RambaN Vs.Rambam Episode 25-Palatable Taamim: The wonderfully anonymous Sefer HaChinuch

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 18, 2021 61:31

The following is a letter from Rabbi Kivelevitz .Shalom Ubracha- It is quite unnecessary to state here how stressful the last ten months have been. As Klal Yisroel places an immeasurable value on learning and intellectual growth, many of us have weathered this storm by entrenching ourselves deeper into our rich literary heritage, discovering insight and inspiration and using the pause of hustle bustle activity to savor new texts and articulate probing questions. The tools of teleconferencing have generated the bracha of wide attendance in Shiurim and access to the world's finest Torah teachers. Energized by these positives, I am humbly offering to partner with all of you on a venture of discovery. Over twenty-five years ago, I listened with rapt attention as Professor Haym Soloveichick eulogized his father. He said the Rambam,Maimonides, was the Girsa DaYankusa of his father, which the prodigy grew up memorizing like nursery rhymes, with all of Mishna Torah etched in his memory and flowing easily from his lip. However,it was in that other Moshe, Nachmanides, that the elder Soloveichick discovered his intellectual approach and soul. It can be assumed that Rav Soloveichick's flowering as the premier Talmudist of our times was built in great part by contrasting the words of each of these Medieval teachers in areas they had both worked on, or where Ramban levels his often withering criticism of Rambam's position. There are scores of examples throughout Shas, and in particular in the work Nachmanides dedicated to staking his disagreements with his Egyptian counterpart-Hasagos to the Rambam's Sefer HaMitzvos. In his classic towering Perush on Chumash,Ramban forcefully attacks many of Rambam's explanations of mitzvos and interpretations of biblical events. In the coming weeks, we can together discover anew these diamond like gems of codification, inquiry analysis and poetic barbs that issued from these giants.....-armed with the salient texts, and buoyed by an enthusiasm to discover, I relish the prospect of learning with you. Rischa D'Araisa Season 2 Episode 20-Kovetz Hasharos Udimyonos-What if Rav Elchanan Wasserman had not died a martyr's death and had escaped to America

