thus says the LORD concerning the prophets    who lead my people astray,  who cry “Peace”    when they have something to eat,  but declare war against him    who puts nothing into their mouths.6   Therefore it shall be night to you, without vision,    and darkness to you, without divination.  The sun shall go down on the prophets,    and the day shall be black over them;7   the seers shall be disgraced,    and the diviners put to shame;  they shall all cover their lips,    for there is no answer from God.8   But as for me, I am filled with power,    with the Spirit of the LORD,    and with justice and might,  to declare to Jacob his transgression    and to Israel his sin. 9   Hear this, you heads of the house of Jacob    and rulers of the house of Israel,  who detest justice    and make crooked all that is straight,10   who build Zion with blood    and Jerusalem with iniquity.11   Its heads give judgment for a bribe;    its priests teach for a price;    its prophets practice divination for money;  yet they lean on the LORD and say,    “Is not the LORD in the midst of us?    No disaster shall come upon us.”12   Therefore because of you    Zion shall be plowed as a field;  Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins,    and the mountain of the house a wooded height. The Mountain of the Lord 4   It shall come to pass in the latter days    that the mountain of the house of the LORD  shall be established as the highest of the mountains,    and it shall be lifted up above the hills;  and peoples shall flow to it,2     and many nations shall come, and say:  “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD,    to the house of the God of Jacob,  that he may teach us his ways    and that we may walk in his paths.”  For out of Zion shall go forth the law,7    and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.3   He shall judge between many peoples,    and shall decide disputes for strong nations far away;  and they shall beat their swords into plowshares,    and their spears into pruning hooks;  nation shall not lift up sword against nation,    neither shall they learn war anymore;4   but they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree,    and no one shall make them afraid,    for the mouth of the LORD of hosts has spoken.5   For all the peoples walk    each in the name of its god,  but we will walk in the name of the LORD our God    forever and ever. The Lord Shall Rescue Zion 6   In that day, declares the LORD,    I will assemble the lame  and gather those who have been driven away    and those whom I have afflicted;7   and the lame I will make the remnant,    and those who were cast off, a strong nation;  and the LORD will reign over them in Mount Zion    from this time forth and forevermore. 8   And you, O tower of the flock,    hill of the daughter of Zion,  to you shall it come,    the former dominion shall come,    kingship for the daughter of Jerusalem. 9   Now why do you cry aloud?    Is there no king in you?  Has your counselor perished,    that pain seized you like a woman in labor?10   Writhe and groan,8 O daughter of Zion,    like a woman in labor,  for now you shall go out from the city    and dwell in the open country;    you shall go to Babylon.  There you shall be rescued;    there the LORD will redeem you    from the hand of your enemies. 11   Now many nations    are assembled against you,  saying, “Let her be defiled,    and let our eyes gaze upon Zion.”12   But they do not know    the thoughts of the LORD;  they do not understand his plan,    that he has gathered them as sheaves to the threshing floor.13   Arise and thresh,    O daughter of Zion,  for I will make your horn iron,    and I will make your hoofs bronze;  you shall beat in pieces many peoples;    and shall devote9 their gain to the LORD,    their wealth to the Lord of the whole earth. The Ruler to Be Born in Bethlehem 5   10 Now muster your troops, O daughter11 of troops;    siege is laid against us;  with a rod they strike the judge of Israel    on the cheek.2   12 But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah,    who are too little to be among the clans of Judah,  from you shall come forth for me    one who is to be ruler in Israel,  whose coming forth is from of old,    from ancient days.3   Therefore he shall give them up until the time    when she who is in labor has given birth;  then the rest of his brothers shall return    to the people of Israel.4   And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD,    in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God.  And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great    to the ends of the earth.5   And he shall be their peace.   When the Assyrian comes into our land    and treads in our palaces,  then we will raise against him seven shepherds    and eight princes of men;6   they shall shepherd the land of Assyria with the sword,    and the land of Nimrod at its entrances;  and he shall deliver us from the Assyrian    when he comes into our land    and treads within our border. A Remnant Shall Be Delivered 7   Then the remnant of Jacob shall be    in the midst of many peoples  like dew from the LORD,    like showers on the grass,  which delay not for a man    nor wait for the children of man.8   And the remnant of Jacob shall be among the nations,    in the midst of many peoples,

