We were proud to welcome Christian Wurzinger, the Group CFO at Klosterfrau Group in Switzerland, to the EMEA Recruitment podcast. “In order to be successful, you must realise that the human is at the centre of everything.” Christian spoke to Paul Toms, our Founder, about the positives he's taken from the past year-and-a-half during the COVID-19 pandemic. One of his key learnings is how effective remote working can be within large organisations. He's also found it an important time to focus on the value of relationships. Christian feels that if companies can take those two positives out of the crisis, the experience will have lasting effects. Working in Finance, Christian came from the “hard” side of the business, focussed on numbers and fact-driven approaches, whereas those in Human Resources, for example, always start with the people. As he's matured, Christian has found that injecting a human touch and recognising the importance of people is essential in driving results. After working at Procter & Gamble for over 20 years and now leading the Finance function of a Swiss multi-national, you would assume that Christian feels he's made it in his career. However, he explains that his key motivation is to keep learning and improving. Further into his career, he's started to see longer-term trends and is proud to work for a company that's building lasting value. For those looking to improve their productivity, Christian has a top tip – if you're a fan of the to-do list, avoid his answer! With such a fierce job market in Switzerland at the moment, Paul and Christian explore the true cost of a wrong hire on a company, as well as the ways that candidates can stand out in the interview process. Although he's not keen on the video approach, Christian does feel that the digitised recruitment process should be married with a human touch. Finally, we discuss the impact of Business Intelligence (BI) and Data on the Finance function. Although Christian believes that technology can dramatically improve productivity in certain areas, such as Accounting, focussing on organising your people in highly effective teams is a bigger focus for companies. In this episode of the EMEA Recruitment podcast, we were delighted to welcome Christian Nilsson, the CFO for the ABB Electrification business. “The more diverse the crowd you spend your life with, the wider your learning ought to be.” Christian joined Paul Toms, our Founder, via a video call, which has become the norm for communicating across the business world due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Paul kicked off the conversation by asking whether Christian has taken any positive learnings from the past year. Although it has been an incredibly difficult year in many ways, Christian has found that the new ways of working can have a positive impact both professionally and personally. Having worked across a range of countries within the business transformation field, Christian explains the three components that have been key to his success. Trust and empowerment within his teams are top of the list. It’s unsurprising that Christian also values diversity of mindset, which taught him a lot when based in the USA, China and European countries. Although he spent a “tonne of time” travelling around the world pre-COVID, life has changed a lot since then. One thing that hasn’t changed for Christian is the way that he prioritises his day. After hearing about Christian’s focus on his team, it’s no surprise that people are top of his list in a typical working day. Finding good people for his team is one of Christian’s greatest challenges, but he believes that it’s also the most powerful result when you get it right. He tells Paul which traits are most difficult to find when recruiting. Looking at how the Finance function may change in the future, Christian explains how we must find and use data to improve decision-making. But will people within Finance teams be treated more like machines than humans if decisions are based on data? Christian is confident that we may actually have more time to focus on people and personalities if Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning can harvest the data we need. Although Christian didn’t wake up one day and know that he wanted to spend his life in Finance, he feels lucky to have worked for companies that place Finance close to the business and decision-making. If you’re looking to become a Chief Financial Officer in the future, he ends with some advice on grasping opportunities and experiences to expand your scope. Paul Lodato is the general manager of the Fort Myers/Naples Florida affiliate station of the Christian Television Network. Although Christian television has often been criticized for focusing too much on raising money, today, we talk about how God can use Christian television to bring people to Jesus.
In a recent episode, I mentioned that I'd be doing a few more interviews with less-experienced traders, who begun with $20,000 or more, have completed 12-months of full-time trading and are making a real effort to get better. Here's another one in the series... My guest is Christian Castillo, he resides in California and trades the foreign exchange market using methods of technical analysis. Although Christian is relatively fresh as a trader, he put up—what I would consider to be—a solid first year. He made money 9 of 12-months, and finished 2019 with a profit just shy of $20,000. We speak about Christian funding his account from driving Lyft, his experience going full-time (favorable and adverse moments), the premise of his trading strategy, the forex market in general, among other things too.
You remember our recent MY LIFE Podcast guest, Emily Garrett? How could you not? She's amazing, inspirational, lovable, and pretty much one of the toughest and most honest women we know. She stole our hearts, and is the WHY for MY LIFE Matters. Her husband, Christian Garrett, shares with us his perspective as a Caregiver as we honor National Family Caregiver's Month. Although Christian doesn't quite identify with the traditional definition of that role. Or at least, he redefines it for himself and his family. And, that works, too.