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 17, 2021 42:28

Beginning a new What if series on Jewish topics. With a premise that significant alternate fiction is built on assiduous research and knowledge of the persons and milieu, Rabbi Kivelevitz states that he and Rabbi Bechhofer have to be steeped somewhat in the ideas and personage under discussion. As both of them as teen agers, were exposed to the Torah of Rav Elchanan Wasserman, his hashkofos, and martyr's death ,the speculation as to how America would have been different had he remained here from 1938 onwards seemed a project they could tackle.Bechhofer claims that due to his hardline views as evidenced by his not allowing students to accept visas in 1939 offered by Yeshiva University and H.T.C.,and the harsh rhetoric of the Ikvasa Demeshicha, and his forceful personality he would have constricted the scope of Yeshiva life, and attacked aggressively institutions that would have allowed bochurim to attend college.Kivelevitz describes Rav Elchanan as the prime figure to crystallize the modern concept of Daas Torah,as is apparent in the famous letter of Rav Eliyahu Dessler. As he could claim to be the historical extender of Rav Chaim Brisker in learning, the Chofetz Chaim in Torah Hashkapha and Rav Chaim Ozer in communal leadership, figures such as Rav Aharon Kotler,Rav Moshe Feinstein and Rav Eliezer Silver would have been rendered less consequential by the alternate reality Rav Elchanan. While Bechhofer might be correct that Rav Elchanan seemed to be one that would ban any unnecessary use of English in Yeshivos, Kivelevitz reveals that the great Rosh Yeshiva actually was proficient in a few languages and kept abreast of scientific advancements of the day.The Rabbis discuss which work of Rav Elchanan can be considered his most important, Bechhofer believes that the Maamar Al HaEmunah has been the most influential, while Kivelevitz quoting Rav Moshe Heinemann, lists the Kovetz Haoros as demonstrating brilliance, the Divrei Sofrim showcases a Rosh Yeshiva treading into unusual territory that plumbed the nature of fealty to Rabbinic law. Rabbi Kolakowski presents the story of a Mennonite inmate who was upgrading in adopting the strictures of the Amish lifestyle. He claimed his religion prohibited the use of bathing using a modern showerhead. When Kolakowski encountered him, the inmate who was locked up for possession of marijuana and fleeing the state to avoid arrest, was ready to endure time in tortuous solitaire, rather than standing under the nozzle as he was ordered to by the guards.Rabbi Kivelevitz wonders if the soon to be imprisoned rioters from January 6th will enter Federal Prison with their own religious demands, such as Aaron Mostofsky, and the Nordic tattooed Shaman.Kolakowski explains the significance of the symbols emblazoned on the latter's body. Y.K.'s slightly Amish cultural touchstones are, Robert Aldrich's The Frisco Kid, with the two Jewish co-stars, Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford ,the not so accurate reality TV Series Amish Mafia, and the music video produced by Weird Al Yankovic, Amish Paradise.A.K. counters with the obvious Amish thriller, Peter Weir's, Witness which forces a contemplation on the possibility of living as a pacifist in a world wracked by violence and aggression, and for a real look into Amish life, Kivelevitz highly recommends the PBS American Experience Series, The Amish ,and the docudrama Amish Grace which tells the incredible story of a community's forgiveness and resilience after a horrendous mass shooting at West Nickel Mines. As for riots, in prison and right outside of one, Kivelevitz suggests, three classics, Raoul Walsh's White Heat, which immerses the viewer in the psychotic prison mindset, and Jules Dassan's Brute Force, which underscores the brutality of many of the correctional officers, and the release of pent up frustration on display in inmate violence. Also receiving the older Rabbi's thumbs up is Fritz Lang's unsurpassed exploration of mob terror and revenge, Fury.Kolakowski is the Facility Chaplaincy Program Director at the The State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Waymart, Pennsylvania. The institution is a medium security prison facility housing 1,100 inmates and a 120 bed Forensic Treatment Center, which provides inpatient psychiatric treatment in a secure setting for adult male offenders.Kolakowski is the first Rabbi in the history of the Commonwealth to serve as head chaplain in a state prison.Prior to his present position, he served pulpits and chaplaincy positions in Virginia and Upstate New York. The Rabbi has emerged as a talented speaker in areas of religion, politics, spirituality, popular culture, history, and interfaith affairs. He has created an extremely popular YouTube channel with thousands of followers.Kolakowski unashamedly recounts his personal history. While his mother was raised in a Modern Orthodox home in Queens, his father is a devout Roman Catholic. He had a bris in an Orthodox synagogue but was also baptized in a Catholic church. His maternal grandparents encouraged him to have a bar mitzvah in their Orthodox Shul which spurred the young Kolakowski to adopt a frum lifestyle. At eighteen, he spent a year in a Yeshiva in Yerushalayim, whose environs drew him into Hasidic practice and philosophy .Kolakowski went on to study for and receive semichah at Yeshiva Or Kedoshim Biala in Brooklyn. He recognized the need to obtain a B.A. in psychology from Lander College for Men .Hearing the call to become a communal leader, he matriculated to Touro College for a postgraduate certificate in Advanced Rabbinics and Synagogue Management in conjunction with the National Council of Young Israel and the Young Israel Council of Rabbis.Rabbi Kolakowski's English translation of sefer Seder HaYom by the late Biala Rebbe was published in 2006 in Israel to wide acclaim. He can be reached at josephkolakowski@gmail.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Kivelevitz claims that while glaringly obvious, the President should have been singled out by name.Rebbetzin Bechhofer argues forcefully that Trump's remaining in office is a disgrace and could lead to more dangerous incidents and unethical political shenanigans. She fears that an impeachment process ,however, would cloud the real investigation that needs to happen and jarringly polarize the two parties in a way that strongly impedes further progress. The Bechhofers are asked about the charges made by many that the rioters were treated with undue restraint that would never been afforded a BLM mob.Kivelevitz further asks the couple to comment on the point made by some in the Orthodox community and beyond ,that last summers riots were not condemned by all parties or aggressively dealt with, despite the great property loss and violence that was caused by the protesters. Rabbi Kivelevitz questions Rabbi Kolakowski as to the number of cases where he has heard the imprisoned person claim that he was completely innocent. To Kivelevitz's surprise, Kolokowski responds that only one inmate that he has served, has stated that that the crime he was purported to have committed was a complete fiction.Kolakowski recounts the background and his interactions with a well known Rabbi who was convicted in 2009 of transporting a minor in foreign commerce for the purpose of engaging in criminal sexual activity and for engaging in sexual conduct with a minor. The pair recount a number of famous Jewish heroes ,patriarchs and martyrs who have been falsely accused, imprisoned and subject to suffering.(Avraham Avinu ,Yosef HaTzadik ,Rav Schneur Zalman of Liadi, Colonel Alfred Dreyfus,Leo Frank)Y.K.'s Not quite Innocent/Not really guilty Movie and TV recommendations are Edward G. Ulmer's noir-classic, Detour ,Vincent Price's first star turn, The Invisible Man Returns, and the first season Simpsons episode Krusty Gets Busted .A.K.'s list of wrongly accused and imprisoned films are drawn primarily from the work of Alfred Hitchcock, who uses the inscrutable oppressive hand of fate as a theme throughout his career. A.K. suggests strongly to savor, The 39 Steps, Saboteur, I Confess,The Wrong Man, and especially the films that were the apex of Hitchcock's career, North By Northwest, and The Birds. Another treat that features a man imprisoned wrongly ,is Preston Sturges' hilarious ,moving, masterpiece, Sullivan's Travels, with its strikingly poignant climax that was a milestone for a dignified representation of African-Americans on screen. For listeners who want to hear a ballad on the theme of the authorities rush to judge and convict and unfair treatment of people of color ,A.K. offers Bob Dylan's, The Hurricane.Kolakowski is the Facility Chaplaincy Program Director at the The State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Waymart, Pennsylvania.