Emilie Juliane (sometimes alternatively spelled Ämilie or Aemilie; 1637—1706) was a devout Lutheran lady, Countess of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt — and one of the most prolific of all German female hymn-writers, with almost 600 hymns attributed to her authorship.  In this Story Time episode, Sarah delves into the now-relatively-obscure life of one of 17th century Lutheranism's most noteworthy women, beginning with her tragic and turbulent childhood during the Thirty Years' War and continuing through her early orphanhood, her close relationship with her cousins (one of whom became her best friend and fellow #hymnnerd, another of whom she married), and the loss of her only daughter.   The episode ends with a discussion of the several English translations of her hymns included in recent LCMS hymnals: “Once in the Blest Baptismal Waters” (LSB 598), “Who Knows When Death May Overtake Me” (TLH 598), “The Lord Hath Helped Me Hitherto, By His Surpassing Favor” (TLH 33), “God Brought Me to This Time and Place” (LW 456).    To learn more about Emilie Juliane, check out Judith P. This week, Leslie continues her Biblical Mindset series with this practical episode on a Truth-based approach to decision-making. All throughout Scripture it is clear that God desires to guide us, direct our paths, give us wisdom, and show us the way we should go. He desires to be intimately involved in the details of our daily lives. In this message, Leslie challenges us to allow God to be the Ruler of our daily lives and decisions, instead of trying to keep Him as a “back seat driver”and unpacks several biblical principles for hearing God's voice and discerning His specific will for our lives. To learn more about our Ellerslie Discipleship programs in 2023, visit https://ellerslie.com/be-discipled/. This Sunday is Mother's Day…so, uh…Happy Mother's Day!….but we're going to be continuing in our study of John. Sorry about that. We'll be reading John 5:16-47 – a fairly long and dense passage.Jesus finds himself in the midst of a growing hostility from the religious leaders in Israel. The passage we'll be reading is a long monologue where Jesus is responding to his critics. This section is where the majority of our Christology comes from, because within this text Jesus makes some bold and startling statements about himself. It's a lot to try and unpack in one teaching, much less a short entry like this. Suffice it to say that Jesus is in trouble because the religious leaders rightly pick up what Jesus is laying down – he makes himself equal to God. Jesus never denies that, but instead drives the point home with the force of Scripture. If you get the chance, read Daniel 7 and see if you pick up any similar language being employed by Jesus. The same applies to Daniel 12:1-2.It seems pretty clear that Jesus is identifying himself as the mysterious Ruler, the Son of Man, whom Daniel foretold.Jesus points to the witnesses that testify about him in v31-40. He mentions God, John the Baptist, his own good works and teachings, and Scripture. How persuasive would those witnesses be for you? If you had been there when Jesus was ministering, what might have convinced you that He is Messiah? It's an interesting thought experiment.Jesus closes his speech with some harsh warnings for his critics. According to v42, what is it that they lack which seems to be the root of their unwillingness to believe Jesus as at least God's messenger?I'm looking forward to digging into this text with you on Sunday – hope you can join us!Click here for a pdf of the teaching slideshow.

A Sunday morning sermon by Pastor David Singh. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ is the pivotal turning point in the battle between satan and the church. In the practice of the church today, the Resurrection does not seem to be as prominent as the Cross. We are so salvation-focused that we forget the magnitude of what is happening both on earth and in heaven. The answer to the prayer “Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” is established at the Resurrection of Jesus.  Jesus rising from the dead is not just so that we can live forever, and death has no dominion over us. Jesus has taken command of earth and heaven, and the prince of this world has lost his hold. Daniel had this prophetic vision of Jesus: “there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him was given dominion and glory and kingdom.” (Dan 7:13-14) We are called to live in this ethos of Jesus being crowned king of earth and heaven, that at his name every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord.  This is what gives us an even greater longing for the consummation of the kingdom of God.  Come Lord Jesus, come soon!

