Her research in ancien régime French-language literature and culture has explored subjects such as garden design, art and architecture; theater, ballet, and fête performances; astronomy; early modern fashion accessories; and early journalism. Claire's current projects include Jesuit school ballets; female itinerant clothing resellers; and the innovative and enterprising publishing practices of Nicholas de Blégny, a best-selling and long forgotten multi-hyphenate physician-author. Religions du Monde reçoit Victoria Kamondji, Sierra-Léonaise, naturalisée française, femme pasteure évangélique, présidente de la Communauté des Églises d'expression africaines et professeure d'anglais à l'Université de Bourgogne, un parcours riche et passionnant. Née en Sierra Leone d'un père anglican et d'une mère catholique (qu'elle a perdue à l'âge de 5 ans), Victoria Kamondji – née Johnston - a baigné dans l'œcuménisme (unité des chrétiens) et a fini par choisir l'église méthodiste (protestante) pour sa confirmation. Elle a grandi dans l'est de la Sierra Leone près de la Guinée, dans une zone diamantifère où travaillait son père, cadre dans une entreprise minière, et vivait dans une zone ultrasécurisée entourée d'expatriés anglais, éloignée de la culture africaine. Après le lycée, Victoria Kamondji se lance dans des études de littérature africaine francophone à Freetown, la capitale, une façon pour elle de partir à la découverte de sa propre identité en tant qu'Africaine. Puis à la faveur d'une bourse d'études proposée par la France, elle s'installe à Lille en 1987 dans le nord du pays pour faire sa thèse en littérature. La terrible guerre qui éclate en Sierra Leone entre 1991 jusqu'en 2002 qui a fait entre 50 000 et 200 000 morts et des milliers de blessés, d'amputés, notamment dans la zone diamantifère qui attire toutes les convoitises, où elle a grandi, l'empêche de retourner dans son pays et éparpille sa famille. C'est en France où elle s'établit dorénavant qu'elle est séduite par l'église évangélique, et qu'elle entreprend des études de théologie à la Faculté évangélique de Vaux-sur-Seine. Elle devient pasteure, comme son mari, Emmanuel Kamondji, originaire de la République Démocratique du Congo, dans l'église Assemblée évangélique nouvelle alliance à Villeneuve d'Ascq (près de Lille). Son travail est remarqué par la Fédération Protestante de France qui la nomme vice-présidente de 2007 à 2013, devenant ainsi la première femme africaine évangélique à ce poste. Une de ses missions a consisté à s'impliquer au sein de la commission des églises auprès des migrants en Europe dont elle sera la présidente pendant deux mandats. Depuis 2022, Victoria Kamondji est présidente de la CEAF - Communauté des églises d'expression africaine et francophone - , un réseau d'églises chrétiennes qui essaime en Europe et, en particulier, en France à la faveur des migrations et des diasporas. Nous sommes le 17 août 1661, au château de Vaux-le-Vicomte, à 50 km au sud-est de Paris. C'est dans cette magnifique demeure, qu'il a fait construire et pour laquelle il a fait appel aux meilleurs artistes de son temps, que le surintendant des finances Nicolas Fouquet s'apprête à recevoir Louis XIV. Pour éblouir celui que l'on nommera roi Soleil, qui en a vu d'autres en matière de fastes, Fouquet, lui-même l'un des personnages parmi les plus fortunés et les plus puissants de son époque, a mis toutes les chances de son côté en s'offrant les services du plus réputé des maîtres d'hôtel : François Vatel. Le défi est immense, l'échec ne peut être envisager. Vatel, l'un des plus grands ordonnateurs de fêtes, est au sommet de son art, se lâche et invente la crème fouettée. Dix ans plus tard, le 24 avril 1671, au château de Chantilly, François Vatel, encore lui, prépare la même crème fouettée à l'occasion d'une fête organisée en l'honneur, il y en a qui ont vraiment de la chance, de, je vous le donne en mille : Louis XIV. Mais la maître d'hôtel est au service du prince de Condé, pair de France et cousin du roi. Et comme la fameuse crème ne porte pas encore de nom, on décide de l'appeler, tout simplement, une « chantilly ». Que peut-on penser de ce récit ? C'est un beau roman, c'est une belle histoire. Malheureusement, aucune source ne confirme le rôle de Vatel dans la création de la crème fouettée. Alors, d'où vient-elle cette douce chantilly ? Every September since the '90s, Portlanders could look forward to Vaux's Swift season, when tens of thousands of tiny birds came to roost in Chapman Elementary's chimneys together and thousands of people gathered to watch them. But last year, the flock started avoiding the spot, and they haven't returned, instead dispersing to other sites.  Today on City Cast Portland, we're talking with Joe Liebezeit, the statewide conservation director for Bird Alliance of Oregon, about what's going on with the swifts and if they'll ever return to Chapman Elementary. Vaux’s swifts are small, migratory birds that travel from their breeding grounds in the Pacific Northwest to Central and South American each fall, roosting in chimneys and hollowed-out trees along the way. For a few weeks in September, huge flocks of the birds have spiraled into the chimney of Chapman Elementary in Northwest Portland. The nightly display has entertained crowds for decades, but as of last year, the birds appear to have abandoned the chimney.    Joe Liebezeit is the statewide conservation director for the Bird Alliance of Oregon. He joins us to talk about why the birds might be moving and what to expect from the swifts this year.

It's time for a day trip to Vaux-le-Vicomte! This week, I'll show you how to visit the magnificent chateau Vaux-le-Vicomte with Bertrand d'Aleman from award-winning travel company My Private Paris. We took a private van from Paris, then spent half a day exploring the chateau and its grounds. At 5:24 am on Sunday, May 22, 2016, a 9-9-9 operator responded to a call from someone reporting a person who wasn't breathing. The caller told the 9-9-9 operator that her daughter's partner had collapsed. When emergency medical personnel reached the home, they found Lyndsey Vaux unresponsive and not breathing. Lyndsey Vaux died not long after the 9-9-9 call. Investigators could have never been prepared for the information they would learn about the events leading up to Lyndsey's death. Lyndsey's story involves domestic violence and coercive control in their most extreme forms. Listener discretion is strongly advised.