Standing in Two Worlds with Doctor Sam Juni -Episode 26-Left in our own devices-Mental Health might depend on restricting use of virtual media

Smart-phone addiction, time wallowing video games, trolling in chatrooms, obsessive twitter checking, these are all part of the new normal.Doctor Juni reminds us that the toll on personality, relationships, and mental health has been significant. Rabbi Kivelevitz responds that electronic devices and platforms have been lifelines to many during the Covid Pandemic. The discussants then begin an examination of key aspects of the connection between immersion in electronic communication devices and problematic mental health. Kivelevitz notes that gadgets have fostered psychological alienation by eliminating direct human conversation and interactions. Juni stresses that the devices also enable many to communicate and form relationships which they were developmentally or psychologically unable to do in a direct mode. Repeating complaints that have been voiced by many social commentators, the co-hosts illustrate how cyber gadgets have usurped thoughtful human pastimes (such as real discussions or reading a book),and by forcing persons to be constantly "on" these electronic appendages have eliminated opportunities for actual self-reflection.The Doctor and the Rabbi underscore how these media have served as equalizers of all "friendships" to a shallow common denominator. A healthy converse of this lamentable situation, where disconnect provides growth of character, is highlighted, Kivelevitz asserts, in the arc of development trod by the Tom Hanks protagonist in Robert Zemeckis' Cast Away .Kivelevitz further points out that Israel has the world's highest per-capita cell phone use, suggesting that this phenomenon is a cause of severe problems in the Jewish world. The addiction to virtual connectivity has spawned particular problems for the traditional way of observing Shabbas. Kivelevitz recounts the ubiquitous texting that goes on among youngsters who consider themselves Modern- Orthodox, with Juni confirming that this has spread into the Haredi and Chasidic worlds. The Doctor states that refraining from using their phones on Shabbas is close to impossible for many youngsters and adults in our communities. Kivelevitz wonders whether some Halachic accommodation may be vital to keep many self-identified religiously observant people in the fold, likening such accommodations to those allowing the Orthodox to walk the streets on Shabbas despite the triggering of surveillance cameras, and encouraging the constructions of Eruvin in major metropolitan areas which enable families to leave their homes, despite the severity of laws violated which an unprejudiced reading of the sources would yield. Both agree that “there is no going back from here", just as sociologists assure us that distanced relationships will stay the norm even after the Covid pandemic eases. The forty-five minute episode deals with three interrelated subjects. The Rabbis begin the program debating whether it is correct to equate the wild charges of voter fraud and claim of a stolen election by the President's staunch supporters with the four years of declaring Trump's victory illegitimate by the Democrats and the media. Bechhofer rejects the inexact comparison which if repeated enough, obfuscate the terrible management of the country under Trump's helm.Kivelevitz pressures Bechhofer to admit to achievements wrought by the administration in relations with the State of Israel and the advancements of peace in the region. He also gets his co-hosts agreement that the three Supreme Court justices nominated by Trump will act as a barrier from the encroachments on religious liberty that the zeitgeist is demanding. The episode then segues into a critique of the published response of Rav Avigdor Miller Zt"l as to why God is referred to in exclusively masculine terms. The late Rabbi's words reiterate tropes about women's roles in society that are distressing for the modern ear.Bechhofer offers a more palatable theological answer that aligns with a mystic ,yet non-misogynistic point of reference, while Kivelevitz makes the 21st century(2021) case specifically for women heads of state and female police officers. The program concludes with a response to a listener of last week's entry, where it was implied that the Torah landscape would have been considerably altered had Rav Nota Greenblatt become the son-in-law of Rav Moshe Feinstein Zt"l. Kivelevitz describes an intriguing counter-scenario to what was by inserting the x-factor of the Gadol from Memphis. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Rabbi Kivelevitz begins the episode by noting that the mentality of many drivers is inconsistent with their normal behavior, citing in particular that road rage is often triggered in people who are not usually aggressive and that drivers – and particularly Israeli drivers --often engage in overly risky behaviors. Professor Juni responds by delineating the psychological profile of such a driver as an anonymous individual who becomes transformed into a dehumanized extension of the vehicle, as s/he regressed to a competitive primitive survivalist existence.Commenting on the outrageous driving behavior of some Israelis, Juni explains this as deriving from the “living on the edge” stance which is so much part of the army experience, and – to some extent – the sense of emergency felt by Israelis in general due to perceived constant existential threat. He further remarks, that when distanced from oneself in an anonymous depersonalized role, the Israeli driver is predisposed to a state of keen competitiveness where the aim of “winning” becomes paramount, resulting in total abandonment of social mores, human values of decency, and the rational assessment of danger.