Richard Feynman, winner of the Nobel Prize, said, “Nature uses only the longest threads to weave her patterns, so that each small piece of her fabric reveals the organization of the entire tapestry.” He was speaking, of course, of DNA, the organizing pattern of every type of life on our planet.Your DNA contains the archetypal pattern of your physical body, but the world around you is bigger than your body. The world around you contains an infinite number of archetypes. An archetype is any recurrent pattern recognized by the pattern-seeking right hemisphere of the brain.Archetypes exist in our minds and in the physical reality that surrounds us. Archetypes are the interface that allows us to interpret, understand, and catalogue what we are experiencing.Archetypes are the basis for all similes and metaphors. Carl Jung understood this.If you Google “Jungian archetypes” you'll find that most writers list the archetypes as twelve basic characters: Lover, Magician, Explorer, Creator, Sage, Outlaw, Hero, Jester, Everyman, Caretaker, Ruler, and the Innocent. These 12 characters populate the movies, television shows, novels, myths, and award-winning ad campaigns we experience on a daily basis. But what Jung actually taught is that archetypes are the psychological structures that allow us to recognize recurrent patterns in the world around us. They are the unconscious organizers of perceptions and ideas, since they spring from the systemic order that transcends both the external world and the human mind. Jung claimed there can be no master list of archetypes because there are an indefinite number of them, one for every recurrent pattern we observe. And not just patterns of personalities, but patterns of events, as well. Examples of events that follow an archetypal pattern include: Reproduction, Substitution, Reconfiguration, Following a Path, Collapse, Renewal, De-alignment, Re-alignment, and the Investment Bubble that always precedes delayed gratification.Every introduction of change requires a Pattern Shift, a transition from one pattern to another.Although most events could be categorized as “transitions,” an Archetypal Transition is a specific type of event, such as the ritual of Initiation (baptism,) or the ritual of Union (marriage,) or the ritual of Casting Out (divorce.) An Archetypal Transition is a portal to a new identity. Some examples of Archetypal Transition include being parented, courtship, loss of virginity, a sudden change in status, and preparation for death.Archetypes of Transition open the door for a new and different person to experience a new and different world. As a writer, you create new realities in the imaginations of your readers, so it is perfectly reasonable that you should observe and name new archetypes. You are not limited only to those named by Jung and popularized by tradition. In fact, I have invented names for several recurrent patterns that I have observed, and have mentioned several of them to you already. And now I officially give you permission to do the same:1. Go. Observe the world around you.2. Recognize and name the recurrent patterns that you find.3. Keep a list of them.Indy Beagle and I look forward to reading about your discoveries.Ciao for Niao,Roy H. WilliamsPS – Today's soirée was inspired by my partner, Vi Wickam, who sent me the Richard Feynman quote that opened today's Monday Morning Memo. When Victoria Pelletier sets her mind to achieving a goal, she won't let anything or anyone stop her. Nor will she blame anyone but herself when things don't go the way she planned. Those two personality traits — being unstoppable and making no excuses — have been a recipe for success since she became the chief operating...