Does Jesus need celebrities to help spread the Gospel? Do pro-life advocates need former abortionists and “rock star” speakers and personalities to advance the pro-life message? Or, is the consistent and faithful proclamation of truth enough to change hearts and minds? By now, of course, we all have seen the news of singer and producer Kanye West coming to faith in Jesus. Like most of us, I am thrilled for Kanye and his family. I join millions of Christians in looking forward to seeing how God might use Kanye’s huge platform to advance God’s kingdom. On today’s show, Mark uses scripture to discuss the need to proceed with caution when elevating new converts to Christian leadership position. In Mt. 13 Jesus shares a story about the seed and the soil in which he warns against false conversions. Christian history is replete with examples of men who have fallen away after being given to much notoriety too soon. We should not be so desperate for a Christian witness that we compromise what the bible says about the requirements of leadership. For example, in the past, pro-life leaders have made mistakes in elevating new converts to positions of leadership. Although Christian celebrities are not necessarily Christian leaders in the true biblical sense, we need to heed the admonition that our leaders should “not be a new convert.” I Tim. 2-6 We need to avoid the extremes of immediately putting men like Kanye on a pedestal and discounting the powerful work of God in bringing men to Christ. Today’s guest is coach, writer and speaker Christian Thibaudeau. If you are familiar with T-Nation, and don’t live under a rock in general, you are likely aware of Christian and his work on strength and human performance. Although Christian is often looked at as a bodybuilding type coach, he is very much a strength, power and athletic performance coach, and a great one at that. If you haven’t read his book, “Theory and Application of Modern Strength and Power Methods”, you are really missing out on some great work in the realm of explosive athletic preparation. In the last few years, one of the biggest areas of intrigue for me, and possibly the biggest “game changer” I’ve been utilizing in coaching is that of neuro-typing athletes. I started with the Braverman test several years ago, read the “Edge Effect”, and then recently I’ve been listening to some of the new work that Christian has come out with on the level of neuro-typing focusing on three general athlete classifications, five in total, that really make great sense when considering what has worked, or hasn’t worked, for me or athletes I coach. I’ve been devouring everything Christian has written on the topic, and it has made true changes in my coaching for the better. The five types coach Thibaudeau will discuss are type 1A and B (neural/dopamine types), type 2A and B (muscular/adrenaline types) and type 3 (serotonin type). This podcast goes in depth into individualizing training programs based on these types, and how to get the best results you possibly can for each individual. In addition to this podcast, you can learn more about Christian's training ideology and neuro-typing concepts on his site thibarmy.com. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points Christian Thibaudeau’s background as an athlete and how it has impacted his role in neuro-typing The neuro-typing system, and Christian’s evolution of that system to his athletes Neuro-types as described in coaching mannerism and types Why some explosive athletes need to be stronger in the weightroom than others (and vice versa) Different responses to various speed training setups, based on athletic type How the different neuro-types respond to training frequency, and why Neural charge circuits and how they assist athletes in restoring neurochemistry Complex training and potentiation between the neuro-types Neuro-types and single set training protocols Christian Thibaudeau Quotes “Anxiety creates tightness, especially in the flexor muscles” “The main difference in the type 1A and 1B is the strategy the use to overcome a resistance… the reason for that difference is the acetylcholine level” “The 1A’s strategy is to produce maximum tension, the 1B’s strategy is to use maximum impulse, maximum starting strength to create momentum to overcome the sticking point” “If you are sensitive to a neurotransmitter or hormone, your body does not need to maintain a high level of that neurotransmitter or hormone at rest” “Athletes instinctively do what works for them, and they push it to the extreme” “When I was training as an Olympic weightlifter; the coach was a national level coach and used to working with top level athletes, and we always started the workouts with 15 minutes of jumping” “Those who are naturally built to be explosive need less strength work” “Type 1A’s and 1B’s are best built for frequency” “If you are doing anything explosive, anything heavy, anything skill related, anything competitive, you are triggering a dopamine response” “(Regarding complex training) Higher acetylcholine levels allows one to switch their focus from one to the other” “2B’s need more assistance work to get stronger” “For type 1a, heavy lifting before practice will enhance performance,
Barbell Business - Podcast for gym owners by Barbell Shrugged
If you are like most gym owners, you started a box because you are passionate about fitness. You wanted to turn your passion into a career, and you started a gym on the side in conjunction with your day job. Now if you are like most gym owners, you also noticed that running a gym and trying to work your day job was a lot harder than you expected. You hit a plateau with how your business was scaling, and you realized that there are just not enough hours in the day to have a day job, and still have your gym grow into what you want it to be. If this was you, or is still you, you need to listen to this episode. This week, we met with Christian Valencia at his office in Orange County, CA. Christian is the CEO of a company called HIIT Bottle. Although Christian is not a gym owner, his story is very similar to yours. Christian came up with the idea for HIIT in 2014 after exploding a generic shaker bottle of whey all over himself. He realized there needed to be something better, and he got to work in creating a higher quality all purpose shaker bottle. What resulted was HIIT Bottle. Since then Christian has been on a journey of shifting HIIT Bottle from a side project to a fully operational business. In his story are lots of insights and tips on how he transitioned into running HIIT Bottle full time. Enjoy the show, Mike