When you were little, did you ever dress up as royalty—making paper crowns, walking around in old fancy clothes from a dress-upbin, or sitting on imaginary thrones and bossing around the people of your pretend kingdom?.While the imaginary kingdoms of our youth weren't real, as Christians, we can know that we belong to God's very real kingdom. When we trust in Jesus as our Savior, we can know that God is our Father, and He is the King of the universe. And so, because we are the children of the King, we are royalty..As God's royal children, we have the privilege of inviting others into the kingdom of God by sharing the good news: that Jesus, our God and King, became human, lived among us, died on the cross and rose from the grave to beat sin and death... and is returning one day to make all things new. In His kingdom, love and righteousness rule instead of sin. We have the honor of sharing this true story— through our words and our actions—with everyone around us..In God's kingdom, everything is better than we could imagine. Instead of paper crowns that wear out and get ripped, we have God's promise of eternal life with Him (1 Peter 5:4)..Instead of fancy old clothes from a dress-up bin, we are clothed in Jesus's goodness instead of our sinfulness (Isaiah 61:10; Galatians 3:27)..Instead of imaginary thrones and bossy leadership, we are called to love others the way Jesus, our just King, loves us (John 13:34; 1 John 4:19)..That is a kingdom worth being excited about! Now, as royal children of the King, let us share the good news of our Father's kingdom. • A. W. Smith.• If you trust in Jesus as your Savior, you are God's child and you're part of His kingdom. How could remembering that our heavenly Father is the Ruler of the universe give us hope when we experience bossy or unjust leadership here on earth?.• As a child of the King, how could you show others who Jesus is by the way you treat them?.• To learn more about what it means to be God's child, check out our "Know Jesus" page..“He [Jesus] is Lord of lords and King of kings.” Revelation 17:14 (NIV)

King Ruler has seen his share of tough times in life being a native of South Central Los Angeles. In 2019, his world was shaken to its core. He lost his house, his business tanked, and his wife left him. After hearing himself explain his life in a few therapy sessions shortly thereafter, he began to realize how traumatic his experiences were versus how normalized it was in the hood environment he came from. He then began the internal quest to discover what had driven his choices throughout his life. The good and the bad choices. Including the choices of career, spouse, parenting, social circles of influence, dietary preferences, and many other areas of his life. You see, nowhere else will you find the level of normalization and acceptance of parenting without spiritual commitment, deadly diets, the normalization of violence, music that degrades and poisons the mind of its consumers, gang culture, high levels of avoidable deadly illness rates, or drug sales and usage. Even if you make it out the hood, the hood follows you like a stalker. Your hood traumas are exposed based upon how you show up in the world to friends, family, co-workers, spouse, employers, classmates, and every other area of your life. How could it not when the hood is where your mindset was developed. He would later identify the roots of his prior mindset as Post Traumatic Hood Disorder. He now teaches, preaches, and speaks on PTHD throughout the country in an effort to change mindsets and improve the reality of hoodies everywhere one mind at a time.On King Ruler's journey to healing his PTHD, he crossed paths with the teachings of ORI through his studies of traditional African spirituality. That's when the light bulb detonated, eclipsing his past while exposing him to an elevated understanding. Ultimately he decided to renege on his prior understanding, rewrite new narratives, and change his mind. This manifestation became the springboard for evolution in his life, and many members he has touched through his PTHD campaign and through the courses he erected in 2020 called Power of Ori University.www.powerofori.com

http://bible.com/events/49064689 Church of the Nazarene - Harrisonburg Stories of Your Life Part 3: Mary Mary- With Jesus at the beginning, with him until the end. Welcome back to our Sunday morning teaching series “Stories of Your Life” As a church family we are seeking to understand the meaning and the impact of Passion week through the perspectives and stories of key people involved. They are not stories of “our lives” of course, but stories that undergird the new life available to us in Christ. They are the stories that challenge us, encourage us, and point us to the Life. Augustine Him whom the heavens cannot contain, the womb of one woman bore. She ruled our Ruler; she carried Him in whom we are; she gave milk to our Bread. Warren Wiersbe “The first time we meet Mary in the gospel of John, she is attending a wedding (John 2:1-11); now she is preparing for a burial. The hour has come!” ‭‭John‬ ‭19‬:‭23‬-‭25 ‬‬When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. “Let's not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let's decide by lot who will get it.” This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said, “They divided my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.” So this is what the soldiers did. Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. If you pay attention, Mary's life will teach you FAITH ‭‭Luke‬ ‭1‬:‭26‬-‭38 ‬‬In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob's descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.” “I am the Lord's servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her. MARY'S STORY DEMONSTRATES F.A.I.T.H.‭‭ John‬ ‭2‬:‭1‬-‭5 ‬‬On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” ‭‭Acts‬ ‭1‬:‭12‬-‭14‬‬ Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day's walk from the city. When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. Vickie Kraft She had known the presence of God all through these years. She knew what it was to raise a large family, to economize on a tight budget. She experienced slurs on her reputation. She knew unbelief in her own family as her other sons rejected her firstborn all their lives until after his resurrection. But now that Jesus' earthly life was over, she asked for no special place of honor. She was simply another worshipper of her Lord. Faithfulness Availability Intimacy Trust Humility ST. TERESA OF AVILA God never changes. Patience obtains all things. Whoever has God lacks nothing; God alone suffices.‭‭ Galatians‬ ‭2‬:‭20 ‬‬I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Please be aware the stories, theories, re-enactments and language in this podcast are of an adult nature and can be considered disturbing, frightening and in some cases even offensive.  Listener Discretion is therefore advised.  Welcome heathens welcome to the world of the weird and unexplained.  I'm your host, Nicole Delacroix and together, we will be investigating stories about the things that go bump in the night, frighteningly imagined creatures, supernatural beings and even some unsolved mysteries but I promise all sorts of weirdness.  So, sit back, grab your favorite drink, and prepare to be transported to today's dark Enigma....  And on today's Dark enigma well, we have an interesting listener suggestion, so let's get on with it!  With that said, we will still be playing our drinking game and as you know, the drinking game is only for those of us that are at home and have nowhere else to go tonight.  The choice of libation, as always my darlings, is yours, so choose your poison accordingly… Alright, now for the game part how about every time I say King that will be a single shot and every time I say Babylon, that will be a double shot.  Now that the business end is out of the way we can jump headfirst into today's dark enigma… so grab your best clay tablet and your abacus and we dive into today's offering of That Wild and Crazy Guy – The Last King of Babylon – digging into the reign of Mesopotamia's most eccentric ruler. Nabonidus was the last king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, reigning from 556-539 BC. He took the throne after the assassination of the boy-king Labashi-Marduk, who was murdered in a conspiracy only nine months after his inauguration. It is not known whether Nabonidus played a role in his death, but he was chosen as the new king soon after.  During many years of his kingship, Nabonidus was absent at the Arabian oasis of Tayma. The reasons for his long absence remain a matter of controversy, with theories ranging from illness, to madness, to an interest in religious archaeology. The fall of an empire in antiquity was usually the result of complex, interconnected factors that lay beyond the scope of any one person's control. Nonetheless, traumatized contemporaries and later historians alike have often laid the fault at the feet of a single individual. The enigmatic Neo-Babylonian king Nabonidus seemed destined for just such a fate after the Persian armies of Cyrus the Great marched through Babylon's gates in October 539 B.C.

Amen.Tuesday in Holy WeekO God, by the passion of your blessed Son you made an instrument of shameful death to be for us the means of life: Grant us so to glory in the cross of Christ, that we may gladly suffer shame and loss for the sake of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.Wednesday in Holy WeekLord God, whose blessed Son our Savior gave his body to be whipped and his face to be spit upon: Give us grace to accept joyfully the sufferings of the present time, confident of the glory that shall be revealed; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.Holy SaturdayO God, Creator of heaven and earth: Grant that, as the crucified body of your dear Son was laid in the tomb and rested on this holy Sabbath, so we may await with him the coming of the third day, and rise with him to newness of life; who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.A Collect for GraceO Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, you have brought us safely to the beginning of this day: Defend us by your mighty power, that we may not fall into sin nor run into any danger; and that, guided by your Spirit, we may do what is righteous in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; Through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen. A Prayer of St. John ChrysostomAlmighty God, you have given us grace at this time, with one accord to make our common supplications to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will grant their requests: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting.
